KGF Chapter 2 review: Yash's film is an explosive tale of brash, unapologetic and larger-than-life characters

Kgf chapter 2 review: this yash-starrer is an immersive film that is worth the hype and one of the finest sequels to have come out in a long time..

It was only recently that I sat down to watch KGF part 1 and in all honesty, I didn’t understand most of it. With a screenplay that was all over the place, characters getting introduced at a pace faster than a meteoroid’s crash, and a story that picked up only post-interval, I was a bit lost too early on in the film. It was only Yash ’s introduction scene and his superlative performance that I thoroughly enjoyed. Also read: Prashanth Neel on KGF 3: ‘If people love it, we could continue the franchise’

Yash stars as Rocky in KGF: Chapter 2, the sequel to the 2018 blockbuster.

However, with its sequel, KGF: Chapter 2 , director Prashanth Neel has created something that’s way more immersive and worth all the hype that he managed to sustain for three and a half years since the first part. KGF 2 once again recreates the dark and deadly world where chopping heads and slitting throats is the norm. Gunshots are fired at whim and there’s no remorse in anyone's heart. One of the finest sequels to have come out in a long time, KGF 2 takes off right from where the first part ended.

As Anand Ingalagi (Anant Nag), the author of El Doradao is hospitalised and can no longer narrate the story of KGF (Kolar Gold Fields) and rise of Rocky, his son Vijayendra Ingalagi (Prakash Raj) takes over. In his words, Raja Krishnappa Bairya aka Rocky Bhai has built an “indestructible empire” in KGF and wants to conquer even bigger things. While he has already killed Garuda in part 1 and turned ruler of the gold mines, in the sequel, he comes face to face with the deadly Adheera ( Sanjay Dutt ), who won’t let an outsider take over something that he helped build. Meanwhile, Rocky’s power-hungry games have also caught the attention of Prime Minister Ramika Sen (Raveena Tandon), who wants his downfall and death.

KGF 2 starts on a high note and dives into the stories of the characters it had well established in part 1. As the story unfolds, it brings in a lot many characters without interrupting the pace of the story or screenplay. Touted as a hard-core action flick, the way these scenes have been shot with so much detail, it creates a visual spectacle in its truest sense. While most of KGF world revolves around Rocky’s rise to fame and power, chapter 2 gives us a peek into his emotional side as well with a love story and flashbacks that keep reminding us of the reason behind what he does. KGF 2 is loaded with heavyweight dialogues, beautifully choreographed action sequences and larger-than-life characters, which you may not relate with but definitely enjoy watching onscreen.

Rocking Star Yash returns to screen as the raw and ruthless hero. He exudes machoism, makes bad look stylish. He isn’t your charming men types and doesn’t evoke sympathy even in the emotional scenes. He breathes life into his character and delivers his best. His lines, no matter how weird they sound, invite whistles and cheers and even in the most serious scenes, he triggers some laughter. Making him look even better and competitive on screen, KGF 2 introduces us to a ferocious antagonist in Dutt. Inspired by Vikings and known for his viciously violent acts, Sanjay aces as a menacing villain. Even in the limited screen time, he matches up to the crazy that Yash brings on screen. Their goosebumps-inducing action sequence towards the climax is worth every penny of that ticket price and has been magnificently shot. Raveena Tandon as the Prime Minister, delivers an earnest performance and just with a handful scenes, leaves a lasting impact.

Amid all these well etched out characters, Rocky’s love interest, Reena (Srinidhi Shetty) is somewhat the odd one out. I mean even if she wasn’t in the story, it wouldn’t really have changed much. In fact, there’s quite an irony in the character sketch she’s given. Rocky keeps her with him at KGF and calls her ‘entertainment’ but doesn’t touch her because he feels women and kids can’t be forced into anything.

Nevertheless, with so much to soak and enjoy on the big screen, KGF 2 is a perfect action potboiler if you have a penchant for such films. If you can’t handle too much action and blood, this world might not be for . But Yash is just unmissable.

Director: Prashanth Neel

Cast: Yash, Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Srinidhi Shetty

KGF Chapter 2 Movie Review: Yash and Sanjay Dutt steal the show in this terrific action flick

Director prashanth neel's kgf: chapter 2 starring yash, sanjay dutt and raveena tandon is a paisa-vasool action entertainer. with several goosebumps-inducing build-up scenes, the film is a worthy sequel to kgf: chapter 1..

Listen to Story

Yash's KGF: Chapter 2 hit the theatres on April 14.

After Allu Arjun's Pushpa and SS Rajamouli's RRR, it's now time for Yash's KGF: Chapter 2 to set your screens on fire. Quite literally. The first part, KGF: Chapter 1, ended on a high note and managed to keep curiosity alive for over 3.5 years. With KGF: Chapter 2's release today (April 14), Yash and director Prashanth Neel have hit it out of the park once again.

Raja Krishnappa Bairya AKA Rocky Bhai (Yash) is now the ruler of Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) after killing Garuda. In Prakash Raj's words, Rocky has built an indestructible empire in KGF with his clever thinking and quick wit. As he plans to extend his empire, his enemies take the help of the mighty Adheera (Sanjay Dutt) to finish him. From here, it becomes a battle of machismo. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ramika Sen (Raveena Tandon) fears the meteoric rise of Rocky Bhai. How do they tackle Rocky forms the story.

Like Baahubali, Prashanth Neel did a clever job of establishing the characters and plot in the first part. The second part, KGF: Chapter 2, shows the enemies unable to handle Rocky's rise as the messiah of the masses. The sequel has enough meat in terms of story, which comes as a huge advantage. Rocky has only one dream to fulfil and he fears no one and nothing.

Prashanth Neel's KGF: Chapter 2 is replete with 'mass' moments not just for Yash but also for Sanjay Dutt. These scenes are aplenty and come at frequent intervals only to get us hyped up for what's about to come. With Sanjay Dutt, Prashanth found a menacing villain, who has an equal weightage as the hero.

Be it Rocky's introduction sequence or the climax fight between Yash and Sanjay Dutt, every scene is stylishly shot and grasps us into the world of KGF. However, the downfall of the film is its uneven pacing. Certain sequences featuring Srinidhi Shetty and Yash's flashback sequences bog down the momentum. Hence, the overall pacing gets affected.

Yash is flamboyant as Rocky Bhai. It is safe to say that he has breathed life into the role and looks at ease when he mouths the tacky dialogues. He owns them and it totally works. Similarly, Sanjay Dutt's Adheera, who is inspired by the Vikings, strikes fear with his violent activities. Sanjay's performance, even though with less screentime, is effective. Raveena Tandon as the PM of India delivers an earnest performance.

Srinidhi Shetty's role is quite disappointing and problematic. Rocky brings her home as he considers her 'entertainment.' However, he doesn't touch her, because he believes that women and children cannot be touched without consent. Isn't it quite contradicting? Such conflicting ideas makes you question the intention of the character.

KGF: Chapter 2's stunt sequences deserve a special mention. They are grand, inventive and do not defy logic in most places. Though Yash and Sanjay Dutt are shown as two invincible men, they do get shot and hurt while pitted against each other.

