Tired of waiting for your favorite Xbox games to load? Microsoft's Xbox Quick Resume feature eliminates the need to revisit the title screen on supported games, instantly throwing you back into the action.

Next-gen consoles like the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Series S have the ability to boot games up ultra-fast. Aside from graphical and performance enhancements, it's one of the main selling points people look for in the latest line-up of consoles.

However, the Xbox Series X|S gains the upper hand by allowing you to switch between multiple games, right where you left off.

What Is Xbox Series X|S Quick Resume?

Leveraging Microsoft's Xbox Velocity Architecture, players can easily switch from one game to another quickly , leaving their current game saved in the state it was left in.

While it's important to save your games regularly, Xbox Quick Resume means you can return to the game at the same point, as if your game was frozen in time. Your gameplay won't change, and you can instantly pick up the game bypassing any launch or menu screens.

Full-memory Xbox Series X|S titles can use up to three save states, meaning you can quickly resume multiple titles that you're currently playing. Although, according to Microsoft's Quick Resume support page , you can resume more titles depending on the console:

Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox console titles use less memory, so the consoles can store more than three when these titles are saved.

The Quick Resume feature also applies to online games. However, if the game is server-based, you may find you get pushed back to the game's menu if the online match or game has finished, timed out, or disconnected.

Which Xbox Games Support Quick Resume?

Most Xbox Series X|S titles support Xbox Quick Resume. But, if you're not sure, you can easily check by launching a game.

Press the Xbox button to open the guide; in the top right-hand corner, there will be a Quick Resume banner. This indicates the game uses the feature and will save the game's current state when you switch to another game and return to it later on.

How to Use the Quick Resume Feature on Xbox Series X|S

Using Quick Resume on an Xbox Series X|S is simple; you don't need to activate or install anything for it to work. Here's how to use it:

• Launch an Xbox Quick Resume-compatible game.
• Once in a game, press the Xbox button and use the guide to launch another game.
• Press the Xbox button once you're in another game, then select the previous game you were playing.

Quick Resume will work even after the Xbox has been in sleep mode, has been turned off, or unplugged.

How to Remove Games From Quick Resume Memory

There may be occasions where you don't want to use Quick Resume, or you want to replace your existing set of Quick Resume games with other titles.

To do this, press the Xbox button to launch the guide. Navigate to the game you want to remove, then press the Options button on your Xbox controller. From here, you can select Quit to shut the game down entirely.

When you launch the game again, it will boot from scratch, allowing you to continue or load your previous saves.

Resume Games in an Instant

Quick Resume on Xbox Series X|S consoles is a welcome feature from Microsoft. With future Xbox updates, players can enjoy more performance enhancements and changes to Quick Resume.

For now, though, save your games regularly, and marvel at how the Series X and S still holds the edge over the PS5 by saving game states without taking up additional storage space.

One such feature is Quick Resume, which is definitely as cool as it sounds. It allows you to leave multiple games running on your Xbox Series X, with the option to hop between them to start where you left off. It's almost as if you've just paused multiple games on your system and can swap between them at your leisure.

This is something many gamers have dreamt of for some time, because it makes indecision feel like a non-starter. Plus, this is something many of us have been wanting ever since consoles were able to tackle realistic graphics. This is a feature that's unique to the Xbox Series X, so if you're curious about how to use it, we've got all the answers for you right here. Now you can impress everyone around the holidays with your fancy new tech and what it's capable of.

How to use Quick Resume on Xbox Series X

Quick Resume is a feature you'll want to use a lot on your Xbox Series X. It uses the system's Xbox Velocity Architecture to load instances of each game you're playing after storing them in the system's SSD. It can store up to five instances simultaneously that you can hop in and out of as if you were changing radio stations.

Using Quick Resume is simple, as it's already turned on by default on each system. You don't need to sift through menus to find a way to turn it on. First, however, you need to make sure that the game you're using is compatible with Quick Resume. Look for games that feature a "X/S" logo on its thumbnail and go from there.

When you load the game you want to use for Quick Resume, press the Xbox button on your controller. Simply navigate through the menu that pops up and choose another game to load. You can go to the home screen to do this as well. You will now launch the second game, and you'll have two running at the same time.

Repeat this method until you've opened up the desired amount of games open. They will simply stack on top of each other. When you're finished prepping, you can open the Xbox menu up again with the Xbox button on your controller, then choose the game you want to play at the moment. You'll be dropped right into the game without having to wait for a loading screen, startup, or anything of that nature.

