Unlock the World of Minecraft Problem-Solving

Imagine a world where learning is not confined to the pages of a textbook, but is an adventure in a universe limited only by your imagination. That's what Minecraft offers—a sandbox game that's become a playground for the mind, where problem-solving is not just a skill, it's a survival tool. It's a place where your creativity isn't just welcomed, it's essential.

Why Minecraft Enhances Learning

So, why does Minecraft work so well as a learning tool? It's simple. Minecraft drops you into a world where the problems you face are complex, but the tools you have to solve them are straightforward. You learn to think critically, to plan ahead, and to assess your environment. And the best part? You do all of this while having fun.

Practical Strategies for Successful Problem-Solving

Let's dive into some strategies that not only make you a better Minecraft player but also sharpen your real-world problem-solving skills.

Most importantly, these strategies are about more than just playing a game. They're about learning how to think, how to analyze, and how to overcome challenges—skills that are invaluable in school, work, and life.

Key Strategies for Mastering Minecraft Challenges

Whether you're facing down a creeper or figuring out how to keep your virtual crops from dying, the strategies you need are the same. Let's break them down.

Assessment and Preparation

Before you charge into the unknown, take a moment. Look around. What resources do you have? What challenges might you face? In Minecraft, this could mean checking your inventory before exploring a cave. In real life, it's not that different. It's about knowing what you have at your disposal before tackling a problem.

Here's how you can apply this in-game:

  • Always check your inventory before leaving your base.
  • Make sure you have the right tools for the job.
  • Plan your route and consider the risks.

And here's a real-world example to illustrate how Minecraft teaches problem-solving skills to kids of all ages:

Before starting a group project, list out all the skills your team has, the materials you need, and a plan of action. It's like making sure you have enough torches before delving into the depths of a Minecraft mine.

Resource Management

In Minecraft, resources are everything. You need them to build, to craft, and to survive. Managing these resources efficiently is key. That means not wasting what you have and always looking for ways to use what you've got more effectively.

Here's the deal:

  • Don't use diamonds to make a hoe when wood will do.
  • Keep your resources organized so you know what you have at a glance.
  • Plan for the long term, not just the task at hand.

Safe Exploration Techniques

Exploration is a big part of Minecraft, but it's not without its dangers. The same goes for any new venture in life. When you're exploring in Minecraft, you keep an eye out for hostile mobs, avoid falling into lava, and make sure you can find your way back home.

Here's what that teaches you:

  • Always have a way out or a backup plan.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings and the potential risks.
  • Keep track of your progress so you can see how far you've come and how far you need to go.

And in real life, whether you're trying something new or going somewhere you've never been, these same principles apply. It's about being aware, being prepared, and being safe.

Redstone Riddles: Engineering in Disguise

Now, let's shift gears to Redstone, Minecraft's version of electrical circuitry. It's a game-changer for players who love puzzles. Redstone allows you to create complex contraptions that can open doors, activate mechanisms, or even build a working computer in-game. But it's more than just playing with virtual electronics; it's about logic and sequencing, essential skills for problem-solving.

Collaboration in Minecraft: Learning to Work as a Team

minecraft maps problem solving

Collaboration is a cornerstone of Minecraft. When you join a server, you're part of a community. You learn quickly that big projects are easier when you work together. The same is true in life. Whether it's a school project or a professional task, teamwork can make the dream work.

Communicating Effectively with Teammates

Communication is key. When you're working on a build with others in Minecraft, you need to be clear about who is doing what. Miscommunication can lead to mistakes and frustration. So, here's a tip: always talk through your plans with your team. Make sure everyone knows their role and has the resources they need. It's a skill that will serve you well in any group setting.

Building Together: Team-based Construction Projects

Building together in Minecraft can be incredibly rewarding. You and your friends can combine your skills to create something none of you could have done alone. But remember, it's not just about the final product. It's about learning to work together, to share ideas, and to support each other. That's how you build not just structures, but also relationships.

Creative Building Challenges

Now, let's talk about creative building challenges. Minecraft gives you an incredible amount of freedom to build whatever you can imagine. But sometimes, the real challenge is doing so under constraints, like time limits or resource scarcity.

