The University of Waikato Summer Research Scholarship Programme was established in 2006 to support and enhance research at the University of Waikato by providing promising students the opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of research. Scholarships are offered in various disciplines and support up to ten-weeks of full-time research during C Trimester (November to February). The number of Scholarships offered in any one year will be determined by the availability of funding and supervision.
The University of Waikato Summer Research Scholarships support students to embark on a research experience under the Summer Research Scholarship Programme. The Programme is particularly for those considering further study at the University of Waikato and is designed to assist students in the development of their research skills while providing the opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of research.

The scholarship includes the following:
$2000 on commencement of the project;
$2,000 four weeks through the term of the scholarship;
$2,000 eight weeks through the term of the scholarship (conditional on a positive interim report from the supervisor); and
$2,000 on submission of the final research poster which must be received by the poster due date outlined in the Terms and Conditions of the Summer Research Scholarship Programme (see also Clause 6).
To be eligible for consideration applicants must:
- In the year of application be enrolled at a New Zealand University or other tertiary provider within New Zealand (e.g. Te P?kenga)1; and
- Have not yet undertaken postgraduate research (i.e., have not begun Masters by Research or a doctorate programme). Applicants concurrently enrolled in taught papers and a thesis (593 or 594) may apply providing they have not yet commenced their master’s thesis.
Selection of applicants is based on:
- Expertise in at least one of the specific areas in which the research is being offered in a given year;
- Academic merit. The Grade Point Average (GPA) will be calculated on the candidate’s most recent 240 points of study (i.e. the equivalent of two years’ full-time enrolment); and
Other considerations as outlined in the project advertisements (e.g., willingness to be based at the location of research).
Preference may be given to applicants who have discussed the project with the supervisor before applying and who intend to continue with postgraduate study at the University of Waikato.
