Studying in Wisconsin offers students a chance to experience the beauty of the Midwest while enjoying an excellent education. The U.S. News ranks Wisconsin at #6 in education overall and #9 in higher education specifically.

Scholarships and grants can be a great way to pay for tuition, cut down on student loans, and avoid long-term liability.

Student writes his responses to the University of Wisconsin Madison supplemental essays

The University of Wisconsin-Madison, also known as UW Madison, is a public land-grant research university located in Madison, Wisconsin. It has a 88% graduation rate, so you know that students are thriving there. Writing stellar UW Madison supplemental essays is the first step toward admission, so let’s get started!

The University of Wisconsin-Madison supplemental essay prompts

UW Madison requires two supplemental essay prompts for applicants, and both need to be answered if you apply through the UW System Application. If you’re applying through the Common Application, you will only need to respond to Prompt #1 (you will also have to choose one of the general Common App essays as well). Learn more about the UW Madison supplemental essay prompts below!

Tell us why you decided to apply to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition, please include why you are interested in studying the major(s) you have selected. If you selected undecided please describe your areas of possible academic interest. (You may enter up to 650 words, but 300-500 is recommended).

This is a common question for college applications: why do you want to go here ? UW Madison is asking you to display your interest in not only their campus in your essay, but also in their course offerings and the experiences you could have there.

Use your essay to highlight the values at UW Madison that you support, or an activity they offer that you want to get involved in. It’s all about what makes this university stand out to you. Do your UW Madison research and take notes for when you start writing.

UW Madison also offers a wide variety of majors in different industries. When discussing your academic interest, explain how a specific program or major might help you to achieve your goals.

Some of the categories you could choose from for your major include:

Business & Entrepreneurship Engineering & Related Sciences Media & Communications
Creative Arts Health & Wellness  Plants & Animals

If you’re still trying to figure out your major, don’t stress! Your supplemental essay can still help you stand out to the admissions office. Try to focus on how you hope to grow at UW Madison. Are you undecided because you want to experience different types of classes? Or maybe you want to take some courses on a subject before declaring your major.

No matter what your story is, make UW Madison a part of it. Colleges want to know that they’re instrumental in your academic journey.

Questions to consider:

  • What’s unique about UW Madison that makes me want to apply?
  • What do I want to do after college?
  • How would UW Madison help me toward my goals?
This part is all about you. Tell us about something you’ve done–academically or personally–and what you’ve learned from it. Was it a success or a challenge? Did it represent a turning point in your life? How did this particular moment in your life influence you, and how will it continue to influence you as you pursue your college education? (You may enter up to 650 words, but 300-500 is recommended).

UW Madison uses this prompt to get to know you, the potential next generation of their university. They also indirectly emphasize the Wisconsin Idea , and you should try to mention it in your supplemental essay.

The Wisconsin Idea is a tradition that follows the principle that education should continue to impact people long after they step outside of the classroom. UW Madison wants to know how a specific event has formed you because now you carry that knowledge with you to the doorsteps of their university.

Your essay should highlight the impact of the event you choose to write about and how it relates to the ideals that UW Madison upholds. The Wisconsin Idea can be reflected in different ways, and suggesting new ones in your essay could make your application really stand out.

  • What life lesson did I learn from this activity or event?
  • How can I incorporate the Wisconsin Idea in my own essay?
  • What do I hope to gain while at UW Madison?

Final thoughts for applicants

Now that you’re finishing up your UW Madison supplemental essay, there are still a couple of things to keep in mind. For example, there is some leeway with the word count, but it’s ideal to stay within the recommended word limit unless other details are vital to your essay. When you’re done writing, try to read your essays out loud or peer review with some friends. You might’ve missed some errors along the way and going through one more time will help you fix them.

Read up on what UW Madison is looking for in their applicants on their website . This can give you insight on what to include in your essay and help make sure UW Madison is a perfect fit for you.

The Mensa Foundation Scholarship Program awards more than $200,000 in assistance every year to college-bound students around the globe. Scholarships are awarded based solely on 550-word essays expressing applicants’ academic and professional goals and how their personal experiences will help them to accomplish those goals.

The U.S. scholarship program relies on approximately 450 dedicated volunteers around the country, with support from the Foundation’s office staff. U.S. applicants need not be Mensa members. However, college-bound Mensa members and their dependents may also be eligible for one of several $2,500 scholarships awarded each year through the Mensa Member Scholarship Program. Scholarship winners are notified in mid-June by mail and email.