That's all you really need to do! It's very easy to utilize. If you want to close some of the games you have running, all you need to do is quit them the same way you normally would any other game. Otherwise, they will remain active as long as you choose.

That's about it when it comes to using the Quick Resume feature on Xbox Series X. Keep in mind that not all games are supported, but Microsoft is adding more titles to its list all the time.

How The Xbox Series X’s 'Quick Resume' Feature Works (And Doesn’t Work)

Among all of the next-gen features touted for the Xbox Series X (and S), few are more promising than Quick Resume. On paper, Quick Resume grants you the ability to juggle several games in a suspended state at a system level, at which point you can load them in seconds, picking up exactly where you left off. It is—and I sincerely apologize if you’ve heard this pun before—a potential game-changer.

The idea of a flawlessly functional Quick Resume sure sounds utopian. In reality, while not quite utopian, Quick Resume is pretty cool. There are just some wrinkles to be mindful of.

You can juggle five games with quick resume..

A round of previews from earlier in the fall revealed that Quick Resume could sustain five or so game states at any given time. I’ve largely found that to be the case. Switching between five games— Assassin’s Creed , Tell Me Why , Halo: The Master Chief Collection , Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater , and Wizard of Legend —all in one session has proved no issue. There seems to be a time limit, though. When I tried to jump back into Tell Me Why days after I last played it, I had to reopen the game from scratch. Thank the coding gods for autosave!

That said, don’t count on Quick Resume to balance your entire library at once. Juggling six games or more seems to cause the feature to sputter out, though not in any notable way. It’s more that, without warning or a heads up of any sort, some games just need to go through the entire startup phase the next time you open them up. (I’ve found that larger games tend to get dropped first.)

There’s another caveat. As noted in our review of Microsoft’s new machines , Quick Resume is still a work in progress and has been partially deactivated as launch day looms. Microsoft informed us on Wednesday that they’d discovered an issue with some games that are receiving next-gen upgrades; as a result, Quick Resume support has been temporarily turned off for those games. Sure enough, we’re now seeing it work with fewer games. Kotaku editor-in-chief Stephen Totilo has been testing it out on the Series S. It works just fine for some games ( Batman Arkham Knight , the new Assassin’s Creed , the awesome Tony Hawk remasters) but not at all for others ( Gears 5 , Forza Horizon 4 ). Oddly, just last night, I was able to use Quick Resume to swap to both of those games on my Series X—but earlier in the week, I wasn’t able to do so with Forza Horizon 4 . Things are clearly in flux. Microsoft PR tells us that a system update timed to launch day should address some of this, but that games will also need individual updates, and it sounds like those updates will be coming after launch. We don’t know the timeframe.

Quick Resume doesn’t work for every game.

Quick Resume functions automatically in the background. You don’t have to toggle it on in the settings or otherwise dig through an arcane web of menus to activate it. It just sort of happens—or doesn’t happen.

Microsoft has not bothered to make it obvious if a game supports Quick Resume, perhaps because they just assumed it’d be available for the vast majority of games. From what we can tell, you’ll figure out which ones work by simply trying to use Quick Resume with them. After you’ve started a game and try switching to it with Quick Resume, you’ll see a badge on the upper right as the game loads in (takes maybe nine seconds). The badge even has a neat little “play” symbol, to really drive the point home:

You sort of have to play a memory game in your head about which games do and don’t support the feature. (You’ll pick it up quickly.) As far as I can tell, there’s no tidy menu on the Xbox UI that shows you which games your system is currently juggling with Quick Resume. You can still switch between games on the fly by using the universal Xbox menu—just like you can with the Xbox One—but you’ll get taken back to the title screen of any game that doesn’t work with Quick Resume. Remember that before trying to bounce between games with abandon. And make sure to manually save often!

With some games, Quick Resume straight-up doesn’t work. For example: Whenever I’ve tried to switch to Cake Bash —an awesome free-for-all party game that’s more or less a Mario Party mini-game compendium on a sugar rush—I’ve had to go through all of the startup screens each time. At the moment, the same thing is true for Destiny 2 and The Outer Worlds .

Keep in mind that all of this testing was conducted during a pre-release window. Microsoft says some games that don’t support Quick Resume will add functionality for the feature after launch. (We’ve reached out for a full list of games that currently do not and will not work with Quick Resume but, at press time, Microsoft did not provide one.)

