Telstra offers a selection of business broadband plans for all different connection types, including ADSL , mobile broadband and the NBN. All are available on no-lock-in, month-to-month contracts.

For fixed-line broadband connections, you'll receive a modem router with your service as well as a static IP address for your business. If you cancel your contract within 24 months of connecting, you'll need to pay out the remaining cost of the included modem at a rate of $9 per month remaining.

Some business broadband bundles also include the peace of mind of switching to the Telstra mobile network during a fixed-line outage, unlimited uploads with any uploads you make not counted as part of your monthly quota, and the ability to include business apps like Office 365 in your monthly broadband bill.

As the country's largest provider of broadband and mobile services, Telstra is available practically everywhere in Australia, making it an easy choice for small business owners.

Because Telstra has traditionally run a lot of the fixed-line infrastructure in Australia, it has always charged a premium price for its plans, which it justified by the premium network it offered to its customers. Telstra is the largest telco in Australia, and it generally offers a high-quality service with dependable speeds… for a price. Yes, there’s no getting around the fact that Telstra has some of the most expensive NBN plans in Australia, with all the company’s plan prices sitting above average in their given tiers.

But what Telstra offers in return are fast download speeds, plenty of perks and optional add-ons. Aside from its gigabit plan, each of Telstra’s NBN plans offer the maximum download speed available at all times in their respective tiers, and at the time of writing, it is the only provider to offer a typical evening speed of 250Mbps on its NBN 250 plan . It also has the fastest NBN 1000 plan on the table.

While Telstra’s NBN plans aren’t especially competitive in terms of price, they’re hard to beat in terms of inclusions. All of its NBN plans now come with the Telstra Smart Modem 3, which Telstra says uses Wi-Fi 6 to deliver strong speeds to all corners of your home.

As you can see indicated above, Telstra’s NBN plans cost above the average in comparison to other providers in every respective speed tier. In most cases, Telstra is also the most expensive option no matter what speed tier you choose. 

It’s fair to say that Telstra isn’t a good choice if you’re looking for a cheap NBN plan , but if your top priority is fast, reliable speed, then we’d argue that Telstra’s NBN plans are great value.

That’s partly because its NBN 25, NBN 50, NBN 100 and NBN 250 plans all report maxed-out evening speeds, and as mentioned above, Telstra is the only provider which can make that claim for its NBN 250 plan. Telstra’s NBN 1000 plan quotes a typical download speed of 700Mbps during the evening hours, a figure that far exceeds its small competition in this tier. Aussie Broadband and Origin are closest to catching up, both with a typical evening speed of 600Mbps.

Telstra’s also a good value option if you’re looking for a plan that comes with included benefits or optional add-ons. For example, all plans come with the Telstra Smart Modem 3, which is Wi-Fi 6 enabled and comes with 4G backup.

You’ll also get a two-month subscription to Binge , a three-month subscription to Apple TV Plus and a four-month subscription to Spotify Premium – all for free when you first sign up. If you want a home phone landline, that’s also included at no extra cost. There’s also Telstra’s rewards program, where you can earn points to redeem on devices at the Rewards Store.

If you’re considering signing up for a Telstra NBN plan, try to do so while there’s a discount available. You can sometimes score Telstra’s fastest NBN plans for just one dollar, though that rock-bottom price is typically only available for your first month on the service.

The discount tends to include Telstra’s NBN 50, NBN 100 and NBN 250 plans, and you can save as much as AU$139 in this deal. While the upfront saving is massive in comparison to other internet deals on the market, you’ll be paying above the average cost once the first month discount ends.

Telstra is one of the few providers to offer a maximum typical evening speed on most of its plans. As mentioned above, the telco maxes-out its download speed in the NBN 25, NBN 50, NBN 100 and NBN 250 tiers (it does this by 'overprovisioning' – or in layman’s terms, providing more bandwidth than its customers generally require). With its NBN 1000 plan reporting download speeds of 700Mbps in the evening hours, it’s the telco closest to reaching the 1000Mbps mark.

These reported figures are also well-supported by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) broadband reporting , with its December 2022 report finding the telco came exceptionally close to delivering its promised download speed 100% of the time.

The ACCC found that the Telstra customers participating in the study were able to reach 99.8% of their plan’s rated speeds on average during the busy evening hours of 7pm to 11pm. Across all hours, the Telstra households exceeded the advertised speeds by 1.2% – both are excellent results for an NBN provider which is promising maxed-out download speeds.

