Maximizing Results: Should You Study Before or After Your Workout?

Maximizing Results: Should You Study Before or After Your Workout?

Home » Workout » Maximizing Results: Should You Study Before or After Your Workout?

When it comes to maximizing our time and efforts, many of us are faced with the dilemma of whether we should study before or after our workout. Both activities require focus and energy, so it’s important to understand how they can impact each other. In this article, we will explore the benefits and drawbacks of studying before and after a workout, helping you make an informed decision that suits your individual needs and goals.

Study Before Workout or Workout Before Study: Which is More Effective?

Studying before workout.

One argument for studying before a workout is that it can help prime your brain for learning. By engaging in mental activities before hitting the gym, you may experience improved focus, concentration, and memory retention. Additionally, some studies suggest that exercising immediately after studying can enhance your ability to recall information, as physical activity increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain.

However, it’s important to consider your energy levels. If you are mentally drained from studying, you may not have the physical stamina to push yourself during your workout. It’s crucial to strike a balance and ensure that you have enough energy for both activities.

Working Out Before Study

On the other hand, working out before studying can have its advantages as well. Physical exercise has been shown to boost mood, reduce stress, and increase alertness. By starting your day with a workout, you can enhance your overall well-being and mental state, creating an optimal environment for learning.

Additionally, exercising releases endorphins, which can improve your mood and motivation. This can help you approach your studies with a positive mindset and increased drive, potentially leading to better performance and productivity.

The Ultimate Guide to Maximizing Your Fitness and Learning Potential

1. listen to your body.

Regardless of whether you choose to study before or after your workout, it’s important to listen to your body. Pay attention to how you feel both mentally and physically. If you find that studying after a workout leaves you exhausted and unable to focus, consider shifting your routine. Experiment with different schedules to find what works best for you.

2. Plan Your Schedule Wisely

To maximize your results, create a well-structured schedule that allows for both studying and working out. Consider your energy levels throughout the day and identify times when you are most alert and focused. This will help you determine the ideal order of activities.

3. Incorporate Active Studying

If you choose to study before your workout, consider incorporating active studying techniques. Take breaks during your study sessions to engage in physical activity, such as stretching or quick exercises. This can help keep your energy levels up and enhance your cognitive performance.

4. Fuel Your Body Properly

Regardless of when you choose to study or work out, it’s important to fuel your body properly. Eat a balanced diet that includes nutritious foods to provide the energy and nutrients needed for both mental and physical activities. Stay hydrated and prioritize rest and recovery to avoid burnout.

Morning Routine Dilemma: Should I Study First or Workout?

The morning is a popular time to engage in both studying and working out. To optimize your morning routine, consider the following tips:

1. Start with a Warm-up

Before diving into intense studying or workouts, start your morning with a gentle warm-up. This can include light stretching, meditation, or a short walk. It will help wake up your body and mind, preparing them for the upcoming activities.

2. Prioritize Your Goals

Determine your priorities and align your morning routine accordingly. If your main focus is fitness, consider working out first and then dedicating time to studying. If academic pursuits take precedence, study first and then engage in physical exercise. Remember, everyone’s priorities are different, so choose what works best for you.

Maximize Workout Results: Expert Tips for Optimal Fitness Gains

To maximize your workout results, regardless of when you choose to study, consider the following expert tips:

1. Set Specific Goals

Define clear, measurable goals for both your fitness and academic endeavors. This will help keep you motivated and focused on achieving success in both areas.

2. Vary Your Workouts

To prevent boredom and plateauing, vary your workouts regularly. Incorporate a combination of cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and flexibility exercises to achieve a well-rounded fitness routine.

3. Stay Consistent

Consistency is key to seeing results, both in your fitness and studying. Establish a regular schedule and stick to it, making sure to allocate dedicated time for both activities.

4. Seek Professional Guidance

Consider seeking guidance from professionals in both fitness and academics. A personal trainer can help design an effective workout plan, while tutors or mentors can provide valuable insights and strategies for studying effectively.

