Adele Now: Singer Postpones Concert Dates Because of Illness

Doctors have told “Easy on Me” singer Adele to take it easy on her voice. The singer announced February 27 she had postponed all scheduled shows of her Las Vegas residency at Caesars Palace through March. The 35-year-old says she is continuing to recover from an unspecified illness that has lingered since her last leg of performances.

“I hadn’t quite gotten the chance to get back to full health before the shows resumed and now I’m sick again, and unfortunately it’s all taken a toll on my voice,” she wrote on Instagram . “I love you. I’ll miss you like mad and I’m sorry for the inconvenience.”

Dates for residency shows in May and June are still listed on ticketing platforms like Ticketmaster . Adele is also scheduled to play in Europe for the first time in eight years this summer, with 10 shows booked in Germany in August.

Who Is Adele?

British singer-songwriter Adele has sold millions of albums worldwide and is known for the songs “Rolling in the Deep,” “Someone Like You,” and “Hello.” Months after graduating a performing arts school near London, the young talent signed a record deal at age 18. On the heels of her 2008 debut album, 19 , Adele picked up the 2009 Grammy for Best New Artist. Her subsequent albums have been massive commercial hits, including the most recent release 30 from November 2021. To date, the musical powerhouse has 16 Grammys and one Oscar and is the first artist in Grammy history to sweep the top three categories—Album, Song, and Record of the Year—twice. Currently, Adele is performing a Las Vegas residency that began in November 2022.

FULL NAME: Adele Laurie Blue Adkins BORN: May 5, 1988 BIRTHPLACE: London, England SPOUSE: Simon Konecki (2018-2021) CHILDREN: Angelo ASTROLOGICAL SIGN: Taurus

Adele Laurie Blue Adkins was born on May 5, 1988, in north London, England. She is the only child of Penny Adkins, an “arty mom” who was just 18 at the time of her birth, and a Welsh father, Mark Evans, who left the family when Adele was 4 years old.

Evans remained in contact with his daughter up until her teen years, when his problems with alcohol and increasing estrangement from his daughter caused their relationship to deteriorate. By contrast, Adele grew close to her mom, who encouraged her young daughter “to explore, and not to stick with one thing.”

Early on, Adele developed a passion for music. She gravitated toward the songs of Lauryn Hill , Mary J. Blige , and Destiny’s Child. But her true, eye-opening moment came when she was 15, and she happened upon a collection of Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald records at a local shop.

“There was no musical heritage in our family,” Adele told The Telegraph in a 2008 interview. “Chart music was all I ever knew. So when I listened to the Ettas and the Ellas, it sounds so cheesy, but it was like an awakening. I was like, oh, right, some people have proper longevity and are legends. I was so inspired that as a 15-year-old I was listening to music that had been made in the ’40s.”

While clearly bright, Adele wasn’t oriented towards traditional classroom settings. Instead, her mother enrolled her in the Brit School for Creative & Performing Arts, which counts actor Tom Holland and late singer Amy Winehouse as alumni. While at school, Adele cut a three-track demo for a class project that was eventually posted on her MySpace page. When executives at XL Recordings heard the tracks, they contacted the singer and in November 2006, just four months after Adele had graduated school, signed the 18-year-old to a record deal.

Years into her career, the singer reconciled with her father in early 2021 as he battled a recurrence of cancer. She told Rolling Stone the two had an honest conversation about their relationship, and Adele even played songs off her upcoming album for him. Evans died that May. “I don’t think I understood the true deepness of how I felt about my dad until we spoke,” she said. “It was like I let out one wail and something left [at his death]. I’ve felt so calm ever since then. It really did set little me free.”

Adele has released four albums to date, starting with 2008’s 19 . Her albums are named for the ages when she began each recording project. Both 21 and 25 were awarded Album of the Year at the Grammys.

Adele’s albums, in order, are:

Adele’s debut album went on sale in early 2008. Led by two popular lead singles, “Hometown Glory” and “Chasing Pavements,” the record rocketed Adele to fame. Released in the United States through Columbia Records, 19 resonated with American audiences, much as it had with British music fans.

Adele cemented her commercial success with an appearance in October 2008 on Saturday Night Live . At the taping of the show, the album was ranked No. 40 on iTunes. Less than 24 hours later, it was No. 1.

Adele’s much-anticipated follow-up album, 21 , didn’t disappoint upon its release in early 2011. Tapping even deeper into Adele’s appreciation for classic American R&B and jazz, the album was a monster hit, selling 352,000 copies within its first week.

Anchored by hits like “Rolling in the Deep” and “Someone Like You,” 21 placed Adele in rarified air. In February 2011, she found herself with two Top 5 singles and a pair of Top 5 albums in the same week, becoming the only artist besides the Beatles and 50 Cent to achieve that milestone. And with 21 staying at No. 1 for 11 weeks, Adele also broke the solo female artist record previously held by Madonna ’s Immaculate Collection for consecutive weeks atop the album charts. The album went on to sell more than 30 million copies worldwide.

In October 2015, Adele announced the forthcoming November release her third album, 25 . She posted 25 ’s cover on Instagram, and said of her first full-length studio project in several years: “My last record was a break-up record, and if I had to label this one, I would call it a make-up record. Making up for lost time. Making up for everything I ever did and never did. 25 is about getting to know who I’ve become without realizing. And I’m sorry it took so long but, you know, life happened.”

The album is a collection of emotional, sometimes plaintive songs looking at the ins and outs of relationships, owing much of its sound to traditional pop craft. Like its predecessors, 25 became an international smash hit, reaching No. 1 on iTunes in 110 countries. In the United States, the album sold 3.38 million copies in seven days, beating the *NSYNC record of 2.42 million album copies sold in a week. Among other feats, 25 is also the only album to reach a million copies sold in the United States in 10 days.

In November 2021, Adele released 30 , her first studio album in six years. Its lead single “Easy on Me” became a No. 1 hit in the United States.

In an interview with Rolling Stone , the singer revealed she had started work on the album in 2019 and had completed writing it by early next year. The singer has said the project was influenced by her divorce with ex-husband Simon Konecki, and she completed it largely so her young son, Angelo, could one day have a better understanding of her life.

Critics praised the album for its musical composition and personal subject matter. It was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 2023, including Album of the Year, ultimately falling short to Harry’s House by Harry Styles .

The first of Adele’s songs to chart in the United Kingdom and the United States was “Chasing Pavements,” the lead single from her debut album. The singer says she wrote the song after an argument with her then-boyfriend in a London club. “It was six in the morning. There was no one chasing me, I wasn’t chasing anyone. I was just running away. I remember saying to myself, ‘What you’re chasing is you’re chasing an empty pavement,’” she said. In the United Kingdom, it first appeared on the Official Singles Chart in January 2008 and peaked at No. 2. It rose as high as No. 21 on America’s Billboard Hot 100 in February 2009.

Since then, Adele has captured three No. 1 U.K. hits—“Someone Like You,” “Hello,” and “Easy On Me”— and five U.S. chart-toppers. Her No. 1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 are:

  • “Rolling in the Deep”
  • “Someone Like You”
  • “Set Fire to the Rain”
  • “Easy On Me”

Adele drew inspiration for many of these ballads from her love life. She wrote “Rolling in the Deep,” her first No. 1 Billboard single from May 2011, the day after breaking up with her “first real relationship” that she later said “made me an adult.” Similarly, “Someone Like You” was crafted to help her get over a breakup—reportedly with Alex Sturrock, a 31-year-old photographer. However, not all these songs follow that mold. The British singer explained during a live show she got inspiration for “Set Fire to the Rain” when her lighter stopped working in the rain.

“Hello” stands out for its accompanying visual clip and historic popularity. Directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Xavier Dolan, it reportedly became the first music video to be shot with IMAX cameras. The song was also the first single to received more than 1 million downloads in a week’s time.