Designing and Constructing Your Dream Structure

Start with a vision. What do you want to build? Sketch it out, plan your materials, and then get to work. Remember, the first draft doesn't have to be perfect. It's a learning process. You'll refine your ideas as you go, and that's where the real learning happens—through trial and error.

Time-limited Builds: Efficiency Under Pressure

Working under a time limit can be stressful, but it can also push you to be more efficient. It's about prioritizing what's important and making quick decisions. And these are skills that are just as important in the classroom or workplace as they are in Minecraft.Survival Scenarios: Adapting to Unpredictable Environments

Survival mode in Minecraft is about more than just staying alive; it's about thriving in the face of adversity. You'll face unexpected challenges, from sudden creeper explosions to getting lost in a vast, new biome. These scenarios demand quick thinking and adaptability—qualities that are incredibly valuable in our fast-paced, ever-changing world.

Finding Solutions in Hostile Territories

When you're navigating through hostile territories in Minecraft, staying calm is crucial. You learn to assess threats, prioritize your safety, and find the most effective way to deal with challenges. This translates into real-life situations where staying level-headed can make all the difference in solving a problem.

Strategies for Handling Common Survival Challenges

Here are some strategies to handle common survival challenges both in Minecraft and life:

  • Always have an emergency kit ready—In Minecraft, this could be a chest with essential supplies. In life, it might be a first-aid kit or a set of backup plans.
  • Learn from your mistakes—If a particular strategy didn't work out, analyze why and adjust your approach.
  • Stay informed—Keep up with the latest updates in Minecraft or the current trends and changes in your field of interest or work.

My Minecraft map won't show up when I open up the game

I recently downloaded a map labeled "Laidback Parkour". When I tried opening it up on the launcher, it didn't show up, but it is definitely in the "saves" folder. Can someone tell me what's going on and help me fix this? I have followed the steps on the Wiki page, but I still don't see what the problem is.

I am pretty sure it's because you have the map folder inside another folder.

Try dragging the Equesrtia4 into the saves, rather than the Equestria. I've had issues like this with maps as well, and doing that helped me get it to work.

Luci's user avatar

You don't launch games through the Minecraft launcher. You launch it through the singleplayer button inside the Main Menu. You launch a 1.7 client game through the launcher but not a save..

Go to Singleplayer and your map should be located there.

  • Actually, I did check my single player multiple times. I also checked saves and it seems that it's not showing up, no matter what I do... –  user95427 Commented Dec 11, 2014 at 16:11
  • Is it a zip file or a folder. It must be a folder. –  SirMeepington Commented Dec 15, 2014 at 8:54

It's possible that the "level.dat" file may have become corrupted.

Go into the folder of the save that you want to "recover". Back up both 'level.dat' and 'level.dat_old'. Then, delete the original level.dat file and rename 'level.dat_old' to 'level.dat'.

If this works, you may or may not have lost some amount of progress, but the save file will show up in the world select screen and be accessible.

EnragedTanker's user avatar

I had this same problem happen to me when i was trying to play on a MEGA CUBE survival map i downloaded. My problem was when I tried to rename the file to "world 1" it ended up just creating another file in-between the saves - MEGA CUBE folders, called "world 1."

  • Open .minecraft, Saves folder, then my "fake world 1" folder.
  • Drag the map folder to desktop.
  • Click back button on folder TO Saves and delete my "Fake World 1" folder.
  • Drag the map folder from desktop to Saves.
  • Reload Minecraft

Before trying this, double check and make sure your file is "unzipped." And that your putting the downloaded map in the right folder.

I hope this helped!

Everyone knows about the urban legend of Herobrine in the Minecraft franchise. While not being an official character, this haunting person continues to get brought up online. It wasn’t going to be long before there would be an influx of different adventure maps dedicated to Herobrine. Few stand out but The Mystery of Herobrine has captivated quite a bit of attention. This storyline will give players a bit of insight behind this mysterious hostile enemy and there are multiple parts so if you finished this chapter you can move on to the next section.

