Learning outside the classroom through adventurous activities is known to have significant educational benefits . It helps children develop technical, intellectual and social skills by overcoming challenges and sharing decisions.

Such activities might include various forms of orienteering , using a climbing wall or different forms of cycling – as well as team building, trust games and problem-solving tasks.

From a psychological perspective, they help pupils develop a “can do” attitude that can be applied to all aspects of school life. They instil a sense of determination which gives them the confidence to face up to challenges, express and deal with emotions, and a desire to succeed.

Adventurous activities also help pupils to overcome fear, anxiety and physical stress. Quite often this means putting children outside of their comfort zones and exposing them to scenarios they are not used to. These may be situations they perceive as too difficult or potentially dangerous, but are all part of teaching them about risks and safety.

It is a physical education teachers’ role to plan and put into action situations that can provide maximum mental development but with minimum risk. In the UK, the National Curriculum for physical education requires teachers to provide opportunities for taking part in outdoor and adventurous pursuits.

The idea is to present pupils with intellectual and physical challenges which encourage them to work in a team, building trust and problem solving skills.

But there are academic benefits too . This is a chance to promote cross-curricular teaching whereby pupils can improve their own learning and performance, improve their literacy, numeracy and communication skills – with applications for other core curriculum subjects such as mathematics, geography and science.

Alternatively, a focus on personal and social development using basic skills related to outdoor activities can be achieved through a number of trust games, team-building exercises and problem-solving activities which promote feelings of cooperation.

They also enhance pupils’ ability to work together and develop a sense of responsibility. Many of these are particularly suited to the beginning of the academic year for pupils making the transition from junior schools into secondary education, when confidence building is especially valuable.

Physical education teachers also need to be open to new kinds of exercise that children may enjoy at home, which can easily be transferred to increasing the appeal of PE at school – particularly for those children who seem to lack confidence.

Balancing skills

Young people are participating in very different physical activities outside of school compared to the types of sport taught as part of the formal PE curriculum, such as cricket or rugby. For example, many enjoy cycling in their free time, so providing the chance to incorporate this could make the subject more appealing to a broader section of pupils.

At the University of Brighton, trainee teachers have been introduced to this relatively new concept of “ physical education on wheels ”. The idea is to embrace the popularity of mountain biking, BMX biking, skateboarding, and scooting, which can all be viewed as adventurous forms of exercise. Yet few schools seem have recognised this as a means to increase pupils’ activity levels and tend to ignore the potential of introducing these activities into their PE lessons.

It’s also worth stressing that adventurous activities are ideal for involving all pupils (including those with additional learning needs). Minimal adaptations are required, and young people can work cooperatively at a level appropriate to their needs.

Yet many children are unable to enjoy this kind of experience – often because of understandable concerns from their schools about cost, expertise, facilities and time. But an adventurous approach to PE should not be restricted to schools with access to neighbouring forests or mountain ranges.

Adventurous activities can all be taught on a school site and introduced in a safe and enjoyable way even in schools that have limited outdoor space where lessons can be adapted for playgrounds and school halls.

In this way, teachers can ensure that everyone does the same activity with minimal adaptations to the environment, and without the need for specialist equipment. All pupils can contribute to a shared group outcome – and benefit from an adventurous approach to their physical education.

Outdoor and Adventure Overview

Outdoor and adventure activities are facets of the physical education curriculum concerned with walking, cycling, camping and water-based activities, orienteering, and outdoor challenge activities. Orienteering is an exciting activity that combines the geographical skills of map work, the physical activity of walking or running and the adventure of exploring unfamiliar locations. Outdoor Activities For Your Curriculum

The benefits of an outdoor education curriculum are extensive and well-documented. Learning outdoors improves academic performance, health, and childhood development. It can also instill a sense of civic responsibility and empathy and build ties within the community. Finally, getting outside is fun! We’ve put together a compilation of fun and educational ideas for you to get your students into the fresh air. We’ve tried to include outdoor education activities for everyone – science teachers, humanities teachers, and even art teachers!

OUTDOOR CLASSROOM IDEAS FOR ART & EXPRESSION

1. Train the next generation of nature photographers and photojournalists. Give your students a shot at capturing their own images around your school. Depending on their level, you can introduce them to the basics of composition and discuss the power of images in our society. If your school doesn’t have cameras for use, consider simply letting your students experiment with cheap disposable cameras. Check out The Guardian to pursue this outdoor educational activity.

