Inciting Event: The three-way tie-breaker race for the Piston Cup, taking place in California, is announced.

First Plot Point: The Thing Lightning McQueen Wants (the Piston Cup) is dragged out of his immediate reach when he is accidentally marooned—and arrested—in the forgotten rural town of Radiator Springs. If he’d had his way, he would  never  have ventured out of his glittering Normal World, and his immediate reaction to the First Plot Point is to form the plot goal of getting his bumper back to Normal as fast as he can rev his engine. But in this new world, all the rules are different. The Lie-spawned behavior he’s been liberally rewarded for previously gets him into deeper and deeper trouble in Radiator Springs.

First Pinch Point: Lightning McQueen receives tools from just about every character he meets in Radiator Springs. Mater and Miss Sally talk about how wonderful Radiator Springs is, with its friendly neighbors and leisurely pace of living. But he resists. He scares off their customers by trying to escape his community service sentence. Lightning tries to move toward the Thing He Wants and away from Radiator Springs by fixing the road as fast as possible, and, as a result, Doc “punishes” him by challenging him to race—and beating him. Throughout the First Half of the Second Act, the townsfolk keep showing him a world where people care for each other. The Truth is right in front of Lightning’s face, but he keeps resisting it, insisting it’s something that doesn’t even appeal to him.

Midpoint: Lightning discovers that Doc is the famous Hudson Hornet racecar who won an unprecedented three Piston Cups in his day.

Second Pinch Point: When Lightning sees Doc out racing by himself, Doc explains his bitterness about racing and accuses Lightning of selfishness and an inability to change.

Third Plot Point: Right in the midst of his newfound friendship with the townsfolk and possibly love with Miss Sally, Lightning’s Third Plot Point is thrust upon him. Doubting the sincerity of Lightning’s newfound virtues, Doc has called in the media. Lightning is given the very escape route he’s been craving all along. His ability to get to his tie-breaker race in time is practically gift wrapped for him. But suddenly faced with the realization that the race may mean giving the peace and happiness he’s found in Radiator Springs, Lightning has to be dragged away.

Climax: Lightning embraces his friends and their importance in his life when he joyfully accepts their help as his new pit crew. He races with renewed purpose, making up lost ground.

Climactic Moment: Even though Lightning’s attitude toward the townsfolk from Radiator Springs is demonstrably different from how he treated them in the beginning, he still hasn’t actually  done  anything to prove his devotion to the new Truth. He gets his chance when rival racecar Chick Hicks acts selfishly (just as Lightning would have at the beginning of the movie) and wrecks the respected old racecar The King. Lightning, just about to win the race, sees what’s happened and realizes helping The King is more important than winning the race. In a lovely Climactic Moment, he slams on the brakes, just before the finish line, allowing Chick to win. He then circles back to help The King finish his race.

Resolution: Lightning backs up his shocking climactic action by turning down the coveted Dinoco sponsor in order to stand by the Rust-eze sponsors he formerly disdained. He then returns to make Radiator Springs his new training headquarters, breathing new life into his friends’ dying town, which also allows him to simultaneously pursue his dreams without living in the fast lane. He fulfills his promise (and proves he can be trusted) by securing Mater a ride on the Dinoco helicopter, then cements his relationship with Miss Sally. He blatantly offers the answer to his thematic question when he tells The King why he sacrificed the Piston Cup: “This grumpy old racecar I know once told me somethin’. It’s just an empty cup.”

Notes: The Third Plot Point is especially worth nothing here. Objectively, Lightning’s “rescue” and return to the race is a completely good turn of events. But the story understands that the Third Plot Point needs to be an emotional low point. The “good” thing that happens to Lightning feels like a tragedy in light of the new friendships he’s made. Hence, the story gets its emotional punch it needs even in the midst of a plot point that could very easily have missed the needed ebb in the emotional pacing here.

I wouldn't have thought that even in animation a 1951 Hudson Hornet could look simultaneously like itself and like Paul Newman , but you will witness that feat, and others, in "Cars." This is the new animated feature by John Lasseter (" Toy Story ," " A Bug's Life "); it tells a bright and cheery story, and then has a little something profound lurking around the edges. In this case, it's a sense of loss.

