Paying for Cultural Attractions

Hi! This is my first essay write-up after 3 years of getting a 6 in my writing in IELTS. I am planning to take the IELTS this august so I hope you can comment and advise regarding my writing. Foreign visitors should pay more than local visitors for cultural and historical attractions. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Nowadays, tourism is the number one source of income of most towns especially in my country- Philippines. Visitors from foreign land and even the locals are being charged with entrance fees by merely visiting the beaches, zoos, amusements parks and even the historical places in a certain town in exchange for the preservation cost and profit in favor of the town being visited. Apart from this, some say that visitors from the place should pay less than those foreign ones, I strongly agree on this idea. Tourist attractions in a town or city are being maintained and taken cared of by locals so they should primarily benefit from it. The favors should be given back to its people through the discounted prices they can enjoy every time they visit tourist attraction in the local area. Secondly, the inhabitants in the area are the ones who paid taxes for the benefit of starting the development of their hometown. Needless to say that residents are already paying a portion of the ticket money through the monthly contributions they pay. Lastly, by lowering the cost of visitation fees of the locals, they will be encouraged to invite friends, workmates and other potential visitors in their own place. It provides a sense of confidence and pride to invite others and be proud with the support that the local government gives to its people. In the end, it is logical to say that the locals must enjoy a lesser charge than foreign visitors in visiting historically important places including museums, art exhibitions and parks. The ideas does return the favor of patriotism. Besides, government business us nothing if its people are not happy to support it.

Visiting New or Familiar Places

I have an essay, hope you can fix it and give me a band for it. Thank you! Some people like to travel to somewhere new and different when they go on holiday, while others prefer familiar places. Do you think there are more advantages or disadvantages to visiting new places? Most people take a holiday every year during the summer, and when they book on holiday, they have a choice. They can go to a place that they have known before, or they can go to a place that is new to them to discover. This second option has positive effect to us, however, it still have a negative effect. In my opinion, travel is about exploration. Although it is reassuring to go to a place you know, but it is less things to discover and eat. Example, you can have new experiences, eat new food you have never try, visit unusual scenery if you go to a new place. More than that, the most essential advantage of visiting new places is to develop the understanding of the world. Today, you can find and learn everything from books and internet, but the best way to find out and learn about other culture is go to a new place, discover about their language, clothes, music, and so on. However, there are some disadvantages when you go to a new place. Firstly, it is more stressful when you plan for the hold trip, example, you have to book a train or a plane ticket or book a room in a hotel. Secondly, it is easy to make mistakes. Although you can find information on the internet, but the information is not always true. When you have been to a place before, you will know which restaurants and trips to avoid. In conclusion, I think there are more advantages than disadvantages when you go to a new place because it will improve your knowledge and make a change. If you keep doing the same things, you cannot develop new and interests thing in the world.

Visiting Difficult Places Essay

Can anyone give feedback on my writing. Today more and more tourists are visiting places where conditions are difficult, such as the Sahara desert or the Antarctic. What are the advantages and disadvantages for tourists who visit such places? It is generally said that humans are always striving to enrich their learnings through exploring new places. It may be the reason that more people tend to visit remote places where living conditions are harsh with difficult accessibility. There are advantages and disadvantages in this approach. Exploration of these places equips humans with realities and true meaning of their lives. One may learn his own capabilities and limitations. They may also satisfy their self-actualization needs and get to know themselves. Siberia is such example, where despite of difficult situations people tends to visit and upon returning, they contribute more positively to their own communities. When large number of people come to these places, it is also good for their local economy. Many businesses grow with influx of tourism industry and it brings positive impact of lives of residence. For example, there are now many tour operator companies are going to launch their business in Sahara Desserts and many new jobs are created in area. Some disadvantages are also associated with this, if more people are visiting these places than it becomes difficult for Government to ensure their safety. As these area lacks basic infrastructure hence more lives are put in danger. Most people are not fully experienced to survive in these brutal conditions and they add more burden on local services. Secondly, most visitors don’t take care of local customs and annoy local communities. To conclude, we may say that when tourists visit to isolated lands, it improvises themselves and brings positive changes of local community. But at the same it brings challenges for local community.

