Essays on temporary work

Three essays on temporary work are presented. The first two essays examine several factors that contribute to the dramatic increase in temporary employment. The first essay develops a theoretical model to illustrate how employers experiencing fluctuations in product demand use temporary workers to maintain flexibility in their labor input and reduce cost. The essay then presents empirical evidence of the significant role temporary workers play in accommodating for demand variations. The results suggest that increases in uncertainty in product demand is partly responsible for the growth in temporary employment. Apart from hiring temporary workers as a buffer against demand shocks, some firms use temps as a way to recruit and screen prospective (permanent) employees. The second essay examines this issue by focusing on several characteristics of a position and analyzes their effect on the type of employment contract that is offered to a worker. The analysis reveals that increases in the cost of dismissal help explain the rise in temporary employment. In the third essay, the link between wages, gender and temporary work is considered. A simple model that is constructed provides an explanation for the observed differences in wages between women and men. Women, if expected to have a weaker attachment to the labor force, will be less accessible to and earn lower wages than men in high-training jobs. A key feature of temporary work, that temporary workers receive little training compared to their permanent counterparts, provides a unique way to testing for this hypothesis.

Some people tend to take temporary jobs( they only work for few month of year) for they have time to do other things. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Taking temporary occupations has been tended by certain individuals for the past few years and after working hours they devote extra time to other things. This essay will highlight that adverse consequences of this approach surpass the benefits brought by it. Two glaring advantages of taking temporary jobs are enumerated following. Firstly, since in the fast paced competitive era, people are willing to receive tons of experience in different fields of work due to unemployment. By doing such jobs, they can enhance their knowledge from a variety of work. Unquestionably, there have formulated ample industries in certain parts of the world, for instance, multi- national companies where employees are capable of recruiting jobs for a short period. Another benefit is that if a worker works temporary jobs, he will get an opportunity to spend a great deal of time with his family. To cite an example, in the present scenario, owing to a hectic schedule, people have forgotten to draw a line between family and a job. So, definitely, in this respect, they can entertain with their parents during their leisure time instead of job. Despite the above mentioned benefits, the detrimental aspects are quite severe. Indeed, people cannot get job satisfaction unless they glued with merely one job till lifetime. What is more, when people transform their workplace frequently, their interest is already lost. Secondly, by taking temporary jobs, people are not only deficient from pay hikes but also they live in dilemma. The reason is that unsecurity of jobs that can fired at any time. To compandium, although being a temporary recruiter is worthwhile in order to build profound knowledge regarding various work and spend amount of time with family, its downsides somewhere as a bane for temporary professions.

It is a fact that many people, especially the young keen on working several months in a year and doing what they prefer in months left. Personally, I totally disagree with this statement , which will explained in next paragraphs.

On the one hand, a number of reasons can explained why people should not having a temporary jobs. One of the most vital is that it is difficult to find another job after months of resting time. This can be explained by that months without working can make people forget how to do tasks of their previous jobs which spend a long time to catch up with their working speed in the past. This can cause a low quality of job which was in their field.

On the other hand, several months without jobs will cost a huge amount of money. And this lead to they have to work very hard in the few months, such as doing 2 or 3 jobs at the same time which harm their health seriously. For example, a tiktoker named Thao Huong shared that she had to work up to 18 hours and only slept 3 hours per day in 5 months to prepare enough money for her trip around the world in the rest of the years and it made her health terrible and could not enjoy her trip perfectly.

In conclusion, I think it is not a best choice of choosing a temporary which only spend a few months of the years and relaxing all of the other months.

Job Overview:

  • Incumbent serves as the office manager and administrative assistant, performing various administrative work and other duties as required by the supervisor.
  • Incumbent (s) reports to the HRO for assignment to various offices within U.S. Embassy Pretoria or Consulates on an as-needed basis.
  • The incumbent ensures effective office operations by providing administrative and logistical support for general office functions for the section.
  • This includes planning for high-level meetings and events, preparing documents and correspondence, managing individual and central calendars, planning travel logistics, and maintaining office records.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Logistical Support - 60%

  • Support the section with all aspects of program coordination, promotion, and communication, internal and external.
  • Reserve internal meetings rooms and offsite venues, and assist in the preparation, planning, and execution of internal and external meetings, workshops, and conferences; this includes communicating meeting logistics to internal USG staff in all relevant agencies and all external participants.
  • Liaise with participants, venue proprietors, professional event coordinators, and other service providers in connection with planning program-related meetings and events.
  • Coordinate and assist with assembling welcome and briefing packages for senior management, incoming staff, and temporary duty and high-level visitors.
  • Arrange and communicate registration, travel, transportation, and lodging for visitors, incoming staff, and current staff authorized for official travel.
  • Process manual and electronic travel requests, authorizations, cash advances, and expense vouchers.
  • Provide assistance with editing and data collection in the preparation of program reports, promotional material, contact lists, etc.
  • When requested, participate in meetings.
  • Assist in preparing/reviewing purchase orders for program activities and equipment.
  • Assist all section staff with access to USG systems and equipment, including OpenNet computers, laptops, cellphone, modems, iron keys, scanners and printers.
  • Assist with any other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Records Management - 20% of Time

  • Maintain electronic and manual filing systems.
  • Ensure ready access and availability to reports and other published materials required by the office and interagency team.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and up-to-date records of office equipment inventory.
  • Monitor office attendance, process all timekeeping documents, capture in electronic timekeeping system application, and maintain orderly and complete records.
  • Ensure all files are properly stored and scheduled to be destroyed according to policy requirements.

Office Communication - 20% of Time

  • Set up and participate in video conferences, which includes ensuring calendar invites are sent out timeously and accurately to all relevant participants.
  • Take and circulate meeting minutes for office meetings.
  • Receive incoming telephone calls, responding to enquiries or routing them to appropriate persons/sections.
  • Maintain office calendar and reply to internal and external requests for appointments/meetings.
  • Draft, edit, and format official memos, letters, emails, calendar invites, and other office correspondence and communiques.

Qualifications and Evaluations

All selected candidates must be able to obtain and hold a: 

  • Public Trust Security Clearance. 
  • All selected candidates will be subject to a background investigation and may be subject to a pre-employment medical exam. 
  • Selected candidate must be able to begin working within a reasonable period of time (12 weeks) upon receipt of agency authorization and/or clearances/certifications or their candidacy may end.
  • University Degree.
