Sr. Regi Joseph

To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children; to earn the approbation of honest critics; to appreciate beauty; to give of one’s self, to leave the world better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived-that is to have succeeded - Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Presentation Convent Hr. Sec. School, Srinagar has a history of 84 glorious years in the field of education. We look back with a sense of gratitude and satisfaction at the enormous contribution this institution has made in the lives of all those who have passed through the portals of their Alma Mater. We now invite you to take a journey down the memory lane as we retrace our steps, to the journey which began in Ireland.

Maharaja Harisingh, the last ruler of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir required a distinguished school for the children of his subjects. So he requested the Head of the Church in Kashmir to request the Presentation Sisters of Rawalpindi to open a school in Srinagar. For this purpose the Maharaja allotted 10 acres of land on the banks of the pristine river Jhelum on lease. The founding members of Presentation Convent School, Srinagar were Mother Peter Conway, Mother Sacred Heart, Mother Annunciata and Mother Xavier. After receiving the invitation, the Sisters travelled from Rawalpindi via Uri and reached Kashmir after the journey of three days. On reaching Kashmir, the sisters rented a house on the banks of the Dal Lake at Boulevard and started their school on 17th March 1936. Most of the students were foreigners then mainly the children of British families living in Srinagar.

A few students from distinguished families were also admitted. The school had boarding facility in the initial years, which was discontinued later. While they stayed in the rented house in Boulevard and conducted classes there for the students, the actual building was being constructed at Rajbagh. The official functioning of school in Rajbagh began on 15th June, 1939. The cost of starting the first school and constructing the second school and the convent was borne by the government. The school was co-ed until 1977. We were granted recognition for B.A degrees for women but the college department was closed down in 1947 after the partition of India. The Govt. College for women was opened thereafter in a former palace building on the hotel road.

Novodevichy Convent: Moscow’s best-known monastery (PHOTOS)

presentation convent higher secondary school photos

At the end of the 19th century, Novodevichy Convent stood lonely in the middle of a field in the western outskirts of Moscow…

Now, dense urban districts have emerged around it; roads and overpasses were built. The place itself is now considered practically the center of the city and an elite district.

The full name of the cloister is the ‘Moscow Bogoroditse-Smolensky Novodevichy Stavropegial Convent’. It was founded in May 1524 by Grand Prince Vasili III (the father of Ivan the Terrible). The occasion for this was the reconquering of the city of Smolensk by Russia in the course of the Lithuanian-Muscovite War of 1512-1522 – the city that, for more than a century, was in the possession of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The monastery was consecrated in honor of the main relic of Smolensk – the icon Our Lady of Smolensk ‘Hodegetria’.

The new cloister was built on a bend in the Moscow River; historically, this area was called the ‘Maiden’s Field’ (According to legend, young women were gathered here who were then sent along with tribute to the Mongol-Tatars). ‘Novodevichy’ means ‘new women’s’ monastery; that’s because there already was another monastery, the Conception Convent, in the region of the Maiden’s Field.

The main and the oldest cathedral of the monastery is dedicated to the ‘Our Lady of Smolensk’ icon. The architect of the cathedral is not exactly known, but since the cathedral is reminiscent of the Dormition Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, it’s often attributed to Italian architects who worked on the Kremlin ensemble (in particular to Aloisio the New).

Frescoes of the 16th century have survived in the monastery and, today, restorers are working on them.

During a raid of the Crimean Khan in the 15th century, the monastery was hit by a large fire; the decision was then made to reinforce the monastery that stood on the western border of Moscow; and it was encircled by a strong wall with merlons and arrow slits, which was unusual for a nunnery.

The fortress wall of the monastery resembles the shape of an irregular triangle (one of its corners is beveled, mirroring the outline of the Novodevichy pond). The perimeter of the wall features 12 fortress towers.

Under Ivan the Terrible, the monastery would unofficially bear the name of the “court” monastery – the widows of the Grand Prince family would be “exiled” there (for example, the widow of his son Ivan, whom Ivan the Terrible allegedly killed , at least according to Ilya Repin).

Later, even Tsaritsa Irina Godunova, the widow of Feodor Ioannovich, lived there. The chambers of Irina Godunova are considered one of the oldest buildings of the monastery.

It was in this monastery Irina’s brother, Boris Godunov, accepted his ascension as the tsar; he favored the monastery, where his sister was a nun, quite a lot, allocating a lot of funds for it from the treasury. Later, a lot of high-ranking nuns from noble boyar and prince families lived in the monastery, as well, and it was maintained on treasury money. In the 17th century, Tatiana, the sister of Peter the Great, lived there as a nun, as well as his first spouse, Eudoxia Lopukhina.