What have we lost? Its hero, a racing car named Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson ), has just lost a big race, and then one day on the highway he goes astray, and rolls into the forgotten hamlet of Radiator Springs, in Carburetor County. This was a happenin' town, back when Route 66 was the way to get from Chicago to L.A., passing through Flagstaff, Arizona, and don't forget Winona. But now the interstates and time itself have passed it by, and the town slumbers on, a memory of an earlier America.

Lightning's dream is to win the Piston Cup, the grand prix of American racing. He's on his way to the race when he gets lost, and then, more humiliating, impounded. Once released, he meets the population of Radiator Springs, led by Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), who may be an old-timer but probably knows something about Hudsons that Lightning doesn't: Because of their "step-down design," they had a lower center of gravity than the Big 3 models of its time and won stock car races by making tighter turns.

Other citizens include Mater (rhymes with tow-mater) the Tow Truck (voice of Larry the Cable Guy), Sally the sexy Porsche ( Bonnie Hunt ), Fillmore the hippie VW bug ( George Carlin ), and Sarge the veteran Jeep ( Paul Dooley ). Tractors serve as the cows of Radiator Springs, and even chew their cud, although what that cud consists of I'm not sure. Fan belts, maybe.

The message in "Cars" is simplicity itself: Life was better in the old days, when it revolved around small towns where everybody knew each other, and around small highways like Route 66, where you made new friends, sometimes even between Flagstaff and Winona. This older America has long been much-beloved by Hollywood, and apparently it survives in Radiator Springs as sort of a time capsule.

Doc Hudson, it turns out, was a famous race car in his day. That leads up to a race in which the vet and the kid face off, although how that race ends I would not dream of revealing. What I will reveal, with regret, is that the movie lacks a single Studebaker. The 1950s Studebakers are much beloved by all period movies, because they so clearly signal their period, from the classic Raymond Loewy-designed models to the Golden Hawk, which left Corvettes and T-Birds eating its dust. Maybe there's no Hawk in Radiator Springs because then Doc Hudson would lose his bragging rights.

The movie is great to look at and a lot of fun, but somehow lacks the extra push of the other Pixar films. Maybe that's because there's less at stake here, and no child-surrogate to identify with. I wonder if the movie's primary audience, which skews young, will much care about the 1950s and its cars. Maybe they will. Of all decades, the 1950s seems to have the most staying power; like Archie and Jughead, the decade stays forever young, perhaps because that's when modern teenagers were invented.

Cars is a film that tells about the life of a racer named Lightning McQueen who has big ambitions to win the prestigious racing event, the Piston Cup. Apart from being an entertainment medium, Film Cars has moral values and character education in it. The aim of this research are to (1) analyze the movie Cars to find out the moral values and character education contained in it, (2) also want to know the relevance of the moral values and character education of class X students to the film Cars. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method, with mobile phones, laptop as research instruments, and materials such as, journals, and books as references. The aim of this study is to determine the reflections of the values covered in the curriculum program of the social studies courses in the animated film scripts through the eyes of children. To this end the qualitative research method was adopted and phenomenology technique is used in the study. The participants of the study are twenty-seven seventh grade students attending a public school during the school year of 2018-2019 spring semester. In order to reveal their perceptions about the values covered in the curriculum program of the Social Studies course creative writing activity was used. The animation movie scenarios developed by the participants constitute the documents of the research. These documents were analysed through the content analysis. The findings indicate that twelve values covered in the curriculum program of the course were used by the participants as core values: scientific literacy, savings, solidarity, peace, respect, honesty, freedom, equality, justice, helpfulness and patriotism. Of them the most frequent used value is found to be the value of scientific literacy. As a result of the analysis of the data, it was found that the basic values in the scenarios developed by the participants are associated with all the values covered in the educational program of Social Studies course, but they mostly prefer the value of freedom.

The aim of this research is to find out types of moral values in an Indonesian children’s cartoon movie entitled Si Juki the Movie: Panitia Hari Akhir. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative. The kinds of data are transcriptions related to conversations and actions from the seven characters in this movie. Observation sheet is used as the instrument to collect the data. The observation sheets consist of two tables, the first one is of moral values from conversations and the second one is of moral values from actions. This study aims to describe the teacher's efforts in developing moral values-based character. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The technique of collecting data in this research is by using observation, interview, and documentation. This research focused on moral value of the movie. The methodology of this research is descriptive qualitative method. This study aims to found the moral values of Shawshank Redemption movie. Documentation method was used to collect the data and descriptive analysis technique to analyze the data. Make it specific:  Avoid vague or overly broad statements. Be precise in what you're arguing.

