These Are the Two Easy Ways I Transfer Books to My Kindle

I’m ditching all other streaming services, but i’m keeping this one, think you can hear hi-res audio i took this test to find out.

Although free movie streaming might sound synonymous with piracy, there are loads of legal free movie websites on the internet. These are packed full of movies you can stream for free without breaking the law.

Whether you're looking for movies or TV shows, finding free videos to stream is totally feasible; it just requires that you know where to look. With that in mind, here are the best free online movie streaming sites to check out.

What to Expect From Free Movie Streaming Sites

There are a ton of free, legal videos online, so you'll find a great mix of options on the below services. A healthy amount of the movies available to stream for free are in the public domain. Because these films have lapsed in ownership and fallen into common property, many sites host such video treasures.

But it isn't just B-movies available to stream online; you'll also find many big-budget releases. Usually, these are ad-supported, so like watching a movie on TV, you'll have to sit through limited commercials. Nevertheless, the movies are usually presented uncut.

You shouldn't expect to see the latest releases. Instead, you'll mostly see movies dating back anywhere from a few months to many years. Additionally, some sites include original productions and amateur films.

To watch on the go, don't forget to also install some of the best free movie apps on your phone.

YouTube Free Movies

It's no surprise that YouTube ranks among the best free movie streaming sites you can find. It offers a ton of free films to pick from, including many public domain films from channels such as the aptly titled Public Domain Films .

Furthermore, channels like Popcornflix host full movies via YouTube, and you'll find an official Free to Watch section in YouTube's Movies & Shows hub. There's a fantastic mix, with everything from classic comedies to sports and much more. It's a far cry from channels that only offer movies from the 1950s you've never heard of.

You may have to dig a bit for what you want to watch. But for those with patience, YouTube is a treasure trove of free, legal movies to stream.

Crackle Movies

Boasting a solid array of syndicated content and its own productions, Crackle is a must for any film buff . Its rotating selection varies, but you'll find quality movies across genres here.

Aside from films, Crackle features television shows, including original programming. And by making a free account, you can enjoy Crackle on your TV too.

3. Midnight Pulp

Midnight Pulp Free Movie Site

Midnight Pulp is the new home of the defunct CONtv It features live TV, shows, and movies. The selection is a bit wild, consisting largely of horror, offbeat comedies, cheesy action, and Asian films. Some content requires a subscription, but a lot of what's here is available to watch for free.

Vudu Free Movies

While Vudu is known for its digital video rentals and sales, it has a sizable selection of free movies to stream too. With a comprehensive array of movies and TV shows, plus fresh additions arriving regularly, it's a fantastic service.

Vudu's free section operates similarly to Crackle by providing full movies with limited commercials. Through hosting films with ads, Vudu is able to offer free movies and TV shows legally.

You need to register for a free Vudu account to use this service, but it's worth doing so. Once you do, you can use your account to activate digital copies of movies and shows, as well as buy and rent movies from Vudu.

5. Popcornflix

PopcornFlix Website

Like Crackle, Popcornflix presents full movies with limited ads. Here, you'll find a range of movies in a rotating selection, and there's no account required to start watching. The service even offers some original content, to boot.

Flicks are segmented into genres that are more unique than the standard ones, such as Out for Revenge and Medieval Action . With a beefy lineup and easy navigation, Popcornflix is an awesome choice for free, legal movie streaming.

Tubi Website

Providing free movies and shows, Tubi is another fantastic service for legal movie streams. Here, you'll be able to view newer movies from as recent as 2022, as well as older favorites.

Helpfully, Tubi offers a Leaving Soon category. This lets you prioritize your streaming queue so you can catch movies and shows before they disappear. Be sure to check out the First Time on Tubi collection, too.

7. Pluto TV

Pluto TV Movies

Pluto TV has a lot to offer. You'll find a Live TV section where you can switch between channels, much like traditional cable. Switch to the Live TV section on the left side to jump to channels that only play films, though they may be in the middle of something depending on when you start watching.

If you can't find something that you like on the live stations, switch to the On Demand section at the top. Here you'll find tons of free movies you can start streaming right away.

8. Classic Cinema Online

Classic Cinema Online

As the name suggests, Classic Cinema Online focuses on older content. Even its website aesthetic captures a decidedly retro vibe, using a backdrop of red theater curtains. You can walk through the decades here with films from the 1930s to the 1960s. There are even some silent films on offer, if you're interested in those.

Some of the inclusions may have you calling the definition of "classic cinema" into question. Nevertheless, Classic Cinema Online is pure gold for old-school movies and one of the best sites for public domain films .