In total, Adele has had 19 songs in the U.K. Top 75 and 25 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, including eight Top 10 hits.

Adele has won 16 Grammys out of 25 total nominations. Her most recent win was her fourth Best Solo Pop Performance trophy for “Easy on Me” in 2023.

She collected her first two Grammys at the 2009 ceremony when she took home Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Chasing Pavements.” In 2012, Adele swept the Grammy Awards; three of her six wins that night were for the top honors of Song of the Year and Record of the Year for “Rolling in the Deep,” as well as Album of the Year for 21 . “This record is inspired by something that is really normal and everyone’s been through it—just a rubbish relationship,” she said at the ceremony.

In 2017, Adele became the first artist in Grammy history to sweep the top three categories twice. “Hello” won Song and Record of the Year as 25 nabbed Album of the Year. Adele additionally earned Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album, bringing her total for the year to five Grammys. However, she was effusive in her praise to fellow Album of the Year nominee Beyoncé and her groundbreaking album Lemonade. “But my artist of my life is Beyoncé, and this album for me, the Lemonade album, was just so monumental,” Adele said in her acceptance speech .

Her song “Skyfall,” the theme song for the 2012 James Bond movie of the same name, collected the 2014 Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media after winning an Academy Award and Golden Globe the year prior.

Beyond the Grammys, Adele has a host of other accolades. Her first album 19 earned the singer the distinction of being named the “Sound of 2008” by the BBC. That same year, she earned the Critics’ Choice prize at the BRIT Awards. In 2022, the singer took a step closer to EGOT status . Adele: One Night Only , a two-hour televised concert at Los Angeles’ Griffiths Observatory and an interview with Oprah Winfrey , earned the musical powerhouse the Emmy for Outstanding Prerecorded Variety Special. During the concert, Adele helped orchestrate a successful surprise marriage proposal between two fans.

Adele has dated singer and sports agent Rich Paul since 2021. Paul is the founder of Klutch Sports Group, the agency that represents basketball superstar LeBron James and a number of other high-profile NBA players. The couple made their first public appearance together at an NBA Finals game in July 2021, before sources revealed they had in fact been together for months.

In September 2023, speculation began that Adele and Paul had married after the singer referred to him as “my husband” amid an interaction with fans at one of her concerts. The following month, Paul gave an interview to CBS Mornings in which he said of their relationship: “She’s superb. We’ve been great for each other.” However, he didn’t confirm or deny the marriage rumors.

Adele shares a son with her ex-husband Simon Konecki. The couple were in a years-long relationship starting in late 2011. Konecki is the founder of Life water and the charity Drop4Drop.

On June 29, 2012, Adele announced on her website that she was pregnant with the couple’s first child. She spoke to People magazine about being a mother: “I really want to be a mum. I better start getting on with it!” she said. She gave birth to their son, Angelo, on October 19, 2012.

In early 2017, Adele was spotted wearing a wedding band, sparking marriage rumors. At her Grammy acceptance speech that same year, Adele appeared to confirm the rumors by calling Konecki her husband, though in interviews backstage she referred to him as her “partner.” Divorce proceedings between the pair eventually cited May 2018 as their marriage date. In April 2019, the singer’s representatives revealed that Adele and Konecki had split. Their divorce was finalized two years later.

Adele and Konecki continue to coparent Angelo, who is now a preteen.

Adele made significant changes to her diet and exercise routines, including lifting weights and doing circuit training , and made headlines in 2019 and 2020 with photos showing off her new physique. The singer lost around 100 pounds and even joked about her transformation during an October 2020 appearance as host of Saturday Night Live . “But actually, because of all the COVID restrictions… I had to travel light and I could only bring half of me, and this is the half I chose,” she said.

According to the singer, the workouts also eased the anxiety she had experienced amid her divorce. “Working out, I would just feel better... it was never about losing weight, it was always about becoming strong and giving myself as much time every day without my phone. I got quite addicted to it,” she told British Vogue .

According to Celebrity Net Worth , Adele’s total fortune is estimated around $220 million as of January 2024.

  • I’ve seen people where it rules their lives, you know, who want to be thinner or have bigger boobs, and how it wears them down, and I just don’t want that in my life.
  • I don’t write songs about a specific, elusive thing. I write about love, and everyone knows what it is like to have your heart broken.
  • I doubt I’ll be singing forever, because at some point people aren’t going to want to hear my music, and I hope that I’ll still get the opportunity to write songs.
  • I’m a big personality. I walk into a room, big and tall and loud.
  • I have never been insecure, ever, about how I look, about what I want to do with myself. My mum told me to only ever do things for myself, not for others.
  • I have sympathy for myself, I have sympathy for [my audience], they have sympathy for me, and I know that we are all there knowing exactly how each other feels.
  • I want to go and see things as a fan again. I am a fan, but I can’t remember what it feels like to be a fan anymore. Because I’ve become an artist. I’ve become the artist.
  • [ Etta James ] was the first time a voice made me stop what I was doing and sit down and listen. It took over my mind and body.
  • I don’t make music for eyes. I make music for ears.
  • I’ve never been more normal than I am now.
  • If something is only all right, I make it into a bad thing. I won’t if it’s really good.
  • I like having my hair and face done, but I’m not going to lose weight because someone tells me to. I make music to be a musician, not to be on the cover of Playboy .

Recent News

Adele (born May 5, 1988, Tottenham, London, England) is an English pop singer and songwriter whose soulful emotive voice and traditionally crafted songs made her one of the most broadly popular performers of her generation.

Adkins was raised by a young single mother in various working-class neighbourhoods of London. As a child, she enjoyed singing contemporary pop music and learned to play the guitar and the clarinet. However, it was not until her early teens, when she discovered rhythm-and-blues singer Etta James and other mid-20th-century performers, that she began to consider a musical career. While she honed her talents at a government-funded secondary school for the performing arts, a friend began posting songs Adkins had written and recorded onto the social networking Web site Myspace . Her music eventually caught the attention of record labels, and in 2006, several months after graduating, she signed a contract with XL Recordings.

After building anticipation in Britain with some well-received live performances, Adele (as she now billed herself) released her first album, 19 , in 2008. (The title referred to the age at which she penned most of the tracks.) The recording debuted at number one on the British album chart, and critics praised Adele’s supple phrasing, her tasteful arrangements, and her ability to channel her intimate emotional experiences (especially with heartbreak) into songs that had wide resonance . She also earned comparisons to Amy Winehouse , another young British singer conspicuously influenced by soul music . (For many fans, however, Adele’s zaftig figure and down-to-earth persona made her the more-relatable star.) A performance on the television program Saturday Night Live helped introduce Adele to American audiences, and in early 2009 she won Grammy Awards for best new artist and best female pop vocal performance (for the lush bluesy song “ Chasing Pavements”).

For her next album, Adele enlisted a number of songwriters and producers, including Rick Rubin , to collaborate with her. The result, 21 (2011), was a bolder and more stylistically diverse set of material, with singles ranging from the earthy gospel - and disco -inflected “ Rolling in the Deep” to the affecting breakup ballad “ Someone like You.” Both songs hit number one in multiple countries, and, despite a vocal-cord ailment that forced Adele to cancel numerous tour dates in 2011, the album became the biggest-selling release of the year in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Additionally, with worldwide sales of more than 20 million copies by mid-2012, it was credited with helping revive the flagging recording industry.