Travel to Remote Places Essay

Nowadays, scientists and tourists can travel to remote natural environments such as the South Pole. What are advantages and disadvantages of this development? Over the past few years , there seems to have been a significant increase in tourist trips to the places where conditions are difficult or unbearable such as the Sahara desert or Antarctic, This type of tourism is expected to become more popular in the upcoming coming years. But like any emerging phenomenon, it also has several advantages and disadvantages. I will try my best to elaborate on each of them briefly. Let’s take a look at the advantageous of traveling to Sahara or Antartica: Based on the latest statistics from Columbia University which was done on 300 volunteers, it was concluded that traveling to remote areas can be extremely dangerous due to various reasons. In fact, trip to difficult and remote areas such as Sahara desert or Antarctic can reduce the stress and anxiety of tourists. In addition, tourists can challenge their will and power by going to these areas. Dr. LeoFang ( 2009 ) , who is a psychologist at the Wolford Clinic in Tennessee, conducted several scientific studies which published the results in the American Psychological Association shows that people are frustrated with life after traveling to difficult and remote areas feel more empowered in life an increase life expectancy in them. Traveling to remote areas has some drawbacks: Traveling to remote areas such as Sahara desert or Antarctic can be extremely deadly to the traveler because the harsh nature of these areas contrasts with the urban spirit and comfort that tourists are accustomed to. Besides, any injuries or damage to the body due to the distance from the hospital can be dangerous for the injured person. another problem with such trips is that they are limited to natural attractions. Tourists cannot enjoy other aspects of tourist trips such as shopping malls and historic centers and Etc. In conclusion, traveling to the desert, which is becoming more and more popular among tourists every day, has some advantages and disadvantages that tourists can pay attention to them when deciding to make such trips to have a more comfortable and pleasant trip.

Importance of Tourism Essay

Many developing countries place a lot of importance on tourism. Why is this? Do you think that this is a positive or negative development? Owing to over interest in the tourism, individuals are gaining lot of knowledge.which rises the inclination of people towards belief that it has a devastating impact on them.others, however including I harbour the thought that it is positive infested to them. In the starting paragraph with this statement people believe that the importance of the tourism in the developing countries is more instead of poorer countries. Initially, although, tourism is liked just for enjoyment by certain people still some individuals think that they adapt to new knowledge by travelling .for example when individuals go to any cultural place,they can know about culture and moral values along with history.as a result, they can explore their knowledge.what is another factor? apparently,during the travel time individuals meet with new people.various kinds of language are learned by person because when they meet with new people they try to speak language of them.consequently, they enhance their communication skills. On the other hand, if developing countries give more important on tourism, the life experiences would increase because when person go to another country l.they not only learn about new language but also adapt diverse kinds of things such as how to treat with another and learn many kinds of traveling experience. hence, the tourism have positive effect on them. The cynics of the aforementioned notion, on the other hand, oppose the view, they are of the opinion that if the most people travel from one country to another country. the environment pollution would rise with it because they would travel on any vehicle not by walking.therefore, people would reduce the tourism. To epitomise, indeed somehow I strongly believe that tourism is beneficial for exploring knowledge still devastating effects it had on environment are such that neglecting them would be considered folly.

Pros and Cons of International Tourism

International tourism has brought enormous benefit to many places. At the same time, there is concern about its impact on local inhabitants and the environment. Do the disadvantages of international tourism outweigh the advantages? In some countries, tourism plays a big role in keeping their economy stable. Places like Greece, Maldives, and Malta rely heavily on international visits due to the fact that other industries have not been much developed in those areas. Although it dose pose a concerning risk environmentally and locally, I would say that the benefits are far greater than the disadvantages. To begin, international tourism brings a lot of money to the country. Plane tickets, visas, and other accommodations brings income to the country in the form of tax, this supports the economic growth, allowing more money to circulate in the market. Furthermore, as tourist needs a lot of services, it opens a lot of business prospects to the locals. Places like hotels, villas, and restaurants are needed for the guests, these places are also a way to decrease unemployment rate as they need a lot of human resources to run. International tourists are also beneficial as they can promote the various tourism spots to other people. Publication of the areas can lead to more visits allowing popularity to rise. Tourists may also experience the cultural differences, allowing it to be more well-known internationally. Of course not everything in international tourism is beneficial, the minus point is it increases the risk of environment damage and interference in local communities. Pollution, excessive land-use, and waste are some of the threats coming from the guests. This can disturb local residents as they are the ones who will have to bear the consequences of this damaging behavior. In conclusion, international tourism poses great advantages to both the government and local communities. However, to eliminate the downside, strict rules and punishments are needed to ensure the environment and people living in the area are not being disturbed.

