Call for applicants: Three years Postdoctoral fellowship in Marketing at School of Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

Gothenburg is Sweden’s second largest city with around 600.000 inhabitants. It is a distinctly Scandinavian city, known for its nature and proximity to the sea, as well as for the likeable and liveable size of the city centre. For more information about our city, please refer to  https://visitsweden.com/where-to-go/southern-sweden/goteborg/

The School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, is hereby inviting candidates to apply for a postdoctoral fellowship in Marketing with an estimated start during 2024. This fellowship will be financed by a scholarship provided by the Department of Business Administration. The duration of the fellowship is three years (full-time), with a possibility of a three-year extension. The position could potentially be combined with teaching up to 30% of a full-time position, should the candidate wish.

The School of Business, Economics and Law, with its more than 3,700 full-time students, 470 employees, 160 international partner universities, provides a stimulating research environment. The School is accredited by EQUIS, AACSB, and AMBA, a so-called ‘triple-crown’ accreditation.

The Department of Business Administration is the largest department at the School of Business, Economics and Law, and conducts extensive research and is responsible for education programmes at first-cycle and second-cycle levels, as well as third-cycle education in the subject areas of Business Administration and Economic Geography. The Department has more than 140 employees and is divided into four sections: Industrial and Financial Management & Logistics, Management & Organisation, Marketing, and Accounting.

This postdoctoral fellowship is situated at the Marketing section, which comprises 4 full Professors, 5 Associate Professors, 6 Assistant Professors and 10 post doc researchers and PhD students. The research at the Marketing section is diverse, focusing on several different empirical and theoretical areas.

Subject description

The postdoctoral fellowship is focused specifically on  Consumer Privacy .  Over just a few years, search engines, social media, and other online actors, have gathered the data left behind by our activities that were once considered private, into vast databases that are often shared and public. These digital footprints hold information about who we are, what we think, and what we like; all highly valued in data-driven markets. Once created, this information can be easily replicated and sold across ecosystems. Unlike analogue data, digital data is also likely to persist for a long time, that may even persist after we have died. While the exact consequences of this erosion of consumer privacy are not yet clear, they are clearly of high societal importance.

Scholars within marketing and related fields are currently exploring how consumers make decisions regarding their privacy, consequences of privacy-related behaviors, the impact of development of artificial intelligence, and the role of government policies for improving consumer privacy.  A successful candidate should want to contribute to the development of knowledge in this field . While previous experience of research and publications within marketing is an important qualification, they do not necessarily have to be in the domain of consumer privacy. As the successful candidate will be part of a research team, ability to cooperate, forward looking research ambitions, and personal suitability are important qualifications for this position.

Qualifications

  • Applicants should hold a recent, or be close to finishing, a PhD in Marketing, or a related area. The degree will be considered recent if it has been passed within the last three years, however parental leave and other circumstances will be taken into account when assessing eligibility and should therefore be stated in the application.
  • Research potential is our key selection criterion for the advertised position. The successful candidate will be expected to carry out research suitable for publications on consumer privacy, and related topics, in highly ranked marketing journals with the support of other researchers at the department.
  • Knowledge about quantitative methods and experimental design is considered a good merit.
  • Ability to cooperate, personal suitability, and excellent knowledge of English are important qualifications.

Financial and practical information

The fellowship will be financed by an individual scholarship, which has been awarded to the School by the Browaldh foundation, intended to finance a suitable applicant chosen by the School for three years. You will not be employed by the University since the scholarship is awarded individually, however you will be located at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg and be a member of a research team. The scholarship is currently 460.000 SEK per year (tax free), and is intended to cover the equivalent of a (full-time) salary. The candidate also receives 100.000 SEK per year set to cover insurance costs and 50.000 SEK per year for expenses (travel and other costs) for the duration of three years. Upon the successful completion of these three years, there is a possibility to apply for an extension of another three years.

The position could potentially be combined with teaching up to 30% of a full-time position, should the candidate wish. Compensation for involvement in teaching will be in the form of salary and will be added on top of the individual scholarship. The successful candidate will be expected to start the fellowship in 2024 and will be expected to work at the Department of Business Administration in central Gothenburg.

Application procedure and closing date

Applications should be submitted to  [email protected]  no later than December 4, 2023.