During the ‘Time of Troubles’ and the Polish intervention, the monastery was in the heat of battles and was practically ravaged and ransacked. Many other churches and chambers were built later – at the end of the 17th century, under the Romanovs. For example, the Baroque-style Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior over the northern gate, which is the first to greet anyone visiting the monastery.

At the end of the 17th century, the Church of the Assumption and a refectory for it were built.

In 1690, a Baroque-style bell tower was erected. Later, the monastery gained several more administrative buildings and chambers.

Tsarevna Sophia , the older sister of Peter the Great and his regent, spent her last days in the monastery. She, as many other high-ranked nuns, was buried in the Smolensky Cathedral. In total, more than 50 nuns of tsar, prince, and boyar blood are buried in the podklet (non-residential ground floor) of the cathedral.

Gradually, not only nuns, but also simply noble Moscow denizens were buried within the monastery walls; a whole necropolis formed on the territory of the cloister (by the beginning of the 20th century, it had almost 3,000 graves).

The neo-Gothic style chapel-tomb of the manufacturers, the Prokhorovs, was built in the 1910s – it’s one of the last new buildings of the monastery.

As such, in 1898, a Novodevichy cemetery was established outside the monastery walls, which became the burial site for many of the Soviet elite (to this day, it remains one of the most “prestigious” cemeteries, where only very famous and important people are buried).

Today, the Novodevichy Convent and the park near the Novodevichy pond is one of the Moscow denizens’ favorite places for walks.

PRESENTATION CONVENT HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL

PRESENTATION CONVENT HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL

SCHOOL IN GOA

Presentation Convent Higher Secondary School is a Catholic Minority Institution founded in 2015 for the spread of education. The Medium of instruction is English. This Institution is run by the Education Society of the Franciscan Hospitaller Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, to impart all-round academic, physical, moral, and spiritual education to the students. The Institution holds in high esteem the motto of its founders Blessed Mother Maria Clara and Fr. Raimundo dos Ajos Beirao as “Where there is good to be done, do it”. Students of all denominations are admitted to the school, with due respect to their freedom of conscience but they are expected to conform to the moral standards of the Institution.

Introduction

The Congregation of the Franciscan Hospitaller Sisters of the Immaculate Conception was established in Goa in 1886 and spread from there to the various parts of the country having its headquarters at present at Clara Sadan, Bangalore.

A Franciscan Hospitaller Sisters of the Immaculate Conception is a person, consecrated and dedicated to following Jesus Christ and serves her brethren especially the more needy. She commits herself to witness hospitality the specific charism of the congregation which is reflected in the multiple forms of service.

As Franciscans, we follow the spirit of St.Francis of Assisi whose ideal was to live according to the gospel. These few simple words are his Rule “When the Lord gave me brethren, no one taught me what I should do but the Lord himself revealed to me that we should live according to the Holy Gospel.”(Testament of St. Francis 16 & 17). Being born and formed by the gospel the Franciscan Vocation is open to all categories of persons and to all forms of apostolic activity. The greatest motivation of St. Francis to each of us is “Hold back nothing of yourselves for yourself so that he who gives himself totally to you may receive you totally”.

The Coat of Arms of our Congregation serves as the “Arms of faith” and the seal of our Congregation has the form of a diamond-shaped shield belonging to Ladies.

In the upper part of the shield are depicted the five bleeding wounds of Christ.

To the left, in the white portion the legendary star, with one of its points directed upwards and coinciding with the vertical plane, symbolizes Mary, as does the crown above the star.

To the right, the burning lamp signifies the oil that soothes pain and wounds and simultaneously feeds the flame that gives light and warmth.

Below is the cross of Christ at the base of the shield and outside it, is an interpretation of its meaning is the motto “LVCERE ET FOVERE.”

LVCERE meaning to illuminate, enlighten, teach the doctrine by the example of one’s life.

FOVERE its meaning is to warm, to bear with, to stimulate, to encourage, to fondle, soothe call for. For the Franciscan Sister, two ideas united in one are represented by the burning lamp, for Christ said “Keep your loins girded and your lamps burning.”

Character of the School

Presentation Convent Higher Secondary School is a School recognized by the Government of Goa, run by the Catholic Minority. The school is open primarily for Catholic students, however, non-catholic students are also admitted while keeping the Christian character of the institution. We consider it is our duty to respect the religious beliefs of the other students.

We conduct classes for Std. XI to XII. At the end of Std. XII students appear for the Higher Secondary School Certificate Examination conducted by Goa Board of Higher Secondary Education.