In the past animals were being used to travel which made the whole process quite difficult. However, at present majority of the individuals are travelling because of the new updated facilities being provided which made transport quite convenient and at the same time it provided an affordable package as well. Furthermore, there are many advantages of travelling like an individual can learn a foreign language, interact with other people of different cultures and tradition.Moreover, they can practice a foreign language and experience a totally different journey along with that they willbe also able to discover a new place To conclude, though only a few used to travel in the past due to less services being provided to them but recently a huge number of individuals are ready to go to a new place and travel for long hours in order to reach their desired goals

More and more travelers now prefer offbeat destinations in hills and deserts. They visit remote and hitherto unexplored places with sensitive ecology. While traveling to such places is a unique and unforgettable experience for the travelers, these trips also have a negative impact on indigenous communities.

Many travelers now prefer to take the less-trodden path. They visit remote islands, deserts and mountains where there are hardly any facilities for tourists. Travelers prefer such destinations because they want to enjoy the untainted beauty of Mother Nature. Unfortunately, these places also tend to have fragile ecology. For example, recently there has been a dramatic increase in the number of people visiting shrines and other places in the Himalayas. These tourists cause considerable damage to the ecology of these places. To cater to their needs, more facilities are being built. For example, new roads and resorts are being built. This hurts the local ecology and often leads to catastrophic natural disasters.

Travelers visiting remote places also pose a threat to the indigenous communities. These people have no contact with the world outside and they have no immunity against many pathogens affecting us. Travelers often introduce germs that are deadly to the natives and cause massive outbreaks of epidemics that can even wipe out these communities. Sometimes, tribal people who are the natives of these places do not take too kindly to travelers. For example, India’s Andaman Nicobar Islands are home to some tribal communities that shun all contacts with the world outside. Travelers trying to befriend them often run the risk of getting murdered. Travelers have an impact on local cultures too. For example, tourists may bring in unhealthy foods and beverages with them. Over time, these foods and drinks will seriously alter traditional and healthy eating habits of natives. Even their style of clothing may change.

In conclusion, eco-tourism definitely has its plus points. However, it has some downsides too. Ecologically sensitive areas are ill-equipped to cope with the influx of travelers. Any attempt to build tourist facilities in such places can lead to natural disasters. Tourists also expose natives to bacteria and viruses that are deadly to them.

It is possible that as technology evolves, traditional civilization may be missing. Technology and tradition are conflicting forces; you are not able to have both together. People have varying opinions on this matter. However, from my perspective, I completely disagree with this statement.

From one angle, nowadays technology plays an essential role in our lives. Our daily routines heavily rely on technology. For instance, technology offers numerous benefits, making tasks easier and more efficient. Additionally, technology has revolutionized communication, education, and healthcare. We can easily find a friend from another country by using technology, and it is possible to access education from the internet. People can access a wealth of knowledge and information at their fingertips. Technology facilitates communication with individuals overseas.

From another angle, technology makes life more effortless and comfortable. By using technology, we have been able to reduce the time, action, and energy required for tasks. At present, we have laptops, phones, and computers, which enable us to easily complete our work. For example, we can quickly find any kind of information or complete various tasks using the internet. For this reason, technology has more benefits.

In summary, technology has fundamentally changed our lives, offering time-saving solutions, revolutionizing communication, education, and healthcare, and enabling global connectivity

IELTSDATA READING PASSAGE 105-ECOTOURISM.