Hit the Gym after Studying to Boost Recall

Like other things that enhance alertness, exercise may help cement new facts in mind

By Tori Rodriguez

Join Our Community of Science Lovers!

Regular exercise boosts brain health, and a fit brain is generally able to learn, think and remember better. But a few recent studies offer an additional exercise-related tip: time your workouts for just after a study session, and you might better retain the information you just learned. In a variety of experiments, people who biked, did leg presses or even simply squeezed a handgrip shortly after or before learning did better on tests of recall in the hours, days or weeks that followed.

Experts think the crucial component is physical arousal. Exercise excites the body in much the same way an emotional experience does—and emotional memories are well known to be the most long lasting. The researchers caution, however, that at most exercise can have a supportive effect—the important thing is to study well first.

Studying and passing your classes can be difficult, and finding effective ways to study may seem impossible. Recent studies have found strong links between cognitive function, memory recall, and brain function and exercise, which points to the benefits of adding physical activity to your study routine. If you are looking for a way to boost your studying, try incorporating daily exercise into your routine.

Connecting Exercise With Studying

Step 1 Exercise just before you study.

  • Doing aerobic activity gets blood, oxygen, and nutrients to your brain, which helps your brain function better. [2] X Trustworthy Source Harvard Medical School Harvard Medical School's Educational Site for the Public Go to source

Step 2 Try light exercise while you study.

  • These studies found that vigorous exercise while studying may hurt recall because your brain is focused on the workout instead of the information.
  • To try this, take your textbook or notes to the gym. Use the stationary bike while you study for at least half an hour, making sure to keep the intensity light and gentle. You can also use an elliptical, treadmill, or stairclimber. [4] X Research source

Step 3 Go to the gym right after studying.

  • Go for a walk or even lift weights after you study to help your brain stay active so your studying can pay off.

Step 4 Take a walk around the library.

  • You can also do this if you are studying in your dorm or a coffee shop.
  • Taking a break helps refresh yourself and gets blood flowing to the brain, which can help you think and remember better.

Step 5 Exercise at your desk.

  • Do some chair squats at your desk. Stand up from your chair, then squat down without sitting down. Hover just above the chair for about 10 seconds. Repeat this 20 times.
  • Try wall sitting. Lean against the wall and slowly lower yourself into a squat position, using the wall to support your back. Hold for as long as you can, or do 20 sets while holding for 10 seconds each. You may also wish to lift one leg as you hold the squat for an extra challenge.
  • Use resistance bands while you sit there and study. Put one in each hand and pull on them for an upper body workout. You can also try holding hand weights and doing bicep curls while studying.

Putting Together An Exercise Plan

Step 1 Determine an appropriate amount of exercise.

  • Adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, or a combination of these. [10] X Trustworthy Source World Health Organization Health information and news provided by the World Health Organization Go to source
  • Adolescents should get at least 60 minutes of moderate or vigorous physical activity each day. [11] X Trustworthy Source Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Main public health institute for the US, run by the Dept. of Health and Human Services Go to source

Step 2 Choose an aerobic exercise.

  • Moderate physical activity includes brisk walking at three miles per hour or faster or bicycling slower than 10 miles per hour. You can also play doubles tennis, go ballroom dancing, or do general gardening.
  • Vigorous intensity workouts include race walking, jogging, or running or cycling faster than 10 miles per hour. You can also swim laps, play singles tennis, do aerobic dancing, jump rope, or hike with a heavy backpack or uphill. [13] X Trustworthy Source Mental Health Foundation UK charity working towards good mental health for all. Go to source
  • Many gym classes provide excellent opportunities for vigorous and moderate exercise.
  • Any aerobic activity should be performed for at least 10 minutes at a time to gain brain-boosting benefits. You should also spread it out throughout the week to keep your brain focused and sharp.

Step 3 Make time for your workout.