Make it debatable:  Your thesis should invite discussion and disagreement. Avoid stating the obvious.

Make it relevant:  Ensure that your thesis directly addresses the research question and the film's themes or elements.

"In Christopher Nolan's 'Inception,' the use of dreams as a narrative device serves to blur the line between reality and perception, challenging conventional notions of truth and subjectivity."

Examples to Support the Thesis:

Dreams as a Narrative Device

Throughout 'Inception,' the characters enter various dream levels, each with its own set of rules and physics. Nolan uses this complex narrative structure to keep the audience engaged and constantly questioning what is real.

The manipulation of time within dreams adds another layer of complexity to the narrative. Time moves differently at each dream level, leading to intricate storytelling that challenges traditional linear storytelling.

Blurring Reality and Perception

The film consistently blurs the boundaries between dreams and reality, making it difficult for the characters and the audience to distinguish between them. This intentional ambiguity creates a sense of unease and intrigue.

The use of the spinning top as a totem to determine reality in the film's closing scene encapsulates the theme of perception versus reality. The spinning top symbolizes the characters' struggle to discern the truth.

Challenging Conventional Notions of Truth and Subjectivity

You need a good thesis statement for your essay but are having trouble getting started. You may have heard that your thesis needs to be specific and arguable, but still wonder what this really means.

Let’s look at some examples. Imagine you’re writing about John Hughes’s film  Sixteen Candles  (1984).

You take a first pass at writing a thesis:

Sixteen Candles  is a romantic comedy about high school cliques.

Is this a strong thesis statement? Not yet, but it’s a good start. You’ve focused on a topic–high school cliques–which is a smart move because you’ve settled on one of many possible angles. But the claim is weak because it’s not yet arguable. Intelligent people would generally agree with this statement—so there’s no real “news” for your reader.  You want your thesis to say something surprising and debatable.   If your thesis doesn’t go beyond summarizing your source, it’s not arguable.

The key words in the thesis statement are “romantic comedy” and “high school cliques.” One way to sharpen the claim is to start asking questions .

For example, how does the film represent high school cliques in a surprising or complex way?  How does the film reinforce stereotypes about high school groups and how does it undermine them? Or why does the film challenge our expectations about romantic comedies by focusing on high school cliques? If you can answer one of those questions (or others of your own), you’ll have a strong thesis.

Tip : Asking “how” or “why” questions will help you refine your thesis, making it more arguable and interesting to your readers.

Take 2. You revise the thesis. Is it strong now?

Sixteen Candles is a romantic comedy criticizing the divisiveness created by high school cliques.

You’re getting closer. You’re starting to take a stance by arguing that the film identifies “divisiveness” as a problem and criticizes it, but your readers will want to know how this plays out and why it’s important. Right now, the thesis still sounds bland – not risky enough to be genuinely contentious.

Tip : Keep raising questions that test your ideas. And ask yourself the “so what” question. Why is your thesis interesting or important?

Take 3. Let’s try again. How about this version?

Although the film Sixteen Candles appears to reinforce stereotypes about high school cliques, it undermines them in important ways, questioning its viewers’ assumptions about what’s normal.

Bingo! This thesis statement is pretty strong. It challenges an obvious interpretation of the movie (that it just reinforces stereotypes), offering a new and more complex reading in its place. We also have a sense of why this argument is important. The film’s larger goal, we learn, is to question what we think we understand about normalcy.

What’s a Strong Thesis?

As we’ve just seen, a strong thesis statement crystallizes your paper’s argument and, most importantly, argues a debatable point .

This means two things. It goes beyond merely summarizing or describing to stake out an interpretation or position that’s not obvious, and others could challenge for good reasons. It’s also arguable in the literal sense that it can be argued , or supported through a thoughtful analysis of your sources. If your argument lacks evidence, readers will think your thesis statement is an opinion or belief as opposed to an argument.

Exercises for Drafting an Arguable Thesis

A good thesis will be focused on your object of study (as opposed to making a big claim about the world) and will introduce the key words guiding your analysis. To get started, you might experiment with some of these “mad libs.” They’re thinking exercises that will help propel you toward an arguable thesis.

By examining __________________ [topic/approach], we can see _____________________[thesis—the claim that’s surprising], which is important because ___________________________.