If you still believe the once-commonly held misconception that tourism is only an indulgence for the wealthy, you are out of step with the times! The tourism market is accessible to, and indeed marketed toward, many different sections of the community. Adventurers, fitness freaks, nature-lovers, and business people all contribute to a rapidly expanding sector of the global economy.

Section A This billion-dollar industry, whilst affected slightly by the unforeseen events of 11 September 2001, has experienced significant growth since the late 1980s. The subsequent economic benefits for governments are well-documented as tourism boosts foreign investment and foreign exchange. Large-scale resorts and civil infrastructure were often the only response to successful marketing and increased tourist demand. It is not surprising then that the direct impact on the environment and regional or indigenous populations became a contentious issue. Governments and big business became the target of environmentalists and activists who argued that mass tourism was not (and is not) sustainable. As hordes of tourists descended on often overcrowded beaches and overused parklands, this became apparent. Eco-tourism was born.

Section B The broad concept of eco-tourism as a nature-based, culturally sensitive form of tourism was taken up enthusiastically because there appeared to be few losers. Governments were given a convenient escape route as eco-tourism appeased the environmentalists and local communities but still provided income. Environmentalists saw eco-tourism as an alternative to mass tourism and its resource-exploiting ways. Local communities envisaged receiving at least a percentage of the tourist dollars, creating job opportunities and giving them control over the impact on their own communities. It seemed that the benefits of mass tourism were going to be expanded in the new world of eco-tourism to include cultural, social and environmental elements.

Section C As evidence of the benefits of eco-tourism unfolded, the practice has spread. So much so that the United Nations nominated 2002 as the International Year of Eco-tourism. Perhaps inevitably, the meaning of ecotourism became less clear as it enveloped the globe. It could be argued that the form of eco-tourism adopted in some cases was found wanting in certain aspects and the need for agreement on a tighter definition resulted. The eco-tourist is one who does not wish to contribute to the negative impact of large-scale tourism. He/she generally travel in small groups to low-key developments and attempts to “tread lightly” on the earth. These smaller-scale developments are environmentally responsible with a view to sustainability in all of the resources used. Their landscaping often relies on the use of native flora and they incorporate recycling methods and energy-efficient practices. Within the eco-tourists, holiday experience will be an element of education about the local environment. The emphasis is on conservation and the part that humans play in keeping ecosystems functioning. If the area is of cultural or social importance, this too is highlighted. The eco-tourist doesn’t condone the exploitation of the indigenous or local community. Far from it, they insist that the host culture is acknowledged and respected. The repatriation of funds to external sources is frowned upon. Wherever possible, the benefits of an eco-tourists holiday should be shared with the regional community — the hosts.

Section D All of these elements promote minimal impact on human resources as well as on physical, cultural and environmental ones. They support conservation through education and experience. Despite the best of intentions, as the popularity of eco-tourism spreads, there is concern that the eco-tourist will have a more adverse effect on the environment. Critics argue that unethical tour operators wanting to take advantage of the trendy eco-tourism market print brochures that espouse the ethics of eco-tourism and show familiar emblems of green frogs and crocodiles to promote themselves but do little else. If such operators are not held accountable, the industry will not survive. Open and honest eco-tourism marketing, as well as world-recognized accreditation, must be endorsed and implemented. The sheer volume of tourists wanting to visit unique, unspoiled environments is also a cause for concern. Evidence of the need to restrict the number of visitors to sensitive areas exists in many eco-tourist attractions already. Hikers and bushwalkers in Mount Kenya National Park have caused damage by straying from set trails and leaving food scraps behind. The number of Orca whales visiting Canada has declined in recent migratory seasons, as the restrictions placed on whale-watching boats and organizers are thought to be inadequate.