You’ll get booted from multiplayer or other online-connected games.

Trying to make use of Quick Resume during a multiplayer game might be a little weird. How many people are really planning on dipping out of a round of Halo to, say, repaint a car in Forza Horizon 4 before jumping back in the fray? Still, the point remains: If you try to switch games during a Halo 4 match, expect a one-way trip to the lobby.

Destiny 2 , a multiplayer game that requires constant connectivity but is often enjoyed as a single-player, player-vs.-environment experience, is even more strict. Even when I’ve just been hovering in orbit—and not standing on any shared world alongside other players—I’ve been sent right back to the title screen. Solo Guardians, take note.

Your game stays suspended even if you unplug your console.

When Microsoft first made the Series X available to press, during those early fall previews, you might have heard word that Quick Resume works even if the console is cut off from power. In my experience, I’ve found that to be the case—to a point.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve left my Series X unplugged for a half an hour (or more) on multiple occasions. Each time I’ve returned to a once-dormant Xbox Series X, Halo: The Master Chief Collection has had to start up fresh. With other games, though, it’s seamless—and doesn’t even spur longer load times. One of the games I was testing took about 8.1 seconds to switch to with Quick Resume. Following a period of total power-off, that actually dipped to 7.5 seconds. For Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 , those figures were 8.4 and 8.2. With Wizard of Legend , the best cooperative roguelike, they were 5.2 and 4.9.

As with the multiplayer thing, the use case here isn’t enormous. But as a failsafe against unpredictable circumstances—say, power outages, chew-happy pets, or children who have a penchant for unplugging random cables—it’s nice to have.

That, at the end of the day, is the selling point of Quick Resume. It won’t change your life in some immediately obvious way. But then you’ll pivot from busting heads in Assassin’s Creed to busting heads in Gears 5 . You’ll realize how little time you spent sitting there, waiting for your game to load. And then it’ll become apparent that Quick Resume is one of those features you never knew you wanted, and one that, when it works, works exactly as intended: a small thing that allows you to spend your entire time playing games actually playing games. Unless you try to bounce between seven games at once.

Anyone who’s been lucky enough to snatch up an Xbox Series X or a Series S may have heard of Quick Resume, the new feature that allows you to jump between games without restarting them.

Keep reading to find out what Quick Resume is and how you can use it to make the most out of the latest Xbox console.

What is Quick Resume?

Quick Resume is a feature that takes advantage of the Xbox Velocity Architecture in the next-gen Xbox console, allowing you to easily switch between games without needing to reload the application.

So if you wanted to switch from one game to another, the consoles will keep the save of the current game, so when you return you can pick up right where you left off.

You can do this with a maximum of three store saves at once, meaning you can have three games opened at once to flip through if you wanted.

Also keep in mind that while Quick Resume does work for online games, you might not pick up exactly where you left off in some titles, and some may push you to the menu instead of loading the game up straight away.

Microsoft does recommend that you do save your game each time you do something else on your console, as losing a save for Quick Resume will result in all unsaved data being lost.

You can also use the recently played titles option within the Guide itself.

If the game that you’ve clicked is using Quick Resume and can be resumed quickly, the top right corner will house a little logo that says Quick Resume.

Some games do not support Quick Resume just yet, but Microsoft claimed it is working to add Quick Resume support for more games.

Xbox Series X Quick Resume is purpose built for the perpetually indecisive

Quick Resume removes downtime and emphasises playtime during my hands-on with Xbox Series X

This is going to be a generation of convenience. It's difficult to know how the boundaries of graphical fidelity and game performance are going to expand in the years to come, particularly now, still weeks away from the launch of the Xbox Series X and PS5 . But even at this early stage of the next cycle, it has become increasingly clear to me that Microsoft 's initial focus is on making it easier than ever before to play the games you want to play, when you want to play them, with as little interruption as possible. No feature speaks to that philosophy more than Xbox Series X Quick Resume. 

You've probably heard about this feature in the past and dismissed it out of hand. I know I had. At its most basic, Quick Resume will let you switch seamlessly between multiple games in a suspended state and resume playing instantly from where you last left off. Actually, that's not the feature at its most basic – it's the entirety of it. On paper, Quick Resume doesn't sound all the exciting. In practice, it's as if my worst habits are no longer a hindrance.