Following successful throat surgery, Adele performed at the 2012 Grammy Awards ceremony. She also collected six Grammy trophies, including those for album, record, and song of the year (the latter two honoured “Rolling in the Deep”). Days later she received two Brit Awards (the British equivalent of the Grammys). The sales spike for 21 after both events further confirmed the singer’s emergence as a commercial juggernaut . In 2013 Adele won the Grammy for best pop solo performance for “Set Fire to the Rain,” from her concert album Live at the Royal Albert Hall (2011), and she picked up an Academy Award for the brassy theme song she provided for the blockbuster James Bond movie Skyfall (2012). Later that year she was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Adele returned in 2015 with the album 25 . Although some critics felt it did not take enough risks, Adele’s voice was no less powerful, and her ability to sell records remained undiminished. The yearning single “ Hello” became a hit in numerous countries, and more than 20 million copies of the album were sold worldwide. In addition, 25 earned Adele five more Grammys, including another sweep of the top categories (album, song, and record of the year). In 2021 the singer released her fourth studio album, 30 . The emotionally candid work—many of the songs deal with her divorce and its aftermath—was widely acclaimed, and the single “Easy on Me” won the Grammy for best pop solo performance.

The Story of How Adele Became Famous Will Make You Love Her Even More

biography of adele in english

On June 9, the United Kingdom's Official Charts Company announced a major milestone for their resident soul singer, Adele: Her sophomore album, 21 , is the best-selling U.K. record of the decade so far. That the record has earned such a distinct honor is not entirely surprising; after all, 21 spent an astonishing 23 weeks at No. 1 and to date has sold 4,751,000 copies in the U.K. That's especially amazing when you consider that the U.K. only has a population of 64 million — meaning that enough copies were sold that nearly 15% of the entire country could own the album.

In honor of this announcement, we look back at how Adele got her start, as well as the big ups and big downs that we have come to associate with the young musician's already legendary career.

biography of adele in english

Destined from birth:  Adele was born Adele Adkins in 1988 in north London to a working-class mother and an estranged father. It was her young mother, who was only 18 when Adele was born, who encouraged the soul singer to test her limits and explore her creative side. From four years old, Adele had been obsessed with emotive voices, especially those of singers like Mary J. Blige, Lauryn Hill and Alicia Keys. But her real musical "awakening" came when she discovered Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald records at a thrift store.

"There was no musical heritage in our family," Adele told the Telegraph . "Chart music was all I ever knew. So when I listened to the Ettas and the Ellas, it sounds so cheesy, but it was like an awakening. I was like, oh, right, some people have proper longevity and are legends. I was so inspired that as a 15-year-old I was listening to music that had been made in the Forties. The idea that people might look back to my music in 50 years' time was a real spur to doing this."

Adele left public school at 14 to attend the BRIT performing arts school, where musicians like Leona Lewis and Amy Winehouse also honed their crafts. During her time at the BRIT, Adele uploaded three demos to her MySpace page — among them her first song , "Hometown Glory" — that caught the attention of London record label, XL. At 18 years old, and just six months after her graduation, Adele signed to XL and began her career.

Instant fame:  In January 2008, Adele released her debut album, 19 , and shortly thereafter, she won the prestigious Brit Critic's Choice Award. 19 saw nearly instant success in the U.K., debuting at No. 1 and helping its single, "Chasing Pavements," reach No. 2. But it wasn't until Adele signed a deal with American label Columbia, in summer 2008, that the album gained real momentum in the states.

"I had no specific plans for my album," the self-deprecating singer  told Blues & Soul in 2008. "In fact, I STILL don't know exactly what kind of artist I want to be! You know, for me the album was just about making a record of songs to get a boy off my chest and include all the different kinds of music that I love."

In the fall of 2008, a series of serendipitous events helped Adele secure four Grammy nominations. She played on Saturday Night Live in October alongside host Sarah Palin, an episode that saw the show's highest ratings in 14 years. The Washington Post reported that within 24 hours of the  SNL episode's airing, Adele's debut album hit No. 1 on iTunes. Coincidentally, that was also when Grammy voting wrapped up, and by December, Adele had her first Grammy noms. She won two of those come February 2009, among them best new artist. And like that, she was firmly established as a powerful force in the industry.

Career in jeopardy:  After the massive success of her debut album, Adele was primed for a sophomore slump. But she was only just getting going. The wild success  of the record took her on a victory lap of North America, but Adele's prospects came to a screeching halt during the summer of 2011, when she was forced to cancel the remainder of her tour due to laryngitis . After recovering and returning to the tour, Adele was again forced to cancel  performances in the fall, after her vocal cord issues didn't clear up.

"Singing is literally my life," Adele said in a press release at the time, according to Rolling Stone . "It's my hobby, my love, my freedom and now my job. I have absolutely no choice but to recuperate properly and fully or I risk damaging my voice forever ... I will be back and I'm gonna smash the ball out of the park once I'm touring again."

In November 2011, the singer underwent vocal cord surgery, and Vogue wrote , "Has any pop star ever had a bigger year shackled to a bigger letdown?"

biography of adele in english

A return:  That sickness precipitated Adele's relative scarceness for years. But it did little to stall the influence of her sophomore effort — in February 2012, Adele won six Grammys for 21 , tying with Beyoncé for the most awards won in a single night. Like the cherry on a sundae, Adele was  named one of Time 's 100 Most Influential People of the year. Yet she hasn't released much new music of her own since, singing only the  James Bond  song, "Skyfall," which would  earn  her a tenth Grammy. Soon after, Adele gave birth to her first child. She's been on hiatus ever since, and has likely been  working on her third album, but neither a name nor release date have been revealed. Rumor has it that it will come this year.

At only 27, Adele has achieved a rare but well-deserved legendary status among young female pop stars. It seems guaranteed that Adele will be, like her idols Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald, one of those musicians who people look back on 50 years from now.

When executives at XL Recordings heard the tracks, they contacted the singer and, in November 2006, just four months after Adele had graduated school, signed her to a record deal. Adele has recorded a total of three studio albums since the beginning of her career in 2008: 19, 21 and 25. '19' (2008) Adele's debut album, 19, which is named for the singer's age when she began recording the project, went on sale in early 2008. Led by two popular lead singles, " Adele: Hometown Glory (2009) " and " Adele: Chasing Pavements (2008) " the record rocketed Adele to fame. Released in the United States through Columbia Records, 19 resonated with American audiences, much as it had with British music fans. Adele cemented her commercial success with an appearance in October 2008 on Saturday Night Live (2016) . At the taping of the show, the album was ranked No. 40 on iTunes. Less than 24 hours later, it was No. 1. '21' (2011) Adele's much anticipated follow-up album, 21, again named for her age at the time of recording, did not disappoint upon its release in early 2011. Tapping even deeper into Adele's appreciation for classic American R&B and jazz, the record was a monster hit, selling 352,000 copies within its first week. Anchored by hits like " Adele: Rolling in the Deep (2010) " and " Adele: Someone Like You (2011) " 21 placed Adele in rarified air. In February 2011, she found herself with two Top 5 singles and a pair of Top 5 albums in the same week, becoming the only artist besides The Beatles and 50 Cent to achieve that milestone. And with 21 staying at No. 1 for 11 weeks, Adele also broke the solo female artist record previously held by Madonna 's Immaculate Collection for consecutive weeks atop the album charts. 21 went on to sell more than 30 million copies worldwide. '25' (2015) On October 22, 2015, Adele announced that she would release her third album, 25, in November. She posted 25's cover on Instagram, and said of her first full-length studio project in several years: "My last record was a break-up record, and if I had to label this one, I would call it a make-up record. Making up for lost time. Making up for everything I ever did and never did. 25 is about getting to know who I've become without realizing. And I'm sorry it took so long but, you know, life happened." 25, released in November 2015, is a collection of emotional, sometimes plaintive songs looking at the ins and outs of relationships, owing much of its sound to traditional pop craft. The album went on to become an international smash hit, reaching No. 1 on iTunes in 110 countries. In the U.S., 25 sold 3.38 million copies in seven days, beating the 'NSync record of 2.42 million album copies sold in a week. Among other feats, 25 is also the only album to reach a million copies sold in the U.K. in 10 days. - IMDb Mini Biography By: Sam013024

Adele Is Music’s Past, Present and Future

adele-pop-music-star-returns-spotlight

O n a chilly November night, Adele takes the stage at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan for her first show in the U.S. in four years. It’s also the first stop on a stateside publicity tour to promote her new album, 25. After singing her No. 1 smash “Hello,” an orchestral ballad that aches with regret, she kicks off her shoes center stage and sighs. “How are you?” Adele asks the audience. “Are you all O.K.?” The crowd cheers. “I’m sorry,” she says. “I’ve got gas because I’m nervous.” Laughter erupts in the hall.