Editor Ujwal Kulkarni's work is sleek in most places. However, the black-out pattern in editing spoils the overall effect in some places. Cinematographer Bhuvan Gowda and Ravi Basrur's music have elevated KGF: Chapter 2 to a different level.

KGF: Chapter 2 is an immersive sequel, which has several clap-worthy moments for the audience. The climax is cathartic and brilliantly shot. Watch out for the sequence!

Review: 'KGF: Chapter 2' betters its predecessor in every department

  • Release Date: 14/04/2022
  • Cast: Yash, Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Prakash Raj, Achyuth Kumar
  • Director: Prashanth Neel

KGF: Chapter 2  begins exactly where  Chapter 1  had left off. Rocky (Yash) has killed Garuda and has taken control of the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF). The conspirators who had sent him to kill Garuda are taken aback by this sudden change of fate and decide to eliminate Rocky. However, Rocky proves to be equal to the task and easily subdues them with his swag and muscle power. In desperation, the conspirators turn to Adheera (Sanjay Dutt), a vicious and brutal killer who was presumed dead and has a legitimate claim to the throne of KGF. He makes a towering comeback and nearly brings Rocky to his knees. What is left to be seen is how Rocky responds. He has a history of hitting back the hardest when pushed to the wall. Will he do the same again or will Adheera prove to be too strong for him to contend with. To know the answers to those questions, you have to watch the film at a theatre near you.

Movie Review| KGF: Chapter 2 is an explosive sequel powered by a terrific Yash

A still from 'KGF: Chapter 2' (Photo| Cinema Express)

Four years ago, the makers of KGF: Chapter 1 made a promise to take Kannada cinema to new regions and audiences. They are now back with KGF: Chapter 2, and it’s fair to say that the promise has been kept. Written and directed by Prashanth Neel, the KGF films have appealed to the entire nation’s consciousness and reinvented the time-tested story of an underdog’s triumph against all odds. When the underdog is the seemingly invincible Rocky Bhai (Yash), every element of the masala template is dialled up to astronomical levels.

The second part resumes from where the first part ends. We now see the “pillars” of Narachi being forced to accept Rocky as their new boss. Of course, this leads to resentment across the board, and it is clear that betrayals will hit our protagonist left, right, and centre. But KGF isn’t about plot ingenuity; it’s about inventive filmmaking. Every time we think that a high point of a particular conflict has been reached, Prashanth Neel zooms out to show that it’s all just the tip of an iceberg.

This happens on more than one occasion and stands testament to some great writing. Where in another film the meeting of Adheera and Rocky might have been shown as the ideal climactic showdown, here, we get three brilliant sequences capturing the oscillation of power, and each of these scenes delivers grandeur and intensity that the film will forever be known for. There’s also the hyper-stylised violence that was such an important part of the first film. Sure, there is a lot to discuss where the film falls on the moral spectrum, but the arresting visual style keeps analysis at bay.

The big problem is the terribly underwritten female lead. Srinidhi Shetty’s Reena suffers from a severe case of Stockholm Syndrome, and it’s hard not to feel sympathetic for why she gets relegated to the background. Even smaller roles like Easwari Rao’s character get neatly rounded arcs. The film also runs the risk of feeling bloated, especially in the pre-interval portions, when layer after layer gets packed in.

There are one too many villains and crisscrossing storylines. In fact, I wasn’t sure if the final few minutes do justice to events that have taken place over two films and eight years. However, the towering performance of Yash, rooted in nonchalance, keeps us hooked. His emotional turns, more than the playful bits, are more effective, and his enraged eyes say way more than his trademark broken English does. The dialogues too add to the undercurrent of humour, but then, there are all these lines that could so easily be turned into motivational posters: “Greed is good… Greed is progress…”

Another writing highlight of KGF: Chapter 2 is how a buildup song also acts as a quick narration of the first part. It is ingenious and inventive. Discussing logic serves no purpose in such a film, but for what it’s worth, every actor stays true to Prashanth’s world. The technical team too steps up, conjuring mesmerising visuals to keep us invested in the world of KGF. Keeping the colour palette to a minimum, cinematographer Bhuvan Gowda gives us stunning visuals that capture the grandeur of the project without ever showboating. No aspect of the opulence feels wasted or excessive. Be it the vast expanses of the mines or the never-ending shots of vehicles including cars, planes, ships, bikes, helicopters… the imagery is glorious. Any showboating comes from the edit table of Ujwal Kulkarni.

Even here, in the over-the-top world of KGF, his work fits in just fine. Composer Ravi Basrur, art director Shivakumar, and stunt choreographers Anbariv are all in form as well. Every high moment of KGF: Chapter 2 is the collaborative work of these artists, and it is wonderful to see them all deliver.

The pan-Indian movie idea may feel like a gimmick in many films, but the KGF franchise is a true-blue example of this trend. The success of the first part has pushed the makers to dream bigger, and they have brought in names like Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Rao Ramesh, and Prakash Raj for quality and wider reach. Sanjay Dutt is menacing as Adheera, the primary antagonist, and writer-director Prashanth treats him with respect. Adheera even gets moments that place him above Rocky Bhai, and the same holds good for Raveena’s Ramika Sen as well. Both actors ace their roles.

As for Prakash Raj, Replacing Anant Nag is no easy task, and it is much credit to the writing once again that neatly brings him into the mix. The actor’s baritone brings an interesting mix of humility and pride to the narration. However, despite all these names, the film never loses focus on what it is actually about: Yash and Rocky Bhai. The relentless attempts at elevating the star gives us a fascinating film that proves once again that the world will always cherish ‘mother sentiment’ films.

At an important juncture in KGF: Chapter 2, Rocky asks his detractors to avoid pointless conversations about their territories. He adds, “The world is my territory”. If the response to this film is any indication, KGF: Chapter 2 is proof of an outsider breaking down walls to become the most unlikely pan-Indian superstar... or as he would perhaps put it, its ‘ONLY Rocking Star’.

Director: Prashanth Neel Cast: Yash, Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Srinidhi Shetty Rating: 3.5/5

KGF: Chapter 2 review: Yash film is a rollicking ride that’s worth all the hype

Yash in KGF: Chapter 2

Time and again, certain films come along that are beyond “critiquing” and instead remain in a realm of their own. These films, or call them instruments of their own fates , are often held accountable only for the grand entertainment they promise prior to their release, and when the promise is kept, they find themselves a sweet, undisturbed spot in cinematic legacy. And as south India continues to deliver on this promise with one blockbuster after another, KGF: Chapter 2 becomes the latest prominent entry to this vibrant list.

In KGF: 1 , Yash’s Raja Krishnappa Bairya a.k.a. Rocky Bhai infiltrates the ghastly underworld of Narachi as a hired hand in an attempt to assassinate the kingpin Garuda. At the conclusion, Rocky manages to behead Garuda in one grand, cinematic swipe of his sword, and frees the thousands of miners and breathes joy into their lives. The first instalment sets the tone by showcasing Rocky’s stellar rise to the top and KGF: 2 begins right where things were left off, albeit with the stakes having risen in the most unprecedented ways for Rocky. While Adheera (Sanjay Dutt), Garuda’s uncle, lurks in the darkness waiting to be unleashed, Rocky’s fame and power attract attention from the highest political powers in the country.