Nobody likes a loading screen

The problem is that I am perpetually indecisive. While I have a tendency to play unhealthily long runs of new releases (spoiler free since 2015!), my daily sessions will typically involve as much downtime as they do playtime. Get wiped out in Call of Duty: Warzone and switch over to Netflix. Get bored of a show and switch over to something else. It won't be long before I get the urge to spend a further 20 minutes running through urban decay and decide to switch back over to Warzone. This cycle continues until I fall asleep on the sofa. Why yes, I do have a Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription and a debilitatingly bad back; why do you ask?

The problem with playing games this way is that the Xbox One family of consoles were not built to facilitate it. The fast resume feature was either sparsely supported or barely functioned, meaning you'd often be hit with lengthy loading time between one game and application that you were otherwise expecting to load in an instant. Typically, I'd fill that waiting period by looking at my phone, doom-scrolling Twitter and TikTok until I struggle to summon the energy to continue playing. Quick Resume on Xbox Series X has completely transformed my engagement and energised my attention span.

One of the benefits of the custom SSD, and the system architecture Microsoft has built around it, is the ability to suspend multiple active game sessions and then load between them freely with minimal friction. This means that you could stop playing one game, boot back to the dashboard to have a little root through the store, respond to a message, or check on achievement progress, before then immediately launching back into the experience without skipping a beat. Or perhaps you defeated a particularly tricky boss in a game and want to take a breather, you now have the option to jump straight back into any of your recently played games and pick up exactly where you left off.

It isn't instant, but it's pretty damned fast. In my testing, Quick Resume would often take between six and 15 seconds, depending on what game you were booting into or from (some, like Control and Red Dead Redemption 2, are a little more power hungry than, say, Alan Wake or GTA 4). And remember, this is right back to where you left off playing; replacing the one-two minute load times you'd typically endure booting up a game cold from your library, before then having to load the save once you've gotten through all of the corporate logos. We're talking about minutes of engagement returned to you, and it makes the experience of playing games more convenient and accessible than ever before. 

As this is pre-launch hardware – I'm expecting the operating system to receive an update before launch on November 10 – there's a chance that the Quick Resume times and stability could change. The fundamentals won't, however. The SSD is able to achieve all of this because it effectively stores your session as a sort of 'save state' (to use the parlance of the emulation community) in the active RAM. How many of these save states can be held in the background at once? I managed seven before the system started to struggle loading back into where I'd left off, but then only the truly indecisive (see also: me) would ever have that many active games in rotation to begin with.

Quick Resume is the (literal) game changer

As it stands, there isn't currently any way to see which games are currently active within the Quick Resume function. Given that Quick Resume continues to work even after you've turned the Xbox Series X off and back on again, it would be nice to have a reminder of what games are there waiting for you in an instant – kind of like how you can flip through your open tabs in a browser window on your phone, for example. Nothing worse than thinking you'll be able to quickly jump into something only to find a loading screen, as quick as they are on Xbox Series X. Oh, and perhaps this goes without saying, but expect some rocky functionality with multiplayer games – you're likely to get booted out of a server before you can take advantage of the Quick Resume functionality.  

Microsoft's internal data indicated that the average player plays between three and four games a month . Quick Resume is a function built in service of that statistic. Given how important Xbox Game Pass has become to the entire ecosystem, it's easy to see how integral something like Quick Resume will become in the years ahead. The ability to quickly jump between the games you're currently enjoying across four generations of Xbox consoles encourages you to spend more time experimenting and less time enduring downtime. For me and my indecisiveness, it makes me feel as if I'm being proactive with my time rather than squandering it. And for that, I thank Xbox Series X Quick Resume endlessly.

Xbox Series X: Quick Resume Is A (Literal) Game Changer

After getting hands on with the Xbox Series X, the standout next-gen feature is Quick Resume, letting you get more out of your time gaming.

The Xbox Series X has been in our possession for a few days now (a non-final preview build from Microsoft), and I've been able to experience next-gen console gaming first-hand . We're a bit limited in terms of what we're able to talk about right now, especially since we don't have access to Series X-specific games. But I did see how faster load times and Quick Resume impact the experience. And I think Quick Resume can be a real game-changer.

I've come away impressed with the practical application of Quick Resume--I said as much in my Xbox Series X hands-on preview . What happens is when you're in one game and go back to the dashboard to boot up another game, the current one gets suspended in its exact state. You can do this for multiple games, all simultaneously frozen in the state you left it. When you switch back to a game that had been suspended, you'll just pick up right where you left off without having to relaunch it or reload a save. It's not a deliberate option you need to choose or enable, it's just a feature built into the system.