It’s clear that the creator Nolan414 had taken plenty of time to craft up this game as it’s filled with locations, boss fights, and puzzles. There are of course some rules you’ll need to abide by. For instance, you can’t break blocks unless stated to, the render distance needs to be set to 15+ Chunks, and while it’s intended for a single player, you can get away with up to three other players. A puzzle map that gives players a bit of memory problem solving is Test #11232 which was created under JAYMINECRAFTON. The user released the map in 2015 and made it to be a quick puzzle adventure title that won’t hold you up too long. With that said, if you want something a bit long and challenging then this map may come to an end a bit too quick. However, on the other side of that statement, those who just need a quick map to enjoy to break things up between gaming sessions or your daily routines, this is definitely a worthy map download.

#14 Parkour School

minecraft maps problem solving

As you can probably guess from the name, Parkour School is a parkour-based map. Created by Gravityman300, the map proves to be not only popular with over 500,000 downloads since its creation but also gives players a real challenge. However, unlike some of the other big parkour challenge maps, this creation is centered around teaching players how to parkour.

Think of this map as a perfect means for beginners to learn the basics of parkour in Minecraft along with veterans honing their skills as they reach new challenging areas of the map. You’ll find that there will be themed areas, a checkpoint system, multiplayer options, and a progression system. Likewise, this map was updated to help with the progression along with adding a few anti-cheat system measures.

The map is made for Minecraft 1.7.10 so if you’re on a newer version, you’ll want to adjust your client accordingly to get the most out of the game.

#12 Vertoak City

minecraft maps problem solving

If you do not want an adventure map, parkour course or even a puzzle to solve then we suggest looking at Vertoak City. This is created under FISH95 which delivers a massive city with no goals and rules. Instead, players can freely explore the highly detailed world created. This is one map to really take in and explore as well as since its debut back in 2012, the map was viewed nearly 600,000 times.

According to the description given in the post, Vertoak is full of fully furnished rooms to explore but outside of just randomly going about the city, there are a few hidden secrets players can uncover. For instance, throughout the city, there will be secret rooms and hidden chests.

The city map is being updated with the latest version of Vertoak City being available for Minecraft 1.8.8. As a result, you’ll want to make sure you’re on the particular setting prior within your Minecraft client.

#11 Cube Survival

minecraft maps problem solving

Developed under Adam3945, Cube Survival is a survival map that tasks players to go through several cube biomes. Made for single players, players will need to explore each of the seven biomes for a hidden chest. Within the chest will be resources needed to progress along with obsidian blocks, but you’ll need to be careful as you advance. Each biome will be more challenging than the last and once you complete all seven biomes then you’ll be able to head into the nether.

Your goal within the nether will be tracking down the Book of the Damned and destroying it, but it will prove to be difficult. This map will also abide by the day and night cycle so if you wish to avoid danger then you’ll need to build up a shelter within a cube and bunker down until sunrise.

An updated version of the map also included even more challenges to take on though if you want a full list of challenges, the handbook at the start of this map will give you a full breakdown. This map is also intended for Minecraft 1.7, though you’ll want to take a look at the various notices regarding the map within the post in the download link below.

#10 SkyBlock

minecraft maps problem solving

There are a number of different survival maps to enjoy but one of the classic go-to maps in this category is SkyBlock. Chances are you’ve seen people play these maps online and they have become quite popular. Essentially SkyBlock is a small island that hovers above the ocean with nothing else in sight.

With this map, players are forced into creating resources using very little objects from the start. You’ll need to carefully expand out your island and grow useful resources. This is meant to be a challenge so for those just starting out, you may have to experiment a bit before you’ll really get the island growing.

The map we’re looking at is created by Noobcrew which has a set of rules and challenges for you to complete. When it comes to the rules you’ll only have to abide by three of them. Don’t jump off the island, don’t bridge your way into the mainland and lastly, play on the easiest difficulty.

Outside of the rules, a list of challenges is available for you to check off. With fifty challenges, you’ll be grinding away on your small plot of land but to highlight some of the challenges you’ll need to complete, players will have to craft jack ‘o’ lanterns, collect fifty birch logs, collect sixty-four bone meal, and craft twenty cobblestone stairs.

minecraft maps problem solving

PayDay 2: Endgame is one of the Minecraft maps which act out as an adventure type game. If you’re familiar with the PayDay video game franchise, this is a Minecraft version of the series. For those unfamiliar with PayDay, this is a video game map in which players will perform heists, stealing money and leaving the scene quick and clean.

Though, that’s easier said than done as most gamers will find that not everything will according to plan, causing a massive shootout with the law. With payday 2: Endgame from creator XANDER369, players will find up to three hours of gameplay that will be spread across seven playable heists.

