Ph.D. Funding: Humanities & Social Sciences

Princeton’s full-funding guarantee ensures total support for all Ph.D. students throughout regular program enrollment. This includes tuition and stipend support from fellowships, assistantships, and external sources. Visit our Financial Support Model page for information about tuition & costs.

Fellowships

Fellowships are the primary source of funding in Princeton’s financial support model for degree candidates in the humanities and social sciences. All students during their regular enrollment period are covered fully via a University Fellowship, unless they hold alternate sources of funding. Additional fellowships are also offered by the Graduate School and campus partners, some of which offer a higher stipend rate. Premium-rate honorific fellowships are awarded to select later-stage Ph.D. students whose research shows exceptional promise.

Explore Princeton Fellowships

Assistantships & External Fellowships

Additional funding comes in many forms, including assistantships and external fellowships.

Most Ph.D. programs require teaching during regular enrollment, often in specific years of study. AIs include a tuition and stipend component, the latter of which is higher than the base University Fellowship. Support from an AI replaces, in full or in part, any funding provided from the University. Partial appointments are prorated according to the percentage AI assigned. Students may also be offered Assistantships in Research (ARs).

In addition to fellowships sponsored by the Graduate School and campus partners , many students land competitive national and international fellowships from external sources , including from the U.S. Fulbright Program, the Ford Foundation, and others.

Dissertation Completion Funding

If the degree is not completed within a department's normal timeframe, up to two additional years of dissertation completion enrollment (DCE) may be available. In general, DCE students are not guaranteed support. However, it is provided in certain circumstances and supplemental funding can be found from a variety of sources. The Office of the Dean of the Graduate School offers a sixth-year-funding program to select Ph.D. students in the humanities and social sciences. Visit our Dissertation Completion Funding section for details.

The goals of the University of Michigan School of Social Work’s PhD in Social Work and Social Welfare are to:

  • Prepare the future social work professoriate with a specific focus in the solution of social problems through rigorous scientific methodological and integrative, transdisciplinary social science inquiry.
  • To prepare leaders of the social work profession with expertise in social policy and social intervention that is based in rigorous scientific methods and theoretical and empirical inquiry.

The PhD program in Social Work and Social Welfare is focused on developing scholars who are transdisciplinary experts (i.e., masters of a broad array of applicable methods not in a specific to a social science but drawing from an array of disciplines) with the education and training to understand, develop, and evaluate social interventions, including service systems and policies.  The PhD Program in Social Work and Social Welfare applies appropriate transdisciplinary perspectives to focus specifically on problems at the heart of social work: to promote human adaptation, social change, and social justice. The distinctive elements of the PhD program in Social Work and Social Welfare are its transdisciplinary perspective and its greater emphasis on the science of multi-level individual and social change and social justice in a diverse and pluralistic societal context.

The PhD program in Social work and Social Welfare trains students to be able to create and evaluate interventions designed to solve societal problems. As social work is an applied profession, the PhD program in Social Work and Social Welfare prepares students to discover new methods for helping people and society overcome the problems they face. Coursework aligns with this focus and the preliminary examination required for candidacy asks students to synthesize research on practice interventions in their area of research, critique it, identify gaps, and make suggestions on addressing these gaps.

Beginning in Fall 2024, the program will admit five (5) Social Work and Social Welfare PhD students to start in the Fall of 2025.

Please note that applicants can apply to both the doctoral program in Social Work and Social Welfare and the SSW Joint Doctoral program in Social Work and Social Science but must complete specific applications for each program. Students are encouraged to thoroughly review materials about both PhD program options to ensure alignment between the program(s) and their research interests and scholarly goals.

Economic & Social Research Council Studentships

The KISS DTC has now been replaced with the London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (LISS-DTP), made up of KCL, Queen Mary University of London and Imperial College.

LISS-DTP will now award ESRC -funded postgraduate research studentships to support doctoral research and training in the social sciences across this partnership. These are available for three or four years full-time, either as a three year PhD (‘+3’) or as a one-year Masters followed by PhD (‘1+3’). Therefore, a masters degree is not a prerequisite for applying for a LISS-DTP studentship.

A range of training programmes are available based on an assessment of the applicant’s prior learning and training needs and each LISS-DTP Thematic Pathway has a variety of Masters programmes associated with it.