Vijayendra Ingalgi (Prakash Raj), son of the former journalist and author of the infamous book El-Dorado , takes over as the narrator of KGF: 2 and soon sets the context. Rocky Bhai has conquered Narachi, much to the shock and dismay of Rajendra Desai, Andrews, and politician Gurupandian. Rocky has bigger, mightier plans in mind for the place (now rechristened KGF ), and soon realises that he had been sitting on a gigantic treasure trove all along, one that’s much bigger than anyone knew. But, as he treads the thin line between ambition and greed, things intensify all around him so that he eventually reveals his true mettle.

Prashanth Neel, whose story unfurled in a slow-yet-intriguing manner in KGF: 1 , makes no bones about his intent with the sequel and cranks up the energy right from the word go. However, despite his attempts to keep things running at the same pace, the plot runs out of enough material to make this as riveting and thrilling as the first instalment.

Much of KGF: 2 is a test of Rocky Bhai’s tenacity – both physical and emotional. As he expands the mining operations of KGF, he turns it into his hidden fortress and becomes a demigod in the eyes of the people, while Adheera’s menacing presence looms larger than ever. Neel’s story utilises all the many open ends of KGF: 1 to perfection and one gets to see many unfinished angles – of Inayat Khalil, Shetty, etc. – justified to great effect.

The filmmaker’s conviction shows through his characters, like Ramika Sen (Raveena Tandon), the newly elected prime minister of India, who becomes Rocky’s stiffest political and bureaucratic opponent. Raveena, who returns to Kannada cinema after almost two decades, packs a punch, delivering each line with gusto. She makes Ramika a memorable character in a world that sometimes seems rigged with excessive male bravado.

The film has a strong emotional core too and “mother sentiment” echoes throughout, along with evocative flashbacks to Rocky’s childhood. Veteran actor Easwari Rao joins the cast, adding more depth to the story. Rocky’s love life blossoms on the side, Reena Desai (Srinidhi Shetty) promising him a wholesome, happy familial life. It is perhaps this love track, which begins on a rather problematic note with respect to consent, that remains the most half-baked, and one sees the story ebb and flow as a result.

Sanjay Dutt is certainly a striking figure on the screen in his Vikings avatar and is his imposing best in the breath-taking action sequences. But his character arc is rendered monotonous after a point, offering little depth and perspective. Fans are treated not once but multiple times to the much-awaited face-off between Adheera and Rocky Bhai, and one tends to let go of all the other shortcomings in sheer wonder.

The main star of the film, however, is the exceptional synergy between Prashanth Neel and his team. The filmmaker’s vision is apparent in every frame and he doesn’t drop the ball on the intensity even for a microsecond. In what will soon become a historic actor-director collaboration, Yash rises to the occasion and casts a mesmeric spell on the audience with his swagger and charm. From charismatic action sequences to showing raw emotion, the actor looks tailor-made for the film’s larger-than-life milieu. Due credit must go to his stylist Saniya Sardhariya whose retro-themed costumes add a new dimension to the overall opulence. Ace art director Shiva Kumar’s set pieces take the film to a whole new level and aid immensely in bringing Prashanth Neel’s unique world to life. Bhuvan Gowda, the cinematographer, creates his own visual palette and doesn’t seem too bogged down by the period setting of the story – each frame, each swipe of the camera is beautiful and admirable.

And yet, the two most vital cogs of the wheel turn out to be editor Ujwal Kulkarni and music composer Ravi Basrur. Ujwal’s slick editing gives the film’s mayhem and bustle an original perspective and brings an almost Mad Max kind of energy. Ravi Basrur’s score ranges from Kannada folk to hard rock and western classical, and very rarely does one get to encounter a soundtrack that matches beat to beat with the rhythm of the screenplay.

For all the Rocking Star Yash fans across the world, KGF: 2 will be a rollicking ride that’s worth all the hype. Despite the few shortcomings, viewers are bound to recall the film forever for its outrageous imagination and incredible technical finesse.

Fans are advised to stay seated until the very end for a major surprise, concerning a potential sequel, that awaits them!

K.G.F: Chapter 2 Movie Review: A Rocky Stack Of Set-ups And Punch Lines

K.G.F: Chapter 2 Movie Review: A Rocky Stack Of Set-ups And Punch Lines

Cast:  Yash, Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Srinidhi Shetty, Prakash Raj

Director:  Prashanth Neel

Language:  Tamil

MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD, but K.G.F: Chapter 2 isn't exactly an unpredictable film.

There is a scene just before the climax where Reena (Srinidhi Shetty) leaves her palatial mansion and comes to the mines to meet Rocky ( Yash ). She tells him she's feeling unwell, she doesn't like the food, she's been advised not to walk etc. Rocky doesn't get the hint. She then says she's craving mangoes and tamarind. He still doesn't get it, but by now his confidante Khasim (Harish Rai) has caught on. And then she says, "Your mother is coming," touching her stomach. Just as Rocky begins to understand that Reena is pregnant, against the background of a loud coup by Adheera ( Sanjay Dutt ), you know what's about to happen. Yep. Reena takes a bullet to her clutched stomach and drops dead. This sparks the beginning of the end.

The genius of K.G.F: Chapter 2 is its ability to build anticipation for the most obvious and over-squeezed Indian cinema tropes and then go on to deliver satisfying pay-offs. It is also the film's biggest bane, because apart from the build ups, there isn't really much else.

K.G.F: Chapter 2 's first half is entirely smoke blown up the hero's ass — the voiceovers call him a tiger, a hawk, a snake, a tornado, a hero, god and all sorts of things. The various characters — a TV channel editor-in-chief, the son of an author, the main villain, mini-villain, sub-villain, protégé about to die, mother of the protégé about to die, house keepers, thugs, children and so on — sing praises, in dialogue, for the hero. There is also a sequence of a mother giving build up for her infant son, singing proudly while coughing blood.

And then there is the not-at-all-humble Rocky speaking about himself. Take this, for instance. Rocky calls Khasim asking him for a favour. Khasim says, "Yes, what do you need?" Suddenly, Rocky launches into a generously punctuated delivery of self-aggrandising monologue: What I want now is what I've always wanted. Even as a young child being beaten on the streets of Bombay….and on and on. Imagine making a trunk call, asking for a favour and then speaking yourself up in a base voice. I shudder. Rocky doesn't.

The most irritating thing about this part of the film is that in the world of K.G.F , no one ever gives a straight answer, no wonder they're all so tired. If there was a 'who knows the most idioms and metaphors' contest, writer-director Prashanth Neel and his dialogue writing team would win it by miles.