Hoopla Movies

Hoopla has one barrier to entry, but is still an easy way to legally watch movies online for free. To use Hoopla, you'll need to create an account and link your supported public library card.

Once you do, you can use Hoopla to borrow movies and TV shows, plus audiobooks and ebooks, from your library's collection. The service is available on the web as well as apps for all your devices and TV streaming boxes.

If you don't have a library card or your library doesn't support Hoopla, you won't be able to use it. But if you can, it's a service worth checking out.

Yidio Free Movies

Although Yidio isn't a video host, it does act as an excellent aggregator of free streaming movies and TV shows. The way Yidio works is by redirecting you to third-party services such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, and others. As such, certain films and shows here do require a subscription.

Using the Free filter on the left side will help you find movies and TV that come at no cost. Unfortunately, not everything in the free categories is actually free. Clicking on some titles prompts you to sign up for a free trial.

Still, Yidio makes finding free movie streams far easier than checking individual sites manually. You can filter by rating, genre, and more to find something to watch.

11. The Roku Channel

The Roku Channel Movies

Don't be fooled by The Roku Channel's name. While it's available for Roku streaming devices via an app, you can watch on the web too. With a few clicks, you can stream Roku Originals, popular TV shows, and new-arrival movies.

The selection rotates, and there are categories on the main page to help you find something you'll enjoy. As expected, you'll have to sit through ads, but ad-supported means free, right?

Kanopy Movies

Libraries are most often associated with books, but that's not all they provide. Kanopy, like Hoopla mentioned above, lets you stream tons of "thoughtful entertainment" movies for free, making it another great way to get free content with a participating library card (or university login).

With either of those, you can watch hundreds of free movies. These include a lot of documentaries and international films, so this is a great fit for those who want something a little different.

13. Amazon Freevee

Amazon Freevee

Amazon Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) lets you enjoy free movies on Amazon Video. The service launched in 2019 and while its name has changed, the experience has remained the same. It allows anyone with a free account to watch a selection of free movies and TV shows. In addition to watching online, you can enjoy this content on your Fire TV, Xbox, PlayStation, and other streaming devices.

Alongside the movies, you'll also find some TV series (including live channels) and originals to enjoy.

14. Free Movies Cinema

Free Movies Cinema

As the name suggests, Free Movies Cinema features legal free movie streaming. Unlike many sites, the selection touts not only general categories like action and comedy, but also short films and features.

There's also a collection of fan-made movies, such as Portal and Watch Dogs, based on video games of the same names.

15. Top Documentary Films

Top Documentary Films

If you're looking for free documentaries, you'll find plenty at Top Documentary Films. It packs a varied selection, including amateur documentaries you might not have heard about before.

Browse the Top 100 documentaries to find something that's popular, or take a look at recently added movies or the various genres to drill down a bit.

The Best Free Movie Sites for Everyone

With these free online movie streaming sites, you now know where to look for hundreds of free movies. Enjoy these legal films anytime, anywhere so you never go without something to watch.

Meanwhile, you should also know how to legally download movies for offline use, so you can enjoy them on your next flight or long trip.

11 of Our Favorites Places to Watch Free Movies Online

Tubi and YouTube are just two examples of sites with free movies

  • Favorite Events

Watching free movies online is a convenient and frugal way to see the films you love right from the comfort of your own home. Yes, there are plenty of sites where you can get movies "for free" but I've taken the time to confirm that the ones listed below, although ad-supported, are clean from viruses and, importantly, 100% legal to use .

Our Top Picks

Best Overall: Tubi

Tubi has thousands of free movies and shows, including big titles and a kid-friendly area.

Best for User Feedback: YouTube

Among the millions of videos on YouTube are free movies with ads, curated by YouTube staff.

Best for High-Quality Movies: Fandango at Home

Fandango at Home's high-def movies are organized into unique sections like Blast From the Past, Hidden Gems, and Big Time Movie Stars.

Best for Popular Titles: Freevee

Amazon's movie streaming service includes tons of well-known free films.

Best for a TV Experience: Pluto TV

It's like cable TV, but totally free. Watch on-demand movies and TV, plus live videos 24/7.

Best for Finding Movies Around the Web: Yidio

Yidio doesn't host any content, but it has a robust search feature that finds where you can watch films and shows for free online.

There's a huge variety of freely available movies on these sites, from dramas and comedies to action and horror films. There are movies from big-name studios, but also many older and independent movies that you'll love to watch over and over again. Just be sure you have the best TV to ensure a great viewing experience.

I spend some time each month looking for websites with free movies. This list was last updated in August to confirm that they still work, are still free, and are still worth your time.

All the movies you can find through these websites are also available in their respective movie streaming app . Most are available through streaming devices , too.