  • Sit down and list all your commitments, activities, and study hours. Don't forget to list sleep times, meal times, and time for other things, like showering. Look for places you can incorporate exercise.
  • Don't forget to count daily exercise. If you walk 10 or more minutes to class or work, this counts as aerobic physical activity. If you can start walking to class, make that one of your changes.
  • Choose something that you believe you will enjoy and that can easily be placed into your schedule. If you have trouble finding time to workout, consider going out for a 30 minute jog or dancing around your room for half an hour.
  • Breaking up exercises into smaller increments, such as three 10-minute fast-paced walks, can offer brain-boosting benefits if you struggle fitting exercise into your day. [15] X Trustworthy Source Cleveland Clinic Educational website from one of the world's leading hospitals Go to source

Step 4 Focus on consistency.

  • If you have class three times a week and study on those days, try to go for at least a 30 minute walk or jog before you go back to your room to study. If you go to school every day for eight hours, spend half an hour to an hour after school lets out doing something physical, then study after you get home. [17] X Trustworthy Source Harvard Medical School Harvard Medical School's Educational Site for the Public Go to source

Step 5 Make the exercise an enjoyable experience.

  • Listen to music while exercising. Numerous studies have linked music to stress relief and the reduction of anxiety. While out for your walk, listen to music that either relaxes you or makes you happy. [18] X Research source
  • Exercise with a friend. This can do two things at once: get physical activity into your day while letting you socialize, which can help boost your mood and reduce stress. Understanding the Importance of Combining Exercise With Studying

Step 1 Know that exercise boosts mental function.

  • Physical activity also helps boost memory and recall, which is important when studying.
  • Aerobic exercise helps pump blood to your brain, which helps give it oxygen and nutrients that it needs to work and process information.

Step 2 Exercise to reduce stress.

  • Regular aerobic exercise has been found to help reduce tension, stabilize your mood, and reduce stress.
  • Just five minutes of cardio can help start to reduce anxiety. [22] X Research source

Step 3 Incorporate exercise to improve energy.

  • Regular exercise boosts energy levels.
  • Since exercise reduces stress, it helps reduce fatigue associated with elevated stress levels.
  • Exercise boosts your ability to sleep. Adequate rest helps you feel more alert and allows your brain to function better as you study. [24] X Research source

It’s well known that regular exercise boosts brain health, and a fit brain is generally able to learn, think and remember better. However, during GCSE / A Level exam season, many students abandon regular exercise or choose other ways of unwinding from revision. For those students that want to maintain their exercise routine, the most common question is whether it’s better to exercise before or after studying.

Here’s a quick summary of the latest research on why and when students should incorporate exercise into their revision schedule.

Timing of Exercise

Although many individuals will have their own personal preferences on when to exercise, recent research provides some interesting insights as to the impact of exercise timing n recall. The key finding was that timing a workout for a few hours after a study session is likely to result in better retention of the information just learnt. Whilst not yet fully understood, exercise seems to increase the production of biochemical in the body and brain related to mental function. Experts think the crucial component is physical response. Exercise energises the body in much the same way an emotional experience does – emotional memories are well known to be the longest lasting. The researchers caution, however, that at most exercise can have a supportive effect – the important thing is to study well first. Find out more details on the research findings by reading the NY Times article here .

Build Revision Concentration

In addition to the benefits for mental function, developing a good exercise routine helps build stronger “will-power”, helping students to return to their studies at times when they are tired or concentration is failing. For example, you probably know from experience that students find it really difficult to do homework or study after a school exam/test. Instead, they want to unwind as their will-power and energy has been depleted by the exam. Exercising helps by building endurance, stamina as well as boosting energy levels.

Exam Stress Levels

Exercise also helps with stress/anxiety and makes you happier. When you do a physically-demanding endurance exercise (running/swimming-yes, weightlifting-no), a large amount of endorphins are released by your pituitary gland. These block sensations of pain and produce feelings of euphoria, making you feel happier and more relaxed. In terms of the type of exercise, it doesn’t have to be high intensity; research has shown that it’s regular exercise that matters and that more gentle activities, such as yoga or a brisk walk, can also be beneficial.