The application should include the following documentation combined into one single file, preferably in the file format pdf:

  • Table of contents
  • Cover letter

Chromosomal inversions can shield adaptive combinations of alleles from recombination, facilitating evolutionary processes such as adaptation, sex chromosome evolution and speciation. However, inversions are not just passive vessels, inversions themselves evolve as they contain large swaths of the genome and may encompass many hundreds of genes. Critically, their large size (compared to smaller changes such as point mutations) means that their allelic content as well as their frequency evolves over time, something which is currently not well incorporated in evolutionary theory.

Students of closed university graduate from wlu program.

phd vacancies university of gothenburg

Photo by Derek Redd Glen Combs, a 1973 graduate of Alderson Broaddus, speaks to the latest graduating class of West Liberty University’s master’s program in physician assistant studies.

WEST LIBERTY — As the latest graduating class of West Liberty University’s master’s program in physician assistant studies walked the Kelly Theater stage to receive their degrees, none of them had imagined at the start of their studies they would be walking that stage at WLU.

Each one of the 21 graduates Friday night began their degree at Alderson Broaddus University, which had closed its doors for good in August 2023 following a multitude of financial problems. Yet they weren’t without a home for long.

WLU scooped up the students and brought them to its campus to finish their degrees. On Friday night, those students not only celebrated the completion of their studies, but the resiliency with which they did it.

“Their resilience was incredible,” WLU PA Program Director Sarah Brammer said. “I can’t truly imagine that month they went through where it was just a question mark. They didn’t know.”

The students agreed that the month between ABU closing and WLU bringing them on board was one of the toughest of their lives.

Some of them remembered exactly where they were on campus when they heard the news the university was closing.

“It was just one of those moments where everything else goes blank,” graduate Cassidy Moran said. “You don’t really know what’s going to happen next, but hearing that West Liberty was going to pick us up was obviously a huge relief.

“Know that for all the hard work we put in up to that point, it wasn’t all in vain,” he added. “It was the best, worst timing, I always say.”

The university’s closing didn’t just crush the students of the present. It hurt the students of the past as well. The graduation ceremony’s keynote speaker was Glen Combs, a 1973 AB graduate who served as president of the American Academy of Physician Associates twice. Part of his speech mentioned the great memories he held of the small campus in the middle of West Virginia.

“The closing of AB was a major traumatic event for all of us,” Combs said. “It still causes many of us emotional pain that just won’t go away.

“Your perseverance and dedication during these troubled times, and reaching your goals is really a true inspiration,” he added.

Graduate Lane Davidson lauded West Liberty for the way the university helped the ABU students stay on track. That included offering financial support through the West Liberty University Foundation’s Topper Grant Scholarship Program, which specifically supports first-year and new transfer students.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better program and better people to welcome us here,” Davidson said. “They always just made us feel welcome, made us feel at home, made us feel like we belonged here. We were not an afterthought. That made it a very seamless transition overall.”

WLU honored the students history with Alderson Broaddus. Along with their stoles, each student received a blue and gold cord signifying the ABU school colors to commemorate their time there.

Brammer said it was WLU’s pleasure to welcome these 21 students into the Hilltopper family and, while they may not have begun at West Liberty, they all can call themselves proud graduates of the university.

“It’s such an exciting day,” she said. “There have been so many positives that have come out of this year for us and for them, and we’re just honored to be part of it.”

Davidson said while the memories sometimes were tough, he can look back now with a smile at what was accomplished.

“It adds to the experience,” he said. “It’s always a conversation starter.

“Maybe that’ll help me with my future employment,” he added with a smile. “At least people will remember, ‘Oh, that’s the guy that went to two PA programs.'”

University Statements

Update on cornell-uaw negotiations.

Dear Ithaca campus community,

As you may know, the university and the United Automobile Workers (UAW) have been working on a new collective bargaining agreement since April 2024. The UAW represents about 1,300 of our employees across campus, including in Dining, Building Care, Facilities, CALS, CVM and the Statler Hotel. The university and the UAW have had a productive labor-management relationship for more than 40 years, and we are committed to the continued success of this relationship and to reaching our next agreement.

Despite the best efforts of the university, the parties have not yet reached a new agreement. The parties have been successful on a number of key issues concerning the bargaining unit, such as health and personal leave (“HAP”), vacation consistent with university policy, and health and safety. We have proposed to the UAW that we use the federal mediator assigned to the negotiations or a mediator of the UAW’s choice to assist the parties in reaching a complete agreement. The UAW has rejected this suggestion.