Also generously included in this is a love track. Rocky kidnaps Reena and imprisons her in a fancy bedroom full of designer clothes. He calls her his "entertainment," perhaps Prashanth Neel breaking the fourth wall and answering critics' questions here. Yet, the moment she's shown by some children that he's a man with a heart of gold — which doubles up as the "previously on KGF " bit cleverly interspersed into the film — she miraculously develops Stockholm syndrome and falls in love. Srinidhi tries her darnedest to be the indignant-yet-cute love interest. But, even the best of actresses cannot save a character so vacuous and writing so unimaginative; Srinidhi stands no chance.

By the 80th or so minute, I found myself exhausted to the bone, desperate for a hot cup of coffee to keep me awake and some faith in humanity to return to my seat and finish the job I started. Thankfully, the interval came soon enough and got the break I deserved.

Also Read: K.G.F: Chapter 2 Is A Thoroughly Satisfying Masssterpiece That Travels At 1000 Bullets Per Minute

The post-interval film, or K.G.F: Chapter 2.2, is better and it moves faster. Rao Ramesh as CBI officer Raghavan and Raveena Tandon as Prime Minister Ramika Sen bring a semblance of the real world into a film that was too seeped into an over-indulgent underworld, populated by men who think the world of themselves. Even within scenes where Raghavan is giving build up for Rocky in front of the Prime Minister — he was a child in Bombay, he was beaten for eating, he was beaten for talking, he was beaten for standing, he was beaten for standing up for himself…you get the drift — there is some element of action that moves the film forward. The set pieces are grander and more impactful. The climax is a well-choreographed action sequence that escalates consistently.

Compared to K.G.F: Chapter 1 , this film is technically stronger. Stunt choreographer AnbAriv scores yet again this week, after a diametrically opposite but equally effective work in Beast . Sound designer and composer Ravi Barsur has gone all out — loud and rip-roaring even for the most mundane scenes — helping a great deal in keeping the audiences awake. Cinematographer Bhuvan Gowda is clever with the muddy monotones, generous with slo-mos, and his love for Yash shows. Production designer Shivakumar makes the film look grand.

Overall, if you're a fan of the genre, the second half might be redeeming for you, even if the first half is testing. In that, K.G.F: Chapter 2 is loyal to its prequel, its genre, its narrative and its purpose. If you can buy into it, it's cathartic.

For me, though, K.G.F: Chapter 2 was just a rocky stack of moderately enjoyable action blocks, strewn sporadically in the second half. That just wasn't enough.

Reena ( Srinidhi Shetty , who leaves a mark as the barely-there love interest of a complicated man) is sweating, and she complains that the man who is keeping her hostage in the name of love, should do something about it. “ Maniyammaa, appalam jaakiradhai ,” warns Rocky ( Yash ) after making arrangements accordingly with one of his henchmen. Having seen many films where a brutish man pursues a woman, you understand the task at hand. You wait for an extravagant air-conditioning machine to appear, but Rocky Bhai has something entirely else on his mind. In a nutshell, this is what Prashanth Neel ’s K.G.F: Chapter 2 is all about. Bigger beyond the viewer’s wildest dreams.

Is it always better? Well, definitely better than the first instalment. Characters like Adheera and Ramika Sen, played fabulously by Sanjay Dutt and Raveena Tandon , needed extensive writing. It is not that they aren’t scary enough. They are, but the intimidation comes from the actors, not the script. However, I cannot call this film under-written. If anything, it is the opposite – every scene is densely populated with characters. KGF 2 doesn’t know what a quiet moment is, and it is better for it. Armed with Ravi Basrur’s score, every instant vibrates with chaotic energy. It puts a willing viewer in a trance and keeps them there. For the first time in a long while, I enjoyed the whistles and hoots of the over-enthused. Don’t get me wrong, the film isn’t all about elevations and surpassing expectations. Beyond the chaos, there is order. Beyond the swag, there is substance.

“ Kalaas ” snickers Rocky while examining a Kalashnikov in a tense moment. While the filmmaker manages to distract us with wordplay, the callback that comes later is one of the best-executed pieces of filmmaking and writing in masala cinema. Even the violence, which gets numbingly excessive after a point, is handled with more thought than you expect in big films with big men holding big guns. The filmmaker foresaw the desensitisation, so he transforms the action sequences with thought and technique. While one chase sequence benefits from stylised editing, another mutes the sound and puts us in our shocked hero’s head, oblivious to the bloodshed going around him.

The world-building, in no small part thanks to the art department and Bhuvan Gowda’s camera work, is satisfyingly meticulous. Even the muted grimness is visually pleasing because of the way it is captured and utilised. Yash, too, does a beautiful job bringing this world alive. He is captivating as this pragmatic man whose well of affection for his mother is bottomless. The most vital thing an action superstar has to possess is conviction. To believe that he is the king of the world. To imbibe that belief with confidence enough to let him unironically walk into a room oozing swag. Yash seems to have it and then some.

I have my problems with the narrator. There are inconsistencies, and Prakash Raj , playing the son of Anand Ingalagi, is a smart choice – his voice adds heft, but his issue with his father lacks relevance and resolution. But, I have to admit, the peon that religiously listens to the story is an excellent proxy for the viewer. His enthusiasm is infectious, and the actor who plays him makes for a great hype-man. Even Eswari Rao ’s mourning mother is an update on the trope. She is never begging but bargaining; give her closure and get her blessings.

Small touches like this don’t do much for the proceedings but affect your viewing experience immensely. Choosing to introduce Rao Ramesh ’s character by having him address someone named Ramesh. A Kattappa-esque Vaanaram (a perfectly-controlled Ayyappa Sharma) whose loyalty lies with the place and not its people. “We had enough wars,” says Ramika Sen, the PM, before revising her plans for peace. “I don’t like violence,” says the hero who knows nothing else, thus establishing the idea that power begets violence and destruction. Again, it’s nothing and everything.

A saying goes, “Powerful people come from powerful places.” The narrator disagrees and says, “History was wrong. Powerful people make places powerful.” Good thing that Rocky Bhai doesn’t believe in history. But I can’t entirely agree with the narrator. Rocky does come from a powerful place – his mother. A woman in her early 20s dreams big dreams for her son. She never thinks to question them, and neither does her son. He is never taught to question his ability or its limits, which is both a gift and a curse. This is how K.G.F: Chapter 2 wins and wins big. Instead of trying to find resonance with some myth or the other, it uses a bond as elementary as the one shared by a mother and her child and weaves a legend of its own.

Yash's 'KGF Chapter 2' movie review: Rocky bhai's machismo thrills throughout

Ajish Jimmy George

Director Prashant Neel's magnum opus sequel of 'KGF Chapter 1' is all set to fight it out at the box office with Thalapathy Vijay's 'Beast'.

Indeed, the two movies have similarities and the most obvious being the heroes who can withstand the onslaught of an army alone.

With rocking star Yash in the lead, the second KGF franchise can be credited with the achievement of giving Kannada cinema a pan-India recognition.

Though critics had torn apart the first part of the film in reviews for poor editing and lack of substance, its box office performance had proven that director Neel's choices connected well with his audience.