As GCSE / A Level revision and exam experts, we know that students benefit from regular exercise both academically and emotionally. Hopefully, you are now better placed to explain those benefits to your son or daughter and can encourage them to incorporate exercise into their daily or weekly study routine.

Can You Use Pre-workout for Studying? See What Experts Say

Benedict Ang, CPT, PN1-NC

Is there a better alternative for students to stay mentally focused when studying?

Since students are always on the lookout for ways to stay sharp, I teamed up with college-age gym-goers and consulted our dietitian to see if pre-workout supplements are better for all-night studying.

Before trying it out yourself, keep reading to discover the results of our investigation.

  • Pre-workout supplements can be used for studying as they contain caffeine, which boosts focus and energy levels.
  • Some cognitive enhancers in pre-workouts that help you study include creatine, L-theanine, and L-tyrosine.
  • Johns Hopkins University study showed participants taking 200 mg of caffeine had improved memory, better identifying images than those who didn't.
  • I believe moderation is key. While pre-workouts can offer a boost, it's essential to ensure they don't disrupt sleep or cause jitters.

Yes, pre-workouts can help with studying, and the best pre-workout supplements for that, contain natural ingredients like caffeine to boost energy levels and focus.

These supplements affect how our brain operates. They help us process information, focus, relax and sleep. That's why many students resort to caffeine-rich beverages during study sessions.

They also heighten alertness and cognitive functions, according to a National Library of Medicine report [ 1 ].

Nootropics, also known as “smart drugs” or cognitive enhancers, help you study and are popular ingredients in pre-workout supplements for focus .

They might effectively improve memory, thinking, and other mental functions, promoting mental focus during exercise [ 2 ].

But other components provide similar effects:

Coffee beans on a kitchen table

The National Library of Medicine mentions that people often use coffee for its caffeine, especially for all-nighters. I've used caffeine for long days. It activates the central nervous system, keeping me alert and energized [ 3 ].

Johns Hopkins University found caffeine boosts memory. Participants who took 200 mg caffeine tablets were better at identifying images than those who didn't [ 4 ].

Caffeine is chemically similar to adenosine but is an adenosine receptor antagonist.

Caffeine's effectiveness lies in its interaction with adenosine, a sleep-promoting chemical in the body. As adenosine levels rise, the brain gets ready to rest. Caffeine blocks these signals, stimulating the brain instead [ 5 ].

This leads to mixed signals of rest and activity in the brain, causing the pituitary gland to release adrenaline, triggering the fight-or-flight response, increasing alertness and energy.

Related Article : Caffeine-free Pre-workouts

This non-essential amino acid is often found in pre-workout supplements because it promotes improved performance, especially in muscles.

We now know that creatine may reduce mental fatigue and is an effective cognitive enhancer [ 6 ].

L-Theanine ingredient

Healthline explains that L-theanine is an amino acid that promotes relaxation and increased focus and eases anxiety and stress. Combined with caffeine and creatine, it will significantly benefit studying [ 7 ].

This is another amino acid that potentially improves memory and thinking skills.

The body produces L-tyrosine, obtained through a diet by consuming dairy, meat, eggs, fish, and beans [ 8 ]. Boosting memory means you retain the information you need going into an exam.

“L-theanine is an amino acid found in tea that can increase feelings of calmness and may be linked to increased creativity. Its effectiveness is even greater when combined with caffeine.” - Erica Julson, MS, RDN, CLT

Adaptogens, found in some pre-workouts, can potentially support cognitive functions and stress resilience.

There are three adaptogens that you should consider:

  • Adaptogen basics : These natural herbs help the body resist physical and mental stressors.
  • Rhodiola rosea : Known to reduce mental fatigue and improve cognitive functions.
  • Ashwagandha : This herb can enhance memory and cognitive functions.

A person having a good sleep

Pre-workouts boost energy, stamina, muscle protein synthesis, and recovery, leading to more intense workouts. Intense exercise can promote better sleep, resulting in improved focus and concentration.