Now, this isn't news since Microsoft has detailed the feature a while back and even put out a video of their own of Quick Resume in action (and you can see us using it toward the end of the video below). I didn't think it was that big of a deal at first, but actually putting it to use convinced me that it can make more of a difference than I initially thought.

When combined with Game Pass, where I have multiple games downloaded and jumping between, Quick Resume really proves its usefulness.

Basically, I'm getting more out of my time playing games. I like to jump between different styles or genres of games in one sitting, mixing things up when I've had my fill of one type. For example, I'll pour a few hours into an RPG and after major story events or boss fights, I'll take a break by hopping into something lighter, then jump into a competitive shooter for a few rounds before decompressing with another chill kind of game. I could always do that before, but the speed at which I can change gears means I don't really have to think twice about whether or not I want to take the time to switch to another game.

It only takes five to eight seconds to jump from one game to another through Quick Resume, which is a fraction of the time it takes to launch a different game and load a save on any other current-gen console. In my experience, I've been able to successfully suspend six games at the same time and hop between them. When starting up a seventh game, the first one I booted in that set of games would have to be relaunched if I went back to it. I wish there was some sort of indicator for how far you're pushing Quick Resume, or a warning if another game state is about to close, but I feel like suspending six games at once is more than enough.

Quick Resume is a type of feature that we don't even have on high-end gaming PCs yet, and it's a great example of innovative next-gen tech that genuinely improves the user experience. And when combined with Game Pass, where I have multiple games downloaded and jumping between, Quick Resume really proves its usefulness. Keep in mind that this feature also applies to the cheaper Xbox Series S , so you'll be getting the same advantage regardless of the Xbox model you choose.

What is Quick Resume?

How to know if a game supports quick resume.

There are a lot of excellent features packed into the Xbox Series X and S that make them the most powerful consoles in the Xbox family. One feature above others, however, was featured heavily in the consoles’ marketing: Quick Resume. Quick Resume is, almost undeniably, one of the absolute best features on the Xbox Series X and S that isn’t featured on any other gaming console.

Although it may seem fairly self-explanatory, there are some details of Quick Resume that require a little bit of in-depth explanation so that Xbox owners can make the most out of the feature. Here’s everything you need to know about the Xbox Series X and S’ hottest feature, Quick Resume.

Quick Resume is a feature on the Xbox Series X and S that allows players to instantly start a game and pick back up where they left off without needing to completely reload the app. This means that, for some Xbox games, seeing the title screen every time you start playing a game is a thing of the past. Instead, players can simply start the game and it’ll take them to the exact moment they stopped playing last.

Because it’s able to be used even after the console has been turned off and unplugged, Quick Resume can make for a much more streamlined experience when setting up a console after moving it. That said, there are still some problem areas for Xbox to iron out before the feature is totally perfect.

For starters, Quick Resume doesn’t work if the game app has been closed. While this does make sense, it can be frustrating to lose your place if a game is updated between play sessions as updates require game apps to be closed. Additionally, although many online games say that they support Quick Resume such as Halo Infinite or Elden Ring , those sorts of games always restart you to the menu when internet connection is lost. This means that you’ll still be seeing those start menus every time you open the games despite their promises of reduced loading times.

The final issue with Quick Resume is that not every game supports it. Most new games do, however, it’s all on a case-by-case basis meaning that you’ll need to manually check which titles you can simply hop back into. To check if a game you have downloaded to your console supports Quick Resume, select the “My Games & Apps” icon on the Xbox dashboard and then navigate to the “Groups” tab. Here, you’ll be able to see the games in your library that support the feature. You’re even able to hop directly into them from this menu. The games are similarly listed in the “My Games & Apps” tab in the Xbox menu, accessible by hitting the Xbox button on your controller.

Xbox Series X/S Quick Resume Works Even If You Unplug the Console

Xbox Series X’s Quick Resume feature, which is also available on the Xbox Series S, is arguably its most ‘magical’ new offering. It allows you to quickly swap between multiple games without booting them up fresh, and resume playing from where you left off. It's perfect for getting a few rounds of Halo in with your friends between longer stretches of a big campaign game, without losing progress. The best bit, though? Quick Resume remembers where you were even if you unplug the console.

