My Childhood Friend Essay

Memories of my childhood still linger on my mind. I remember my friends and the manner in which I interacted with a number of them. Childhood was all about making friends and playing games together. This was a sign of love among children, and our parents were proud and happy to see us that way.

Meet Warren

Despite having several friends, there is one in particular who I clearly recall because of the great friendship that we had built together. Warren is my childhood friend. We have been neighbors since we were young, and we continue to be friends today.

a childhood friend essay

Our friendship began with our parents who were friends first. We spent time together when they did. Eventually, I began to see Warren more as a brother. He was a short, neat boy with brown eyes and brown skin. His warm and caring personality is what made him wonderful inside and out.

Despite the fact that we lived about a mile from each other at some point, we continued to be inseparable. Our day would begin with both of us doing our assigned chores at home. After I’m done with mine, I would take my bike and ride to Warren’s house.

We would then walk to the nearby school in our town. The school had an entertainment program for the children during the mid-year period. Our usual routine at the school would begin with strolling around the track field. We’ll then go on to do a few laps, gradually increasing the pace until we were running a few miles around the track.

Afterward, we would go inside and do our warm-ups, then our usual workouts. Part of our warm-up was swimming in the Olympic-size pool. We would hone our free-form, butterfly stroke, breaststroke, and our diving techniques.

Tired from our long day at the field, we would go to the sauna room and unwind and relax for some time. Before heading home, we would take a hot shower to freshen up and re-energize for the walk home.

Through good and bad

While Warren and I were best friends, our times together were not all happy times. In the third grade, I remember having an argument with him that lasted for a week. We were in the same class too, which made running into each other every morning quite awkward.

a childhood friend essay

All throughout elementary school and middle school we have had similar fights. One of them was over a friend named Jackie, who we both liked.  We made the mistake of keeping it from each other, and when we found each other out, we were so upset that we almost ended our friendship. Thankfully, we found a way to get back on track. Jackie may no longer be our friend, but our friendship remained intact.

As my earliest childhood friend, Warren saw me in my most difficult moments. One of my not-so-pleasant childhood memories was witnessing my parents have a big fight. I remember going over to Warren’s house crying. He just listened and patted me on the shoulder. My childhood best friend comforted me right then and there, assuring me that all will be well.

Find Your Warren

Warren is certainly one of my most memorable friends. He had a great personality and was fun to be with. I can only hope that I meet more people like him in the future, as friends like him are hard to friend.

One of the most fateful moments in life is to find someone in your younger years to share life with. Even in our sunset years, we will always look back at the childhood friends who made the beginning of our lives more fun, enjoyable and fulfilling.

I don’t know who that person is for you, but when you find your “Warren,” hold on to him and keep him in your life. In this increasingly modern world, we need a community of good friends to get through life’s different seasons. I hope that your childhood friend continues to be connected to you today and that you will find ways to nurture the friendship even from afar.

Friends are what make life so exciting and unforgettable. I hope that my sharing of my experiences with Warren has inspired you to revisit your childhood friend memories and brought back happy feelings.

If you are lucky enough to still be friends with your childhood friend, make every moment count! If not, it’s not too late to reconnect. Social media is so good at helping you find people. Maximize it and look for those childhood friends! Those precious relationships are worth revisiting. Perhaps you can meet again and celebrate all the ways that you have grown into better people. Bring those great relationships in the future and keep doing life together.

Short Essay On Childhood Memories With Best Friend

My best memories of being a kid mostly involve my best friend. We went to the same school and attended the same kids’ parties. We also liked similar things: sports, working out, and unwinding at the school sauna.

My childhood life is filled with memories of my pal Gary, who I consider to be almost like a brother to me. Our parents introduced us when they took us to daycare on that very first day. Right from the get-go, Gary had a warm personality that made me feel instantly comfortable with him.

a childhood friend essay

We instantly connected when we found out that we were into swimming and running. As soon as we discovered this about each other, we quickly decided that every Saturday, we would go to the school gym and do all these. Our moms took us when it was raining hard, and they would take plenty of photos of us having fun.

Even after parting ways, Gary and I would talk on the phone about the latest updates on our favorite swim and track teams. We also had many friends with who we would share these interests. Sometimes they would join us in our Saturday sessions.

We would also compare house chores. Every Saturday morning before heading out to see each other, Gary and I would go through a list of tasks from our moms. We would wash dishes, wipe kitchen counters, or even help our parents cook and do laundry. It was fun knowing that we were doing these together.

Gary and I are all grown up now. Although we ended up attending different high schools, we continued to stay in touch and fondly recall our happiest memories as kids. Thankfully, they were when we spent time together. I’m so thankful.