'Chapter 2' is all about elevating the mass appeal achieved by the first part to the next level.

write a movie review of kgf chapter 2

The plot is rather simple, Garuda is dead and Rocky (Yash) now has to face the challenges posed by the people who sent him to KGF, Adheera (Sanjay Dutt) and a powerful politician Ramika Sen (played by Raveena Tandon).

If Ramachandra Raju as Garuda seemed to be a strong villain in the first part, then you should see Sanjay Dutt in the second one. It might seem far stretched to portray him as a Viking-style warrior, but he pulls it off easily.

write a movie review of kgf chapter 2

There is a tale about Adheera's sword and the blood it has seen in the past, but in the movie, it doesn't get to see much blood as Rocky has to divide his time between other enemies as well.

The character of Ramika Sen is clearly modelled after Indira Gandhi and the fabulous Raveena Tandon fits into the role perfectly, commanding the respect a prime minister deserves.

Ravi Basrur's music and background score was one factor that took the first part to people's hearts and chapter 2 also does the same magic. The 'Toofan' song gives a quick recap of the events from 'KGF Chapter 1'.

If the previous story was narrated by a journalist Anand (Anand Nag), this time his son Vijayendra (Prakash Raj) continues the task.

Also, similar to the first part, a lot of time is spent by Yash praising his own character and other characters are also allotted much time to hail Rocky's valour. While mothers and children are comfortable sharing time with Rocky bhai, others shudder in fear.

It is said that human life is not valued much in India because of the huge population, in 'KGF Chapter 2,' this is literally true as there are always more people to die. Just when you think that all the people supporting Yash in different cities of India have been killed, it is revealed that he had a reserve army of people in all those cities who would again rise to kill his enemies.

Yes, different cities in India. The scale of the movie is huge and it is not the story of a local gangster, but in Rocky's own words a “monster” who “owns India” or maybe even the world.

Rocky's love for Reena (Srinidhi Shetty) was revealed in the first part and you would have thought she too had the same feeling for him. But in the beginning of the movie itself, she is brought to 'Naraachi' as a captive and kept as an “entertainment” for Rocky. What happens next is somewhat like the way Raavan keeps Sita in 'Ramayana.' He treats her like queen and waits for her approval to marry. Unlike in Ramayana, Reena falls for Rocky after coming to know about his past and the reason for his never-ending greed for gold.

The stunts in 'KGF' were the best part of it, however, a chase sequence could have been portrayed better without the blackout pattern in editing. It had all the potential to be made like a 'Fast and Furious' chase scene. Cinematographer Bhuvan Gowda's frames are worth the big screen and though largely grey and black, the colours come into play when Rocky's swag needs it.

There is a lot of violence and also lots and lots of whistle-worthy moments in the film. If you love watching action thrillers with mass dialogues, this movie is for you. There is also a hint of a third chapter. So watch out for that as well.

KGF: Chapter 2

Kannada (Theatres)

Director: Prashanth Neel

Cast: Yash, Raveena Tandon, Prakash Rai, Sanjay Dutt

Rating: 3.5/5

'KGF: Chapter 2' is a tale from history. Once it completes its theatrical run, the two-part franchise is sure to make history in Kannada cinema.

It had been over three years since the gripping underdog story of Rocky ended on a cliffhanger. Minutes before the title card comes on screen, director Prashanth Neel makes us ready for what to expect from the follow-up of the blockbuster 'KGF: Chapter 1'. In a jaw-dropping opening scene, he shows how his passion and grandeur of scale are still intact.

Rocky bhai, the dreaded gangster, has full control of KGF after his epic elimination of Garuda, son of Suryavardhan, the heir of the gold fields. But once you own one of the most precious pieces of land, you are sure to face the heat of people with power. In comes Adheera (Sanjay Dutt), Suryavardhan's brother, and Ramika Sen (Raveena Tandon), the prime minister of India.

For the first 20 minutes, the film rides on an intense tempo with many characters slowly finding their places in the plot. In the build-up to the interval, Neel strikes a surprise that none of us can predict. And then, 'KGF: Chapter 2' takes an almighty leap.

Neel's freaky ideas are ridiculously uncompromising. He has the confidence to translate his wacky and even over-the-top thoughts on screen in an enjoyable fashion. Two scenes that bring the roof down with this kind of approach are the one inside a police station and Rocky's second big face-off with Adheera. Giving company to Neel's outrageous verve is Ravi Basrur's score, which keeps our blistering excitement at the highest level. Cinematographer Bhuvan Gowda completes the technical department triumvirate with his visuals of breathtaking appeal.

One sharp criticism of 'KGF: Chapter 1' was that it unabashedly celebrated machismo with little emphasis on conflicts. However, this film is never a one-man show as it shows Rocky consistently challenged by his rivals. He is also no longer invincible. His vulnerability makes him slightly emotional and even pushes him to think smart to defeat his powerful foes.

Neel's writing triumph lies in how we are completely accustomed to his fiery attitude of Rocky. His character graph gets interesting as Rocky becomes greedy and selfish. His relentless pursuit of fulfilling his mother's wishes might unsettle us but that makes the character authentic. It does justice to the film's idea of a powerful people making places powerful.

Neel connects the dots properly and also goes back in time at the right junctures of the plot. Prakash Rai smoothly slips into the role of Anant Nag as a narrator. The fact that his performance doesn't seem bogged down by the weight of Anant Nag's superb efforts shows what a towering actor Rai is. Rocky's return to Mumbai is a treat to watch and that shows Neel's understanding of completing an epic-like story.

'KGF: Chapter 2' is also a film of excess that's now become a trademark of Neel. You either find the film to be one hell of a show or term some of the tropes to be dramatic and old-school. Hence there is no end to melodrama in the 'mother-sentiment', and the dialogues are always punchlines (most of them are whistle-worthy ones). The narration is overstuffed so the shifts in the story feel jarring sometimes. Neel's handling of a love story needs major improvement. Though Srinidhi Shetty as Yash's lady love has more to do than the first part, their relationship lacks emotional depth.

The action sequences, with the 'cut in and out' editing pattern, are choreographed with great effort. The best of the lot is the final showdown between Adheera and Rocky, who come across as two duelling monsters.

Sanjay Dutt's Adheera, inspired by Vikings, has a fearsome appearance and gets a terrific introduction scene. His towering personality is tailormade for the character's menacing nature though the dialogue delivery seems a tad underwhelming. Perhaps the actor's portrayal in the Hindi version would be more convincing. Raveena Tandon is superb, essaying a woman in power with great confidence.

The remarkably handsome Yash takes his style quotient to another level. He is leaner, meaner, and stronger (pun intended). His emotional performance, which comes with a look of defeat on his face, reveals the performer in him.

Rocky set out to capture 'Duniya' (world and he makes the world his territory. Similarly, there are talks about the film's possible record at the box office. The 'KGF' team, with firepower in production and storytelling, shows impossible is nothing. Which means, there could even be a third part!

KGF: Chapter 2 Movie Review

KGF Chapter 1 turned out one of the biggest blockbusters due to its unprecedented elevations and making. That raised more expectations for Chapter 2 and the movie hit the screens today, after a long wait. KGF Chapter 2 made a huge prerelease business worldwide already. With the protagonist Yash being the center of the KGF story, this time the new stars Raveena Tandon and Sanjay Dutt joined in to make it much bigger. Directed by Prashant Neel, KGF Chapter 2 was released with huge hype, and here is the review from the US Premieres.