The report also found that Telstra was marginally beat-out by Launtel , Exetel and Optus in average download speed during the busy hours. Exetel and Optus both offer top speeds on their NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans, and manage to do so for a decent amount less than Telstra. With this in mind, it’s worth considering whether Telstra’s price is justified for you.

The ACCC also looks at NBN outages , and its December 2022 report found that its pool of volunteers with a Telstra connection had a fairly low rate of outages, with one occurring about every 4.2 days on average. By comparison, the average for all telcos monitored was around every 3.4 days during the testing period.

While Telstra’s customers experienced an outage less frequently, the ACCC’s results show that when they occurred, they had a high instance of lasting 10 minutes or more (these longer outages accounted for about 40% of Telstra’s total).

Figures around outages can fluctuate over time, but we’d also note that this figure is consistent with the ACCC’s previous August 2022 finding. For more context, most other providers' proportion of 10 minute-plus outages is much lower – around 10-20% of total.

Netflix’s own ISP Speed Index measures the performance of the streaming service across various internet providers, and current figures show that most ISPs handle the service the same. Telstra’s currently on par with Optus , TPG and others, and its performance has remained steady since at least August 2022, as has Optus’.

Telstra has plenty of support options for its customers. Its website has extensive support pages for troubleshooting issues on your own, but you can also speak to someone over the phone, through online chat , or by visiting a Telstra store. If you prefer getting assistance face-to-face, there’s few other telcos that can offer this kind of help.  

You can call Telstra on 13 22 00 for any inquiry, and lines for setup and technical support are open Monday to Friday from 7am to 11pm AEST. Alternatively, you can speak to a support agent using Telstra’s online chat (though you’ll first be connected to a bot to try and answer your query, if it’s unsuccessful, you’ll be put through to a real human).

If you’re already a Telstra customer, your text-based queries will be best served by the My Telstra app, which is available for iOS and Android . This will connect you to a Telstra support agent right away, and you don’t have to stay in the app while you wait for a reply – their response will just come through like any other notification.  

Telstra also offers specific support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander customers with a dedicated phone line. It can be reached on 1800 444 403 from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Multilingual services are available too – you can call 1800 241 600 for a free translation and interpretation service, which is only available to non-English speaking customers. Telstra also lists stores in your state with multilingual services if you’d prefer to speak in person.

When it comes to customer satisfaction, Telstra has not attracted positive ratings from either Product Review or Trustpilot , with both sites showing below two stars for the telco. It’s not uncommon for large NBN providers such as Telstra to receive mostly negative feedback from review aggregating sites, so take this feedback with a grain of salt.

Optional extras and bundle deals

Aside from its high-performing service, Telstra’s choice of perks and optional added extras is a compelling reason for choosing the telco over others. All Telstra customers now receive the Telstra Smart Modem 3 when signing up, which is Wi-Fi 6 enabled, and comes with 4G backup if you lose your NBN connection. If you leave Telstra within 24 months, we like that you can return the modem or pay a AU$200 no-return fee – no other exit fees apply.

Telstra can also guarantee you wall-to-wall Wi-Fi coverage at home, though this comes at an additional cost. For AU$12 a month over 24 months, or AU$288 upfront, you can get the Telstra Smart Wi-Fi Booster added to your plan to fill those Wi-Fi black spots. The Wi-Fi extender will benefit those who live in larger, double brick or multi-story homes, as they’re the homes most likely to experience spotty Wi-Fi.

Internet Optimiser is another neat feature that’s now included with all Telstra NBN plans at no extra cost. You can set it up through the My Telstra app, and from there, you can prioritise online traffic on your home network. This feature is good for gamers who want to reduce lag spikes, or anyone who wants to control which devices get the most bandwidth.

If you’d like a home phone line included in your plan, Telstra will sort you out with a landline at no extra cost, with unlimited calls to standard mobiles and landlines in Australia all included. This is a pretty great deal in comparison to what’s on offer from the select number of providers who still offer customers a landline – TPG, for example, will charge you at least AU$10 a month if you want to use your landline. At present, there’s no option to bundle together your Telstra NBN plan with a Telstra mobile plan .

Telstra customers have access to some pretty great entertainment add-ons too. You’ll get a few free streaming subscriptions when you first sign up with Telstra, including a two months of Binge , three months of Apple TV Plus and four months of Spotify Premium – all for nothing.