2. Paint a mural for your school or community. Reach out to contacts in your community, or check with your administration. Students will take great pride in contributing a work of art to their school or community. Just remember to make sure everyone has a chance to participate and the project isn’t dominated by your most artistic pupils!

3. Let your students express themselves freely by sketching or journaling. A very simple way to get your students outside is to let them quietly reflect and journal outdoors. If you have an outdoor learning center or nearby park, this can be a recurring lesson. For a life-changing experience a little further away from home, EPI's Yellowstone Wildlife Ecology Programs often incorporate nature journaling into the day's activities.

4. Conduct a small-scale biological survey, or “bioblitz.” To get your students interested and invested in biodiversity, consider conducting a bioblitz. A bioblitz is a very concentrated biological survey. The goal is to count as many species from as many taxonomic groups as possible within the set parameters of the bioblitz (for example, in a given park over the course of several hours). National Geographic and the National Park Service have resources to get you started on this outdoor educational activity.

5. Introduce your students to cartography and earth observation systems. Developing your students’ spatial thinking skills will give them an important edge for years to come. Exploring maps and spatial relationships is modifiable and scalable to fit your classroom’s unique identity. Younger students can map storybooks or the playground, while more advanced students can map more abstract ideas (watersheds, historic routes, public perception) and use more advanced technology. 6. Participate in data collection or community science. Community science (or citizen science) is all the rage right now, so there are many ways to get involved in scientific research. In fact, check out our blog for tips on forging great science partnerships . If you're ready for something a little more adventurous, you can get your students involved in data collection that benefits ongoing scientific research by enrolling in an EPI student travel program .

7. Don’t let snow stand in your way! Take advantage of it! Incorporate a snow science lesson into your curriculum. The Montana Science Partnership has resources for you to develop a snow science curriculum (Module 5). If snow is fresh, you can look for tracks. Don't live in a snowy community? OUTDOOR CLASSROOM IDEAS FOR HUMANITIES & SOCIAL SCIENCE

8. Be tourists for the day, and have your students lead walking tours of your school or community. As part of your outdoor education curriculum, use the opportunity to practice public speaking. If your school building is historic, or there is a historic district nearby, you may have your students design and give walking tours. If you are a foreign language teacher, have them give a walking tour of your school or community in your language.

9. Maintain the health of local rivers and streams by hosting or joining a river or beach cleanup. All of EPI's Student and Teacher Expeditions include a community service project, from pulling invasive weeds to beach cleanups. And here in Missoula, Montana – where EPI's U.S. office is located – hundreds of volunteers get together in April to keep our local river healthy and safe. If you want to host your own cleanup, the Clark Fork Coalition has resources for you to get started on this outdoor educational activity.

10. Build life-long eating habits and awareness by conducting a lesson on nutrition and food systems. Visit a local farm or garden (or plant your own!) and let your students taste truly fresh foods. If planting your own garden is out of the question, reach out to local community gardens. In Missoula, Garden City Harvest runs several neighborhood farms and community gardens.

11. Try your hand at orienteering! Did you know that orienteering is a competitive sport? However, there is no need to be competitive – this is a great way to build teamwork and develop leadership and problem-solving abilities. What is Outdoor Adventure Education?

The English word adventure comes from the French term aventure , which evolved from the Latin term adventurus , which means simply “about to arrive” but which over time has come to connote an exciting event that contains elements of risk and/or danger and where the outcome is uncertain.

The term adventure is broad enough to cover any enterprise potentially fraught with risk, such as a business venture, major life undertaking, or even trying a new restaurant. But for our purposes in this book, and relative to OAE in general, adventure will imply a pursuit in an outdoor setting within an educational context.

Characteristics of adventure as generated by practitioners and scholars in OAE include the following:

  • Uncertainty of outcome (Hopkins and Putnam, 1993)
  • Compelling tasks primarily concerned with interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships (Priest and Gass, 2005)
  • A state of mind that begins with feelings of uncertainty about the outcome of a journey and always ends with feelings of enjoyment, satisfaction, or elation about the successful completion of that journey (see Colin Mortlock's Adventure Education and Outdoor Pursuits [1983])
  • A search for excellence, an expression of human dignity, an act of the whole person. The concept of adventure implies not only action and intensity but also returning triumphantly, coming home, re-entry. This re-entry includes a period of telling, of piecing together, of sifting the meaning of the story (Nold, 1978).