“ By examining Sixteen Candles through the lens of Georg Simmel’s writings on fashion, we can see that the protagonist’s interest in fashion as an expression of her conflicted desire to be seen as both unique and accepted by the group. This is important because the film offers its viewers a glimpse into the ambivalent yearnings of middle class youth in the 1980s.

Although readers might assume _________________ [the commonplace idea you’re challenging], I argue that _________________________ [your surprising claim].

Although viewers might assume the romantic comedy Sixteen Candles is merely entertaining, I believe its message is political. The film uses the romance between Samantha, a middle-class sophomore, and Jake, an affluent senior, to reinforce the fantasy that anyone can become wealthy and successful with enough cunning and persistence.

Still Having Trouble? Let’s Back Up…

It helps to understand why readers value the arguable thesis. What larger purpose does it serve? Your readers will bring a set of expectations to your essay. The better you can anticipate the expectations of your readers, the better you’ll be able to persuade them to entertain seeing things your way.

Academic readers (and readers more generally) read to learn something new. They want to see the writer challenge commonplaces—either everyday assumptions about your object of study or truisms in the scholarly literature. In other words, academic readers want to be surprised so that their thinking shifts or at least becomes more complex by the time they finish reading your essay. Good essays problematize what we think we know and offer an alternative explanation in its place. They leave their reader with a fresh perspective on a problem.

We all bring important past experiences and beliefs to our interpretations of texts, objects, and problems. You can harness these observational powers to engage critically with what you are studying. The key is to be alert to what strikes you as strange, problematic, paradoxical, or puzzling about your object of study. If you can articulate this and a claim in response, you’re well on your way to formulating an arguable thesis in your introduction.

How do I set up a “problem” and an arguable thesis in response?

All good writing has a purpose or motive for existing. Your thesis is your surprising response to this problem or motive. This is why it seldom makes sense to start a writing project by articulating the thesis. The first step is to articulate the question or problem your paper addresses.

Here are some possible ways to introduce a conceptual problem in your paper’s introduction.

1. Challenge a commonplace interpretation (or your own first impressions).

How are readers likely to interpret this source or issue? What might intelligent readers think at first glance? (Or, if you’ve been given secondary sources or have been asked to conduct research to locate secondary sources, what do other writers or scholars assume is true or important about your primary source or issue?)

What does this commonplace interpretation leave out, overlook, or under-emphasize?

2. Help your reader see the complexity of your topic. 

Identify and describe for your reader a paradox, puzzle, or contradiction in your primary source(s).

What larger questions does this paradox or contradiction raise for you and your readers?

3. If your assignment asks you to do research, piggyback off another scholar’s reserach.

Summarize for your reader another scholar’s argument about your topic, primary source, or case study and tell your reader why this claim is interesting.

Now explain how you will extend this scholar’s argument to explore an issue or case study that the scholar doesn’t address fully.

4. If your assignment asks you to do research, identify a gap in another scholar’s or a group of scholars’ research.

Summarize for your reader another scholar’s argument about your topic, primary source, or case study and tell your reader why this claim is interesting. Or, summarize how scholars in the field tend to approach your topic.

Next, explain what important aspect this scholarly representation misses or distorts. Introduce your particular approach to your topic and its value.

5. If your assignment asks you to do research, bring in a new lens for investigating your case study or problem.

Summarize for your reader how a scholar or group of scholars has approached your topic.

Introduce a theoretical source (possibly from another discipline) and explain how it helps you address this issue from a new and productive angle.

Testing Your Thesis

You can test your thesis statement’s arguability by asking the following questions:

If so, try some of the exercises above to articulate your paper’s conceptual problem or question.

If not, return to your sources and practice the exercises above.

If it’s about the world, revise it so that it focuses on your primary source or case study. Remember you need solid evidence to support your thesis.

🚦 Film Analysis Essay Types

Since a film analysis essay resembles literature analysis, it makes sense that there are several ways to do it. Its types are not limited to the ones described here. Moreover, you are free to combine the approaches in your essay as well. Since your writing reflects your own opinion, there is no universal way to do it.