What Is It About?

The famous journalist Anand had to stop narrating the story of Rocky and KGF due to a heart stroke and his son Vijayendra Vasiraju (Prakash Raj) continues the narration. While the first chapter concluded with Rocky killing Garuda in a most shocking way, the second chapter deals with Rocky’s rule in KGF with new and unexpected enemies like Ramika Sen (Raveena Tandon) and Adheera (Sanjay Dutt) trying to take him down. How Rocky deals with his rivals and how he keeps the KGF under his thumb is all about the KGF Chapter 2.

Performances

For those who have watched the first Chapter, it is needless to explain that Yash continues the same mannerisms, style, and body language in this one too. Yash keeps up with the elevation scenes and action blocks, and he did well like earlier. The catch is that the story is completely based on elevations and fights that come in regular intervals.

Srinidhi Shetty had been given the grumpy expression that she put up in the first part and she continues the same. She has got nothing much really. Raveena Tandon appears in a strong role, but only for a brief part in the second half. She did alright in it.

Sanjay Dutt is shown as the most powerful and the mighty Adheera. There are scenes where Adheera appears the strongest and scariest, but there are also other scenes where he looks weak and dull.

Prakash Raj, Rao Ramesh, and others are fine in their respective roles and they mostly go in a flat track.

Technicalities

KGF has set the expectations on how rugged and rustic the film could be. The Chapter is no different with the dark smoke and dirt all around. The cinematography is very good and there are certain action blocks that are elevated with the set frames. The visuals are rich.

The background score is good and in fact loud at times. The screenplay is well set and so is the editing. The trimming of some slow episodes in the second half could have delivered a crisp run time.

Yash Some Action Episodes

Thumbs Down

Slow Second Half Illogical scenes Love track Some Pale Elevations

KGF Chapter 1 dealt with an outraged man taking the throne of the biggest gold mine by killing many big heads, which no one ever expected to happen. If the first part is about the rise of Rocky Bhai, the chapter is about his rule. The fearless and arrogant Rocky Bhai ruling the KGF and locking horns with the government of India is shown in this part.

Needless to say, the first part of KGF grabbed the spotlight all of a sudden due to high-octane action scenes that involve never-before elevations. The director simply repeated the same template here in the second part, except that his best elevations remained in the previous part. The plots and plans by Rocky Bhai were surprising and impressive back then, but most of them in this chapter could be anticipated.

Comparisons apart, Rocky and the ruthless Adheera confrontation scenes are interesting. Also, the climax fight between the both is engaging. The director bringing back the hammer of Rocky to face the mighty sword of Adheera is one of the good action parts.

Rocky testing the big gun at the police station is the scene that completely thrills the audience. Rocky’s visit to the police station just for one gold bar depicts how rigid he is. The firing of bullets for minutes and the red hot gun barrel shows the intensity of how particular he is for anything he wants.

In the car chase scene in the first half, Rocky taking Adheera down with ‘Kalashnikov’ armory remains among the decent action scenes.

Rocky coming face to face with the Prime Minister herself in her office with a case file and declaring his arrival and capacity is one of the highlight scenes.

Coming to the dialogues, Rocky’s mannerism of speaking in broken English worked only a little this time, but there are mention-worthy dialogues like, Biryani – Qurbani, Mongoose in Snake and Ladder game, the CEO of India, Powerful people make places powerful, Rocky’s gravity, etc.

The first half goes alright with racy narration, elevations (not as powerful as in the first part), and some powerful action episodes. The second half slows down with Adheera missing for a long time and the love track which also comes with an uninteresting song.

There is another track with Gurupandian politics in between the war of PM and Rocky Bhai. The narration at times feels racy, but most of the time it appears rushed, leaving no time for the audience to compile on what’s happening.

KGF itself is mainly based on heroism and elevations, but too many of the stunts and sycophancy without any depth in it failed to impress here. There are scenes that come and go without an actual emotion. It is like a fort of elevations alone, that may make the mass and action-loving fans look up. The reason why Rocky is after the gold is revealed in the end, but it does not really make sense when we recap everything he did for it. Well, the director left a hint in Chapter 3 that probably shows Rocky’s international crime.

Overall, KGF Chapter 2 has all the pages filled with hype and elevations in bold, but the story only in very few lines in a small font in a preface. The First Chapter of KGF was enjoyed hugely by the masses due to the stunning elevations and action scenes, but the second chapter came out with similar stuff and with more expectations. KGF Chapter 2 may get on well if and only the mass audience once again embraces it.

Bottom line: Not A Monster

KGF Chapter 2 Review: Baap of Elevation of Heroism

KGF Chapter 2 Review: Baap of Elevation of Heroism

Movie: KGF Chapter 2 Rating: 3/5 Banner: Hombale Films Cast: Yash, Sanjay Dutt, Srinidhi Shetty, Raveena Tandon, Prakash Raj, Malavika Avinash, Rao Ramesh, Eshwari Rao, and others. Music: Ravi Basrur Director of Photography: Bhuvan Gowda Editor: Ujwal Kulkarni Action: Anbariv Producer: Vijay Kirangandur Written and directed by: Prashanth Neel Release Date: April 14, 2022

“KGF”, originally made in Kannada and released in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, and Malayalam languages simultaneously, was a box-office phenomenon. The second part “KGF 2” already took the box office by storm with massive advance sales.

The pre-release buzz was on par with “Baahubali 2”. Is the second part worth all the hype? Let’s find out…

Story: ‘KGF 2’ begins with the aftermath of Garuda’s killing. Rocky Bhai (Yash) who created an army of his own in KGF becomes the most powerful man.

Meanwhile, Adheera (Sanjay Dutt) arrives to reclaim KGF. Plus, Inayat Khalil and Prime Minister Ramika Sen (RaveenaTandon) are closing in on him.

Can Rocky deal with these powerful people? What fate is in store for Rocky? Will his girlfriend Reena (Srinidhi Shetty) unite with him?

Artistes’ Performances: Yash who has got terrific swag mesmerizes us again with his style and intense performance. In the first part, he didn’t get a chance to wear designer clothes. Here, as the richest don, he wears colorful suits and grooms himself well. He oozes style in every scene. He gets dialogues that suit his mass persona. His performance is also terrific.

Sanjay Dutt as Adheera is stunning as his getup goes. His imposing personality and his demeanor have suited well to the powerful character. But his role is not that effective for the main antagonist.

Raveena Tandon steals the moments she is in. She has got her look right and has delivered a powerful performance.

Srinidhi Shetty gets a lengthier role than what she was offered earlier. Eeswari Rao makes her presence felt.

Besides Sanjay Dutt and Raveena Tandon, Prakash Raj is the new addition to the world of KGF but didn't get a role worth talking about. Rao Ramesh has a decent role.