Section E Eco-tourism does not guarantee sustainable tourism and it should not be viewed as a complete cure for the problems that have beset tourism. Until all stakeholders agree to a definition of eco-tourism, insist that ecotourism operators abide by a strict code of ethics and carefully monitor the impact of eco-tourism (and all tourism), fragile ecosystems will continue to be besieged by tourists. There must be an educational program to promote ecologically-sustainable tourism across the board so that the underlying principle in ALL forms of tourism is the management of resources. Eco-tourism can bring wealth to areas where there is nothing else but natural attractions. The reasons for visiting The Galapagos Islands in Ecuador can only be explained by an interest in nature itself. The subsequent tourist dollars, if re-injected into the community, can mean the survival of such habitats. Licenses and entry fees to some sites have, in many cases, replaced government funding as their source of income. Countries as diverse as Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica and Kenya are developing strategies to identify and cope with the constraints that inevitably come with a long-term vision of sustainable tourism. Eco-tourism has played an important role in developing an awareness for sustainable tourism practices but governments, tourist agencies, and operators must be willing to join forces with eco-tourists to ensure that natural attractions are protected from their own popularity.

Ecotourism IELTS Reading Passage: IELTS Reading Answers

IELTS exam is an internationally acclaimed English language proficiency test that the British Council conducts in association with other agencies in various countries. IELTS stands for International English Language Test System. People and students who wish to move to an English-speaking country like the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and so on appear for this exam.

More than 1000 institutes, educational and otherwise, accept the scores of this test as evidence of English language proficiency. The exam has four different sections, and the examinee has to appear for all of them. The four sections consist of IELTS Speaking , IELTS Reading, IELTS Writing, and IELTS Listening. The Reading, Writing and Listening sections are completed on the same day without breaks. The Speaking section is either scheduled on the same day of the exam or a week before or after the exam date.

To understand the Reading Section of the IELTS exam better, let’s take a look at a reading passage, “Ecotourism”.

Ecotourism Reading Passage Answers

Tourism is just for wealthy people. If you still consider this old misconception, then you are out of sync with modern times. Today, tourism is easily accessible to diverse sectors of humanity. Adventure lovers, nature freaks, entrepreneurs, etc., are responsible for the rapidly developing sectors of the world’s economy.

Tourism is one of the biggest money-making industries. It has witnessed notable growth since the later part of the 1980s. However, due to some inevitable circumstances on 11th September of 2001, it got affected mildly. The consequent financial advantages for governments are very well registered as tourism promotes foreign financing and transactions.

Extensive resorts and public infrastructure were the only acknowledgement to thriving marketing and improved vacationist’s demands. It is no astonishment that the immediate impact on the environment and local or native communities became an argumentative concern. Hence, the Government and extensive businesses became the primary targets of the ecologists and eco-activists who debated that mass tourism is not a sustainable option. This was because vacationists frequently congested the beaches and parklands and exploited the natural resources. This led to the origin of ecotourism.

The idea of ecotourism as an environment-based, ethically delicate figure of tourism was driven up with enthusiasm since there seemed to be some sufferers. Governments were provided suitable escape plans as ecotourism satisfied the eco-conservationists and regional populations but still rendered earnings. Eco-conservationists observed ecotourism as an option to mass tourism as well as its natural resource abusing ways. Regional populations thought of getting at least a part of the vacationist’s money, generating employment possibilities and providing them control over the impact on their own communities. It appeared that the advantages of mass tourism were to be developed in the modern phase of ecotourism to include ethical, communal and ecological elements.

As proof of the benefits of eco-tourism became available, the practice grew in popularity. The United Nations declared 2002 to be the International Year of Ecotourism. As ecotourism spread over the world, the meaning of the term became less apparent. An eco-tourist is a person who does not want to add on to the negative impact of large scale tourism. An eco-tourist usually travels the local areas with small groups.

Such people travel in an attempt to ‘tread lightly on the earth. These local regions they travel are more sustainable in nature since the resources are utilised to the maximum capacity.  Their landscaping methods involve recycling and energy conservation practices. For such eco-tourists, holiday travelling is more of a learning experience of the local environment.

The Matching Information type of questions in the IELTS reading requires the test-taker to match the Information according to the question statements, which are typically in the form of Information that describe an action or an outcome or anything else significant. The test-taker should scan the passage, locate the necessary information to match with the given options. 

Summary Completion  

The summary completion questions are one of the most prevalent types of questions in the IELTS reading test, where the test-taker has to fill in the blank spaces to complete the summary with relevant words taken from the passage. The test-taker should scan and skim the passage, understand the paraphrasing, choose the appropriate word and complete the summary.