So how do you use it? Quick Resume doesn’t require any set up. It’s part of the default feature set of the Xbox Series X|S, and works from the moment you open a game. To ‘engage’ Quick Resume, simply stop playing a game and head back to the Dashboard. Boot up a second game, play around with that for a while, and then re-open your previous game. A ‘Quick Resume’ logo will appear in the upper-right corner of the screen as the game loads, which takes around five or so seconds. You’ll then find yourself in exactly the same spot as you were when you left the game. Recent games primed for Quick Resume can be identified in the Guide Menu by a small icon next to the game name.

You can have multiple games ‘stacked’ in Quick Resume, but there is a limit. While Microsoft has not revealed an upper limit, I find that the system caps out at five games, with the game I haven’t played in the longest time being the one that has to boot from scratch again. It may be that this limit depends on the games being stacked, though.

Most impressive, though, is Quick Resume’s ability to activate after the Xbox has been fully shut down and unplugged or turned off at the power outlet. As an example anecdote, I was able to Quick Resume a game of Gears Tactics that I hadn’t touched for several days, during which the console was fully powered down and unplugged multiple times.

Also anecdotally, the system hasn’t been 100% reliable, with a couple of games during testing eventually resetting after a full unplugged power down, but as my testing has been conducted pre-release there may still be kinks in the system that will be ironed out before retail launch. For the most part, though, Quick Resume after unplugging has worked as intended, and it’s as impressive (and witchcraft-like) as it sounds.

We awarded Xbox Series X an 8/10 review , calling it "a quiet, compact, laser-targeted games machine that should make 4K/60fps gaming the wonderful new norm, but it currently lacks must-play games." Series S got a 7/10 review , saying it "could shine as a second console, but it's hard to recommend as your primary gaming platform due to its 1440p resolution and claustrophobic storage capacity."

Microsoft is making Quick Resume easier to manage with a new update for Xbox Series X/S .

The update, available now to early testers in the Alpha Skip-Ahead group, lets you see all games which currently support Quick Resume from your Guide.

In your Groups list, you'll also be able to see all games with which you currently have a Quick Resume state saved - visible in My Games & Apps, or you can add this your home screen.

From there, you can also delete Quick Resume saves for games you no longer need, freeing up space in the process. Here's a look at that, as shared on Twitter by Xbox engineering lead Eden Marie:

The new feature is one of several changes rolling out to Alpha Skip-Ahead users detailed in a new Xbox Insider blog post . Another addition is the option to enable audio passthrough in media apps.

Quick Resume is a new feature exclusive to Xbox Series X and S consoles, which suspends a game directly into storage, similarly to how a suspended app works on your smartphone. In this state, the game is effectively frozen and is available for use almost instantly once you revisit it.

You can move seamlessly between your games after a few brief seconds.

The Xbox One has a similar feature, but it only works for one game at a time, and it also could cause instability in certain games. By comparison, Quick Resume feels far more robust, taking all of the work out of developers' hands. Although, at least as of writing (we are on pre-release software after all), it seems some older past-gen games aren't yet compatible. More up to date games work flawlessly, though.

Quick Resume can store around 4-6 games, depending on how large and complex they are. As of writing, there's no way to manage which games are stored in the "Quick Resume" feature. It would be nice if one day we could get some kind of task switcher, similar to what we get on smartphones. Or even lock certain games into Quick Resume, to ensure that they're always ready. And hey, maybe those features are coming, we're still using pre-release software on our Xbox Series X preview unit.

Even though we're on pre-release software, the functionality works exactly as intended. You can move seamlessly between your games after a few brief seconds of a splash screen.

Helping some games more than others

I've had to re-train myself to stop force-closing games on the Xbox Series X. When reviewing games for Windows Central or otherwise, I've run into the issue time and time again. The Xbox One's game resume feature would create some form of instability in the game when it loaded back in, so I just got into the habit of force closing games. Instead, the Xbox Series X is changing how I log out of games, to ensure I'm ready to game on as soon as I finish work.

Monster Hunter: World is one very noteworthy game that benefits from the Xbox Series X.

Monster Hunter: World is one very noteworthy game that benefits from the Xbox Series X. It benefits from a performance standpoint, due to its unlocked frame rate going from around 30-35 FPS to 50-60 FPS without a patch. However, the way the game is designed also makes it a great candidate for Quick Resume.

Unlike Destiny and some other online multiplayer games that boot you out of the game when your presence times out on their servers, Monster Hunter: World simply reverts back into "Offline Mode," meaning I can leave my hunter essentially logged out and ready to boot up a mission and reconnect to a session after using Quick Resume. I've been using Minecraft Dungeons this way as well, just logging my guy out at the mission table ready to rock.