“I don’t think she even realizes how beloved she is,” the woman next to me says to her friend in a loud whisper. “She’s literally a national treasure.”

Judging by Adele’s commercial success, at least, this is less opinion than fact. Prognosticators anticipated that 25 might sell a million copies in its first week, an extraordinary figure in an anemic music industry that has seen physical record sales wither. Selling 2 million units would be miraculous. The last time that happened was in 2000, when ’N Sync’s blockbuster No Strings Attached sold 2.42 million copies—albeit long before streaming services obviated the need to buy albums. But by the first week’s end, Adele had sold 3.38 million copies of 25, making it the biggest sales week in history. Then sales passed another million the following week. Then another.

Adele can’t account for how she pulled off the seemingly impossible. Reclined on the floor of her hotel room a few days after the concert, she says she has “no idea” why she’s sold so many records. “It’s a bit ridiculous. I’m not even from America.” The 27-year-old sets down her cup of tea, brightening. “Maybe they think I’m related to the Queen. Americans are obsessed with the royal family.”

This is a little disingenuous, but only a little. Her last album, 21, was the best-selling record of 2011 and ’12, racking up a staggering 30 million copies worldwide. The lead single on 25, “Hello,” also shattered records: its music video was viewed at a rate of 1.6 million times per hour on YouTube. It stood to reason that she’d do good business. Still, Adele’s return to the spotlight is unlike anything the music industry has ever seen. Says Keith Caulfield, co-director of charts at Billboard, which tallies music sales: “She’s a unicorn.” Even compared with 2014’s biggest blockbuster—Taylor Swift’s 1989, which sold less than half as many copies during its debut week—that isn’t hyperbole.

Adele, of course, is more than a set of stratospheric numbers. In a stunted pop economy in which her contemporaries try to sound simultaneously like each other and like what might be trending next, Adele does the opposite: she sounds like the past. Her music is dignified, even stately, cutting across demographics. On 25, as on her previous releases, she cements her reputation as pop’s oldest soul with songs that are intimate and simple.

And then there’s the voice.

“She studied Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole—all the old greats,” says Ryan Tedder, lead singer of the pop-rock outfit OneRepublic, who wrote two singles with Adele on 21. “You have a voice that’s been trained on the greatest singers of all time.” That voice is a mighty instrument, clean and muscular. But most of all, says Tedder, who also co-wrote the ballad “Remedy” on 25, Adele’s appeal is her authenticity. “When she writes a song,” he says, “it doesn’t sound like songwriting by a committee. It’s just her.”

When you talk to people about Adele, pretty much everyone uses the word authentic sooner or later. But over the course of a week with her, it’s not one she uses to describe herself or her music. Nor is she into other industry jargon. At one point, she volunteers that she hates the word brand, for example. “They all use that word,” she says. “It makes me sound like a fabric softener, or a packet of crisps.”

Unlike nearly all her peers, Adele has no product-endorsement deals. She seems uninterested in the contemporary practice of working to maintain a specific image. She just doesn’t want to be perceived as a jerk. “Some artists, the bigger they get, the more horrible they get, and the more unlikable,” she says. “I don’t care if you make an amazing album—if I don’t like you, I ain’t getting your record. I don’t want you being played in my house if I think you’re a bastard.”

Adele will be played in a lot of houses in 2016. Her voice has the impact of a thousand tons of bricks. The zeitgeist can’t seem to get enough—the memes spawned by “Hello” alone were numerous enough to clog social media for weeks. Yet she’s the only pop star you can listen to with your grandma. That’s the reason she can dominate as fully as she does: Adele bridges pop music’s past and its future.

In person, Adele is frank and funny, peppering her speech with profanity and self-deprecating asides. Perhaps that’s why it’s startling to register how young she still is. 25, like the two albums before, is named for the age she was when she recorded it. Born Adele Laurie Blue Adkins and raised in the working-class London neighborhood of Tottenham by a single mom, she recalls her childhood through the lens of being a new mother. Her son Angelo is 3. “The environment in which my kid is growing up couldn’t be further away from the way I grew up,” she says. “But there was never any embarrassment about showing love in my family.”

Early on, she was inspired by R&B artists such as Lauryn Hill and Alicia Keys, along with legends like Etta James. At 14, she earned a spot at the BRIT School, an elite performing-arts school that also counts Amy Winehouse and Leona Lewis as alumnae. She was scouted on MySpace and signed with indie label XL at age 18. When she began recording her debut album, 19, her expectations were low. “I was a brand-new artist,” she says. “No one cared.” But a warm reception in the U.K. and a high-profile performance on Saturday Night Live in 2008 showcasing her single “Chasing Pavements” garnered buzz in the U.S. That winter, she won the Grammy for Best New Artist.

Superstardom came the following year when she released another single, “Rolling in the Deep,” a stomping anthem that set the tone for the record that followed and topped charts around the world. Released in 2011, 21 was largely about the end of a relationship that hit on classic themes of heartache and empowerment. Her songs often sounded simpler than they were. The easy melody and spare production of a track like “Someone Like You,” for instance, makes it seem universal. Yet it’s also an emotionally complex piece of writing.

By the time Adele was a household name, she was ready for some time off. After giving birth, she did the most radical thing an artist at her level could do: she went mostly dark to spend time with her boyfriend, charity executive Simon Konecki, and their son Angelo. “I was very conscious to make sure that our bond was strong and unbreakable,” she says. “I had to get to that point before I’d come back.”

This left her with little in the way of material for a new album, however. First she tried writing songs about motherhood, most of which she tossed. “I loved it,” she says “For me, it was great. Better than 25. But he’s the light of my life—not anyone else’s.” She didn’t want to write about the issues in her partnership with Konecki. “We’re in a grownup, adult, mature relationship,” she says. “I didn’t want to write about us, because I didn’t want to make us feel uncomfortable.” Nor did she want to resort to shallow material. “Can you imagine if I was singing about texting?” She cackles. “You would never get me singing about having a drink in the club.”

It wasn’t until Adele turned the lens back on herself that she was able to make progress. “That’s when I decided to write about myself and how I make myself feel, rather than how other people make me feel,” she says. She also decided not to rush it. “It doesn’t matter how long it takes,” she says. “You’re only as good as your next record.”

This is also the DNA of her songs on a compositional level. Much of what’s on the radio is cooked up by A-list producers and songwriters who churn out hooks, snippets of melody, lyrics and song concepts. Their work is then mined for precious No. 1 hits. It’s a sound rooted in the late ’90s, when artists like Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys began recording tracks written by superproducers like Max Martin and his Stockholm team of songwriters, who expertly blended American R&B and European dance music. Nearly two decades later, Martin is still shaping hits for artists including Taylor Swift and Katy Perry.

Top songs are also often written to track, which means a producer makes a beat, then a songwriter listens to it and attempts to generate words that fit that beat, sometimes singing nonsense until the language begins to take shape. It’s more about how lyrics sound than what they mean. This has become a bedrock part of the industry, as laid out in John Seabrook’s recent book The Song Machine: Inside the Hit Factory. And it’s how you end up with something like Ariana Grande’s dance-pop confection “Break Free”: “I only wanna die alive … Now that I’ve become who I really am.”

While every artist has a different level of involvement with the composition of their songs—Swift writes her own material, for example, and wrote her 2010 album Speak Now without the help of any other songwriters—there remains a widespread sensitivity to hit potential that guides the process. The songs on the radio are catchy because they’re engineered to be. “Mathematical songwriting” is how Tedder describes it. “It works if you’re someone who gets called on to write hits,” he says. “But it doesn’t lead you to a place like Adele. That sh-t doesn’t work on her.”