Not only can you enjoy this game as a single player experience, but the game map does allow up to four-player co-op. Likewise, the creator behind this map has developed animated texture packs, custom sounds, item shops, custom mobs, achievements, Easter eggs, and three different locations to progress through including Washington, Shanghai, and Las Vegas.

Noted in the post, players will have to download and abide by a few different resources in order to get the full experience as intended for the game.

#8 Assassins’ Creep

minecraft maps problem solving

Assassin’s Creep is a play on the Assassin’s Creed video game franchise. If you’re familiar with the series then you know that there is a big play on parkour. Throughout the series, players are often climbing up tall buildings, scaling rooftops, making insane leaps from ledges in order to reach the ground target.

As you may have guessed, Assassin’s Creep is a parkour Minecraft map. Within the game, players are tasked with collecting nine wool blocks. Each block is placed beyond a parkour challenge for you to progress through.

Once players have collected all nine of the wool scattered throughout the map then you’ll be able to unlock the final dungeon. Of course, there are some little Easter eggs to discover throughout the map and wanted posters to collect if you wish to explore.

Overall, the rules are simple such as playing on peaceful difficulty along with not breaking or placing any blocks. Furthermore, within the post, there is a texture pack recommended for the map.

#7 30 Ways To Die

minecraft maps problem solving

30 Ways To Die is a puzzle based map. The game map is created to include a total of thirty levels where players must solve the various traps in order to kill your character. The traps and puzzles continue to get harder after each level.

Luckily, if you’re unsure of just what to do, there is a helpful guide button on each course to reveal just how to complete the level in order to move on. If you enjoy the game, there are other titles in the works with the creator of this particular map, Zed49, promising to create a larger sequel.

#6 Zombie Castle Defenders

minecraft maps problem solving

If you enjoy Call of Duty Zombies then you’ll want to check out Zombie Castle Defenders. The map was created by MNOPJH and acts similar to the popular game mode. Players will be fighting off a variety of zombies in a wave-based format.

There is a total of ninety-nine waves to go through all of which will have different waves of zombies that will spawn. Players simply have to defeat the zombies as they make their way to your location. You’ll want to be careful as the game only grants players six lives.

Again, much like the Call of Duty Zombies game mode, players will also have the ability to buy weapons. After each wave, the game will reward players with two sand blocks which can be used to buy additional towers within your fort, random chest purchases or even weapons.

Within the map are secret areas that will give a history lesson on the park and its owners. Players can attempt to track down where all of the secret areas are on the map while enjoying the ride creations.

#4 Herobrine’s Mansion

minecraft maps problem solving

Everyone by now knows about horror tale of Herobrine and Minecraft so it’s no surprise that there would be maps based on the character. One of the more popular maps to play is Herobrine’s Mansion, which was created by Hypixel.

This particular map offers new enemies, boss fights, new items and a grand adventure. The storyline includes up to two hours of gameplay and there are no mods required to run the map. There is however a list of rules on what not to do on the map such as not sleeping in a bed otherwise it can cause some game glitches.

#3 Herobrine’s Return

minecraft maps problem solving

Following up after completing Herobrine’s Mansion, players may find an interest in playing Herobrine’s Return. This is another map crafted by Hypixel which picks up after the story of Herobrine’s Mansion. As a result, you can expect new boss fights, scripted events, side quests, and another two hours of gameplay.

Of course, much like Herobrine’s Mansion, the creator suggests that the game is played with friends, though you can opt to play alone if you wish to.

#2 The Tourist

minecraft maps problem solving

If you’re looking for something a bit lengthier then we suggest checking out The Tourist which clocks in at four hours. The map was created by Stratocrafteur where players will get a massive map to play within, a custom soundtrack and a slew of mini-games.

#1 Chunk Error

minecraft maps problem solving

Similar to the SkyBlock map, Chunk Error tasks players to survive on a floating island. However, there is a bit more to it than the standard SkyBlock game style maps. Created by HYDRO54, this map doubles as an adventure for players to go through.