  • Semiotic analysis . If you’re using this approach, you are expected to interpret the film’s symbolism. You should look for any signs that may have a hidden meaning. Often, they reveal some character’s features. To make the task more manageable, you can try to find the objects or concepts that appear on the screen multiple times. What is the context they appear in? It might lead you to the hidden meaning of the symbols.
  • Narrative structure analysis . This type is quite similar to a typical literature guide. It includes looking into the film’s themes, plot, and motives. The analysis aims to identify three main elements: setup, confrontation, and resolution. You should find out whether the film follows this structure and what effect it creates. It will make the narrative structure analysis essay if you write about the theme and characters’ motivations as well.
  • Contextual analysis . Here, you would need to expand your perspective. Instead of focusing on inner elements, the contextual analysis looks at the time and place of the film’s creation. However, don’t forget that your task is not only to identify them but also to explain their importance. There are so many interconnected pieces of this puzzle: the light to create the mood, the props to show off characters’ personalities, messages hidden in the song lyrics.

Film analysis types.

To write an effective film analysis essay, it is important to follow specific format requirements that include the following:

  • Standard essay structure. Just as with any essay, your analysis should consist of an introduction with a strong thesis statement, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The main body usually includes a summary and an analysis of the movie’s elements.
  • Present tense for events in the film. Use the present tense when describing everything that happens in the movie. This way, you can make smooth transitions between describing action and dialogue. It will also improve the overall narrative flow.
  • Proper formatting of the film’s title. Don’t enclose the movie’s title in quotation marks; instead, italicize it. In addition, use the title case : that is, capitalize all major words.
  • Proper use of the characters’ names. When you mention a film character for the first time, name the actor portraying them. After that, it is enough to write only the character’s name.
  • In-text citations. Use in-text citations when describing certain scenes or shots from the movie. Format them according to your chosen citation style. If you use direct quotes, include the time-stamp range instead of page numbers. Here’s how it looks in the MLA format: (Smith 0:11:24–0:12:35).

Even though film analysis is similar to the literary one, you might still feel confused with where to begin. No need to worry; there are only a few additional steps you need to consider during the writing process.

Starting Your Film Analysis Essay

There are several things you need to do before you start writing your film analysis paper. First and foremost, you have to watch the movie. Even if you have seen it a hundred times, you need to watch it again to make a good film analysis essay.

Note that you might be given an essay topic or have to think of it by yourself. If you are free to choose a topic for your film analysis essay, reading some critical reviews before you watch the film might be a good idea. By doing this in advance, you will already know what to look for when watching the movie.

In the process of watching, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Consider your impression of the movie
  • Enumerate memorable details
  • Try to interpret the movie message in your way
  • Search for the proof of your ideas (quotes from the film)
  • Make comments on the plot, settings, and characters
  • Draw parallels between the movie you are reviewing and some other movies

Making a Film Analysis Essay Outline

Once you have watched and possibly re-watched your assigned or chosen movie from an analytical point of view, you will need to create a movie analysis essay outline . The task is pretty straightforward: the outline can look just as if you were working on a literary analysis or an article analysis.

  • Introduction : This includes the basics of the movie, including the title, director, and the date of release. You should also present the central theme or ideas in the movie and your thesis statement .
  • Summary : This is where you take the time to present an overview of the primary concepts in the movie, including the five Ws (who, what, when, where, and why)—don’t forget how!—as well as anything you wish to discuss that relates to the point of view, style, and structure.
  • Analysis : This is the body of the essay and includes your critical analysis of the movie, why you did or did not like it, and any supporting material from the film to support your views. It would help if you also discussed whether the director and writer of the movie achieved the goal they set out to achieve.
  • Conclusion: This is where you can state your thesis again and provide a summary of the primary concepts in a new and more convincing manner, making a case for your analysis. You can also include a call-to-action that will invite the reader to watch the movie or avoid it entirely.

Writing & Editing Your Film Analysis Essay

We have already mentioned that there are differences between literary analysis and film analysis. They become especially important when one starts writing their film analysis essay.

First of all, the evidence you include to support the arguments is not the same. Instead of quoting the text, you might need to describe the audiovisual elements.

However, the practice of describing the events is similar in both types. You should always introduce a particular sequence in the present tense. If you want to use a piece of a dialogue between more than two film characters, you can use block quotes. However, since there are different ways to do it, confirm with your supervisor.

For your convenience, you might as well use the format of the script, for which you don’t have to use quotation marks:

ELSA: But she won’t remember I have powers?

KING: It’s for the best.