Key performance-enhancing ingredients in pre-workouts include:

  • Beta-alanine
  • Acetyl-L-carnitine
  • L-citrulline-malate
  • Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
  • Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs)

Using pre-workouts on workout days can enhance performance, and on non-workout days, they offer mental benefits.

However, avoid late-day consumption, especially of those containing caffeine, as caffeine needs around 6 hours to metabolize, and late intake could disrupt sleep.

A bloated man due to taking women's vitamins

Pre-workout can affect each person differently, which the college students in our trial definitely confirmed. The group found the boost to energy levels quite appealing, but some reported feelings of jitteriness, likely caused by caffeine [ 8 ].

Others reported minor digestive issues and some bloating. Creatine can undoubtedly be the culprit here, along with caffeine and sodium bicarbonate.

Will Pre-workout Keep You Awake?

Yes, pre-workout will keep you awake as the caffeine content in most of these supplements equals at least two or three cups of coffee.

Can You Take a Pre-workout before an Exam?

Yes, you can take a pre-workout before an exam, as taking a supplement with high caffeine content may increase alertness and improve focus due to caffeine’s ability to enhance brain function.

Can you study and exercise at the same time?

Despite its drawbacks, multitasking might be advantageous, at least when it comes to exercising and studying. In fact, research indicates that a 15-minute workout might increase brain activity.

Despite its drawbacks, multitasking might be advantageous, at least when it comes to exercising and studying. In fact, scientific evidence points to a possible increase in brain activity following a 15-minute workout. A recent study found that exercising right away after mastering a new motor skill can increase your capacity to retain that motor skill over the long term. The study was published in a July 2018 paper in NeuroImage. More intriguingly, the researchers discovered proof that a single 15-minute cardio session can improve your brain’s capacity and effectiveness for developing the neural networks necessary for learning.

Let’s look more closely at five methods for improving brain function through exercise.

According to a recent study published in the British Journal of Psychology, aerobic exercise may increase brain power to the point where it allows your brain to form connections and learn new information. The study’s findings show that aerobic exercise not only enhances your memory and thinking skills, but that standing up instead of sitting can also increase your mental capacity.

Although afternoon workouts may improve your performance because you will have eaten a meal or two by the time you start, morning workouts are ideal for burning fat and losing weight. According to Hackney, blood sugar levels increase whenever you eat.

The most important thing is to fit in as much exercise as you can whenever you can, because finding the time to exercise can be difficult. However, if you want to get the most out of your workouts, you might want to consider going to the gym first thing in the morning.

Here is what the science has to say about the best time of day to exercise and what to expect if you choose a later workout.

Exercise is most effective at releasing stored fat when done first thing in the morning, especially when done on an empty stomach. According to Anthony Hackney, a professor in the department of exercise and sport science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, this is largely due to the body’s hormonal composition in the morning being configured to support that goal.

Even a brief break can help relieve the tight and uncomfortable muscles that can develop from prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, using a computer, or reading books. This can improve circulation, sharpen the mind, and relieve the muscles’ inevitable bad posture.

Utilizing this quick exercise routine, you can raise your heart rate and burn calories while exerting little sweat. Additionally, by stopping to move your body for at least 5 minutes every hour, you can maintain your fitness goals despite your busiest times of the year.

However, research has shown that learning is most effective between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., when the brain is in an acquisition mode. However, the hours between 4 and 7 in the morning are the least productive for learning.

Being a student means that school is an integral part of your daily life. To find the best time for you to study, it takes time and effort. Some individuals find that studying in the mornings is preferable, while others find that studying in the evenings or at night helps them concentrate better.

Peak performance is hardwired into our DNA, claims the science of “good timing” (also called chronobiology 2). Our biological clock, an internal clock ingrained in our brains since childhood, actually aids in determining the best time for studying. Timing is crucial if you want to consistently create and perform at your best, even though new findings show that it may not be everything.

Nevertheless, research has shown that learning is most effective between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., when the brain is in an acquisition mode. However, the hours between 4 and 7 in the morning are the least productive for learning. While there isn’t really a single best time of day to study, let’s look at the advantages of studying in the morning versus other times of the day.