Answer explanation:  Paragraph B states that, in ‘ Cuba’ , which is the second most popular tourist destination, ecotourism is seen as an ‘ environmental education opportunity ’ (local education) to ‘ heighten both visitors’ and residents’ awareness of environmental and conservation issues ’ (help tourists as well as local),and even to inspire conservation action. Ecotourism has also been credited with promoting peace, by ‘ providing opportunities for educational and cultural exchange ’. Hence, the answer is A (Cuba).

Answer explanation:  Paragraph F mentions that the market segment for Indonesian ecotourism consists of three groups. The first group is the silent generation that consists of 55-64 year old people who are ‘ wealthy enough’ (rich travellers) and well-educated. While the second group consists of the ‘baby boom generationll’, people of 35-54 years, who travel with their family and children to relieve stress, the third group is the ‘X generationll’, aged 18-29 years, who are generally students who travel with a monthly expenditure of US$300-500 (poor travellers). Answer explanation:  Paragraph C tells about South America’s shortcomings related to tourism. ‘Histoplasma capsulatum, a dimorphic fungus’ , is the ‘most common’ endemic mycoses in the United States. Most recently, ‘outbreaks’ have been reported in healthy travellers who returned from Central and South America after engaging in recreational activities associated with spelunking, adventure tourism, and Ecotourism . This proves that in South America, one can easily get fungus at any place. Hence, the answer is C (South America).

Answer explanation: Paragraph E points out that in East Africa , ‘steps are being taken ’ for reducing ‘ illegal hunting’ (unlawful poaching) . Allowing wildlife populations to recover would allow the generation of significant economic benefits through trophy hunting and potentially ‘ecotourism’ (method). Hence, the answer is B (East Africa).

Answer explanation: Paragraph B informs that, in Cuba, ‘tourists’ safety and health are guaranteed’ . Answer location: Paragraph G

Answer explanation: Paragraph G reveals that Belize is the ‘ wonderful place for a Hamanasi honeymoon’ . The honeymooners are offered ‘a bottle of champagne upon arrival, three meals daily’ (comfortable), ‘ private service’ on one night of your stay and ‘a choice of adventures depending on the length of your stay’ . It also offers ‘six-night and seven night honeymoon packages’ . Hence, the answer is D (with private and comfortable service).

8 Answer: A

Answer location: Paragraph G 

Answer explanation: Paragraph G mentions that Gregory Pereira, an extremely knowledgeable tour guide in Belize, says that all of the tours on St.Kitts include transportation by specially modified Land Rovers, a picnic of island pastries and heal fruit, fresh tropical juices , CSR, a qualified island guide and a full liability insurance coverage for participants. Hence, the answer is A (eating the local fruits at the same time).

9 Answer: B 

Answer explanation: Paragraph B points out that in Cuba, ‘ ecotourism’ has the ‘ potentia l’ to alleviate poverty by bringing money into the economy and ‘ creating jobs’ . Answer location: Paragraph D 

Answer explanation: It is given in paragraph D that the keen eye and intimate knowledge of ‘ ecotourism’ is more potent amidst this (South American) fantastic biodiversity, as we ‘explore’ remote realms rich in wildlife ‘rather than a nature adventure’ .Hence, the answer is ‘adventure’.

11 Answer: Sustainable 

Answer explanation: From paragraph D, we come to know that ecotourism is more about fantastic biodiversity rather than a nature adventure. A ‘sustainable tour is significant for ecotourism’ , one in which we can grow hand in hand with nature and our community, respecting everything that makes us privileged. Hence, the answer is ‘sustainable’.

12 Answer: Tropical Forest 

Answer explanation: Paragraph D informs that the ‘primary threats’ (of destruction) to ‘ South America’s tropical forests’ is deforestation. Deforestation has shrunk territories belonging to indigenous peoples and wiped out more than 90% of the population. Many are taking leading roles in ‘ sustainable tourism’ (ecotourism) even as they introduce ‘protected regions’ (the tropical forests) to more travellers. Hence, the answer is ‘tropical forest’.