Players are trapped in a corrupt saved file and in order to escape, they must complete a series of tasks. After completing the tasks, a new island will appear with additional tasks to complete.

minecraft maps problem solving

Those of you who like a good brainteaser will want to give Calculate Your Escape a chance. This is a puzzle game that will require players to carefully look at everything and attempt to solve the different puzzles which unlock additional rooms. It’s a newer map that’s been put together by creator Snowhiro, but so far players that have taken the challenge have thoroughly enjoyed it, despite certain areas stumping them. If you do opt to take the challenge then you can use this video which offers solutions for all the puzzles in case you want to skip a room and progress further.

minecraft maps problem solving

This is a bit of a unique map as it’s a massive city that’s filled with popular buildings from all around the world. You can find nearly 100 cities represented throughout the map whether that be Bangkok, Detroit, Hong-Kong, Oslo, Paris, or Rio just to name a few. It’s a highly detailed map and you can freely explore the area as there’s no story mode to go through this map. Likewise, you can always build on the map and further replicate iconic buildings that might be missing.

Once Human: Power Surge Build Guide

The elder scrolls online: gold road review - disappointingly tone deaf, summoners war codes - updated daily.

Minecraft is a quintessential sandbox title for experienced and inexperienced players alike. It allows you – and indeed the community encourages you – to do slightly unrealistic things like building a house underwater , all the way up to ridiculous things such as  playing the game using a bob-it .

RELATED:  Minecraft: Memes For Longtime Players

However, great creative freedom comes with great responsibility. Or, rather, great bugs and glitches. It's hard to allow players to do whatever they want without a few mistakes slipping into live versions of the game. These are a few of the most common problems that players have in Minecraft and the ways that you can fix them.

Ghost Lighting

Minecraft Lighting Glitch Bug Solution - Screenshot from a Minecraft player looking at a wall where one corner has incorrect, dark lighting

Minecraft has gorgeous lighting (that is only enhanced by beautiful fan-made mods and texture packs) and a day-night cycle to keep your experience flowing and varied . It's extra odd, then, when a group of blocks isn't lit up properly.

RELATED:  Minecraft: Everything You Need To Know About Managing Hunger

It's caused, as u/Avantir on Reddit explains , by Minecraft incorrectly loading in the chunks and sub-chunks. To fix it, locate the subchunk that the lighting problem appears in and place a block within it . Then, you'll be able to reload the world and find that it's fixed! Unfortunately, the block(s) you put in the chunk needs to stay there, you can't remove it, so try to find a creative way to include it in your build!

Chunk Glitching

Split image of Minecraft - Chunk loading glitch screenshots from Minecraft player

This glitch causes a chunk of Minecraft to spastically and rapidly shift between biomes, as shown above by Ordigamer on YouTube . It's easy to panic upon seeing this glitch but there's no need! There's an easy fix.

Exit into the menu and click on options. From there, click on the button labeled "Video Settings." Once you've arrived here, just scroll a little until you find the toggle-setting labeled "Use VBOs:" – if you're having this glitch, this setting probably reads as "Use VBOs: OFF" so you'll just click on it to change it to "Use VBOs: ON" and then hit done. Voila – your Minecraft world has been cured!

Infinite Loading Screen

Minecraft Loading Screen with Mojang Logo

The name tells you everything you need to know in this bug: it means that the game loads forever and you never get around to any of the good stuff! Lots of players have this issue, especially when playing version 1.16 on the PlayStation or Xbox.

Conventional nerd wisdom is your best solution for the glitch. Just uninstall Minecraft from your device and reinstall it ! Console players need not worry – your worlds and saves will be retained on the cloud for you to play after it finishes reinstalling. Boot up the game again and enjoy!

Visual Glitches

Minecraft Visual Glitch Bug Solution - Screenshot from a Minecraft player where their screen has glitched out and is showing a lot of incorrect stuff

Visual glitches and errors are common for brand new Minecraft users. Lots of folks have heard it said that Minecraft is the game that will run on any computer; that may have been true in Minecraft's early days but it's much more advanced now. It still doesn't need a high-end gaming rig to run, of course, but it can't necessarily thrive on the tech that used to be standard.

The visual glitch in the image above and others like it are caused by outdated tech . In this case, the player was using a graphic card that was six years out of date. Don't panic – you may not need to buy a new computer entirely. If you have a PC, lots of folks online are happy to walk you through the process of installing new parts.