The University’s latest offer to the UAW includes the following:

  • 6% wage increase in the first year, with additional increases in each of the additional proposed years.
  • Changes to wage rates based on years of service which, with the 6% increase, result in wage increases of at least 10% for more than half of the unit.
  • A reduction of the time for new employees to reach the job rate for their positions, from three years to one year.
  • An increased wage for our most senior employees, recognizing them at 10 years and 25 years of service.
  • Bonuses recognizing the longevity of employees at 5 and 15 years of service.
  • Increases to clothing and shoe allowances across the unit, including provision of these allowances to additional groups of employees.
  • Increased pay rates for employees providing peer-to-peer on the job training.
  • Increased eligibility for shift differential.
  • Support for tipped employees with retirement savings.

We are committed to continuing to bargain with the UAW to reach a new agreement.

The university is aware that the UAW has voted to authorize a strike and has scheduled a rally for today at Bailey Hall. If a strike is called, employees represented by the UAW may decide to join the strike or they may elect to report to work. We respect employees’ right to make this decision.

If the UAW calls a strike, the university has contingency plans in place to maintain essential services. Any shifts in operations, such as reduced dining hours or offerings, will be communicated on a rolling basis as these impacts may vary day to day. Employees with questions should consult with their supervisors for additional guidance on contingency plans.

The university continues to bargain in good faith. We remain hopeful we will find common ground on the remaining open issues and reach a tentative agreement acceptable to the employees represented by the UAW.

Christine Lovely Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer

  • The Department of Political Science
  • Doctoral Studies

The Ph.D. Programme in political science

The Ph.D. Programme in political science comprises 240 higher education credits (hec). The goal of the programme is for the doctoral students (PhD students) to acquire and develop the knowledge and skills required to conduct independent research in Political Science and to complete a PhD.

The dissertation comprises 180 hec, and course work comprises 60 hec. Doctoral students (Ph.D. students) that are admitted to the programme are employed at the Department. The Ph.D. Programme is governed by the Higher Education Ordinance, The University’s and the Faculty’s rules and regulations for third-cycle studies, and the General Syllabus.

Doctoral position

Our Ph.D. students are generally employed for four years. Up to 20 percent of doctoral employment can consist of departmental duties, and the employment is extended with the corresponding amount of time. This means that the total time of employment can be a maximum of five years. Periods of sick leave, parental leave, leave of absence and certain representative duties are exempt from the five-year maximum.

The doctoral salaries are fixed by local agreements at the University of Gothenburg and negotiated with union representatives.

For 2022/23, the starting salary is 28 050 SEK. The doctoral salary increases once the Ph.D. student completes 50, 80, and 100 percent of the Ph.D. programme. The maximum salary (after Ph.D. defense) is currently 34 500 SEK.

Ph.D. students at the University of Gothenburg are state employees and are thus entitled to several benefits and insurances. Read more about b enefits and insurances at the University of Gothenburg .

Supervision

Each Ph.D. student is assigned a main supervisor and an assistant supervisor. Supervisors are appointed in consultation between the Ph.D. student and the Director of Doctoral Studies. Prospective Ph.D. students do not need to contact potential supervisors before applying to the programme.

The dissertation

The dissertation can be written in the form of a compilation, which means several articles and/or papers preceded by an introductory chapter (“kappa”), or as a monograph (i.e. a cohesive book).

Ph.D. students are expected to present their work on several occasions during the Ph.D. Programme:

At the end of the first year of the programme, the Department organizes a prospectus presentation seminar, at which the first-year Ph.D. students present the first draft of their dissertation to the entire Department, and receive questions and feedback from discussants.

When a Ph.D. student has completed around 50 percent of the programme, they present a paper or chapter or their dissertation at one of the Department’s seminar series.

When a Ph.D. student has completed around 80 percent of the programme, they present two chapters (for monographs), or one paper and the introductory chapter (for compilations) of their dissertation at the Department’s General Research Seminar. Finally, Ph.D. students defend their dissertation at a public Ph.D. defense, where the dissertation is discussed with an opponent, and a grading committee decides whether it will receive a ”pass”.