High quality, popular movies.

Lots of categories.

Subtitles can be enabled for most movies.

Has a section just for kids.

You don't need to log in to start watching.

Genre categories don't separate movies from shows.

You don't want to miss the thousands of free movies and TV shows you can stream right now on Tubi.

I like to visit the Leaving Soon page to catch freebies before they start to cost somewhere else, but my favorite part of this website for inspiration is Trending On Social — I often have no clue what I'm in the mood for, so to see what everyone else is watching right now is awesome.

For example, a few of the more popular titles people have been streaming over the last month include Friday, Gossip Girl, Sleepover, The Fast and the Furious, and Shooter.

There are dozens of other genres and collections to pick from, too, like exclusives in Only Free on Tubi , and Black Cinema, Foreign Films, Based on a Book, Highly Rated on Rotten Tomatoes, and Cult Classics. There's also a Spanish section and live TV.

Tubi Kids is a section of this site perfect for streaming just kid-related films. It's available from the top of the website and has categories just for preschoolers and other kids, including Toon TV, LEGO, Animé, and Friendly Monsters films. There are also parental controls you can set through the normal website.

You don't even need a user account to watch this stuff. Just follow this link below, click something you're interested in, and enjoy!

Movies are rated by real viewers.

You can leave comments.

Single, easy-to-scroll-through list.

Most movies have subtitles.

No ads for Premium subscribers.

Relatively few genres.

No easy search tool for just the free films.

I was shocked the first time I found out YouTube has free movies. And no, these aren't poorly filmed videos without subtitles uploaded by some random user. I mean proper, full-length, totally legal movies managed directly by YouTube.

Recently, I was able to watch Project Gemini and Empire State ; both included captions and were available in 1080p. Here are some other examples of free films I saw listed on YouTube this past month: Employee of the Month, LOL, Open 24 Hours , and In Time.

Something you can't get with YouTube but that is supported by most of these movie sites is the ability to search through just the free titles. However, here's a trick that has saved me loads of time: Open the full list of movies and use your browser's Find function to search by year, genre, or title.

YouTube's curated list (the link below) is the best way to find all their new and popular free films. Some companies, like Cineverse , list movies in their own profile.

Fandango at Home

Lots of high quality movies.

Several useful ways to find just the free movies.

Most are popular and well known, and include subtitles.

Films can be filtered and sorted in a number of ways.

Also supports buying and renting movies.

Some movies here cost.

You must log in (it's free).

There are thousands of movies on Fandango at Home that you can watch right now. All you have to do is put up with a few commercials.

It's a great movie site whether you do or don't know what you want to watch. Films can be filtered by genre, and you can browse by most-watched or release date. All the basic genres are available: action, comedy, crime, romance, and a few others.

While it's true that the genres aren't interesting, Fandango at Home makes up for it with their curated lists. Check these out: Big Time Movie Stars , Critically Acclaimed , Hidden Gems , and Most Watched Movies . There are a few hundred videos in each section.

Something unique about this site is that it not only lets you look through the newest releases, but you can do so on a single page for every genre. Another great thing about Fandango at Home's movies is that some of them are in 1080p, so you don't have to sacrifice quality just to watch some free movies.

Once you settle on something to watch, you might be given the option to buy or rent it, but so long as you find it through one of the free pages, there will be a button you can use to stream the movie without paying. You can even watch movies still in theaters .

Great collection of newer free films and shows.

Browsing for movies is easy.

Includes original videos.

Locate movies with subtitles in your language.

Uncluttered video player.

User account required.

Most in-video ads are long.

Unhelpful search tool.

For US users only.

Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) is Amazon's collection of free movies. I use this a lot from my TV, but it's just as easily accessible from their website or mobile app. Everything I watch here is easy to find and seems to be high-quality.

Something I like about this site is how the genres and movie collections are organized. For example, if I'm looking through the most popular movies or recently added lists, I can filter by genre and/or subtitle language to make sure I find a movie that's a good fit for me.

The video player lets you turn on subtitles, adjust the way the captions show up on the screen, change the video quality, and go into full-screen mode.

There's a lot to explore here, including original films, but I'll get you started with these titles that are some of the more popular choices: Split, The Turning, Hotel Transylvania 3, and My Mom's New Boyfriend.

Has the same feel as a TV's channel guide.

Includes thousands of on-demand movies.

Streams TV shows, news, music, and more.

No user account necessary.

Provides a 'Last Chance to Watch' section.

Has only a dozen or so channels for just movies.

Live-streamed movies can't be watched again on demand.

There's always a video playing; you can mute, but not stop it.