Adele’s dismissal of this is a big part of why she reminds people of the way music used to sound—she writes it the way music used to be written, decades ago, before that teen-pop boom of the late ’90s. “I’m not precious about writing credits—it’s whatever makes the best song,” she says. “But I can’t do that. I can’t write a song based on a track.” Her songs aren’t a Frankenstein’s monster of her best ideas, either. “I write a song from beginning to end,” she says. “I don’t go in sections. It’s a story.” Even though she, too, recorded songs for 25 with Martin, their cut—“Send My Love (To Your New Lover)”—doesn’t have the stitched-together feel of many radio hits.

Greg Kurstin, who co-wrote and produced “Hello,” says Adele’s process is increasingly rare. “She would start out with actual lyrics,” he says. “I don’t see that in the pop world.” Accordingly, Adele’s songs stand out against much of what’s popular now. “I’m not saying my album is incredible, but there’s conviction in it,” she says. “And I believe the f-ck out of myself on this album.”

A few days later, Adele is in the green room of the Today show. By this point, 25— five days after its release—has already been cemented as the fastest-selling record since Nielsen began tracking first-week sales in 1991, breezing past all previous record holders, including albums from ’N Sync, Britney Spears and Eminem. Accordingly, the mood is high among her entourage. She is being primped and prodded by a swarm of makeup artists and hairstylists and looks every bit a diva. But when a dog barks in the hallway, she rushes out to pet it, barefoot in her Burberry gown. Suddenly her manager, Jonathan Dickins, rushes in, calling to Adele’s stylist, Gaelle Paul: “Gaelle! Gaelle! We’ve got to get a new frock! The dog’s had a wee on this one! Where’s the Givenchy?” Paul, panicked, races out of the room. Once she’s gone, Dickins cracks up—it was a prank.

A few minutes later, Adele takes the stage to perform “Million Years Ago,” a nostalgic ballad. As soon as she starts to sing, the room falls silent. It’s a haunting song, dirgelike in its starkness. Halfway through, one of the producers dabs at his eyes. The artist who’s endlessly self-deprecating in conversation is instantly commanding when she opens her mouth to sing.

Unlike many of her contemporaries who use social media to telegraph relatability, Adele thinks the web is a big part of why stars get oversaturated. Not to mention artistically distracted. “It’s ridiculous that high-profile people have that much access to the public,” she says. “How am I supposed to write a real record if I’m waiting for half a million likes on a photo? That ain’t real.”

She’s not a Luddite, but there is a nostalgia that even comes across in her music. “Hello” is a song about calling someone on the phone, not Snapchatting them. “People were going on about that I was calling on a landline,” she says. “I still use landlines.” Much was made of the fact that she uses a flip phone in the song’s sepia-hued video, but that, too, was conscious. “It is so unlikely I’d have a flip phone in this day and age,” she says. “Call me old-fashioned, call me ignorant, but whatever. Take it or leave it.”

This ethos has guided her in other ways too. When reports surfaced that 25 would not be immediately available on streaming services such as Spotify or Apple Music, there was criticism from fans and industry insiders. She says she was under pressure from both sides—to stream and not to. (Artists, even mega-stars, make considerably less streaming their music as opposed to selling it.) “I don’t use streaming,” she says. “I buy my music. I download it, and I buy a physical [copy] just to make up for the fact that someone else somewhere isn’t. It’s a bit disposable, streaming.” How much her decision helped boost her sales is tough to quantify. “I know that streaming music is the future, but it’s not the only way to consume music,” she says. She believes “music should be an event.” ( 25 could yet come to streaming services in 2016.)

Her decision recalls Swift’s removal of her music from Spotify in 2014 and subsequent open letter to Apple asking that the world’s biggest music retailer change its policies on how artists are compensated, which Adele says she admired. “It was amazing,” she says. “I love her—how powerful she is. We’ll get lumped together now because of it, but I think we would both feel the ability to say yes or no to things even if we weren’t successful.”

This is important to her: the ability to make her own decisions and work at her own pace. She could have released 25 earlier to make it eligible for the 2016 Grammys, but instead it arrived when she was ready. In an era when artists release albums like clockwork and every morsel of information is meted out to generate news, Adele thinks we should slow down. “The speed with which we discover and get over things is too fast,” she says. “I’m frightened that I’m not going to be able to relate to my kid.”

The artist who has forged an extraordinary career by spinning her vulnerability out to the world is especially tender when she talks about Angelo. “He makes me so proud of myself,” she says. “He makes me like myself so much. And I’ve always liked myself—I’ve never not liked myself. I don’t have hang-ups like that. But I’m so proud of myself that I made him.” She plans to bring him with her on tour in 2016, which she says will be an ambitious production. “I really would like to fly through the arena for the beginning, but no one’s having it,” she says, laughing.

Back at her hotel for a photo shoot, someone suggests playing Beyoncé might set the mood. As soon as the opening chords of “Love on Top” start to play, Adele starts to dance. “Good choice,” she says. Then Angelo streams through the room, a whirlwind of energy. Eventually, he joins her in front of the camera, so the photographer moves closer, shooting her from the neck up, while Angelo sits beside her, out of the shot. He gazes up at her as she looks into the camera, then reaches for her hand. She grips it tightly. Her eyes light up and her mouth curves into the faintest smile.

From 19 to 30: A look back at Adele's career so far

One critic calls adele's 30 'her toughest, most powerful album yet'.

It's the moment Adele fans have been waiting for. After a six-year hiatus, the British singer-songwriter released her highly anticipated fourth studio album, 30, on Friday.

Best known for songs like Hello and Rolling In the Deep, Adele has collected 15 Grammy Awards, and her 2015 album, 25, is estimated to have sold  more than 22 millions copies worldwide. Critics say her commercial success will continue with 30 , with  Rolling Stone calling it "her toughest, most powerful album yet."

CBC News looks back on Adele's career leading up to the release of her new album.

2008-9: Adele releases debut album

biography of adele in english

In 2008, Adele released her debut album 19, which features songs like Chasing Pavements and Cold Shoulder. The album won her the first-ever BRIT Awards Critics' Choice the same year.

In a 2008 interview with U.K. soul writer Pete Lewis, the singer-songwriter said the album represented her life when she wrote it at age 19. "I just kinda remember becoming a bit of a woman during that time," Adele said. "And I think that is definitely documented in the songs."

These types of thematic albums allow artists like Adele to form personal connections with their audiences, says Brian Fauteux, an associate professor of popular music and media studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

"There's something about the way her songwriting and singing come together to tap into these universal feelings, emotions and experiences," said Fauteux.

"It allows fans to follow along with her career. She's aging at the same time as [her] fan base."

19 also won Adele Grammys for best new artist and best female pop vocal performance in 2009. She ended her first world tour, An Evening with Adele, later that year.

2011-12: Adele releases 2nd album and meets now ex-husband

biography of adele in english

Adele's second album, 21, was released in 2011 and is estimated to have sold nearly 31 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling album of the 21st century in the United Kingdom.

The same year, Adele went on her second tour and met her now ex-husband, British charity entrepreneur Simon Konecki.

The songstress collected more Grammy hardware in 2012, winning all six of the categories in which she was nominated, making her the second female artist to win that many awards in one night. (Following Beyoncé.) After her Grammy success, she revealed her plans to take a break from music. Her son, Angelo, was born later that year.

A major part of Adele's appeal, according to Canadian radio broadcaster and music writer Alan Cross, is that she comes across as "very, very human."

"She wasn't this perfect physical specimen who seemed to have it all," said Cross. "And the things that she's singing about really resonated with individual people. She was almost an everywoman."

2015-17: 3rd album brings continued success

biography of adele in english

Adele re-emerged in the music scene with her hit single Hello in October 2015. She released her third album, 25, in November that year, which became the best-selling album worldwide in 2015.