Magician-In-Training Block

Minecraft screenshot looking down on invisible dirt block where grass is still growing

Minecraft does have magic – the beloved enchantment table – but the blocks shouldn't be pulling magic tricks in the middle of a strip-mining session. Some players find that mining blocks too fast will cause the block to look like it's disappeared, but will actually just become invisible.

RELATED:  Minecraft: Tips For Building A Two-Story House

There are multiple things you can try in order to fix this problem. Some people have success by taking blocks from their inventory and putting them down where the invisible block has formed (though you'll have to find it), at which point you can remove the new block and fix the problem . Others found that if they went into their game settings and modified their view distance , the invisible blocks went away. Or, pressing F3 + A at the same time will cause all the chunks to reload and may fix the problem. As a last resort, always try shutting down your world and Minecraft, then load back in.

The "You're Gonna Be Late For School" Glitch

Minecraft character sleeping in a red bed while a creeper looks through the window

Another infamous glitch in Minecraft means that the player can't leave their bed after sleeping in it. While the chat features usually still work properly, trying to move will be totally useless – your character just hangs out in bed all morning long.

The simplest solution is to use a command to teleport you somewhere else   since the chat is available , but it doesn't always work. If that fails, simply leave the game and reboot it. This will force your character to leave the bed (though it's not the most convenient solution). If you find that you're having this problem a lot, try to avoid whatever's causing it: common causes include the sleep charm and the vanilla bed.

How Minecraft Teaches Problem Solving

My kids got into Minecraft a long time ago. It’s been so long now that I can’t remember a time when they didn’t play it. At first, I was concerned that they were spending too much time mining and building, but, the more I watched, the more I realized that they were actually learning valuable skills – like problem solving . I’ve written before about how we use Minecraft in homeschooling and some of the ways we incorporate it into our lessons, but the biggest impact it’s had is that Minecraft creates problem solvers.

How Minecraft Teaches Problem Solving

How Problem Solving is Nurtured

One of the things I absolutely love about homeschooling is that it has afforded us the opportunity to be a bit unconventional. Instead of relying strictly on a rigid curriculum, we’ve been able to do a lot of student-led interest activities. For each of my kids, Minecraft played a huge role in that.

The thing about Minecraft is that everyone starts off with the same basic issues. There’s a lack of shelter, a need for food, and a desire to explore. Priorities must be placed on the most basic of tasks first or the character won’t survive.

How, for example, do you go about building a house?

How do you create doors?

How do you gather food and which animals are okay to eat?

Is it better to build near the water or in a forest?

Where are the best places to mine?

How can you create new things?

Players have to problem solve and figure things out. Sure, they can watch “cheat” videos on how to build or create things, but they still have to implement the actions themselves. I would even argue that looking up how to create something is problem solving in and of itself!

It’s All About Problem Solving

Minecraft, by its very nature, relies on players’ creativity and problem-solving skills. It requires them to use their imaginations and then figure out how to make things happen . While the game may be abstract, the need to problem solve to play it is very real.

The fact that players can test theories, try new things, experience failure in a safe way , and go on to test theories time and again, is priceless. It teaches them that failure is not the end of the world and that when you try things a different way or with a different material, you might just achieve your goals.

Teamwork Makes the Mod Work

My kids have always enjoyed playing Minecraft alone, but they also love to play together. They have played with friends in other towns, cousins across the country, and even a friend who lived on the opposite side of the world. The ability to work together as a team has helped them develop their verbal communication and problem-solving skills better than anything else they’ve ever tried. They also have a lot more fun doing it!

Minecraft may not be every family’s cup of tea, but for my kids it has provided an outlet for self-expression and creativity. It’s taught them to think outside of the box when problem solving and made it fun to find new ways to do things.

In fact, I would even credit it as the driving force behind my son’s desire to build his own gaming computer at the age of 13. If building your own computer doesn’t take a hefty dose of problem solving skills, I don’t know what does! Here’s hoping that Minecraft encourages your children as much as it has mine.

Parent Tip: For tips on how to set up your own Minecraft server, check out this helpful guide ! It’s a lot easier than you think!

Minecraft can increase problem solving, collaboration and learning—yes, at school

by Thierry Karsenti, The Conversation

Minecraft

A video game like Minecraft in schools might trouble some parents. As a Canada research chair in technologies and education , my hope is both parents and educators take the time to learn about how using Minecraft at school could be beneficial.