Quick Resume is just another nice feature that makes it hard to go back to the previous gen. I'd definitely like to see some features that let us manage which games are currently sitting in a Quick Resume state in the future. Though, the current implementation is a solid foundation for what is already one of my favorite features on the console.

The Xbox Series X is here. Sort of. While we have a final hardware unit of the coming-soon new game console from Microsoft , our hands-on experience to date is with a handful of backwards-looking features and technical improvements to how games load.

That means no impressions -- yet -- of next-gen games running at 4K on the Xbox Series X . Instead we got to try a selection of previously released games running in backwards compatibility mode and got to play with the improved loading times and a new feature called Quick Resume , which is frankly one of the most impressive things we've seen in game hardware in some time.

CNET's Jeff Bakalar and GameSpot's Michael Higham both got to test out these new features on Xbox Series X hardware and spoke about their experiences in the accompanying video.

"I kinda slept on that a little bit," Jeff says about the Quick Resume feature. "Now, having played a bunch of games with Quick Resume, right now, for me, this is the sort of game-changing feature of Series X."

Michael was impressed with the load times from the new NVMe SSD. "Now [Xbox Series X] has caught up to something gaming PCs have had for a while," he says. "So no more doom-scrolling on the Twitter timeline while you're waiting for a game to load."

Here are Jeff and Mike's main takeaways:

• The console has run nearly silently so far, although these older games aren't exactly taxing the hardware
• Loading times are much faster than the Xbox One X (Microsoft's high-end version of the Xbox One). That includes both initial boot-up, loading saves and transitioning between sections of a game. 
• In an unscientific test, loading a Red Dead Redemption 2 save took around two minutes on an Xbox One X and about 30 seconds on the Xbox Series X. 
• Quick Resume feels like a game-changer. You can jump between games in about 10 seconds and Mike had four different games running at once. Games resume in the exact state you left them in, no reloading saves or returning to menu screens required. 
• The new controller is very similar, but benefits from a better grip surface on the back, an 8-way d-pad, and is a tiny bit smaller. And, it's got a USB-C port.

Xbox Series X is getting a powerful Quick Resume upgrade

One of the Xbox Series X's best feature is getting an upgrade

Update: Microsoft just updated Quick Resume , letting you pin two games to Quick Resume, keeping them active no matter what happens in the interim

Xbox Series X’s Quick Resume feature is fantastic, letting you pick up exactly where you left off without load times getting in the way. But it looks like there’s an update on the way, which will make Quick Resume even better.

Microsoft is now testing a feature that will allow two games to be kept in a Quick Resume state permanently. That way you don’t have to pick between some of your favorite games, just because you want to beat all the pesky loading screens.

The feature was mentioned in the release notes for the latest Xbox Update Preview for the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring. However, Xbox Insider had to clarify that this particular feature isn’t ready, and its inclusion in the release notes was an error.

Hey Alpha Skip-Ahead #XboxInsiders, sorry for the confusion but it looks like the new feature won't be available with today's update, but will be coming to you with a future update. Keep an eye out on the release notes for when the feature will be available. February 11, 2022

As a result the notes have been edited to remove any mention of the new Quick Resume. However, people were able to get a glimpse of what’s to come sometime in the near future (via The Gamer ).

"Users on Xbox Series X|S consoles can now keep up to two games in Quick Resume no matter what other games are launched. These games will only drop out of Quick Resume if the user manually removes it or if a game is updated," a brief description explained. 

While the Xbox Series X allows you to have three games in their suspended state right now, this new update is still a big deal. Because two games will stay in their Quick Resume state no matter what other games you decide to play in the interim.

Quick Resume is one of the standout features on the Xbox Series X and Series S . Because, let’s face it, loading times are the worst — even if the internal SSD makes load times shorter than previous console generations. 

It’s also something that Sony has failed to replicate on the PS5 so far, and in the past we’ve noted that Quick Resume is miles ahead of the PS5’s ‘Switcher’ feature. And Quick Resume is switched on by default, so you don’t have to go hunting through the settings to take advantage. 

As great as Quick Resume has been so far, this is one of many updates Microsoft has pushed for the feature since the Xbox Series X and S consoles launched. The fact that more updates are coming can only be a good thing.