My favorite childhood friend, Emily, is someone I hold dear to my heart. Our friendship blossomed in the quaint neighborhood park where our families often spent weekends. I vividly remember the first time we met; she was playing on the swings, her laughter as carefree as the breeze. It wasn't long before we became inseparable, sharing countless adventures together.

Our afternoons were often spent exploring the local library, delving into the magical worlds of storybooks. Emily had a vivid imagination, and together we embarked on imaginary quests, each more thrilling than the last. Her creativity knew no bounds, and it was infectious. We also shared a love for outdoor activities, especially cycling through the winding paths in our neighborhood. It felt like freedom, the wind in our hair and the sun on our faces as we raced each other, laughing all the way.

What made Emily so special was her genuine kindness and empathy. She had this incredible ability to listen, truly listen, and understand. Whenever I faced any challenges, she was my confidante, offering both solace and wise counsel. Her compassion extended beyond just our friendship; she was always the first to lend a helping hand to others in need.

This bond, forged in the innocence of childhood, was built on a foundation of shared interests, mutual respect, and heartfelt conversations. Emily, with her spirited personality and empathetic nature, left an indelible mark on my life. She taught me the value of true friendship, the kind that uplifts and inspires. Even now, as I reminisce about those carefree days, I'm grateful for the memories we created, the laughter we shared, and the lessons we learned together.

I hope my kids have ‘forever friends’—like the ones I have

two childhood friends hanging out

ProjectUA/Shutterstock

Forever friends have known us for decades—and they're still here.

By Christine Organ October 6, 2022

A few weeks ago, I went out for a rare mid-week dinner with a couple of childhood friends . We don’t get together all that often (we’re all busy working moms , after all), though we do chat in a group text often (usually when one of us wants to spill tea). It doesn’t matter how long it’s been since we’ve last seen each other. When we spend time together, it’s like no time has passed. This is the beauty of forever friends.

Since my oldest son started high school last year, his friendships have evolved. He’s made new friends. He’s strengthened friendships with other kids he’s known for years. Some friends have moved away, others go to different schools. As I watch these friendships grow and change , I often wonder:  which of these kids will be his forever friends?

Related: A love letter to the mom friends I always text—but rarely see

Some of my closest friendships are with people I’ve known since I was a teen or even younger. I have really good friends who I met after becoming a mom or in recent years, but there is something special about childhood friendships that last.

Friendship— all friendships, whether old friends or new friends—are an amazing thing. In fact, research suggests that friendships can actually help us live longer and more meaningful lives. Some friendships come and go, some last for a season. We have old friends and new friends, work friends and “parents of our kids’ friends” friends. But there is something really beautiful about forever friends.

Forever friends are the ones who have known us for decades. The friends who’ve known us since way back when, and who also know that we aren’t the same person we were back then.

Forever friends know our secrets. They know about the weird family traditions we had as a child and they know why we can’t talk about the summer of ’98 without cringing, crying or belly-laughing.

Forever friends know all our stories—or most of them—and they love us anyway.

Forever friends know what we thought our lives would be like when we were young and naïve. They remind us of the things that really mattered to us once upon a time, and they urge us to let go of the romantic ideals that were never meant to be.

Forever friends know what kind of relationship we have with our parents and our siblings —and more important,  why . Forever friends understand why we still cry at the end of “Sandlot” and how we got that scar on the back of our knee.

Forever friends know our nicknames. All of them.

Forever friends know all our stories—or most of them—and they love us anyway. They know the good, the bad and the really ugly. They know who we were and who we wanted to be and who we actually are.

Forever friends listen to us vent when life feels really hard, and they jump up and down with us when life is unbelievably good. They usually know just what to say, even if it’s nothing at all.

I don’t know what makes some friendships last longer than others, but I think it boils down to two things: consistent effort and a little bit of magic.

Forever friends are there when our aging parents gets sick . They come to funerals and show up with casseroles. They know what we want to say even if we don’t say it.

Forever friends come in all kinds of flavors. Sometimes we lost touch for a while and then made our way back to each other. Other times we’ve been thick as thieves for decades. But they all have one thing in common—the comfort that comes from knowing that this person will always be in our corner. That they’ll always be part of our life. That our friendship—though it might change—will be forever.

Related: To my friends who had kids before me: I am sorry I didn’t know

I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what makes a friendship last . My husband and I both have a handful of friends who are “forever friends”—some of them live nearby, others live far away—and I want this same thing for my own children. I don’t know what makes some friendships last longer than others, but I think it boils down to two things: consistent effort and a little bit of magic.

A few well-kept secrets doesn’t hurt either.