Pluto TV is the closest thing I've found to free cable TV. It's owned by Paramount and fully supported by ads, so there's no worry that you might accidentally buy something.

My biggest joy about using this service is that I can just turn it on and let it play. There are hundreds of live channels, so some of them feature news, reality TV, or game shows, but others have full-length movies.

Not everything is live, though, which is good. If I'm in the mood for something specific, I can look through thousands of movies and TV shows that are available on demand.

The unique categories for their on-demand films are a huge plus because most movie sites just stick to the traditional few genres. Hollywood Icons, The King of Horror, Whoa. Keanu is on Pluto TV , 00s Replay, and Cult Films are a few examples.

These are some of the most-watched movies on Pluto TV this last month: Good Burger, Road Trip, School of Rock, Red Eye , and Equilibrium .

In my experience, running Pluto TV through a TV makes it easier to use because the always-on video player gets in the way on smaller screens. But, there is a mobile app and a desktop player if you'd rather go that route.

Makes it easy to find free movies around the web.

Lots of unique filtering options.

Sort by popularity and date added.

Can be helpful for renting and buying, too.

Films are streamed through other sites.

Incorrectly labels some paid movies as free.

Shows the wrong synopsis and photo for some films.

I'm so happy I stumbled on Yidio years ago! It's like a search engine for all these other movie sites. It's incredibly handy because it shows where on the internet a movie is available for free.

A search box would be enough, but Yidio goes above and beyond with lots of other sorting and filtering options. These include MPAA rating, decade, genre, IMDb score, and others. Just fill out any of that information to get a list you can comb through, with links to free movie sites.

For example, I asked Yidio to find me free animation movies released since 2020 and to sort the list by IMDb rating. The top several results provided links to watch those films on Tubi, Roku, Pluto TV, and other free streaming sites.

This isn't a perfect service, but it works great nearly every time I use it.

Most if not all movies have subtitles.

Doesn't require a user account.

Several ways to browse the films.

Create a queue for easy passive watching.

Mostly uninteresting genres.

Lists shows alongside the movies.

Huge lists of videos that can't be sorted.

Plex is an interesting service because it's actually a much bigger package than it might seem at first. In addition to its massive collection of free full-length movies and TV shows, Plex also has live TV and software that serves as a really cool at-home media server .

Currently, there are tens of thousands of free movies and shows here. They're sectioned off in traditional genres like action and crime, but you can also browse by actor or channel. Plex has its own unique collections, too; I've seen Feel Good Films , Til Death Do Us Part, Oh-My-Godzilla, Cheap Thrills, and Midnight Movies .

On a movie's watch page are similar titles and additional details that help build a total picture of the film, like the full cast list, reviews, and trailers. I love this because it makes it easy to find other movies on Plex with the same stars.

See which movies on Plex are leaving soon to catch them before they go! Plex's Most Popular page lists The Girl Next Door, Cruel Intentions, Scary Movie 4, Movie 43, and others.

If you can't find what you want on Plex, the title you're interested in might still show up in the results, and you'll be given links to places you can buy/rent it (sort of like Yidio, listed above).

You don't need a user account.

Also has TV shows.

Save movies to a 'Watch Later' list.

Includes movie trailers.

The ads help fund the project and filmmakers.

Can't sort or filter any genre list.

Really distracting ads.

No age verification for NC-17 films.

Filmzie is built for streaming movies from independent filmmakers and both small and large studios. The site and app are well-designed, and there are plenty of great titles to stream.

Here are some collections I've seen that are rare to find on a movie site: Directed by Women, European Production, Asia's Top Cinema, LGBTQI+, Cuddle-Up Comedies , and Independent Cinema . Of course, over 20 traditional genres, like drama and thriller, are also available. Trending, new, and most-watched movies each have their own section as well.

Filmzie does a great job organizing its movies. This is the main reason I use it. That, and there are so many videos here that I have never even heard of, so it's the perfect place to find something brand new.

Some movies that were trending recently include Lady Chatterley's Lover , Dark Souls, Raven, Delicious, and The Frame.

I've used the website and the mobile app, and both work more or less the same as these other movie sites.

Big selection, including recent films.

Good video quality.

Really great mobile app.

Can't sort films by popularity.

Available only in the US and its territories.

Crackle is a no-brainer for this list. I always come back to it to watch free movies online because of its list of hundreds of full-length films and original programming. These are big-name movies with stars I'm sure you know.

Although you have to sit through commercials, I find them to be relatively short, with only a few breaks during a movie.

Another reason I choose Crackle is because of its unique categories like Summer Binge-a-Thon , Foreign Language, Stand-Up, British, Variety/Talk/Games, and Unidentified/Unexplained . It's fun to look through interesting genres like this.