You can also add a Telstra TV box to your chosen NBN plan for an extra AU$9 a month, or AU$216 outright. Telstra TV lets you pause and rewind live TV, and includes apps for Netflix, Stan, Kayo, Binge and Disney Plus, but note you’ll still need a subscription to watch these services. We can’t see much benefit in bolting on the Telstra TV service if you already own a smart TV, though.

There’s stacks more entertainment options available through Telstra’s partnership with Foxtel , from packs that include over 50 channels to more niche options, such as Foxtel Sports HD or Foxtel Movies HD packs. You can often snag a discount for your first 12 months on these services through Telstra as well.

Finally, Telstra has not forgotten about the gamers. You’re able to bundle in 24 months of Xbox All Access with your NBN plan , at an extra cost of AU$33 a month for an Xbox Series S console, or AU$46 a month for an Xbox Series X console.

Additional fees

• No cancellation fee if you leave Telstra
• Return modem or pay AU$200 no-return fee if leaving before 24 months

As mentioned, all Telstra NBN plans come with a modem included, and you won’t have to pay for it if you stay with the telco for more than 24 months. If you leave within two years, you have the option of returning the modem or paying a AU$200 no-return fee.

All of the extras that are highlighted above come at an additional cost, and you’ll be able to tack them onto your plan of choice during sign up. These add-ons can be cancelled at any time, but keep in mind that some entertainment extras such as Xbox All Access (which comes with a console) will need to be paid off in full if you cancel within 24 months.

Since all of Telstra’s plans come in a no lock-in contract, no other exit fees apply and you can cancel the service at any time.

Can i get telstra nbn.

Telstra offers plans in almost every speed tier, with NBN 25 and above available. If you want to sign up for an NBN 250 or NBN 1000 plan, you’ll need to have a fibre-to-the-premise (FTTP) or hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) connection – this is the case across all providers. If you’re unsure of what NBN connection you have, you can check your address on Telstra’s website.

How can I check if Telstra NBN is down?

If you’re experiencing a Telstra NBN outage, you’ll first want to figure out if it’s just you, or if the internet is down for everyone in your area. We’d recommend visiting Telstra’s outage page first, and if no issues have been reported, you can check NBN Co’s website for wider network issues .

If your internet is down, you’ll need to check these pages using your phone, or another device with its own internet connection. If Telstra’s own website is down, we’d recommend checking the independent site Down Detector . People are flocking to Aussie Broadband's cheaper new Buddy Telco, but are its NBN plans good value?

The best Australian internet service providers offer their customers two things: stellar service and seriously damn good value. While most ISPs we recommend at Tom's Guide do at least one of the two, it’s rare for a provider to get top marks for both. A new affordable NBN provider just landed on the scene and is trying exactly that — and it hails from a brand that's a heavyweight in Australia's internet landscape.

A subsidiary of Aussie Broadband (ABB), Buddy Telco has been launched as a budget-focused brand that delivers a no-frills approach to NBN plans. Buddy only made its official debut into the internet landscape last month, but it’s already shaking things up by offering the cheapest NBN 1000 plan on the market .

Much like similar offshoot providers — Telstra-owned Belong is another example — Buddy uses its parent company’s core infrastructure, meaning you get Aussie Broadband’s renowned network coverage, speeds and optimisations, but in a much more affordable package. In simple terms, Buddy costs less than ABB but delivers the same benefits, making it all the more appealing for those with tighter purse strings.

But Buddy does come with a minor catch — the telco exclusively provides NBN services, meaning it doesn't sell or supply hardware, such as Wi-Fi modems. There’s also no telephone customer support, so consumers need to log requests through an AI-powered live chat. Both of these factors are ways in which the telco passes on savings to consumers, but if you do need human assistance, you can request it through the telco's app or a browser.

Over the past month, we've seen an uptick in our readers signing up for the telco — and we assume this is due to the pricing being rather attractive at face value. That said, when we dissect the telco beyond the surface, the results are rather surprising.

We've assessed Buddy's four home internet plans — NBN 25, NBN 50, NBN 100 and NBN 1000 — and compared them to other providers' options across the tiers. From advertised speed claims to first-year pricing and more, here's a look into how Buddy Telco stacks up against its competitors.

How do Buddy's plans compare?

Speedwise, Buddy's Standard NBN 25 plan comes in just under the maximum of 25Mbps, advertising 1Mbps less. Most Aussie providers reach the full speed for this tier, but this minor speed discrepancy is unlikely to cause any real-world difference.