Please see the LISS DTP website for details on the Thematic Pathways for more information.

Part-time studentships are also possible at pro-rata rates.

ESRC Open Competition Studentships

The Open Competition enables students to propose their own research project for funding. The Open Competition opens each November with an application deadline at the end of January. Applicants are notified in April about whether or not they have been awarded a studentship commencing in October.

Studentships are offered as either +3 (PhD only) or 1+3 (Masters and PhD). You will need to identify a supervisor who will write a supporting statement for your application.

Visit our studentships page or our dedicated LISS-DTP website for more information.

Please send general enquiries to: [email protected]

ESRC CASE Competition Collaborative Studentships

LISS DTP’s CASE Collaborative studentship competitions promote partnerships between social scientists at King’s College London, Queen Mary University of London and Imperial College and end-user organisations (public or private or third sector ‘partner institutions’).

A collaborative studentship (referred to as a CASE studentship) is one in which the student enhances their training by working closely with the non-academic partner in the development of their research project. They are a great way to initiate longer-term partnerships and to ensure the ‘impact’ of doctoral research.

It is important to note that the academic faculty initially apply for collaborative studentships, as potential supervisors. If successful they may award the studentship either to a named student or through an agreed recruitment process.

The studentship can involve any public or private or third sector partner institution. The involvement of the partner institution should add value to the studentship (e.g. distinctive opportunities for analysis, dissemination, research management, networking and/or knowledge transfer). The PhD project should also enhance the partner institution’s activities by offering the potential for societal or economic impact.

For more information, please visit the studentships page on the LISS-DTP website .

Fellowships: Innovating new policy solutions

To innovate new policy solutions, researchers need unrestricted funding that gives them the freedom to pursue novel ideas.

Recent research indicates that unrestricted fellowships funding “people, not projects” are more likely to accelerate scientific innovation, relative to restricted research grants. For example, recipients of fellowships awarded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, which “tolerates early failure, rewards long-term success, and gives its appointees great freedom to experiment,” are 96 percent more likely to produce breakthrough research, relative to grantees of the National Institutes of Health, who are “subject to short review cycles, predefined deliverables, and renewal policies unforgiving of failure” ( Azoulay et al 2011 ). Observers have called for increased use of unrestricted fellowships to increase “research autonomy and risk taking” in science ( Cowen and Collison 2019 ).

The Social Science Research Council works with funding partners to design and administer fellowship programs that foster the innovation of new policy solutions to meet our most pressing needs.

In the meantime, though, there’s the problem of paying for school . A college degree is expensive and not all social science majors can count on a large salary immediately after graduation , especially if they find themselves drawn to non-profit work or academia. There are a variety of financial aid sources available to social science students, however. General interest scholarships, such as essay scholarships , can be good choices for social science majors, since analysis and persuasive writing are likely to be among your strong suits.

Finding Specific Social Science Scholarships

Since social science is such a broad subject area, a wide range of social science scholarship opportunities fall under its umbrella, including scholarships for sociology, anthropology, political science, economics, social work, communication studies and humanities-based majors like history , linguistics and cultural studies. Major-specific scholarships are available for a variety of disciplines within the social sciences. You can check with your department and your school’s financial aid office for some social science scholarship opportunities for students in your particular major as well as contacting the Social Science Research Council for grants and fellowships . You can also conduct a free college scholarship search at Scholarships.com to find not only social science scholarships, but scholarships based on your other unique characteristics.

Helen Zahos thought she was poor until a school social experiment revealed she was 'well off'

Helen smiles and wears bright blue scrubs while standing in the hallway of a hospital.

It's Pay Day! The ABC's new column where we ask Australians from different walks of life the money questions we don't like to talk about. We aim to demystify personal finance and normalise conversations about what we earn and how we save it — or spend it.

Helen Zahos is a humanitarian and emergency nurse and paramedic who's volunteered in disaster areas around the world, including Iraq's IDP Camps, in Nepal after the earthquake and the Philippines following the typhoon. She has also volunteered in Ukraine and earlier this year spent three months in Kenya.

Helen grew up on Groote Eylandt, a remote Island in the Northern Territory, and completed her nursing and paramedic studies in Darwin. She's now returning to student life, and recently moved to Melbourne to study a PhD at the Monash University Accident Research Centre.