In true Persona fashion, Persona 3 Reload: Episode Aigis culminates in an all-out boss fight against a negative entity known as Erebus. According to Fuuka, your foe is an amalgamation of humanity's worst qualities. Its attacks and various forms reflect this, regularly inflicting status ailments on your party to whittle morale and deal devastating blows.

It's no secret P3R's Episode Aigis DLC is chock-full of tough bosses to take down. In the Abyss of Time alone, you'll also find yourself in a double battle against the Avenger Knight and Death Castle , who make much beefier opponents than their common counterparts. However, Erebus reigns king in this realm with no distinct weaknesses and a host of resistances to withstand even your most powerful moves and Personas. You'll need heavy-handed party members and a strategy to oust the boss for good.

Affinities & Resistances Change With The Final Boss' Three Forms

Erebus's form will change during the fight in Episode Aigis . With each stage showcased by YouTuber Defh above, you can expect a set of attacks and alternative resistances to deal with, forcing you to adapt with the Personas at your disposal. This is simple enough to plan for, but the final boss has no obvious weaknesses. With this in mind, you can rely on neutral damage with your hardest hitters and P3R's strongest Personas to avoid resists and take it out.

TheGamer compiled an exhaustive list of all attacks, moves, and passive skills Erebus can use to its advantage. The boss will lean into any abilities it can to shake up your defense, inflicting status ailments and, at times, temporarily overcoming your party's resistances . Here's a breakdown of moves to expect during the boss fight:

All Erebus Affinities & Resistances In P3R: Episode Aigis

As mentioned, Episode Aigis ' final boss, Erebus, doesn't have any true weaknesses to exploit and comes equipped with a slew of resistances in its various forms. However, the boss is especially vulnerable when it's downed , during which all elemental types are neutral. This presents a clear opening to do as much damage as you can.

You'll deal the most damage to Erebus when it's downed. To make this happen, you'll need to successfully stop the boss from charging its Primal Darkness entirely. Focus on your most effective moves during the three-turn charging window to find an opening.

In the meantime, you'll need to decide which attacks and personas are best to use in its standard form while it's charging Primal Darkness with Dark Embrace. Here's a look at the attack types Erebus resists in each form:

Best Teammates & Personas To Use Throughout

Mitsuru, Junpei, and Metis make excellent offensive party members during the fight against Erebus in P3R's Episode Aigis DLC. Mitsuru is well-equipped to deal damage throughout the battle, and she can even nullify the boss' resistance to Ice with Ice Break. Similarly, thanks to his High Counter, Junpei makes an excellent pick for physical offense and defense. Both he and Metis have access to Vorpal Blade as well, though Metis is better able to serve as a Magic alternative here. Finally, Yukari and Koromaru are solid picks for support , with Amrita Shower and Debiliate proving especially helpful.

As for your Personas, you can fuse P3R's Helel and Chi You for offense or support options. Helel's Salvation can heal the team entirely as needed, with Morning Star offering a damage-based attack option. Chi You is also able to deal heavy physical damage with a Primal Force and Charge combo, but Resist Ailments really comes in handy to combat any status ailments coming your way.

Set Your Strategy In Motion

Going into the boss fight, it's best to level the playing field with a setup before Erebus uses Dark Embrace . In the meantime, the boss will resort to status ailment moves like Evil Smile and Tentarafoo to shake your team. This is a good time for Yukari to use Amrita Shower to remedy any effects as you work on dealing physical damage with Junpei.

If you've opted for Koromaru or another party member instead of Yukari, ensure you have Me Patra Gems or a Persona with access to Amrita Shower ready to deal with status ailments moving forward.

When Erebus uses Dark Embrace to begin charging its Primal Darkness for the next three turns, switch to using Mitsuru's Magic Skills . During this time, the boss is still able to deal significant damage, so you'll need to focus on using effective attacks with its narrowed resistances in mind. For the best results, use a Theurgy to get Erebus into its downed state for a short time.

While Erebus is in a weakened state, this is your opening to use your heaviest hitters. Remember: Erebus is susceptible to all attack types when downed , so moves that weren't effective before will now deal average damage. However, if you don't manage to prevent a full charge in three turns, the boss won't be downed, and it will launch its Primal Darkness attack instead. Erebus will resume its standard form following the attack and restart the cycle.

The final boss fight in Persona 3 Reload: Episode Aigis is an excellent time to use any helpful items you've saved. Don't be stingy, and focus on dealing as much damage as you can. Continue to alternate strategies according to Erebus' state to bring the enemy down for good.