Is morning or night study preferable? .

Is morning or night study preferable?

Your physical performance might increase because, according to research, most people perform their best physically later in the day. The evening is superior to the morning for muscle strength, flexibility, power output, and endurance.

The ideal time of day to exercise is a topic of constant discussion. I have long heard that working out first thing in the morning is best, but some people claim that a workout at night is more beneficial. When I regularly worked in an office, I was one of those evening exercisers, but I’ve since switched to late morning workouts. Is one period of time truly superior to another, and if so, why?

No matter when you exercise, there are numerous health advantages to moving frequently, such as enhancing heart health, building muscle, or even enhancing endurance. The majority of people choose to work out when it fits their schedule the best, so they frequently have no control over what time of day they choose to be active.

However, studies have shown that the time of day you choose to work out can have a variety of effects on your workout. Here’s how to use the most recent data to decide what’s best for you:

Which exercise is most beneficial for studying?

Exercises that are done in as little as 20 minutes before studying or as a study break can, according to research, improve concentration. Blood flow from your body to your brain can be improved by engaging in vigorous activities like aerobics, jogging, or brisk walking.

Optimal health is a result of regular exercise. Almost everyone is aware of this fact. Students in college, especially those enrolled in distance education, believe that yoga and other forms of meditation and exercise are essential for maintaining their physical and mental well-being. Their way of life, however, tells a different tale when it comes to actually maintaining a workout schedule.

The majority of online learners engage in “risky” study habits. Not exactly the healthiest way to study (and live), mindless eating while spending hours in front of a computer screen Major health risks like eye strain, headaches, and stress can result from working all day at a desk. It may even cause memory issues!

To promote both physical and mental health, health professionals strongly advise students to take exercise breaks. However, this is where the issue lies: Fitting in exercise routines can be very difficult for online college students. While attempting to obtain their degree, they balance their studies with other obligations. They struggle mightily to organize their daily to-do list, let alone go to the gym or adhere to a rigid workout schedule, given all the tasks that demand their attention (sometimes all at once!).

Is it acceptable to stay up all night studying?

Never think of staying up late as advantageous or positive; always try to avoid it. Pulling an all-nighter is generally not a good idea, even when it might seem to be beneficial in certain situations, such as when you need the extra time for work or study.

Anyone who has had a deadline to meet, whether it be for a project, a test in school, or a crucial business presentation, has probably thought about forgoing sleep in order to spend more time organizing. The most extreme example of this sacrifice is pulling an all-nighter, or going an entire evening without sleep.

An all-nighter may at first appear to be beneficial by giving more time to work or study. In actuality, though, staying up all night is bad for your ability to think clearly, your mood, and your physical health. Pulling an all-nighter rarely results in better performance the following day because of these effects.

An all-nighter is when you don’t go to bed at your usual time and stay up all night long. Total sleep deprivation is the term used in the field of sleep science to describe this type of prolonged period without sleep.

One hour per subject will work well for a regular course, but proper time management and daily planning are essential for any competitive exam preparation. One should maintain regularity and adhere to the daily schedule. At least 6–7 hours of study time are required for competitive exams.

Training in the afternoon or evening will likely yield better results if your main goal is to increase your upper-body strength and power. And the Skidmore study demonstrates that women who exercise in the morning have better results in terms of fat loss. Try sleeping on it, preferably after your workout, if you’re still not sure.

According to science, there are two windows of time when the brain is most receptive to new information: 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

When is the best time to study? If you have a full-time job and a family, your answer might be, “Whenever I can!” However, if you have some flexibility, it’s useful to know that research indicates some times are better for studying and learning new information than others. Work smarter, not harder, by scheduling your study sessions for when your brain is most receptive to learning new information.

Chronobiology is a branch of biology that studies how time affects our bodies and brains, and it has roots in research on the best times to study. When we’re primed to do particular activities, it’s largely determined by our circadian rhythms—basically, the cyclical ways in which our bodies react to our environment and hormones. You may benefit from studying at a time when your body is at its best.