The Franciscan Hospitaller Sister’s aim at smarting a good all-round education. It has a permanent and dynamic process that aims at helping the students to fulfill herself as a person responding to the challenges of her human vocation and identifying herself progressively with the New Man, in her triple relationship with God, with the other in the world.

We aim at the integral and personal formation of the students by giving them an education that is morally, physically, and mentally sound in keeping with the national aspirations we help the students to become mature, spiritually oriented persons of character, actively useful and worthy citizens of India.

Besides catering to the scholastic needs of our students, we attach great importance to Physical Training, Sports and Games, and other co-curricular activities. Through such programs and competitions children display their talents and are helped to discover their potentials.

Novodevichy Convent, Moscow

Located on the Moscow River, Novodevichiy Monastyr ( New Maiden's Convent ) is a peaceful retreat from the bustling city of Moscow .

The site includes a beautiful 17th-century convent complex that is once again in use and an atmospheric cemetery where many of Russia's most famous writers, poets, politicians and public figures are buried.

History of Novodevichy Convent

The Novodevihcy Convent was founded in 1524 by Tsar Vasily III (1479-1533) to commemoratethe capture of Smolensk from Lithuania. That it was intended to serve not only as a religious institution but also as a fortress is evident from its strategic location and strong wall with 12 battle towers. Until the 20 th century, the convent marked Moscow's southern edge.

Having been founded by the tsar, it enjoyed an elevated position among the many monasteries and convents of Moscow and became a convent primarily for ladies of noble birth . It was also used as a prison for rebellious royals, including Peter the Great's half-sister and his first wife.

Little remains of the original structure. Most of the current building dates from the 1680s , when the convent was significantly rebuilt and enhanced after the Time of Troubles by the Regent Sofia. Sofia was later confined here by Peter the Great along with his unwanted first wife.

After the Revolution, Novodevichy's churches were closed and in 1922 it was turned into a museum. This spared it from a worse fate until the cathedral was return to the Russian Orthodox Church as a reward for backing the war effort in 1945.

Restoration of the convent began in the 1960s and in 1988 an episcopal see was once again established here. It is still officially a museum, but is used as a convent by nuns who keep a low profile.

What to See at Novodevichy Convent

Within the convent complex are several churches. The most important is the huge five-domed Cathedral of the Virgin of Smolensk (sobor Smolenskoy Bogomateri), dedicated in 1525 and built by Alexei Fryazin.

It was closely modeled after the Kremlin's Cathedral of the Assumption and contains a spectacular iconostasis with 84 wooden columns and icons dating from the 16th and 17th centuries.

According to legend, during the War of 1812 Napoléon had ordered the cathedral dynamited, but a brave nun managed to extinguish the fuse just in time.

To the right of the cathedral is the red-and-white Church of the Assumption (Uspensky tserkov) and an adjacent refectory, constructed at the behest of Sofia in the 1680s. Its interior is almost as impressive as the cathedral, with rows of vaulted windows interspersed with icons and a gilded iconstasis.

Around back is the Church of St. Ambrose , an all-white church that contains an exhibition of cassocks and 18th-century icons.

At the entrance to the convent is the Gate-Church of the Transfiguration (Preobrazhensky tserkov), widely considered one of the best examples of Moscow Baroque architecture.

At the southern gate is the Gate-Church of the Intercession (Pokrovskaya tserkov), with a red-and-white facade and three domes. The church surmounts a gateway wide enough to drive a hearse into the adjacent cemetery.

Exhibits throughout the convent display such treasures as: rare and ancient Russian paintings, both ecclesiastical and secular; woodwork and ceramics; fabrics and embroidery; and a large collection of illuminated and illustrated books decorated with gold, silver, and jewels.

The ornate belfry towering above the convent's eastern wall rises 236 feet and consists of six ornately decorated tiers. The structure is topped by a gilded dome that can be seen from miles away.

Novodevichy Cemetery (Новодевичье кла́дбище) is the Moscow's third most popular tourist site. It has a park-like ambience, dotted with small chapels and large sculpted monuments. The cemetery was built next to the Novodevichy Convent immediately upon the convent's completion.

The cemetery was first used primarily as a burial place for Moscow's feudal rulers and church officials. Later it came to be used for Russia's intellectuals and merchants, while in the 20th century, it was the burial place for many of the Soviet Union's most well-known citizens. Today, the cemetery holds the tombs of Russian authors, playwrights, and poets, as well as famous actors, political leaders, and scientists. More than 27,000 are buried at Novodevichy.

Some of the famous Russians buried there are:

The nearby Novodevichy Pond is also lovely. In the winter this is a favorite place for skating and sledging. Brass ducks by the pond were given by Barbara Bush "to the children of Russia" but later stolen by thieves. They have since been replaced.