Most agree that adventure involves uncertainty. Priest and Gass focus on the nurturing and social aspects of adventure, citing how people are changed both within themselves and in their relationships with those who experienced the adventure with them. Joseph Nold speaks of the coming back, the idea that no adventure is complete without the telling of the tale. This telling, and retelling, of the story evokes the archetypal adventure story, the encountering of unforeseen events of which the outcome is uncertain, and upon return, sharing the story with others. Think of one of the first great adventure stories, Homer's Odyssey , a recounting of the adventurous exploits of the Greek soldier Odysseus (known to the Romans as Ulysses), and how many times this tale or similar ones have been retold.

Defining Outdoor Adventure Education

Adventure has long played a critical role in human development, but only recently have adventure and outdoor experiences shifted from necessary or utilitarian to primarily recreational. Consider the risk and danger our ancestors faced in getting close enough to kill a wild animal with a spear. In many ways, as technology has allowed humans to gain greater advantage over their natural environment, the world has become a far safer place, with a greater assurance of securing food, at least for some. With the advent of mechanization, our relationship to risk has significantly evolved with most outdoor adventures usually not becoming matters of personal survival. Where we once accepted risk in order to survive, we now pursue risk in order to thrive—to feel as though we are making the most of our lives. During this shift in our perspective on risk, the field of OAE originated.

OAE has been defined in many ways, including all of the following:

  • Direct, active, and engaging learning experiences that involve the whole person and have real consequences (Prouty, 2007)
  • . . . education that focuses on the development of interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships while participating in outdoor activities that include attributes of risk and challenge (Wagstaff and Attarian, 2009, p. 15)
  • . . . education that is conducted in a wilderness-like setting or through nature and physical skills development to promote interpersonal growth or enhance physical skills in outdoor pursuits (Gilbertson, Bates, McLaughlin, and Ewert, 2006, p. 8.)

Because it can be applied in a variety of settings and situations and because it remains true to the original concept of adventure, we use the following definition of OAE: A variety of teaching and learning activities and experiences usually involving a close interaction with an outdoor natural setting and containing elements of real or perceived danger or risk in which the outcome, although uncertain, can be influenced by the actions of the participants and circumstances .

Let's look more closely at our definition of OAE. First, in the teaching, learning, and experiencing that occur in OAE, education is of primary importance. Wagstaff and Attarian (2009), for example, suggest that OAE instructors serve three functions in the realm of adventure education: facilitating the experience, safeguarding the experience, and minimizing the impacts on the natural environment. Of course each of these functions involves making the experience as educational as possible for all participants, taking advantage of every opportunity to teach the hows, whens, and whys implicit in each experience. In a sense, OAE instructors often strive to explain the adventure activity in addition to actually doing the activity.

Second, note the (typically) close interaction with the outdoor environment. Although some climbing walls and rope course facilities are indoors, a natural setting serves as a key component in the education process for the vast majority of OAE programs—for reasons we shall explore later.

Third, in our definition and most others, OAE typically contains elements of real or perceived risk. Risk can be real and inherent to an activity, such as a rock fall in a rock-climbing area, or can be merely (mis)perceived by participants within a safe activity. That is, instructors can manage an adventure site to make activities seem risky when in fact there is a very small chance of actual injury or loss. One example is employing a top rope in rock climbing where there is little chance of rockfall and a competent person is belaying the climber. For the participant, it often seems quite risky and dangerous when, in reality, the activity is quite safe.

Fourth, in our definition of OAE, outcomes tend to be uncertain. Such factors as weather, terrain, participant abilities and attitudes, and equipment can make program outcomes quite unpredictable. Uncertainty plays an important role in adventure programs primarily because of what it can teach participants. Although often psychologically uncomfortable, uncertainty can force participants to confront their anxieties, analyze their decision-making abilities, and assess their physical, emotional, and leadership skills.

Of course the amount of risk involved in uncertain outcomes can be significantly influenced by the skills of the participants. Participants can use their intuition, training, personal abilities, and team resources to make good decisions and take effective action to deal with uncertain outcomes.

Circumstance and luck also play roles in uncertain outcomes. The ability to make accurate decisions tends to be largely affected by circumstance. Despite ambiguity inherent to many situations, the goal is always to gather as much information as possible, analyze the situation, make an informed and careful decision, and take the best possible action given the circumstances.