The brain is most receptive to new information between the hours of 10:00 am and 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm and 10:00 pm, according to science. The worst time to study is from 4:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m., so if you’re balancing other responsibilities while studying, it might be better to study later at night rather than earlier in the day.

Can I exercise twice a day while I study? .

Can I exercise twice a day while I study?

It is safe to exercise twice daily as long as you adhere to a well-structured program. You run the risk of suffering an injury if you don’t give yourself enough time to rest in between workouts. Working out twice per day also increases the risk of burnout.

As long as you stick to a structured program, working out twice a day is safe. A workout injury could result from not giving your body enough time to recover between sessions. Working out twice a day increases the risk of burnout. However, if you give yourself enough time to recover, eat a balanced diet with enough protein and calories, get enough rest, and stay hydrated, twice-daily workouts are completely safe.

Your muscles can be gradually built up and strengthened by going to the gym twice a day. Additionally, you are giving your body the instruction to grow and get stronger twice as often.

Cardio twice a day has a number of benefits. It has the benefit of promoting greater calorie burning than a single daily workout alone. This might hasten the process of losing weight.

Back to School, Back to the Gym: Fitness Tips for Students

Fitness Tips

Aug 10, 2023 • 9 min read

With summer coming to a close, we sadly must wave goodbye to carefree days and flexible gym schedules. It’s time to focus and improve your time management so you can stay on track toward your fitness goals. Take a look below at some back-to-school fitness tips to help you stick with a consistent school workout routine.

EFFECTS OF LOSING YOUR GYM ROUTINE

Pausing regular exercise can lead to a reduction in muscle strength, physical endurance and stamina. Building muscle and enhancing cardiovascular endurance demand considerable effort, time and perspiration. However, it takes significantly less time for these fitness achievements to diminish. The decrease in fitness level is highly individual and relies on numerous factors, including the nature of the exercise you were previously undertaking.

A break from strength training for 12 weeks can cause a significant decrease in muscle strength, as you’re no longer putting muscles under stress. After just two weeks of taking a break from your gym routine, the number of muscle fibers used for exercise can decrease by 13% as your body adjusts to the lower exertion level. Research has also shown that even cardiovascular fitness can establish a decrease after as little as 48 hours of stopping, but you would typically not feel those effects for at least two to three weeks.

Alongside the physical effects, interrupting your gym routine can have emotional and psychological implications. Many Members utilize their gym time as a form of stress relief , and achieving desired results serves as a motivator. Hence, when your workout routine lapses, you not only lose the stress relief but may also encounter a decline in motivation.

TIPS FOR HEADING BACK TO THE GYM

It’s okay to take occasional breaks from your gym routine, but it can be difficult to recommit to your fitness goals. Ideally, you could switch up your routine during the summer and find a place like EōS with an indoor pool or a cardio theater (MOV EōS Cinema) that helps you beat the heat and still get a great workout. Or, if you love being outside, check out the EōS Yard® Turf Functional Training Area to help you enjoy some fresh air during your routine. Once you’ve decided to head back to the gym, keep these tips in mind.

– SET REASONABLE EXPECTATIONS WHILE CHALLENGING YOURSELF

In your previous school workout routine , you may have had specific goals and increased those gradually based on your progress, but after a break from the gym, you may have to readjust your fitness goals as you get back into a regular workout schedule. Set goals that you can actually achieve and stay on track with.

It’s important to continue challenging yourself as you adjust to your new gym routine, but you’ll also need to pace yourself. Find a good starting point that’s challenging and work your way up from there. You may need to reduce the time, speed, intensity or weights at first to avoid injury and get back into your groove.

If you’re having trouble setting realistic fitness goals or getting back into the gym , talk to a Personal Trainer for a customized workout plan to get you back on track.

– RECOVERY TIME

Even when you’re easing back into a regular exercise routine, you still need to prioritize recovery time to let your muscles heal and to decrease the chance of injury. Whether you’re resting or focusing on active recovery, it should be built into your routine.