Firstly, parents and teachers are right to ask questions about video gaming , particularly given sometimes conflicting messages about its impact. Some researchers caution about the possible impacts of child and youth exposure to violence or problems of gaming addiction or screen saturation , while others say fears may be exaggerated and it's a matter of balance.

Parents' potential skepticism of Minecraft is understandable, given its immense appeal among youngsters. It is one of the most popular video games of all time , with more than 150 million copies sold .

But I've learned through my research that many are largely unaware of the enormous educational potential of Minecraft. Many people also don't know Minecraft Education Edition was released in the fall of 2016 and this version has been rapidly catching on at schools.

Since 2013, American and Swedish schools have been systematically integrating Minecraft into their schools, and it is being used around the world to teach science , urban planning and foreign languages . Masses of educational applications and experiences using Minecraft are available on online sites and forums.

In Montréal, a number of schools joined a contest in which students use Minecraft to reproduce historic sites and events in celebration of the city's 375th anniversary, called Mission 375 . With my team at the University of Montréal, we felt it important to investigate the educational potential of Minecraft in order to provide a deeper understanding of the impacts on young learners.

Gaming for learning

So why all the interest in video games? Compelling research exists about the benefits of gaming for learning. Educational technology researchers have found that video games capture children's attention and provide particularly favorable conditions for learning and have shown positive effects on cognitive, affective and psychomotor functioning .

When players are fully engaged in a gaming task, they enter what psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls the "flow state," also known as "the zone," a state highly conducive to learning.

While becoming deeply engrossed in gaming is sometimes depicited in a negative light or only associated with addiction, in fact this state can be harnessed to support or advance learning goals. For example, in this task-focused state, players are highly receptive to learning embedded in the game scenario. Creativity, student engagement and collaboration between users are just some of the aptitudes that are known to be developed through gameplay.

In addition, video games can help today's youngsters cope with a future world requiring more and more digital literacy. In other words, they will need 21st century skills .

Minecraft to teach curriculum

My team and I adopted an exploratory research design to highlight the main uses of Minecraft in a school setting and to identify any benefits of using Minecraft at school. We developed a program called Minecraft Master where students had to complete more than 40 different tasks. Tasks were closely linked to the school curriculum; for example, students have to create a navigable map, making use of language, mathematics and spatial design, something we asked them to do with Minecraft.

We formed a partnership with one Montréal school. Participation was open to 118 Grade 3 to 6 students in an after-school program based on computers available. Registration took place during recess, on a first-come-first-served basis and parental consent was compulsory. Most of the students took four blocks of six weeks of Minecraft during the school year (an equivalent of about six months).

With the support of a program facilitator, students worked individually and in teams to digitally build structures such as impressive houses, a soccer stadium, a space ship, a railroad track to the Titanic and the Titanic itself.

Researchers also attended some sessions. We studied the main impacts on learning to investigate how gamified learning interventions may increase student engagement and enhance learning . We used a combination of data collected from surveys, interviews,"think aloud" protocols (where students speak their problem-solving strategies out loud), journals, tracking of student progress and digital footprints. Using these various methods allowed substantial data triangulation and validation.

The educational impacts we found were encouraging . The students showed a heightened motivation towards school , stronger computer skills, greater problem-solving skills, expanded reading and writing skills, a development in creativity and autonomy and increased collaboration with classmates.

The results of the studies we conducted confirm that Minecraft has real educational value. Notably, gaming allowed the students to fully engage in activities that were both educational and fun .

Planned, supported, purposeful

However, it is important to understand that the use of Minecraft in our context was planned, supported and purposeful. This structure is crucial for a successful educational use of the game. Without such boundaries, students might not want to stop playing and learning advantages could be wasted.

Technologies, games and other "screen-related" activities can be a fun experience for students. But it is important to balance screen time with other activities that are essential for students' development such as physically active play , reading, etc. Both parents and teachers can help students find this balance by working together on some rules about technology use.

Therefore, it is incumbent on both parents and teachers to structure the use of video games such as Minecraft to ensure that they provide students with appropriate support for the use of educational technologies. Such supervision would allow them to fully benefit from the incredible potential of this game.