Outdoor Adventure Education: What it is & Why it’s so Important

Our 26th President, Teddy Roosevelt, once said of his time as a frontiersman, “I have always said I would not have been President had it not been for my experience in North Dakota.” Roosevelt’s adoption of a strenuous lifestyle early in his childhood, carried with him throughout his life, is pointed to by the man himself, and historians, as one of the defining reasons for his success.

Today though, unlike in Teddy’s time, there are so many distractions and roadblocks to kids getting outside and experiencing the transformative power of the outdoors. Smartphones, streaming services, and social media apps, all encourage a sedentary lifestyle in our kids.

So, how can parents help guide their children towards a more active lifestyle that helps them build better and more positive habits? The answer is outdoor adventure education! And it has more benefits for your child than you might realize.

What is Outdoor Adventure Education?

Outdoor adventure education is a direct, active, and engaging learning experience that takes place in nature and involves kids participating in activities that include a certain amount of risk and challenge, such as rock climbing in California’s San Jacinto Mountains, or mountain biking through the many trails of Idyllwild. 

Primarily experienced in a group, outdoor adventure education develops interpersonal and interpersonal relationships and promotes personal growth while enhancing physical skills.

As opposed to kids sitting inside a classroom or a daycare, they’re brought outdoors to take part in activities like geocaching, which simulates the risks of adventure through the San Bernardino landscape. Instead of sitting idle at a desk or behind a screen, kids are put into situations that challenge them both physically and mentally, pushing them out of their comfort zone and past what they believe their limits to be.

Why it’s Important

Numerous studies have been conducted on the benefits of outdoor adventure education for children, and the results are every parent’s dream. Not only are kids more enthusiastic about learning outdoors because of how fun the activities are but, that enthusiasm translates into amazing results.

Improves School Performance

Studies have shown that kids who participate in outdoor education programs have an overall enhanced achievement, including better test scores, a better attitude towards school, and a better attendance record. The reason is that outdoor adventure education utilizes a greater range of the child’s intelligence.

Improves Health

This probably goes without saying but, kids who learn outdoors tend to be healthier than kids who spend a majority of their time indoors. Being active outside increases children’s physical and social health, while also helping them form healthier habits that continue long after they’ve left summer camp.

Supports Child Development

Outdoor adventure education supports emotional, physical, and intellectual growth in children, instilling in them a “can-do” attitude that they can apply to all aspects of their lives. They develop a better sense of self, which allows them to better manage fear, stress, and anxiety, as well as instilling in them a sense of determination and a desire to succeed.

Spark Curiosity through Outdoor Learning

With so much to see outside, it’s no wonder that students are curious about what is happening in the world around them! When they explore nature, they are often full of questions: Why are the clouds so fluffy today? What birds are in our schoolyard? Is the water in that stream clean or dirty? What animals live here? Plus, the Next Generation Science Standards identifies observing phenomena and asking questions as essential science practices. This spark activity encourages students to observe and question the world around them while spending time in the same outdoor spot over time.

Outdoor learning offers many benefits beyond inspiring curiosity, including enhanced academic skills and productivity. Outdoor time also fosters improved mood, social connections, and physical well-being. Because students may lack access to outdoor spaces in other parts of their lives, integrating outdoor education into the school day can be crucial for their mental and physical health.

Sometimes taking students outside can feel like organized chaos. A sit spot can help your students’ observations and exploration be more focused. A sit spot is a specific location for focused time in nature, and provides an opportunity for students to make meaningful observations, notice seasonal changes, and spark curiosity. Students also feel a sense of connection to their little corner of the world, which can lead to more detailed observations, stewardship, and a sense of place.

  • Find a suitable area for the sit spots.
  • Gather or make markers for their sit spot such as wooden sticks, string, or painted rocks to be placed at their spot.
  • If possible, have old towels, blankets, or yoga mats for students to sit on.
  • Gather paper or nature journals, colored pencils, crayons, markers, clipboards, and sticky notes (if you are creating a Wonder Wall, see below) for each student.