– TRY A NEW EXERCISE

Who says class is the only place to learn during the school year? Don’t be afraid to try something new. If you’ve always been a cardio lover, try strength training with dumbbells or kettlebells . If you’ve typically always used the strength machines, opt for free weights to see how they differ. Add some variety to your routine or try something completely new with one of the many Group Fitness Classes available at EōS .

– CREATE ACCOUNTABILITY

Working on your fitness and seeing results is challenging, as it should be. And it can be even more of a challenge to hold yourself accountable to get to the gym, put in the work and eat healthy meals that fuel your body . You may be the type of person that can commit to yourself and hold yourself accountable, but if not, enlist the help of a workout buddy or accountability partner that is trustworthy, supportive, and not afraid to give you a nudge in the right direction when you need it.

SHOULD I GO TO THE GYM BEFORE OR AFTER SCHOOL?

One of the best fitness tips for students is to make the gym work around your schedule. Taking a ton of night classes this semester? Start your day bright and early in the gym. Worried you’ll be too tired to go in the afternoon? Go before school starts. There are pros and cons to both.

If you go before school starts, you’ll get your school workout routine checked off your to-do list, and get after the day feeling fresh and accomplished. You won’t need to dread making time for the gym or skip any workouts because you’re overwhelmed with school or homework. You wake up early, get it done and will be able to focus on your academics.

Going to the gym before school can also be a great mood enhancer and reduce depression . Before class, you’ll start your day with a serotonin boost, setting the tone for your day ahead.

If you’re not a morning person or taking a few too many early classes, going to the gym after class is also a great alternative that can help reduce stress after a long day at school .

No matter which time works with your schedule – always stay consistent with your school workout routine and prioritize yourself. Studies suggest that students who work out before or after class have better grades and test scores. So you can get those grades and stay in shape!

TIME MANAGEMENT TIPS

One of the most challenging parts of committing to academic excellence and a consistent gym routine is time management. Let’s be honest: You have a ton on your plate. From balancing extracurricular activities, exams and homework – the last thing you want to do is put more stress on yourself. Here are a few easy tips for getting back in the gym during school.

1. PLAN YOUR WORKOUTS IN ADVANCE

Are you hitting your back and biceps or legs and glutes today? You should already know before you get to the gym. With a set school workout routine, you’ll walk through the doors ready to jump on machines, lift weights and take on every set in your pre-planned workout. Once you’re done, you can get to class and never skip a beat.

2. STICK TO A ROUTINE

A routine is vital for any busy student looking at getting back into the gym. Allocating time to the gym will help you reach your goals and will help you avoid making excuses for yourself.

For example, let’s say you want to be an early morning gymgoer. You wake up at 5am, grab a snack and head out the door by 5:30am to complete your workout before 7am. While this might sound daunting, this set morning routine will become second nature to you after a few weeks.

3. GO TO THE GYM WHEN IT’S LESS BUSY

The last thing you want to do after a long day in class is head to the gym when it’s busy. If all the machines you want to use are in use, you’ll feel stressed and overwhelmed when you walk into the gym.

To make your school workout routine work better with your schedule, consider going when it’s not as busy, like early morning, evenings after dinner or during your lunch break. This will ensure you can stick to your planned school gym routine and get your sesh done efficiently and quickly.

4. BREAK YOUR WORKOUTS INTO SMALLER SEGMENTS

If you don’t have time to dedicate an hour in the gym five days a week – that’s okay. Instead, set aside 30 or 45 minutes of your day to exercise. Maybe this means going for a 15-minute walk in the morning and doing a 20-minute lower body burnout before you end your day.

Make a schedule that serves you; so you don’t feel stressed trying to squeeze the gym into every routine.

WORKOUT IDEAS FOR BUSY STUDENTS

TREADMILL INTERVALS

Treadmill intervals are some of the most effective cardio workouts . They’re great for boosting your metabolism, burning calories and improving your stamina. The best part? You only need a good 20 minutes on the treadmill to feel the burn.

A WALKING PAD UNDER YOUR DESK