Technical Excellence: The action sequences are stunning. Anbriv has come up with adrenaline-rushing episodes this time as well. Ravi Basrur’s background score enhances the overall experience. The cinematography and the production design are grand. But the visual effects are not effective in certain parts.

Highlights: Yash as Rocky and his swag Prashanth Neel’s dialogue writing Elevations of heroism Background score Racy screenplay

Drawback: The emotional quotient is not strong

Analysis The first part of “KGF” ended up setting the stage for a showdown between Rocky Bhai and Adheera. In the first part, we didn’t get a full glimpse of Adheera and his face. The real story of Rocky’s rise in Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) unfolds in the second part and as we have guessed, we get to see the fight between Rocky Bhai and Adheera.

Director Prashanth Neel doesn’t waste time drawing us into the world he has created in KGF. Like in the first part, the film begins with a journalist interviewing a writer who documented the developments in the Narachi Company. In the second part, Ananth Nag’s son Prakash Raj steps in to narrate the story.

Since we have already seen the story of Rocky from being an assassin to the don of KGF, the focus of the second part is on his problems with the new batch of forces.

If we see the history of gangster movies, the ‘rise’ of a don always makes an interesting watch, but his ‘rule’ doesn’t. In “KGF 2”, Prasanth Neel has played his game well. There are issues with his narrative, but he holds our interest from start to the finish, as the film is filled with many elevating scenes. He elevates heroism to the peak.

So, the drama involving Rocky and his new batch of nemesis is not as gripping. Despite the presence of big stars like Sanjay Dutt and Raveena Tandon pitching against Yash, the drama is not rousing enough.

Four episodes are the main highlight…

1. After Adheera defeats him, Rocky takes a step back and returns with a bang. The scene of Rocky attacking Adheera again in the backdrop of mines is visually stunning.

2. To get one biscuit of gold, he sets an entire police station on fire with a terrific mass moment (you can also see a glimpse of it in the teaser).

3. The scene of Srinidhi informing Yash about her pregnancy

4. Raveena Tandon’s Burma episode

Besides creating adrenaline-pumping sequences, Prashanth has written terrific dialogues. “Ikkade Talale Maaruthai Keereetalu Kaadu” is a fine example of his smart writing. Like in the first part, he abruptly cuts a scene and brings in a narrator-interviewer scene to further proceed the story, thus saving a lot of runtime.

Prashanth Neel mounts the film on a lavish scale and extracts the best output from his music director, cinematographer, and lead hero.

However, the film has its share of issues.

Yash entering the parliament hall with his own army is like taking illogicalness to the extreme. The mother-doctor sequence in the final moments is absurd. The Eeshwari Rao-her son’s episode is another forced drama.

Despite these minor issues and illogical sequences, Neel keeps churning out one cinematically highlighted moment after another.

On the whole, “KGF 2” is a total paisa vasool entertainer. It is a feast to the mass audiences. The film is like a baap of elevations and lives up to the hype. “KGF 2” provides entertainment and gives an immersive experience with mass moments.

Bottom line: Worth the hype

K.G.F: Chapter 2 Movie Review: 'KGF 2' Makes A Solid Action-Packed Sequel To Rocky Bhai's Much Awaited Saga

author-image

KGF Chapter 1 wasn't that big when released, but it created hype as time passed by. In the Hindi market, KGF was a sleeper hit, but the kind of mass following it got after the digital and TV premiere was much higher than expected. Undoubtedly, the most hyped sequel after Baahubali 2 in Hindi, or for that matter, all over India. Only if the audience could understand that hype is a different thing and the filmmaking is different. Well, that hasn't changed in Hollywood yet, so for Indian cinema it is way ahead. We saw Avengers Endgame doing crazy business at the box office, as it was a completely crowd-pleasing experience, and so, nobody gave a damn about logic, except a few tough critics. The case is very similar to KGF Chapter 2 , with one exception that it isn't a global phenomenon like Endgame , but certainly one of the biggest ones in India right now. The second chapter of the insanely violent KGF is indeed violent, and how. Just double! Mark it. Prashanth Neel delivers a fulfilling sequel to the emperor of the masses, Rocky Bhai 's long awaited action saga.

publive-image

KGF Chapter 1  ended with Garuda 's slaughter, as our Rocky Bhai ( Yash ) emerged as the ruler of Kolar Gold Fields ( K. G. F. ). The second chapter shows his kingdom and his people, who worship him like a God. We have a new antagonist called Adheera ( Sanjay Dutt ), who is back to get his lost kingdom and KGF . That's not it. We have a big political angle working as an even bigger villain in the picture called Ramika ( Raveena Tandon ). The screenplay is full of dramatic conflicts, from Rocky 's childhood, his reign, romance, pupils, villains, politics, and revenge. That isn't anything we haven't seen before, but it definitely serves the gone-dated food with new tadka.

publive-image

Yash aka Rocky Bhai , is an unstoppable force. The character is too extraordinary for any ordinary mind to digest, but sometimes that extra large significance makes it big. Something that we saw in Baahubali , as Prabhas played the unbeatable Baahubali . Yash goes on to beat that stature on occasion, and believe me, every high-scale action sequence and swaggy dialogue is going to leave fans screaming out loud in cinema halls. Sanjay Dutt's Adheera gives KGF a deadly villain who is much better than the previous one. Dutt is truly ferocious and terribly fearsome. The face-off between Rocky and Adheera is what I call an improvement from its predecessor.

publive-image

The female addition, Raveena Tandon, also adds more fire to the battlefield. She hasn't got action scenes, but she has got that powerful persona, which looks like a challenge enough for someone like Rocky, a dangerous criminal. Raveena gives a nice performance to make a solid comeback in a big commercial film. The love interest of Rocky , Reena ( Srinidhi Shetty ), has more screentime than Chapter 1 , and she looks pretty in every single scene. The supporting actors like Anant Nag , Prakash Raj and Malavika Avinash have nothing else to do but the narration, which is intriguing. Archana Jois as Rocky 's mother will remind you of a melodramatic Bollywood mother from the 70s, while Achyut Kumar , Ramesh Indira and Ramachandra Raju are sort of okay with their presence.

publive-image

KGF is lifted by hard-core action sequences that are going to create a fan-frenzy spectacle in theatres. It's not just that hammer, but whatever action scenes Yash has, they have got immense crowd-pleasing factors attached to them. The dialogues will become social media memes soon - in a positive way, I mean. " Garuda ko maarne ke liye ek Rocky paida kiya to kya dusra nahi kar sakta ?" Rocky answers in style, " Mere baap se nahi hua to mere baap ki kasam kisi aur se bhi nahi hoga ." If this doesn't cause a lot of screaming and whistling, then all the writers should retire at once.

publive-image

Bhuvam Gowda captures those pan frames well with his camera, and the visual effects are also impressive. This is an out-and-out action film, so there is less scope for the music, but the theme song Sultan  is damn engaging. It will keep you hooked with the visuals and mass elevation while the composition is nothing less than an anthem, let's say the KGF Anthem . The other two songs are skippable.