For Pay Day, Helen talks about how volunteering overseas has changed her perspective on her own finances and how, over time, she's learned how not to get caught up comparing herself to others.

How would you describe your financial situation right now?

I'm tempted to say that it's not great. However, with all the humanitarian work I've done around the world, I'm very aware of the privilege that I have. I've recently become a student again, which will have its challenges financially. I have been awarded a scholarship which is fantastic, but my income has dramatically decreased.

How was money spoken about in your house growing up?

Growing up, money was a taboo subject — even now being asked these questions, I initially felt quite uncomfortable.

My parents came from very humble beginnings: a poor village in Greece where tobacco farming was the main source of income. I was reminded of that every time I went back to Greece and my parents would make me go with my cousins to pick tobacco at 3:30am, before they went to school. My father wanted me to experience hardship and show me what my life could have looked like.

Helen sits on a large block of cement near a pile of sandbags.

Living on Groote Eylandt, coming from Greek migrant parents, I honestly didn't know what kind of financial status we had. I always thought we were poor — other families drove fancier cars or lived in bigger houses.

That was until a social experiment at school where we were asked to line up according to what jobs our parents had, what cars they drove, what trips you went on.

I realised I was standing among the kids I thought were well off. When I spoke to kids around me who didn't have lunch packed or clean clothes for school, that's when the penny really dropped. I never had to worry about those things; it was just a given. That is what privilege looks like.

What did you spend your first pay cheque on?

Actually, I didn't spend anything with my first pay cheque! I was 12 or 13 when I started working at a local corner store, while I was still living at home. But from my first pay to when I left home after I completed university, I would always hand my pay over to my mum who then made sure it went into a bank account. By the time it was time for me to leave home at the end of uni [in the late 90s], I had a deposit to buy a house.

Helen smiles in a headshot photo.

About how much of your income goes towards your rent or mortgage each week?

I can't really give you an exact amount. I know that interest rates increased while I was away volunteering in Kenya, I think perhaps half of my pay goes towards my mortgage? It will be interesting to see what happens now with the change in my financial situation — I am bracing myself!

What has been your biggest financial disaster?

I was at a stage in my life where I was looking to try other ways of investing money other than property. It was when my father passed away and I was distracted and grieving that a close family friend of ours, who was working as a share broker, encouraged me to invest in shares through her business. She convinced not only me, but a number of other people to invest large sums of money with her.

Several months went by and I asked to withdraw my money as I was not working after my dad passed away. Suddenly our friend's behaviour changed; she stopped answering her phone, faked a cancer scare and other ailments, and then disappeared. It turned out she was running a Ponzi scheme. I had never even heard of the term.

She did get caught and went to jail, but I never saw that money again. I haven't thought about that incident for years. I know one thing, though: I could have really used that money right now, it would have made my life so much easier.

Cash or card?

It seems everything is card or phone or watch these days. I intentionally carry cash and try to use it when I can. In Kenya, we were completely cashless and used M-PESA [a mobile money service]. In Ukraine during the conflict, when power and internet were cut and ATMs were empty, cash was a must.

Helen stands in front of a civilian apartment building, with windows that have been scorched black by shelling.

I guess it's all relative to my surroundings, but I am definitely in favour of keeping cash circulating. I have seen what living is like if there is none available or accessible.

How many bank accounts do you have? How do you organise your money?

I have about three or four: one for my salary or money coming in, so I can keep track of it; one for investments so I know what is happening there; and one offset account linked to a home loan. I don't trust my spending so I make sure I only have a $1,000 limit on my credit card.

What are you saving for right now and how are you doing it?

Right now I'm just putting money away so that I can keep up with mortgage repayments with this new position at Monash University. I'm looking at a significant drop in pay and am navigating around that. I am literally two days [at time of writing] into that position and it's all new beginnings but I'm not saving for anything in particular — it's just about survival right now!

What's the biggest lie you tell yourself about money?

I think the biggest lie I tell myself is that I don't have enough or that I'm doing it hard, and that's actually not the case. I'm reminded of this when I'm in disaster areas or a humanitarian crisis, or even just walking down the street and seeing people sleeping on the streets and doing it tough. I'm actually in a good position right now and I'm doing OK but there are so many people out there who are not.

Helen wears a high-vis vest while talking to three other volunteers, standing amid ruined buildings and debris.