Buddy's NBN 25 plan is also one of the cheapest available for AU$65p/m ongoing, despite not having an introductory discount. There are only four providers that offer cheaper prices for an NBN 25 plan — Tangerine , Kogan , Flip and Exetel — with the cheapest provider being Flip, which has an ongoing price of AU$57.90p/m.

Buddy's NBN 25 plan advertises 24Mbps during the typical evening hours, which is on par with its parent company, Aussie Broadband. You'll save around AU$5p/m compared to the average price of this tier, which is currently AU$70.21p/m.

Speed: Buddy's plan guarantees at least 24Mbps during the busy evening hours, which is the standard for this tier.

Pricing: With an annual cost of AU$780, this plan will save you up to AU$60 when compared to the average yearly price, even though it doesn't have an initial outlay.

Is it good value? The plan does provide adequate value, but you can find more inexpensive plans that offer full download speeds. Our current NBN 25 recommendation is Flip's AU$39p/m plan (for 6 months, then AU$57.90p/m).

Total minimum cost: AU$65 | Yearly cost: AU$780

Arguably the most popular NBN tier available, most Aussie providers claim NBN 50 speeds range from 40 to 50Mbps. In this scenario, Buddy's advertised 49Mbps is good but not quite class-leading compared to most on this tier. With average speeds being 49.57Mbps, Buddy's plan does come with a teeny discrepancy, but that is unlikely to make much of a real-world speed difference. It also doesn't offer the full uploads expected with this tier, cutting speeds short of 4Mbps.

In terms of price, this plan is under the average of AU$82.50p/m, but it doesn't offer an introductory discount. Moreover, this plan costs AU$900 per year, which is reasonable, however, several providers come well under this yearly price tag and come paired with maximum advertised speeds.

Buddy Telco | NBN 50 | No lock-in contract | Unlimited data | AU$75p/m

Advertising 49Mbps downloads and 16Mbps uploads, this NBN 50 plan will cost you AU$75p/m and AU$900 per year.

Speed: Buddy's plan does come with a small speed discrepancy, but it is so minimal it will unlikely make much of a difference to the service.

Pricing: The pricepoint for the plan is under the average for the tier, saving you an estimated AU$90 per year.

Is it good value? Yes, but it does come with some minor caveats. It doesn't reach maximum speeds for the tier and is priced in the middle of the NBN 50 tier. If you want to maximise savings, you're better off signing up for a cheaper plan with similar speeds. Our top NBN 50 pick is Spintel's AU$66p/m plan (for 6 months, then AU$76.95p/m ongoing).

Total minimum cost: AU$75 | Yearly cost: AU$900

Much like its parent company, Buddy advertises only 98Mbps during the busy evening hours, which is a mere 2Mbps off the magic triple-digit maximum. That said, the average speed for this tier is 98.25Mbps according to our research across ISPs that we monitor, so in this case, Buddy isn't too far off the mark.

Now, when it comes to monthly spend, Buddy's current introductory rate is rather attractive for an NBN 100 plan. On average, NBN 100 plans will set you back AU$91.34p/m, however, Buddy's outlay is an impressive AU$75p/m, before increasing to AU$85p/m after six months (which is still a stellar discount).

Buddy Telco | NBN 100 | No lock-in contract | Unlimited data | AU$75p/m (for 6 months, then AU$85p/m)

Buddy's Speedy NBN 100 plan will save you AU$10p/m for the first six months — that's AU$60 total — before the price increases to AU$85p/m. The plan promises to reach 98Mbps download speeds and 16Mbps uploads during the busy evening hours.

Speed: Coming in just under 100Mbps, Buddy's 98Mbps plan is on par with the average speed claims for the tier.

Pricing: The plan does offer incredible value for money, shaving off a massive AU$16.34p/m compared to the average of this tier.

Is it good value? Yes — but again, this plan does come with a speed caveat, however, it will not likely make much of a noticeable real-world difference. With that in mind, you'll save AU$60 in your first year and have a relatively low ongoing cost for an NBN 100 plan, so it's a clear winner for us.

Total minimum cost: AU$75 | Total cost for first 12 months: AU$960 | Yearly cost after discount: AU$1,020

When it comes to speed, Buddy's NBN 1000 plan promises 600Mbps, which is low compared to the theoretical maximums on this tier. However, only one provider — Swoop — reaches 969Mbps, whereas most others reach between 650Mbps and 850Mbps.