A closed captioning toggle is available directly from the video player for all users but, if you sign up for an account (it's free), you can also enable parental controls (options are kids mode, teen mode, and grown-up mode).

Here are some examples of the most popular movies on Crackle: 2010: Moby Dick, Colonia, Wes Craven's Summer of Fear , King of the Lost World , and Sanctuary.

The Roku Channel

Provides high quality movies.

Includes newer films.

Works on computers, mobile devices, and TVs.

Offers customizable captions.

No user account needed.

Can't filter or sort any genre list.

Doesn't separate movies from shows in category lists.

Lists paid videos next to free ones.

You might already know about Roku's free movies if you have a Roku TV or streaming device. But even if you don't, you can still watch all the same free movies, TV shows, and live TV from a computer, phone, or tablet.

There are some ads in these movies, but the trade-off is high-quality videos and well-known movies.

On the home page are handy categories I have yet to find on another website with free movies. They often change, but some that I've seen recently include End of Summer Laughs, Dinosaurs & Dragons, Leading Men, Retro Action Movies , and Music on the Small Screen.

While there are also typical genre lists you can browse through, none of them let you sort by popularity or filter by rating or year. This is by far my biggest issue with the service. That, and both TV shows and movies are mixed into the same lists and said lists must be browsed horizontally in a carousel-like menu. It's just not super user-friendly.

However, I do like that you can search for actors and directors to find movies they're associated with. I also appreciate the Continue watching section.

Includes thousands of free videos.

Adds new movies often.

No ads display within the movies.

Loads of genres to pick from.

Unique movies.

Must have a supported library card or school account.

The Kanopy movie streaming site is different from these other choices because you need a valid library card or university login before you can watch anything. However, there are zero commercials in the movies, and new films are added every month.

Use Kanopy's signup page to search for your library , whether it's a public library or one attached to a school. You can start watching movies after you've been approved.

Kanopy does a great job of providing useful categories to look through. There's Short Film, History - Ancient, LGBTQ Cinema, War & Action, Sociology, Performing Arts, Human Rights, Everyday Health, and K-12 Lessons .

A few of the more popular movies here include God's Own Country, Lady Bird, The Bookshop, and Anomalisa.

There's also an entirely separate section for kid movies at Kanopy . My son's old enough now to watch more mature movies, but if he weren't, I'd be thrilled with this. There are subsections like Story Time and Read-Along Storybooks . You can also set up parental controls to force only age-appropriate content.

Crackle is an ad-supported streaming service that Sony Entertainment used to own. Despite changing ownership, the platform still offers over 1,000 movies, including popular titles such as The Aristocrats and Bernie , and nearly 100 television shows. The platform has a lot of junk, but dig through it, and you're sure to find your next favorite movie.

The sidebar shows various movie categories to filter the extensive catalog. It also has a healthy helping of animated shows, reality TV series, action, sci-fi, and thrillers. It's limited to the United States and its territories, and you'll need a VPN to access its content.

The CW isn't a movie streaming service. Instead, it's an American television network. It's full of trashy shows that are perfect for mindless binges. Have an afternoon to yourself and want to watch something ridiculous? Every episode of Riverdale is a train wreck . Do you want to watch a historical drama where all the facts are wrong, and everyone has an American accent? You're going to love Salem .

The CW has a solid assortment of some of the network's newest offerings, but some notable movies are missing. Streaming is only available in the US, but you might be able to bypass that limitation with a VPN since you don't need an account to access it.

You can watch Kung Fu classics and offbeat comedies like American Hero , Almost Pregnant , and Barry Munday. There are murder mysteries like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo , Dead Tone , Stoker Hills , and Don't Go In The Woods .

Kanopy presents an extensive range of films and documentaries for you to enjoy to the max. The platform mainly collaborates with educational institutions, so there's a catch. Free TV streaming access depends on your location and your local library or school's partnership with the platform. You'll use your library card or institution credentials.

It doesn't have the latest movies. Instead, you'll find everything from history and science to literature and the arts. There are movies for kids, including classics like Walt Disney's Maya The Bee . Kanopy is ideal when you want something that encourages learning beyond mindless or entertainment-focused films. You can find a mobile app and web version via search engines.

If you have difficulties using subtitles when streaming, turn on Live Captions . You'll find this feature under Accessibility in your device's settings. The steps may vary based on your device's model and OS.

Cut the cord in style

Compromises are inevitable when using free movie-streaming websites. For a good viewing experience, consider the content availability, ad interruptions, video quality, updates, and legal considerations. Some services are limited to several regions. If you want to access them outside the supported markets, use a VPN network. A robust VPN connection helps you bypass region restrictions and shields your identity by masking the IP address and watch history.