What's your biggest financial achievement?

I paid my first house off in my early 20s. I worked two to three jobs and my goal was to work as hard as I could to pay that house off. However, my goals then shifted from financial goals to personal goals. People are often surprised when they ask, "What are your goals or five-year plan?" and I respond with, "Write a book or do a PhD". For many years the focus of my long-term goals has not been financial.

If you could tell 18-year-old you one thing about money, what would it be?

Negotiate with the banks on your mortgage interest rates frequently. Otherwise, 18-year-old me did a pretty good job under the guidance of my parents and following their advice.

I would say though, don't get caught up in what other people around you have and stop comparing yourself to others. Richness comes in many different forms; mine has been in travel and having the privilege to meet some amazing people when they are at their most vulnerable through my volunteer work.

The Graduate Studies Office administers a DCU Postgraduate Research Conference and Travel Grant . Each postgraduate research student, full-time or part-time, can apply in the period of his or her studentship for a Conference and Travel Grant from the DCU Research Committee. The scheme is administered through the Graduate Studies Office (GSO), based in GLA.LG13 in the McNulty Building, Glasnevin Campus. Further information is available at the Graduate Studies Office scholarships page .

The Faculty Research Committee allocates some funds to administer a competitive Journal Publication Scheme , a call for which is issued normally at the end of October or beginning of November.  The scheme is available to research students in their 3rd or later year in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, DCU.  The scheme provides support for research leading to publication in a SCOPUS-ranked journal. The article can be sole-authored by the student or co-authored with a member of DCU staff, most typically but not exclusively a student’s supervisor.  Items supported could include fieldwork; archive / research travel; conference dissemination; data generation.  Depending on the budget allocation and number of applicants the maximum value of any single award can change but generally it will be no more than €1,000.

For a list of the nearly 10,000 Scopus-ranked journals in arts, humanities and social sciences and their ranking in each discipline, see this open access website .

The Irish Research Council (IRC) normally runs a competitive scheme annually for PhD scholarships. If you are interested in applying to this scheme, you should first contact a prospective supervisor in the relevant School. Existing PhD students should discuss applications with their supervisor. For further information on this scheme, see: IRC Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme .

IRC Applications

All research students in receipt of a faculty or school funded scholarship must apply to the Irish Research Council’s Postgraduate Research scheme. The Associate Dean for Research facilitates a workshop for applicants to this scheme in October each year.  If applicants are successful in securing an award from the IRC the following information is relevant:

  • Students receive confirmation directly from the IRC re award and contract.
  • Research funds are managed by the student and supervisor in line with IRC contract.
  • The student's Supervisor receives an email from DCU Finance Office detailing the Project subcost.
  • This new subcost is set up specifically to manage your award and the Supervisor needs to complete the 'hierarchy' setup to enable transactions.
  • The associated scholarship stipend is processed via Faculty office and GSO.
  • Funds can be drawn down by purchasing materials through the Purchase order process (funds taken directly from subcost) or reclaiming expenses using the NIER process or the  Core system (if you have access).  Your Supervisor is the approver of your expenses and all expenditure must be approved prior to purchase.

Claiming Expenses

Students in receipt of a scholarship from the IRC or schools may be entitled to claim expenses depending on the terms and conditions of your contract or scholarship letter e.g. IRP or visa costs, equipment. To claim your expenses you must complete a Non Invoice Expenditure Requisition Form available via your School Assistant.  Authorisation of the expenditure is the responsibility of your Supervisor (IRC costs),  the Head of School (IRP or visa costs), or Faculty Research Administrator (faculty granted research awards) depending on the expense and the account being charged.  If you are unsure, your School Assistant will advise you. Return the completed form along with original receipts to your School Assistant.

Purchase order process (IRC Awardees only)

If you want to purchase items such as software, laptops etc. you can do so by using the University's financial system, Agresso.  The supplier e.g. Dell, may already be set up as a supplier on this system so all you need to do is send the following details to the School Assistant:

  • what you want to purchase,
  • who you want to purchase from,
  • the cost ex. VAT,
  • the VAT rate
  • your IRC subcost to charge the expense to.

This will generate a purchase order (PO) which you can send to the supplier.  The supplier should quote this PO number on their invoice which they send directly to [email protected] . When the invoice is approved by the Faculty Office, payment is issued within the next week.