In terms of price point, however, this plan really shines, as it is the cheapest NBN 1000 plan currently available. Over the first year, you'll save a mammoth AU$390 compared to ABB's offering. When compared to another budget provider, SpinTel, you'll save AU$6p/m for similar speed claims.

Buddy Telco | NBN 1000 | No lock-in contract | Unlimited data | AU$89p/m (for 3 months, then AU$99p/m)

Buddy Telco’s Zoomy NBN 1000 plan advertises 600Mbps downloads and 41Mbps uploads during the busy evening hours of 7pm to 11pm. Do note though, that this plan is available for HFC and FTTP addresses only.

Speed: Buddy's NBN 1000 plan promises 600Mbps, which is a little lower than the average of 691Mbps for the tier.

Pricing: With a total first-year cost of AU$1,158 (AU$89p/m for the first three months, then AU$99 ongoing), this is now the cheapest NBN 1000 plan in Australia.

Is it good value? Absolutely. You'll save AU$22.51p/m compared to the tier's average cost of AU$121.51p/m, achieve adequate download speeds during the busy evening hours, and pay less than AU$1,200 for the first year.

Buddy Telco is the new kid on the NBN block under parent company Aussie Broadband. Here’s what you need to know about its plans, pricing and broadband features.

Buddy Telco is (effectively) the “budget” brand of Aussie Broadband in much the same way as Belong is the low-cost brand owned by Telstra .

So why have a budget brand? So that Aussie Broadband can compete with the likes of Telstra/Belong, but also with other more value-centric NBN brands while still offering a “premium” NBN product under its own branding. 

Buddy Telco only offers broadband plans via the National Broadband Network over fixed line ( FTTP , FTTN , HFC ,  FTTC , FTTB connections where there’s an already established connection – or in other words, where you’re transferring from an existing NBN ISP connection. 

That does mean that at the current time it’s got no offerings for Fixed Wireless NBN or NBN Sky Muster Satellite customers, and as is always the case, the NBN technology available at your place depends entirely on your address and the rollout style in your area.

The whole idea behind Buddy Telco is that it’s a simple, no-frills NBN provider. That extends to the way it sorts its plans, with just the four plan tiers on offer at launch, all tied very explicitly to existing NBN speed tiers .

Its entry level plan starts at NBN 25/10 for $65 per month with advertised typical evening speeds of 24/8Mbps, stepping up to $75/month for NBN 50/20 with typical advertised speeds of 49Mbps down and 16Mbps up. The third tier covers NBN 100/20 at a standard price of $85/month (though as a launch special you can get that for $75/month, the same as the NBN 50/20 tier for six months) with typical speeds of 98Mbps down and 16Mbps up. Finally for those with the need for speed (and either an FTTP or HFC NBN connection) there’s an NBN 1000/50 tier priced typically at $99 per month, though again there’s an introductory special that drops the price to $89/month for the first three months.

Buddy Telco internet plan features

Buddy Telco’s positioning is built around simplicity and stripping away the more advanced features that you can get from its parent Aussie Broadband. So if you’ve got a burning need for a Static IP address , for example, then that’s something that Buddy Telco doesn’t offer to its customers.

Likewise, because it’s built on simplicity, it’s also not getting into the bundled modem or modem-router business either; you’ll need to supply your own if you sign up for a Buddy Telco NBN plan.

Where Buddy Telco really differs up from its parent company is in the way that it handles support. Like Aussie Broadband, it’s all built around Australian-based support, but it rather explicitly doesn’t do so via the phone. Instead, support queries are handled via a web form or smartphone app. 

At launch the Buddy Telco iOS App is available, but the Android app is not – it’s promised to be “coming soon”. If you don’t like dealing with phone support people then this could be an upside, though conversely if you hate dealing with machines it could be a real issue when and if problems with your NBN connection arise.

Can I use my own modem or modem-router with Buddy Telco?

You actually have to! Buddy Telco does not supply modems or modem-routers to its customers.

Can I sign up with Buddy Telco if I’m new to the NBN?

No. Buddy Telco will only accept NBN customers on established and connected NBN premises – which is to say, homes or buildings that have already had a live NBN connection where you’re (most likely) transitioning from a different ISP.

The next step is to go ahead and place your order. You can do this directly on the Telstra website by adding the plan to your cart. You'll need to sign in or register with us to complete this step. Some people think you need to cancel your current plans first before signing up for a new one but that’s not true. This will just leave you without internet for longer than necessary. Keep your current setup until you have locked down your new plan, provider and equipment and you are ready to make the switch.
