13.1 Ecologists Study Relationships

Main Idea 1: � Ecologists study environments at different levels of organization.

• Ecology is the study of the interactions (relationships) among living things, and between living things and their surroundings.
• Studying how life interacts within the biosphere.
• Scientists used to study each organism separately

as if they existed in isolation.

Levels of Organization� (There are 5 levels)

However, now scientists study nature on different levels, from local to a global scale. This organization reveals the complex relationships found in nature.

First level:

• An organism is an individual living thing, such as an alligator.

Second level:

• A population is a group of the same species that lives in one area.
• What can cause populations to change?

Limiting Factors of Populations

• Birth & death rates eventually balance

Factors : Disease, food, predators, climate, space, mates

• Carrying Capacity :

Greatest number of individuals that a population can sustain

• What stage is the human population in?

Human Population: Fast Growth Stage

• How have humans extended our carrying capacity?
• Medical innovations
• Clean water
• Public assistance

Third level:

• A community is a group of different species that live together in one area.

Fourth level:

• An ecosystem includes all of the organisms as well as the climate, soil, water, rocks and other nonliving things in a given area.

Fifth level:

• A biome is a major regional or global community of organisms characterized by the climate conditions and plant communities that

thrive there.

• Climate factors that affect biomes: sun, rain, topography
• Climate determines life.

Basically, a biome is a large area with distinct climate, plant, and animal life.

• Keystone Species

KEY CONCEPT � Every ecosystem includes both living and nonliving factors.

Main Idea 1:�An ecosystem includes both biotic and abiotic factors.

• Biotic factors are

living things, like:

• If something has life,

then it is living.

• Abiotic factors are nonliving things, like:
• temperature
• A = Without Bio = Life
• If something does not have life, then it is not living.
• The balance of these factors determines what can live in a particular environment.

Main Idea 2:�Changing one factor in an ecosystem can affect many other factors.

An ecosystem is a complex web of connected biotic and abiotic factors.

• Biodiversity is the assortment, or variety, of living things in an ecosystem.
• The amount of biodiversity in an ecosystem depends on many factors.
• Rain forests have more biodiversity than other locations in the world, but are threatened by human activities.
• Why is this?
• A keystone species is a species that has an unusually large effect on its ecosystem.
• Because there are complex relationships within an ecosystem, a single change ( a few broken strings in a web ) in biotic or abiotic factors could have a variety of effects.

Introduction Design with nature was published 50 years ago and will be celebrated by the University of Pennsyl-vania McHarg Center. Penn Department of Landscape Architecture is honoring one of his most famous head and promising that his lesson may steal lead a new wave of sustainable planning and also a movement for ecological purposes. Meeting around such mythic figure the best thinking and profession of our time will not reaffirm any more the pivot rule of the ivy league University, but also to foster some central principle still projected to a future envisaged half a century ago but no more achieved. The choice of supporting ideas and proposals clearly opposed to the majority trend in the United States and his Presidency (already an alumni of the Penn Warton School) is shown as a sharp positioning in the political arena in addition to academic ambitions. In this contribution, at distance, to that celebrations, as a post-doc researcher to the close Department of Planning, I will try to select what seems to me the most promising ideas still able to stimulate and address the work of landscape, regional and urban planners. I will start recalling few information of the McHarg biography that may explain why his commitment to environmental issues was so challenging and may be still fertile. Then I will outline some features of the planning culture of the time the book was written having special attention to the closer colleagues and theories growing in the Philadelphia melting pot. I find also of great interest to point to the way the book was born not only as the output of the complex character of its author, but as a measure of the deep construction of proposals whose aim was to face new and hard problems in a fresh vision and practical efficiency. Many critics, better that I can do now, forwarded many and sometime contrasting appraisal of the values of this book together to the whole McHarg production. Some stated that in Design with Nature is condensed all McHarg had to say, or at least the best he could. That is why, discussion over his contribution to landscape design could be concentrate there to assess faults and merits. My effort is more oriented by the interest of a reflexive practitioner, always in search of effective tools for practice. In the list many things may be added: new perspective to look at complex word phenomena and be able to understand them; how to take advantage of the knowledge coming from science and technology and use it to human purpose; why deep beliefs spread in our culture and lead our actions, belonging to decision processes; how the knowledge bag of planners benefitted of his teaching, and sill do.

While environment has become a popular topic in many circles conservation, legislative, corporate, community, and international, it has not often provoked a reflective inquiry into its philosophical meaning and significance. Indeed, in the increasing regard for environment, a crucial aspect of the subject has often been either disregarded, circumscribed, or trivialized: the aesthetic. And when aesthetic interests do receive attention, they are usually judged as a belated and desperate effort to save the beauty of our natural world from the irrecoverable ravages of exploitation and from the disfigurement and loss that follow. Recognizing aesthetic values in environment should lead, however, to more than opposition to clearcutting and the desecration of pristine lakes by ringing them with cottages and resorts. An aesthetic interest in environment means more than neighborhood cleanup campaigns. It involves more than appreciating gardens, parks, or urban vistas. It requires even more than preserving the architectural heritage of our cities and rebuilding their wastelands of physical and social decay. Important as all these are, they are still restricted by a limited focus. For the aesthetic is crucial in our very perception of environment. It entails the form and quality of human experience in general. The environment can be seen as the condition of all such experience, where the aesthetic becomes the qualitative center of our daily lives. If a concern for environmental quality is to result in more than a program for removing billboards, camouflaging junkyards, and replacing slums with the tenements of the future, it must go beyond mere palliatives of comforting images of prettiness, cleanliness, and order. A serious concern for environment must also articulate and develop the convictions and values that have aroused these efforts; it must encourage the support of goals that are both richer and more substantive. Doing this might seem to require an act of philosophical creation ex nihilo, for philosophers have never devoted much attention to such questions and, with the exception of a few thinkers like Kant, Schelling, Ruskin, and Santayana, have tended to ignore the aesthetics of nature altogether. For the most part, philosophical aesthetics has turned to nature for illustration, only rarely recognizing experience there comparable in significance and profundity to the experience of art.

Few landscape architects have not heard of Design with Nature or lan McHarg. While they might not be familiar with the content of Design with Nature in detail or the nuances of McHarg's message, they will know its fundamental premise: the need to work with nature to design better spaces for human beings. This new volume, Design with Nature Now, timed to mark the original book's fiftieth anniversary, brings a renewed focus on the original volume. As the editors write in the introduction, 'For McHarg, to design with nature meant for humanity to intentionally and benignly fit itself to the environment'. (p.1-2)