International networks and contacts

The Ph.D. Programme offers great opportunities for establishing international contacts. For example, doctoral students can participate in research conferences and might also participate in research work at universities abroad.

Future careers

A doctorate in political science can lead to a research career within or outside academia, teaching at different levels within universities, or a career such as a social analyst in the public sector or in politics.

Question   Can the Breast Cancer Index (BCI) prognosticate and predict benefit of ovarian function suppression–based adjuvant endocrine therapy in premenopausal women with hormone receptor–positive breast cancer?

Findings   In this prospective-retrospective translational study of 1687 patients enrolled in SOFT (Suppression of Ovarian Function Trial), individuals with BCI HOXB13/IL17BR ratio (BCI[H/I])–low tumors had greater benefit from ovarian function suppression–based adjuvant endocrine therapy than patients with BCI(H/I)-high tumors. A higher BCI continuous index was confirmed to be associated with poorer prognosis in this population.

Meaning   If validated in additional studies, BCI may aid decision-making about adjuvant endocrine therapy for premenopausal patients with hormone receptor–positive breast cancer.

Importance   Adjuvant ovarian function suppression (OFS) with oral endocrine therapy improves outcomes for premenopausal patients with hormone receptor–positive (HR + ) breast cancer but adds adverse effects. A genomic biomarker for selecting patients most likely to benefit from OFS-based treatment is lacking.

Objective   To assess the predictive and prognostic performance of the Breast Cancer Index (BCI) for OFS benefit in premenopausal women with HR + breast cancer.

Design, Setting, and Participants   This prospective-retrospective translational study used all available tumor tissue samples from female patients from the Suppression of Ovarian Function Trial (SOFT). These individuals were randomized to receive 5 years of adjuvant tamoxifen alone, tamoxifen plus OFS, or exemestane plus OFS. BCI testing was performed blinded to clinical data and outcome. The a priori hypothesis was that BCI HOXB13/IL17BR ratio (BCI[H/I])–high tumors would benefit more from OFS and high BCI portended poorer prognosis in this population. Settings spanned multiple centers internationally. Participants included premenopausal female patients with HR + early breast cancer with specimens in the International Breast Cancer Study Group tumor repository available for RNA extraction. Data were collected from December 2003 to April 2021 and were analyzed from May 2022 to October 2022.

Main Outcomes and Measures   Primary end points were breast cancer–free interval (BCFI) for the predictive analysis and distant recurrence-free interval (DRFI) for the prognostic analyses.

Results   Tumor specimens were available for 1718 of the 3047 female patients in the SOFT intention-to-treat population. The 1687 patients (98.2%) who had specimens that yielded sufficient RNA for BCI testing represented the parent trial population. The median (IQR) follow-up time was 12 (10.5-13.4) years, and 512 patients (30.3%) were younger than 40 years. Tumors were BCI(H/I)-low for 972 patients (57.6%) and BCI(H/I)-high for 715 patients (42.4%). Patients with tumors classified as BCI(H/I)-low exhibited a 12-year absolute benefit in BCFI of 11.6% from exemestane plus OFS (hazard ratio [HR], 0.48 [95% CI, 0.33-0.71]) and an absolute benefit of 7.3% from tamoxifen plus OFS (HR, 0.69 [95% CI, 0.48-0.97]) relative to tamoxifen alone. In contrast, patients with BCI(H/I)-high tumors did not benefit from either exemestane plus OFS (absolute benefit, −0.4%; HR, 1.03 [95% CI, 0.70-1.53]; P for interaction = .006) or tamoxifen plus OFS (absolute benefit, −1.2%; HR, 1.05 [95% CI, 0.72-1.54]; P for interaction = .11) compared with tamoxifen alone. BCI continuous index was significantly prognostic in the N0 subgroup for DRFI (n = 1110; P  = .004), with 12-year DRFI of 95.9%, 90.8%, and 86.3% in BCI low-risk, intermediate-risk, and high-risk N0 cancers, respectively.

Conclusions and Relevance   In this prospective-retrospective translational study of patients enrolled in SOFT, BCI was confirmed as prognostic in premenopausal women with HR + breast cancer. The benefit from OFS-containing adjuvant endocrine therapy was greater for patients with BCI(H/I)-low tumors than BCI(H/I)-high tumors. BCI(H/I)-low status may identify premenopausal patients who are likely to benefit from this more intensive endocrine therapy.