Many free streaming platforms rely on pop-up ads for revenue, so you'll see them more often. If you use a Chrome browser, you can adjust your ad permissions and restrict them. If that doesn't work, use an ad-blocker app or extension.

[Updated: 8/1/24] Apps and sites like Crackle, Freevee, Peacock, Pluto TV, Tubi, Vudu and YouTube all have free movies online for you to stream. The only catch: You have to watch ads. On the plus side, while there are commercial interruptions, the movies are not edited for content like they are on broadcast channels. Which means you can still watch uncut movies and with fewer total interruptions than television airings.

And did we mention the movies were free ?

Which movies should you watch, though, now that you know where to find them? Rotten Tomatoes did some digging and sorted through the free movie catalogs of Peacock, Fandango At Home, Tubi, Freevee, YouTube, and Crackle to find the 100 best movies available to watch for free right now. These films, all Fresh on the Tomatometer, include Oscar winners, blockbusters, comedy classics, informative documentaries, and family favorites — all available to watch for free.

Check out our list of the Freshest movies to watch free online to find something new without paying rental or subscription fees.

Critics Consensus: Though the plot elements are certainly familiar, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull still delivers the thrills and Harrison Ford’s return in the title role is more than welcome.

' sborder=

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009)

Critics Consensus: Befitting its unorthodox origins, this Bad Lieutenant benefits from Werner Herzog’s typically fearless direction and a delightfully unhinged Nicolas Cage in the title role.

' sborder=

Blue Ruin (2013)

Critics Consensus: Smart, stripped-down, and thrillingly grim, Blue Ruin proves that a well-told revenge story can still leave its audience on the edge of their seat.

' sborder=

The Raid 2 (2014)

Critics Consensus: Although its high-energy plot and over-the-top violence may play better with genre aficionados, The Raid 2 definitely delivers more of everything audiences loved about its predecessor.

' sborder=

The Birdcage (1996)

Critics Consensus: Mike Nichols wrangles agreeably amusing performances from Robin Williams and Nathan Lane in this fun, if not quite essential, remake of the French comedy La Cage aux Folles .

Critics Consensus: The Edge of Seventeen ‘s sharp script — and Hailee Steinfeld’s outstanding lead performance — make this more than just another coming-of-age dramedy.

' sborder=

Child's Play (1988)

Critics Consensus: Child’s Play occasionally stumbles across its tonal tightrope of comedy and horror, but its genuinely creepy monster and some deft direction by Tom Holland makes this chiller stand out on the shelf.

' sborder=

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988)

Critics Consensus: A buoyant, clever update of the conman flick Bedtime Story , with plenty of comedic jousting resulting from a winning chemistry between Michael Caine and Steve Martin.

The best places to watch free movies online

It sure seems like everybody these days is either cutting or has already cut the cable cord . With the sheer breadth and convenience of streaming services, it makes sense. You can find practically anything you want to watch on streaming services these days, but even they are getting more expensive by the year. If you’re a real bargain hunter, you want to find ways to watch movies online for free. Believe it or not, legal and secure free movie resources do exist. We’ve found them all for you. Here is our list of the best places to watch free movies online.

The Roku Channel

Plex free movies and tv shows, top documentary films, archive.org, open culture, shocker internet drive-in.

When Roku initially launched its free, ad-supported Roku Channel , it wasn’t technically eligible for this roundup because you had to have one of the company’s streaming media devices to see it. Roku devices certainly won’t break the bank, but they aren’t free. Now, however, the Roku Channel is available to anyone via the web, as well as through the company’s free apps for iOS and Android .

The service boasts more than 40,000 movies and TV shows to choose from, including favorites such as Die Hard , Edward Scissorhands , and The Silence of the Lambs , as well as a number of new and old TV series, from The Dick Van Dyke Show and Bewitched to The Bachelorette . It also has a special Not on Netflix section to help you find movies that aren’t available on your other streaming subscription. You’ll need to create a free Roku account before you can watch, but that’s a quick and painless process. If you ever decide to expand your choices, the Roku Channel is now home to several premium subscription options including Showtime, Epix, Cinemax, AMC, and Starz. The Roku Channel is available in the U.S. and Canada.

This one is a no-brainer. Everyone knows YouTube is the biggest video-hosting service online, and you probably already use the site for silly cat videos and footage of people getting hit with exercise balls. But YouTube has a sizable collection of feature-length movies on its Free to Watch tier as well. Granted, the majority of these are B-movie novelties, but there are a few quality flicks hiding in there.