As questions arise during their observations, invite students to add them on the Wonder Wall. The Wonder Wall provides a space to collect and display student questions that you can revisit, answer later, or turn into investigations. Designate a space for your Wonder Wall and encourage students to write and post their questions there. Between the open sky and the cracks in the concrete, there is plenty for students to observe and wonder about, wherever you are! Here are some tips for outdoor student learning: 

  • Be inclusive. Consider all your students and strategize how to include everyone before going outside. Recognize, acknowledge, and give space to students who are uncomfortable outdoors or use outdoor space differently than you do. 
  • Establish expectations. Co-develop an outdoor community learning agreement with your students. Before you go out, talk to your students about ways to minimize their impact on nature (for example, not picking live plants or disturbing animals), boost safety (for example, staying together as a group), and help each other discover fascinating things.
  • Provide roles. Develop tasks to keep students engaged and empowered, such as carrying supplies, keeping track of the time, or watching for ways to minimize their impact on nature. 
  • Use observation cues. Before you go out, teach younger students about deer ears (cupping their hands behind their ears to better funnel in sounds), owl eyes (making binoculars with their hands or old bath tissue rolls), fox feet (walking quietly and slowly, as if stalking prey), and bunny noses (wrinkling up noses and sniffing all around). Encourage older students to engage their senses during observations: What can you see? What do you hear? How does it feel? What does it smell like? Early on, you may want to focus observations on one or more of these senses: a scavenger hunt for things you see or a listening walk.
  • Embrace good distractions. Build in extra time for unexpected events and teaching opportunities. 
  • Set them up for success. Begin with short periods of observing. Starting with a short experience allows students time to practice skills and doesn’t leave too much time for distractions. Extend the time as students build interest and demonstrate focus.
  • Rain, rain go away. Rather than letting the weather keep you inside, be prepared. Be ready with weather appropriate gear such as ponchos (trash bags work too), boots, gloves, hats, and coats for students who lack them or forget about the outdoor plans. If possible, keep umbrellas on hand.

Choose a Sit Spot

Students should choose their sit spots, a place where they are comfortable and feel safe. You may want to encourage them to places where there are opportunities to observe a variety of plants and animals. Encourage them to try out a few spots before settling on one. Also, if possible, make sure there is an arms-length distance between sit spots so each student is able to observe and engage with their unique spot. Once students have chosen their sit spot, have them mark it so they can return here over time.

Observation Journaling

At their sit spots, give students 1 to 3 minutes to look, listen, smell, and feel the world around them without writing or drawing. Then ask them to start writing down or drawing their observations–anything they find interesting and anything that makes them wonder. For the first sit spot, limit the amount of time given for observations, usually 5 minutes is enough time. You may want to provide more guidance, especially during their first sit. You could ask younger students to find the colors of the rainbow, while older ones can respond to prompts such as:

  • I notice that… (statements)
  • I wonder… (questions)
  • I think that… (answers)
  • It reminds me of… (connections)

More Sit Spot Activities 

  • 5-4-3-2-1 Write or draw 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2, things you can smell, 1 emotion you feel
  • Comparison Choose 2 similar objects (rocks, leaves, mushrooms, flowers) and compare the similarities and differences of those objects.
  • Poem Write a poem about your view, your sit spot, or an observation you made.

At the end of the first observation time, ask them to circle one thing that inspired them to ask a question. Then, in pairs, have the students share their circled observation, question, and why they chose it. Hand each student a sticky note to write their question down and add to the Wonder Wall back in the classroom. 

Throughout the year, aim to visit the same spot repeatedly to deepen observations, compare seasons, and try different activities. Even a few visits allow students to note changes and make new observations.

Regular visits to a sit spot, ideally weekly, can provide a wealth of inspiration for generating questions that arise from student observations. We recommend having students maintain a nature journal with a dedicated page for each sit spot visit and to add their new questions to the Wonder Wall. These questions can be the launching pad for class, group, or individual science investigations.

To guide them through their own investigations, consider using Students as Scientists . This resource offers lessons, slides, and handouts designed to help your students ask and answer their own questions, making authentic science accessible in your classroom. Students will explore the entire science process, from making observations to data analysis and sharing results. The resource is available for the K-5th grade band and 6th-12th grade band.

The outdoor adventure education concentration in the physical education major is designed to provide students with an opportunity to gain experience and knowledge in outdoor adventure education appropriate for physical education settings. This program prepares students in adventure models and theory as well as develops leadership and practical skills needed to effectively implement this type of curriculum in schools.

Practical experiences include, but are not limited to, inclusive outdoor education, practicum in adventure activities or outdoor adventure activities for teachers, and several outdoor activity classes.

Students must fulfill all the requirements for the Physical Education [PEM]   major. Additional courses required for the outdoor adventure education concentration are listed below.