Her third concert tour, Adele Live 2016, ended the following year after she cancelled her final two performances due to vocal injuries. The singer first suffered from a vocal cord hemorrhage in 2011.

Despite medical setbacks, Adele won all five of her nominations at the 2017 Grammy Awards. During her acceptance speech for album of the year, she thanked her "husband" for his support, teasing her forthcoming marriage to Konecki.

Adele announced in 2016 that she would take another break from music to look after her then three-year-old son. Two years later, she married Konecki. But the singer later filed for divorce in 2019.

Their separation would become the focus of Adele's upcoming album.

In celebration of her 31st birthday in 2019, the singer posted several black-and-white photographs of herself on Instagram and reflected on the previous year. She signed off the Instagram post  by teasing new music, writing "30 will be a drum 'n bass record to spite you."

The artist hosted Saturday Night Live in October 2020 and told fans on Instagram that she was going back to her "cave," but that she would be back next year.

2021: New album and new beginnings

On Oct. 15, 2021, Adele released her first single in nearly six years, Easy On Me, which delves into her decision to end her marriage with Konecki. The song is featured in her latest album, 30, which releases Friday.

The album has already received praise from music critics. Rolling Stone magazine said 30 is Adele's "toughest, most powerful album," while Vulture called the record Adele's best work, writing: "This is the music she should've been making all along."

biography of adele in english

"It's the record where she accounts for her divorce and how that is affecting her relationship with her son," said Mikael Wood, a pop music critic with the Los Angeles Times.

"It's key to why fans feel so warmly about her, because I think that she's a songwriter and a singer that makes listeners feel like she's articulating their own complicated emotional experiences."

Wood says 30 contains heavier subject matter than some of Adele's previous albums, but that her powerhouse vocals and emotionally charged lyricism will provide fans with the same listening experience they have come to love from Adele.

  • Adele teases new single, and a potential album

"There's no doubt that this record will be a smash," said Wood. "If you love Adele, you're going to love this record."

Cross says Adele has always had an innate ability to write and produce good music, but that the success of her album will depend on whether she has been able to grow with her audience.

"Her fan base has become much more diversified, depending on where their life has taken them," said Cross.

"Can she continue to maintain a relationship with an audience that has grown older?"

Adele - Someone Like You (2011)

Adele began singing at the age of four. Growing up, she spent many days in Brockwell Park, where she would play the guitar and sing to her friends (something she alluded to in her 2015 song 'Million Years Ago'.)

Adele graduated from the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology in Croydon in May 2006, where she was a classmate of Leona Lewis and Jessie J.

At the time, Adele was actually more interested in going into A&R and hoped to launch other people's careers, rather than her own.

Four months after graduating, Adele published two songs on the fourth issue of the online arts website PlatformsMagazine.com . She had recorded a demo for a class project and given it to a friend. The friend then posted it on Myspace, which led to a phone call from Richard Russell, boss of the music label XL Recordings.

The Glorious Age of Adele

First came a brutal pandemic year. Then a career low point. In an intimate new interview, Adele talks about the artistic and personal rebirth that has her as happy as she’s ever been.

adele september elle 2022 cover

Adele’s career does not have much by way of low points. The British singer- songwriter has been on a steady, galactic trajectory since the 2008 release of her celebrated debut album, 19 . She has won 15 Grammys and, with her devastating vocal power and narrative command, has achieved such celebrity that her name has become shorthand for heartbreak itself. Last November, after a six-year hiatus, Adele released her fourth studio album, 30 , which became the best-selling album of the year in the U.S.

But sitting in her Beverly Hills kitchen one blistering afternoon in June, Adele can easily identify her own professional nadir: It was the morning of January 20, when she uploaded a teary video to Instagram to inform her fans she was canceling her Las Vegas residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, which was set to premiere the following evening. “It was the worst moment in my career, by far,” she says, within 10 minutes of us sitting down. She hasn’t spoken publicly about the debacle in the five months since, even as rumors about production issues and set disagreements swirled, and she’s eager to address it right away. “By far. I was so excited about those shows. It was devastating.”

Before Adele posted the video, she’d been up for more than 30 hours straight, tormenting herself over a choice she’d known for a week was the right one to make. But her team, already ravaged by absences from the Omicron surge, felt they’d accomplished more under tighter deadlines before. And there was so much on the line: months of planning and rehearsals, her crew’s and band’s livelihoods, and untold dollars in investment. Not to mention that many thousands of ticket holders had planned travel around birthdays, anniversaries, and graduations to come to Vegas and see her. Adele was terrified of letting everyone down. But she also knew in her bones that something about the show did not feel authentic to her. “There was just no soul in it,” she says. “The stage setup wasn’t right. It was very disconnected from me and my band, and it lacked intimacy. And maybe I tried too hard to give it those things in such a controlled environment.”

adele elle september cover 2022

At a dress rehearsal the night before she announced the cancellation, she got frustrated enough that, during the first song, she walked to the end of the 15,700-square-foot stage, sat down, and crossed her legs over the side. Then she pulled her mic away and started singing a cappella to the mostly empty, 4,300-plus-seat Colosseum. Even unplugged, she says, “they could hear me up at the top.” As she sang, Adele looked out into the first few rows and realized it was exactly this feeling she’d been missing: an intimate and unpretentious moment with a stardom that has, over 15 years and more than 120 million albums sold worldwide, become its own life force.

“This would be the best part of the show,” she remembers thinking. “For me, and for you. This is what I want,” she continues, motioning to an imagined small audience in front of her kitchen table, the proximity of a fan’s beating heart. “And none of that—” she gestures behind her, to the idea of a Vegas stage with its trappings and special effects—“has that.” The next morning, she called off the shows.

It was “brutal,” she says, but it was also a choice in line with what she is known for: a generational talent who has earned the right to engage with her fame on her own terms, and share her art and self with the world only when she feels most ready to do it. “With her, everything’s about authenticity,” says Jonathan Dickins, who has been her manager since she was 18 years old. “For her to go out and perform a show she’s not happy with would be a lie to the fans.”

adele september elle cover 2022

“The first couple of months was really, really hard,” Adele says. “I was embarrassed. But it actually made my confidence in myself grow, because it was a very brave thing to do. And I don’t think many people would have done what I did. I’m very proud of myself for standing by my artistic needs.”

When we meet at her home in June, Adele is a couple of weeks removed from her first proper return to the stage in five years. She is relaxed and rested—normally a terrible sleeper, she’s been getting a luxurious nine hours a night—and dressed down in black sweats and a black Nike Jordan T-shirt, hair back and face free of makeup. She greets me brightly and fixes us both iced coffees with almond milk while asking polite questions about Vermont, where I grew up. (To my surprise, she remembers passing through the state for a radio interview when she was promoting 19 .)

The next day, she would fly to New York with her boyfriend of a year, the sports agent Rich Paul, where they had plans to attend the wedding of Cleveland Cavaliers forward-center Kevin Love. Then she’d return home to London to take her nine-year-old son, Angelo, to see Billie Eilish at The O2. Angelo, whose father is her ex-husband, Simon Konecki, is “obsessed” with Eilish, Adele says. “He’ll go up to [his room] after school and read all the lyrics and then he’ll want to discuss them.” At the start of July, she would make her triumphant return to the stage, with two headlining nights at BST Hyde Park, an annual summer festival in London. The rest of the headliners were all men, and in response, Adele assembled an all-women bill for her shows, including Kacey Musgraves and a childhood favorite, the R&B singer Gabrielle. “London crowds are the best,” Adele says, grinning in anticipation. “They’re gonna be drunk before I even go on. We’re all gonna have the time of our lives.”