In addition to the free, Google-curated movies, there are thousands of films on the site that won’t show up unless you search directly for them. If you’re looking for a particular title, especially an older one, it’s worth performing a quick search on YouTube to see if someone has posted it. These aren’t always uploaded by the film’s rights holders, and many of them are divided into episodes and playlists, but as they say, beggars can’t be choosers.

Finding free movies on YouTube has gotten more difficult lately, as more rights holders are opting to offer their films for rent via the service, and YouTube also has subscription tiers like YouTube Premium and its live TV streaming service, YouTube TV . Still, you’ll find plenty to watch, especially if your standards aren’t too high regarding the quality of the stream.

Newer to this roundup is the Amazon-owned IMDb TV (formerly known as Freedive). It has free, ad-supported TV shows and movies. Due to its partnership with Amazon, IMDb TV gets a lot of high-end movies coming and going. Many new to Amazon Prime Video movies start their run on the streaming platform as only available with an IMDb TV subscription. Likewise, thanks to Amazon’s investment, IMDb TV also has a host of original content like Timewasters and  Alex Rider . You can watch IMDb TV on the web, Amazon Fire devices, and Apple TV, as well as through the Amazon Prime app that you can find on many smart TVs, tablets, and phones. IMDb TV is available in the U.S. and U.K.

Crackle originally launched in 2004 under the name Grouper and has been through almost as many name changes as P. Diddy. Initially controlled by Sony, it then became a joint venture between Sony and Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment (which Sony has since relieved itself of). That partnership created a new entity called Crackle Plus , and it was believed that this would also become the name of the streaming service. However, one look at the site and it’s clear that simplicity has won: It’s now just called Crackle. Whew.

On Crackle, you’ll find a mixture of newer releases and classic TV shows and movies in genres spanning action, comedy, crime, drama, horror, and sci-fi. Most of their roster is from Sony Pictures and its offshoots, including Columbia Pictures, TriStar, and Sony Pictures Classics, but the streamer also features content from partners such as Lionsgate, Miramax, NBC Universal, MGM, and more.

On the movie front, you’ll find both box office and critical hits like I Am Not Your Negro and Man on Wire , as well as some quality low-budget hits like  Lion and a host of Christmas movies. Plus, there’s a generous smattering of obscure but interesting B movies. The TV selection is OK, too, featuring studio shows like 21 Jump Street and 3rd Rock from the Sun and originals such as  The Oath and Going from Broke .

Crackle is a great resource, though the constant interruptions from advertisers can get old pretty quickly, and while the service is free, signing up for an account will unlock some helpful features such as parental controls, captions for movies, and a Watch Later feature so you can access shows of interest later. The service is offered in 21 countries but has shut down its Canadian, Latin American, and Australian offerings.

Vudu has a free ad-supported content section that varies from month to month in terms of quality. Vudu also has an In Theaters: Films Before DVD option, allowing you to watch brand new movies that are in theaters or yet to arrive on DVD for a price.

If you take a cruise through the site’s selection of 4K/UHD titles, there are even one or two free-to-watch options. You’ll still need a Vudu account, but you can create one for free. The Vudu app is already supported by plenty of platforms, including Apple TV, game consoles, and more. Plus, there’s an app for most mobile devices. Vudu is only available in the U.S. and Mexico.

How’s this for a good deal: Sign up for a library card and get free downloads or streams of movies with no ads at all. That’s the deal when you use Hoopla , a digital media streaming platform that has partnered with local libraries to let members access borrowable content online. It’s similar to OverDrive , but with more than just e-books and audiobooks.

The availability of any given title will depend on your location and the number of copies available for download, but we found some surprisingly decent flicks when we last checked. Streaming will work on any device with a browser, while downloads require the Hoopla app on a mobile device. Not every library currently supports Hoopla, so make sure you ask. So far, libraries in the U.S. and Canada have access to Hoopla. It also offers a Chrome extension to make downloading and streaming even easier in your browser.

YouTube might be the biggest video-hosting site, but Vimeo is probably the best. Yeah, them’s fighting words, but Vimeo has the muscle to back them up. The site has a clean layout that’s devoid of ads and benefits from an active user community that’s widely considered more professional and constructive than YouTube’s.

From this community emerges a lot of great original short and feature-length films. Vimeo also has an On-Demand section where users can purchase full-length movies and television shows. The majority of these are independently produced by Vimeo users, but some offerings are produced by major studios as well. Either way, Vimeo is a great place to find free, high-quality movies.

Plex is best known as a versatile and easy way to manage and watch your private collection of movies, music, photos, and other media. However, in 2019, the company launched its own ad-supported free streaming service with a collection of movies and TV shows from studios like MGM, Warner, Lionsgate, and Legendary.