Finally, to show off your proficiency in the subject, look at the big picture. Instead of just presenting the main elements in your analysis, point out their significance. Describe the effect they make on the overall impression form the film. Moreover, you can dig deeper and suggest the reasons why such elements were used in a particular scene to show your expertise.

Introductory paragraph (Thesis)

I am a movie fanatic. When friends want to know what picture won the Oscar in 1980 or who played the police chief in Jaws, they ask me. My friends, though, have stopped asking me if I want to go out to the movies. The problems in getting to the theater, the theater itself, and the behavior of some patrons are all reasons why I often wait for a movie to show up on TV.

First supporting paragraph

First of all, just getting to the theater presents difficulties. Leaving a home equipped with a TV and a video recorder isn’t an attractive idea on a humid, cold, or rainy night. Even if the weather cooperates, there is still a thirty-minute drive to the theater down a congested highway, followed by the hassle of looking for a parking space. And then there are the lines. After hooking yourself to the end of a human chain, you worry about whether there will be enough tickets, whether you will get seats together, and whether many people will sneak into the line ahead of you.

Second supporting paragraph

Once you have made it to the box office and gotten your tickets, you are confronted with the problems of the theater itself. If you are in one of the run-down older theaters, you must adjust to the musty smell of seldom-cleaned carpets. Escaped springs lurk in the faded plush or cracked leather seats, and half the seats you sit in seem loose or tilted so that you sit at a strange angle. The newer twin and quad theaters offer their own problems. Sitting in an area only one-quarter the size of a regular theater, moviegoers often have to put up with the sound of the movie next door. This is especially jarring when the other movie involves racing cars or a karate war and you are trying to enjoy a quiet love story. And whether the theater is old or new, it will have floors that seem to be coated with rubber cement. By the end of a movie, shoes almost have to be pried off the floor because they have become sealed to a deadly compound of spilled soda, hardening bubble gum, and crushed Ju-Jubes.

Third supporting paragraph

Some of the patrons are even more of a problem than the theater itself. Little kids race up and down the aisles, usually in giggling packs. Teenagers try to impress their friends by talking back to the screen, whistling, and making what they consider to be hilarious noises. Adults act as if they were at home in their own living rooms and comment loudly on the ages of the stars or why movies aren’t as good anymore. And people of all ages crinkle candy wrappers, stick gum on their seats, and drop popcorn tubs or cups of crushed ice and soda on the floor. They also cough and burp, squirm endlessly in their seats, file out for repeated trips to the rest rooms or concession stand, and elbow you out of the armrest on either side of your seat.

Concluding paragraph

After arriving home from the movies one night, I decided that I was not going to be a moviegoer anymore. I was tired of the problems involved in getting to the movies and dealing with the theater itself and some of the patrons. The next day I arranged to have cable TV service installed in my home. I may now see movies a bit later than other people, but I’ll be more relaxed watching box office hits in the comfort of my own living room.

Keywords: Attitude, Appraisal, Movie. Appraisal is a new expansion and innovation of interpersonal meta-function, which more focused on studies the emotional expression and social interaction. It is used for negotiating social relationship, by telling the listeners or readers how people feel about things or about the person himself. Likewise with movies, there is an interaction between speakers and listeners, namely the film actor and the audience. Apart from just watching, the audience can learn what the actor wants to convey by understanding the actor words, emotions, or behavior. The purposes of this study were to find out the types of appraisal attitude in the Cars (2006) movie and the kinds of language functions of those attitudes. This research applied descriptive qualitative approach and used library research as the design. The researcher used the script of Lightning McQueen’s dialogue and the original movie as the primary source, then used documents or artifact technique in collecting the data. The researcher also used the Klaus Krippendorff content analysis method to analyze the data. The result of this study showed that they are three types of attitudes expressed in the Lightning McQueen’s dialogue, they are affect, judgement and appreciation. From those attitudes the researcher found 41 data, that consist of 10 data of affect, 3 data of judgement, and 28 data of appreciation. The researcher also found seven types of language functions in Lightning McQueen’s attitudes, consist of regulatory, interactional, representational, personal, imaginative, instrumental and heuristic function. From those 41 data attitudes, it has found 1 affect identified as regulatory function, 1 affect and 8 appreciations as interactional function, 1 judgement and 1 appreciation as representational function, 6 affects, 2 judgements and 13 appreciations as personal function, 1 affect as imaginative function, 1 appreciation as instrumental function, and 1 appreciation as heuristic function. From the results of this research, it can be seen that appraisal theory can be used and found in movies, as well as the categorization of language function. This research shows that learners can learn the interpersonal meaning, or the meanings of a language, through many things, such as the words of actors, and can apply language theories in it. This research can be an example for learners to learn deeper interpersonal meaning or appraisal itself, and can also be an example for further researchers in making literature research or other appraisal analysis research. This research can enrich literature studies, especially in appraisal theory, as well as film research.