At some point after that, she planned to re-announce her much-anticipated shows in Vegas. Weekends With Adele will run at the Colosseum beginning toward the end of 2022, with nightly shows on Friday and Saturday each week. The announcement will mark an overdue culmination for 30 . Aside from two pretaped television specials (one in the U.S. and one in the UK) that aired the month of 30 ’s release, until her Hyde Park shows, Adele had scarcely performed any of the songs. After the Vegas news was out, she largely retreated from the public eye.

Outside of her songwriting, which—with searing hits like “When We Were Young,” “Someone Like You,” and “Hello”—is vulnerable to the point of narrative purgation, Adele has always been known as a private person. She does not have the password to her official Instagram account, which has more than 50 million followers, and rarely updates it. Like her mononymous peer Beyoncé, she is methodical about the press she chooses to participate in. When she returned to L.A. from Vegas in January, someone had tipped off the paparazzi about her flight, so there were cameras waiting at Paul’s house when she arrived. “I couldn’t even sit in the garden and be on the phone with my friends,” she says. “I was just trapped inside.” For a while, she had used a secret Twitter account to occasionally lurk her mentions, but as frustrated fans began to flood her social media accounts with critical comments about the abrupt announcement, she deleted it. “I was embarrassed,” Adele says, grimacing at the memory. “I went into hiding.”

As she licked her wounds, she more or less stopped promoting the album, afraid that doing so would make it seem like she didn’t care about the canceled shows. (As a result, she has at least one unreleased music video for 30 in the queue.) “I didn’t want anyone to think I weren’t trying my best,” she says, her voice getting quiet. “And I was.”

“I was embarrassed [to cancel the shows]. But it actually made my confidence in myself grow, because it was a very brave thing to do. I’m very proud of myself for standing by my artistic needs.”

She ventured out for a performance of 30 ’s standout power ballad “I Drink Wine” at the BRIT Awards in London. She wore a custom Valentino chiffon dress embroidered with lime sequins and sat on top of a piano, and to her surprise, no one booed. “I nearly cried at the end of my performance,” she remembers. “It felt strange receiving so much love when I’d let people down.”

The Colosseum stage is massive—its proscenium alone is reportedly 120 feet wide, almost half the length of a football field—and it initially posed issues for Adele, whose set designs tend to be understated and elegant. A planned water feature element, for example, “looked great for a couple of songs, and then didn’t do anything. It was just there.”

In an email, the legendary Bette Midler, who had her own residency at Caesars from 2008 to 2010, called the sheer size of the stage “absolutely terrifying.” She was supposed to make her grand entrance on a custom pile of Louis Vuitton luggage, but when it arrived during rehearsals, it felt “like Spinal Tap ,” Midler wrote: “Just minuscule on that gigantic stage. We had to fix the luggage, which took weeks. So for the first few weeks I made my entrance riding a donkey.”

For the stage design at the BRITs, Adele teamed up with the British entertainment architecture firm Stufish. It felt like a risky leap: “I wasn’t sure if [Stufish] were gonna take me seriously, especially after a failed show.”

She brought them inspiration from an unlikely source: Angelo’s fifth birthday party, for which she’d decorated the house herself. “I just went down to Michaels,” Adele explains, and then pauses to cross her eyes in pleasure at the mere thought of the arts and crafts chain. (“I love it there,” she says. “Oh my God, and World Market. You can fuckin’ get some great things there.”) She’d bought a bunch of big sequins and nailed them to a board to make her own photo booth backdrop, and for the BRITs, she wanted to re-create something like it—only on a national broadcast scale. Stufish was game, and produced a stunning, shimmering wall of gold glitter to complement her dress. She liked working with the firm, and they agreed to come on board for the revamped Vegas shows, along with director Matt Askem and creative director Kim Gavin.

After the BRITs that night, Adele and a couple of close friends picked up McDonald’s (her order is a Big Mac and fries and—“if I’m really, really going for it”—six McNuggets) and went back to her apartment to watch Netflix. As her friends dozed off, Adele’s eyes drifted to the mantelpiece. “My TV’s above my fireplace there,” she explains, looking over my shoulder at the fireplace in her L.A. kitchen for a comparison. “Let me find a pen. My fireplace here isn’t the same.”

adele september elle cover 2022

She gets up slowly—she has had a bad back since she was a teenager, and slipped her L6 in January 2021, when Angelo jumped out to scare her as she came out of the bathroom—and rummages through a drawer, returning with a blue Sharpie.

She draws a three-sided square, then two smaller ones nested inside, and explains: “It’s tiered stone, and I’d been playing over in my head how vast the stage is in Vegas. I was like, How do I make a stadium-size stage feel small in that room? I noticed all the borders around the fire, and I was like, What if I treat it like a puppet stage?” The next day, when the Stufish team came over to discuss design plans, she pointed to the mantelpiece: “I want that,” she told them.

The new stage is an adaptation of her design, a fitting inspiration for a show that aims to capture the intimacy she was missing in that January dress rehearsal. With the show, Adele says, “I want to tell the story of the beginning of my career to now. I’m not gonna give too much about it, but the show grows. The show grows . It’s all about the music, and it’s really, really nostalgic. It’s gonna be really beautiful.”

adele september elle cover 2022

It will also, of course, feature plenty of her hallmark banter. “I haven’t got any bullet points, obviously, when I talk,” she says. “That’s why my shows are so erratic. One time I gave, like, an hour speech about an aquarium!” (For her combination of talent and showmanship, Dickins compares her to Barbra Streisand and Midler, the latter of whom referred to Adele as “a living doll” with “exquisite taste”: “She’s so warm and winning that it’s impossible not to fall under her spell.”)

Adele wants to make things right for her fans, and anticipates feeling tremendous relief when the Vegas news is out. The residency makes logistical sense for her life—it’s critical to her that she not disturb her hard-earned co-parenting routine with Konecki, or uproot Angelo from his life in L.A.—and she also feels it’s the appropriate time in her career. “I think I’m right to do it right now,” she says. “I know I’m not, like, 60 years old and I haven’t got 20 albums under my belt. But I think my music will work in a show in Vegas.” She’s also excited to finally share in the communal enjoyment of her new music. “I haven’t really witnessed [ 30 ] out in the world yet,” Adele says. “It’s gonna be so emotional. I don’t know what I’m gonna do with meself.”

It’s well documented by now that 2020 was a brutal year for Adele. She and Konecki split up in 2019, and she struggled in the early days of the pandemic. She was mourning the end of her relationship and felt despairingly lonely; she had regular anxiety attacks. In her darkest moments, she recorded voice memos of herself crying, and talking to Angelo, a couple of which made it onto 30 . “It was horrible,” she remembers. “I was flying around this house like a fucking wasp.”

“I’ve never been in love like this. I’m obsessed with him.”

Gradually, she dug herself out of the hole. She committed herself to therapy and tried particularly L.A. balms, like sound baths and meditation. She started lifting weights and boxing every day, and found that the routine centered her, and that she liked feeling strong in her body. She also made amends with her estranged father, Mark Evans, who was absent for most of her life. He died of cancer in May 2021; Adele has said their reconciliation “set little me free.”

Finally, and perhaps most pivotally, she fell madly in love. “Beyond,” she says. “I’ve never been in love like this. I’m obsessed with him.” Adele and Paul had been friends for some time, but their relationship became romantic in 2021, and they went public when she sat courtside with him at an NBA Finals game that July. (“Lucky for him, I love basketball,” Adele says. She’s partial to the Phoenix Suns.) She turned 34 on May 5, and celebrated her one-year anniversary with Paul—as well as her purchase of a nearby Beverly Hills mansion formerly owned by Sylvester Stallone—nearly a week later.

Paul has three children of his own, including a daughter in college, and they are renovating their new home together with a blended family in mind. (Adele’s one existing personal social media account is for Pinterest, where she says she’s been collecting ideas for interiors.) Paul seems a good match for Adele. He has repped LeBron James for a decade, giving him a familiarity with the stratospheric circle of fame she inhabits. She says he makes her feel safe, and encourages her to live her guarded life more freely. When they were discussing taking a vacation recently, Adele told Paul she had always wanted to go to one of the Italian islands, but feared the paparazzi presence there. “He was like, ‘You would let that stop you from going to the place that you most want to go on vacation?’ ” she remembers, laughing with affection. “He’s like, ‘For one photograph, what’s the worst that can happen?’”