It’s available globally, though title selection will vary heavily by region. You can access the collection of 20,000 free movies and TV shows from a browser or on any of the huge number of devices that support the Plex client software, like Apple TV, Roku, smart TVs, etc. All you need is a free Plex account and you’re good to go.

For those who already use Plex as their media server, the free ad-supported options can be added to existing server categories, making the experience completely seamless.

Though it may not be as well-known as the above services, Pluto TV is still worthy of your attention. Not only does it host free films on-demand, but it’s also a free live-TV streaming service, hosting content curated from across the web. While the channels vary wildly, we’re focused here on the movies. Pluto TV currently features multiple live movie channels, perfect if you want to watch  something but don’t know what.

There are two general-purpose movie channels, with the rest being focused on specific genres or categories, including action movies, Flicks of Fury, Horror 24/7, Classic Movies, Black Cinema, Gravitas Movies, and The Asylum. The service works in the U.S. as well as in many international locations.

Pluto TV’s on-demand movie library is relatively small and rotates frequently but offers just as much variety as its live movie channels. It is also available on a ton of devices in addition to your computer, including Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV , Roku devices , and more. To find out more about Pluto TV, see our full guide to the service.

Another up-and-comer, Tubi TV is very similar to Crackle in that it offers both free movies and TV episodes. No matter which device you use, chances are pretty good that you’ll be able to watch Tubi, as it’s available on Android, iOS, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Xfinity X1, Samsung smart TVs, Sony smart TVs, PlayStation, Xbox, and the web. As with the vast majority of services on this list, you’ll need to watch a few commercials, but that’s what keeps the service free.

Tubi boasts a programming lineup of more than 20,000 shows and movies and has content from over 200 partners, including MGM, Lionsgate, and Paramount. Hit films like Hancock and The Goonies  are there, as well as cult classics like Planet of the Apes , Fists of Fury , and more.

If you’re using this service to supplement Netflix rather than replace it, the Not on Netflix section will help you find new and interesting films to watch.

Just like Hoopla, Kanopy is not only free to use, but it’s also commercial-free if you have a library card. Originally founded in 2008 in Australia as an educational tool, Kanopy now offers a library of over 30,000 films through its partnerships with more than 200 libraries. There is a heavy focus on independent free movies and documentaries (the company even has access to many recent films from the A24 catalog ), but you’ll find all sorts of films available. Kanopy is available internationally, but the content may vary by location.

Love documentaries? So do we. You know what they say, truth is stranger than fiction. The aptly titled Top Documentary Films is hands down the best site for documentaries. Not every selection is movie-length, but a good documentary doesn’t have to be long — some of the best are under the 60-minute mark. Boasting a library of more than 3,000 films, the site also has a simple and straightforward layout and categorizes all of its films based on the subject matter, making it easy to find something you’re interested in right away. The content isn’t hosted by the site, but rather curated and embedded from other sites such as YouTube, Vimeo, Daily Motion, etc. It’s available internationally, but not all content will work in all locations.

Chances are you’re reading this article because you’re looking for a place to watch newly released movies online. While there’s nothing wrong with that, you definitely shouldn’t ignore all of the fantastic older films the internet has to offer. Archive.org offers a veritable treasure trove of old movies you’ve probably never heard of, as well as a handful that you’ll recognize.

The Archive — which is also the home of the famous Wayback Machine that shows you how the internet used to be — has silent films, black-and-white horror flicks, obscure sci-fi movies, and an assortment of other movies. They may not have all the fancy CGI we’ve all grown so accustomed to, but the occasional throwback is a great way to mix things up.

Open Culture is designed to be your one-stop-shop for all things free and cultured. The site offers hundreds of free online classes to enroll in, thousands of free e-books to read, and hours upon hours of lectures from prominent figures such as Carl Sagan and Leonard Bernstein. It also offers a ton of free movies. Here, you’ll find everything from silent films and Hitchcock-helmed projects to Westerns and film noir. The site even houses some early shorts by legends like Quentin Tarantino and Stanley Kubrick. Open Culture may be difficult to navigate, but with more than 1,000 free movies available, it’s definitely worth the slog.

Shocker Internet Drive-In  is a bit niche, and its website looks like it was made in the ’90s, but it’s a great resource. The site is updated weekly with featured horror classics, which are then made available for free download as WMV files at the website’s Snack Bar. The site is a fun little blast from the past, with weekly showings framed in a digital drive-in. Users can also purchase DVD copies of any film on the website for a mere $3. If you miss the old days of the internet when it was more like the Wild West and everything was less polished, this might be for you.