The film Taxi Driver by Martin Scorsese was released in 1976 and was received positively by both the public and critics. The director received the Palme d’Or award for his work, and the cast was honored with a number of nominations. The screenwriter, Paul Schroeder, managed to create a unique and, at the same time, a typical atmosphere of neo-noir, the characteristic of the New York community of the 1970s. The main role of Robert De Niro confirmed the actor’s talent due to the eccentricity of his character, and the man received the New York Film Critics Circle award. The narrative of the movie, its themes, and the ways of displaying directorial ideas make it possible to immerse oneself in a real story recreated in great detail. It may seem unusual that Taxi Driver was aimed at an American audience, but in the end, the film received worldwide recognition. Nevertheless, on the example of the New York of that time, Scorsese was able to demonstrate global issues and trends, in particular, loneliness and the inability to overcome social barriers in rapidly developing class inequality.

The story of the film is told dynamically, and the intrigue grows increasingly, without plot jumps and twists. Travis, the main character, is introduced as a taxi driver with an eccentric character and ambiguous thinking, which allows interpreting the events of the movie ambivalently. For instance, the fact that Travis keeps a diary emphasizes his loneliness, although he is constantly among people and can communicate much ( Taxi Driver ). Scorsese introduces the public to Travis as a teenager, despite his age. The main character’s inclinations towards radicalism, denial and opposition to society help form a clear view of him as a person who is not mature enough to make sound reasoning. No special visual and sound effects are used to convey an alarm. Nevertheless, due to intense dialogues, it seems that the taxi driver is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. His communication with himself in the mirror reveals a depth of his loneliness and mental imbalance ( Taxi Driver ). The detachment and coldness of New Yorkers are one of the main topics that make it possible to concentrate on the image of Travis and his experiences.

If Travis’s personality could be described unambiguously, Taxi Driver would not be a cinematic masterpiece. Social and class contradictions in the film are reflected in the most realistic manner. One of the storylines includes the complex dynamics of the main character’s personal attitude to the senator, ranging from sympathy to the desire to kill ( Taxi Driver ). The senator himself is a demagogue and is ready to take any measures to maintain his political position. Another character is Betsy, a beautiful girl to whom the man has a liking, but in the end, their different social status and views become the cause of failure. Finally, the image of the 12-year-old prostitute Iris is presented in contrast to Betsy, and Travis’s desire to take care of this naive girl emphasizes his loneliness. The goals of the story are achieved by demonstrating the typical difficulties of an insignificant person in a big city. Ultimately, the film ends with a scene in which Travis is driving a car once again ( Taxi Driver ). This indicates the director’s desire to show the practical inability of many people to get rid of their experiences and fears.

Regarding the practical means of influencing viewers, special techniques are utilized, for instance, constant noise accompaniment characterizing the bustle of the city, as well as the realism of different characters’ images. Dull colors are diluted with bright tones intentionally to provide an additional effect, and an example of a scene with blood on the face of the main character may be given ( Taxi Driver ). Camera work also deserves attention, and this aspect can be considered one of the most important components that allow achieving impacts on the public. Michael Chapman, the photography director, shows the streets of New York, plays with a focus on the background of glowing signs, and, at the same time, chooses specific camera angles to emphasize Travis’ loneliness ( Taxi Driver ). There are many medium close shots and waist shots. In the scene where Travis sits next to the corpse, a high-angle shot is applied to demonstrate the whole mise-en-scene ( Taxi Driver ). The palette is predominantly light with prevailing yellow and red tones. All these techniques are designed to show how remote people can be from one another even when living in a metropolis like New York.

The loneliness of an ordinary person and his inability to resist social challenges are the key topics raised by Scorsese in the film in question. However, the director does not concentrate on one idea and puts deep meaning in many scenes, thereby developing the topic of class difficulties. This movie deserves attention because it is not only filled with bright and charismatic characters but also makes it possible to realize how unpredictable the life of one person can be.