“I definitely want more kids. I’m a homemaker and I’m a matriarch, and a stable life helps me with my music. But right now, all I got in my brain is Vegas. I wanna fucking nail it.”

When I ask if she wants to get married again, she says, “Yes, absolutely,” and when I push further to check if she’s engaged, she offers the most expert—and, as is her style, cheekiest—non-answer I’ve ever encountered. “Well! Well. Well, I’m not married,” she says, and starts to laugh. “I’m not married.” We sit with that for a beat, and then I try again: So…are you engaged? “I’m not married. I’m not married!” she says again, and takes a big gulp of coffee before singing, “I’m just in loooove! I’m happy as I’ll ever be. I might as well be married.” (In another conversation soon after, she is more straightforward. “I’m not engaged. I just love high-end jewelry, boy!”)

She is more conclusive on the topic of expanding her family. “I definitely want more kids,” she says. “I’m a homemaker and I’m a matriarch, and a stable life helps me with my music.

“But right now, all I got in my brain is Vegas,” she adds. “I wanna fucking nail it.”

The sellout shows in Hyde Park—Adele’s first concerts in half a decade—went off without a hitch. She was nervous, as she always is before performing, but after the third song or so, she relaxed and started to enjoy herself. “They were two of the best crowds I’ve ever stood in front of, ever, in my whole career,” she tells me over Zoom from her backyard in Los Angeles on the Fourth of July. (“I’m sunbathing topless by my pool, so I’m not gonna join you on video,” she says, laughing. She plans on making herself a white wine spritzer when we hang up.) The experience made her anticipate Vegas even more. “That’s the first thing I said to Rich when I got in the car after the second show,” she says. “I was like, ‘Well, fuck, now I’ve got itchy feet. I’ve got itchy feet, Rich!’”

adele september 2022 cover elle

When she sang “Someone Like You” on the first night in London, she let the audience take over on one of the final choruses, and got choked up listening to them sing. “I wrote that on my own, in my little tiny flat, when I was 21,” Adele says. “The fact that they all still remember the words and love the song, it was just incredible.” Writing and releasing 30 was a salve for her; now, nearly a year after its release, she can finally see how her fourth album resonates with the world, and fits into the story of her career.

“I like seeing myself in these four different moments of my life,” Adele says. “It’s been really emotional putting the set list and the visuals together, because so much has happened. Fifteen years is a long time. But one thing I feel so lucky with how big my life is now, is that I really lived a normal life. You know?” She pauses.

“I remember writing 19 very, very much, and going from the studio to meet my friends at the pub. I remember getting on the Tube and going to every meeting I had, and I remember going to after-parties of my friends’ little gigs. I remember all of those things, and I remember all of the first times I did something. I remember them even when I’m doing them for the millionth time.”

Adele is a British singer-songwriter. When she appeared on the cover of British Vogue in October 2011, editor Alexandra Shulman said, "Adele has won over the world with her heartbreaking voice and her ability to seem as if she is very much herself."

  • Adele Adkins was born in London in May 1988.
  • She has a close relationship with her mother who raised her as

a single parent. Speaking to US Vogue Adele said: "She's

the calmest person, really strong and clever and beautiful." She

fostered Adele's interest in music by taking her to concerts at a

young age and having her sing to friends at dinner parties.

  • In 2006, her career launched when she was signed to XL

Recordings. Her breakthrough single, *Hometown

Glory,* was released in October 2007.

  • The following year, her debut

album, 19, entered the British charts at number

  • Later in 2008, Adele broke into the US market after appearing on the same episode of Saturday Night Live as then US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin. • At the 2009 Grammys, she won Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. It was also a fashion moment as Anna Wintour had dressed her in a custom-made black satin Barbara Tfank dress. Adele - Biography

Adele has won grammys, oscars and more....

Adele performs onstage during the "Weekends with Adele" Residency Opening at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on November 18, 2022 in Las Vegas, Nevada

In summer 2007, north London teenager Adele Adkins was booked to appear on TV show Later with... Jools Holland. Producers had invited the unknown to share the stage with Paul McCartney. Shaking with nerves, she nevertheless delivered. Her domination of the world's soundtrack had begun.

Adele's early career

It was not the last time the girl with the stadium-filling voice would find herself in the same context as the Beatles legend. Four years later Adele had two records in the top five of both the UK single and album charts, becoming the first act to do so since the Fab Four. The nerves have never gone away. "Behind the eyes it's pure fear. I find it difficult to believe I'm going to be able to deliver," she told one interviewer. Nor is Adele, now a multiple Grammy winner, any less starstruck. "I just met Daniel [expletive] Day Lewis," she tweeted after one awards ceremony.

The unique mix of killer talent, huge personality and a salty vocabulary that would make a truck driver blush is what appeals to her global fanbase. However, the wisecracking soul songstress has never chased fame for the sake of it. "I just want to make music. I don't want anyone chatting about me," she said previously. But people started chatting about her when she was barely out of school.

She was born Adele Laurie Blue Adkins on 5 May 1988 when her mother Penny was 18. Her father left when she was two. Speaking about her mother's sacrifices, the singer told a newspaper: "She fell pregnant with me when she would have been applying for Uni but chose to have me instead. She never, ever reminds me of that. I try to remember it." Penny, a furniture-maker and adult learning activities organiser, brought her daughter up in London, first in Tottenham and then Brixton. To this day, Adele is an ardent supporter of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. Her early influences were the Spice Girls, Etta James and Pink. Seeing the Missundaztood singer live was a defining moment for the budding musician, then aged 13 or 14. "I had never heard, being in the room, someone sing like that live… I remember sort of feeling like I was in a wind tunnel, her voice just hitting me. It was incredible."

After graduating from the Brit School for Performing Arts with fellow alumni including Leona Lewis and Jessie J, she recorded a demo and was signed to XL Recordings. The same team has accompanied the Tottenham girl on her meteoric journey. At the 2008 Brit Awards, her 19 her debut album, named for her age at the time, earned the Critics' Choice award. Then at the 2011 Brits her live rendition of Someone Like You cracked the hearts of the audience wide open.

The haunting ballad of love and loss was from 21, the disc which became the biggest selling album of the 21st century and the secured number one spot in 26 charts across the globe. And team Adele celebrated the following year at the Grammys when the diva won so many trophies, she should have thought about hiring a removal truck to take them home. Her mantelpiece also boasts a Golden Globe and an Oscar for Skyfall, the eponymous track of the 23rd Bond outing. In her persona life, she quietly settled down away from the limelight with her partner ethical entrepreneur Simon Konecki. He was her rock when surgery on her vocal chords forced her to take several months off in 2011. The couple welcomed their son Angelo, born in October 2012 called Angelo. Her blissful family life has inspired a change in her creative output. "I want to write happy songs about being in love," she said previously.

Adele's later career

Following the success of 21, Adele went on to release 25 – another Grammy winning record – and 30. Both albums brought success to her name and cemented her as one of the greatest modern day vocalists and artists. So much so, that a multi-million dollar residency in Vegas eventually beckoned her.

Perhaps the success of 25 and 30 might have been down to more heartbreak, however, after Adele and Simon divorced and have, ever since, been co-parenting Angelo in Los Angeles. Fortunately, Adele found love again with sports agent, Rich Paul.

Adele

Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, better known simply as Adele, is an English singer-songwriter and musician. Adele was offered a recording contract from XL Recordings after a friend posted her demo on Myspace in 2006. The next year she received the Brit Awards "Critics' Choice" award and won the BBC Sound of 2008. Her debut album, 19, was released in 2008 to much commercial and critical success.