publive-image

What KGF Chapter 2 lacks is the class and standard of logical filmmaking. That appears in the writing part too. Okay, Rocky Bhai is the biggest criminal in India, but how can he easily walk into the prime minister's office and still walk out without a single hand on his shoulder? That's how we should treat the most wanted criminal, right? He can even enter Parliament House during the speaking hours as if there was no security for the ministers of the country. Well, he can get shot in the chest and the shooter can still be confident that he will survive.

publive-image

By the way, what was Srinidhi Shetty's character like? If I remember correctly, Rocky falls in love with her just after one fight scene in Chapter 1 , and as we saw in the climax, she even started liking him for that. However, in this film, she is both hesitant and angry about him kidnapping her. Why? Nobody knows. But she is happy being a mistress for years, only to fall in love with him just after knowing his mother's story. Wow, what a woman! KGF 2 continues by locking many illogical scenes inside a room, and the key to hiding is an out-and-out action adventure. That's how KGF 2 survives, just like RRR did a couple of weeks back.

publive-image

Director Prashanth Neel has had it in his vision even before Chapter 1 was released, and he makes sure that KGF friends get what they have been waiting for. He provides them with a blockbuster mass mania that every KGF fan will enjoy. KFG 2 is so loud that the majority of the audience will need to see an ear specialist after the show, but tell me, haven't all those KGF fans experienced the same thing in 2018? For them, it's okay. For others, it might cause ear pain. Neel could have removed that, but I guess he used it as a USP as he knew the same thing made his film different from other mass action films.

publive-image

In a nutshell, KGF Chapter 2 brings back the swag of Rocky Bhai after 3.5 years, and he, along with Adheera , explodes in the dark Kolar fields. This one is a must-see for the fans, while others can try it for a good weekend watch too. With this kind of hype and craze, KGF 2 is sure to cause a riot at the box office. Perhaps the second biggest after Baahubali 2 , especially in the Hindi belt. Hold your breath and save your loud cheers for the theaters.

KGF: Chapter 2 movie review — Prashanth Neel, Yash hit it out of the park with this testosterone-filled sequel

KGF Chapter 2 is far better than KGF 1 writing-wise, and the ideation is way better too

KGF: Chapter 2 movie review — Prashanth Neel, Yash hit it out of the park with this testosterone-filled sequel

Language: Kannada

On December 21, 2018, a Friday, I watched Prashanth Neel ’s Yash-starrer KGF in a Mangaluru theatre, and remember not being very charmed by the dialogues. Which means, I HEARD them. I can’t say the same about KGF2 nearly four years later — I hardly heard a single dialogue amid the hooting audience and relied on the subtitles. That’s how much KGF has grown as a franchise. And, my eardrums are still buzzing after the last scene — the one that promises, yes, yes Chapter 3.

One can’t really write a review of Hombale Films ’ KGF2 without factoring in this kind of home-grown organic popularity. It dulls any sharp edges and makes you understand why the film has charmed the way it has, and why Kannada films will always be known as the era before and after KGF . For, Prashanth does not create an ideal world, but stays very true to the imperfect world he has come up with.

In KGF2 , Prashanth takes off from where he left the last time — Garuda has been vanquished in Narachi and Raja Krishnappa Bairya aka Rocky (Yash) has taken over the gold mines. He’s your benevolent dictator, who removes people from the shackles of bonded labour and keeps work going in the gold mines. And then, Adheera ( Sanjay Dutt ), an old foe, returns. The rest of the film is a series of set pieces where Rocky keeps tackling foes, including the country’s prime minister Ramika Sen (Raveena Tandon looking majestic and stern all the time). Rocky is still guided by his mother Shantamma’s (Archana Jois) words. This time, he also receives copious blessings from the other women, including a pious Muslim mother played by Eswari Rao. He crosses paths with a CBI official played by Rao Ramesh, and eventually, things come to a head. You think it’s all over, but then Prashanth being Prashanth, he leaves you guessing.

The star of the film continues to be the monotone-filled violent world of Narachi, and its happenings. Ultimately, everything begins and ends there. Art director Shivakumar J achieves something wonderful with the film — he suspends it in a semi-mythical zone, yet leaves it rooted too. Composer Ravi Basrur leaves a mark with his rousing score.

This film is again all testosterone, and women continue to have just cameo roles. I’d have been happier had they done away with the women altogether, barring the mother, because they only serve the purpose of either egging Rocky on, or telling him how great he is. Even with Ramika, you don’t really know what drives her — love for the country or the power high of being a dictator?

Time has passed, but Rocky still does not understand consent. Reena Desai (Srinidhi Shetty does not really have much to do, and ultimately serves as collateral damage) is dragged in, kicking and screaming, to his den, because hey, the don wants “entertainment”. She congratulates him at one stage, because she loves him, and pretty soon realises that a hug from her calms him down. A scheming, thinking don needs calming down, sure.

But, the strange thing is, while all of this would have stuck out like a sore thumb in any other film, in the KGF universe, these exaggerated emotions and the rain of bullets and the Kalashnikovs and the big cars and the mansions and the black dust of the mines — fit it perfectly.

Prashanth seems to have perfected the art of keeping something coming at you constantly, and making a film work beautifully on the big screen. There’s a scene featuring drying papads that landed so well. I felt like eating popcorn in a theatre for the first time, post-pandemic. This is that kind of film — that reminds you why you want the big screen, reminds you why popcorn is the perfect accompaniment for a good commercial flick. This is one director we all need to watch out for — he’s just on his third film and already has some signature motifs.

It helps that Bhuvan Gowda’s camera work manages to give you the sense of awe that Prashanth wants you to experience when you see Narachi and KGF and the power brokers who are at work here.

Yash is all swag and sophistication, look-wise, and the desi English quirk stays with him in this film too. Is that why Rocky appeals to the regular viewer? Possibly, because he is one of them.

Yes, Rocky and his mannerisms and the swish of his hair will become meme magic. He also gets to speak a lot more in this film. But, ultimately, you do wonder — what is Rocky’s role in the scheme of the universe?

What really drives him? Money? Love? People’s emancipation? Or just power?

This time around, the narrator of the film is not journalist Anand (we see bits of his backstory too), but his son (a superb Prakash Raj doing things he effortlessly does). The film, as always, straddles the grey zone — because ultimately, the film is centered around someone who openly calls himself a criminal, and whom others call a monster.

What I liked most about KGF2 is that there is no happily ever after, both in the personal and professional space. Rocky owes his people something and he does things for them too, but there’s something else that drives him, other than his mother’s desire to see him do well. At heart, he remains a loner, and is a one-man lean, mean fighting machine.

One character puts it best — “He’s doing all this because someone told him to. Who will now tell him to stop?”

The film is set in Karnataka from the 50s to the 80s, a time when it was a more tolerant place, and where inter-religious conversations were easier. A hat tip to Prashanth for not shying away from showcasing love and affection between people. But then you also wonder why there was a line about democracy not working and it being pointless.

Writing wise, KGF2 is far better than KGF1 , and the ideation is way better too. Now, one can only wait for Chapter 3 to find out what happened in the inky blue depth of the Indian Ocean speckled with gold bars.

Rating: 4/5