The International Scholarship Program is open to international Mensans (other than American Mensa). One scholarship, which also includes dependents of international Mensa members, is for those attending college in the United States. The other scholarships are for international Mensans attending college other than in the U.S.

12 Students Awarded Dematic FIRST® Scholarships to Pursue STEM Education

ATLANTA – August 07, 2024 —  Dematic is proud to announce the winners of the 2024 Dematic FIRST ® Scholarship program , which recognizes students dedicated to pursuing careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). In partnership with the corporate nonprofit FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), this scholarship program underscores Dematic’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders and innovators in the supply chain and logistics industry.

This year’s scholarship recipients include students Aman Amjad from Brookfield, Wisconsin, and Lily Hoopes from Bonney Lake, Washington, who were both awarded $5,000 to support their post-secondary education or technical certification. Dematic also awarded $1,000 scholarships to 10 additional students: Blake Bollow, Noelle Bryan, Casey Bushey, Allie Cadenhead, Rafael Calderon, Adriana Cruz, Jason Elisei, Bill Giang, Hendrik Sorensen, and Adam Thai.

“This year's Dematic FIRST scholarship winners are truly exceptional,” says Mike Larsson, President of Dematic and Executive Board Member of KION Group. “The skills and experiences they’ve gained through the FIRST program will propel them not only to successful careers in STEM but also to becoming future leaders. The high caliber of this year’s applicants highlights our need for continued investment in STEM education. By empowering these future leaders, we're paving the way for the next generation.”

Now in its fourth year, the Dematic FIRST scholarship program attracted applications from students across 28 states, Washington, D.C., and Canada. Dematic executives reviewed all applications, selecting honorees based on their academic excellence and commitment to pursuing a future in STEM. The program requires applicants to provide their transcripts, a one-page essay discussing a future where humans and machines interact in the warehouse, and a letter of recommendation. In addition, they must have previously competed in a FIRST Robotics Competition or FIRST Tech Challenge.

“Being awarded the Dematic FIRST Scholarship is an incredible honor as I advance my education at Georgia Tech and embark on my career,” says Amjad. “Participating in FIRST during high school ignited my passion for STEM, and I’m grateful to Dematic for supporting my studies. FIRST and Dematic encourage students to explore real-world careers through teamwork, education, and robotics. Thank you for opening doors to opportunities, including early workforce exposure and access to advanced technology.”

Dematic is dedicated to supporting FIRST and its mission to engage youth to become skilled professionals, creative thinkers, and well-rounded citizens. Dematic employees actively contribute to FIRST teams by providing mentorship and guidance to students helping to foster their development. Last year, Dematic sponsored 18 FIRST teams and donated $68,000 to support students as they prepared for competitions and careers in STEM. Since 2008, Dematic has sponsored teams participating in FIRST robotics competitions and invested more than $310,000 in local teams, events, and student scholarships, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to nurturing the next generation of STEM professionals.

A helicopter tour of Table Rock Lake impoundment and more in the latest Manitowoc outdoors report

Bob schuh has the latest outdoors news from across manitowoc county and beyond..

Mary and I just returned from a trip to Branson, Missouri, and as always, I seek out things in nature that trigger my interests.

On one of the days, we took a helicopter ride to tour the Table Rock Lake impoundment .

The visible part of the dam that creates this impoundment lake is 1,602 feet wide, 252 feet tall and the top thickness of the concrete for the dam is 35 feet wide.

The total width of the structure is 4,821 feet wide, which includes the earthen buffers that help hold the dam in place, which is only a few hundred feet short of a mile.

The dam has 10 spillways and turns six electric turbines. The electricity from two of the turbines goes just for operating the dam itself. The other four turbines generate power that goes directly into the grid.

Table Rock Lake is fed by the White River, James River and Kings River systems. This impoundment has 43,100 acres of surface water — 67.34 square miles of lake surface. The facility generates more than 50,000 kilowatts of electricity for the grid.

Not only is this a power-generating machine, but it also serves as a freshwater source for drinking water for many communities.

Of course, big waters like this become a sportsman’s paradise. Some of the fish species in the lake include walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, white bass, crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, flathead catfish and more.

The helicopter pilot was very good. He recognized my blindness immediately and explained to me how the areas were lined up with chalets people can rent out. He also pointed out they had a beautiful sand beach. However, that country is all rock, so sand had to be trucked in to make the beach. Dozens of boat launch ramps were also created to help the fishermen get their boats in and out of the lake.
