Knowledge and understanding:.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of and the ability to use advanced computing methods and techniques.
- Explore complex computing problems and apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions
- Fashion out advanced computing-based solutions to meet a given set of computing requirements in the computer science.
- Demonstrate understanding of professional responsibilities and make informed assessments grounded on accepted legal and ethical standards.
- Acquire advanced knowledge of computer theories and computer systems
- Carry out scholarly research to apply concepts of Computing to contemporary issues and publish in peer-reviewed journals, conferences and books in the computing discipline (s)
- Analyse, select and develop complex solutions to meet standard computing requirements
- Apply advanced methodologies and techniques in solving problems in computer systems.
- Engage in critical peer review process of papers, software and proposals, and give positive advice for improvement and innovation.

program synopsis
Ultimately this programme aims to:
1. Enhance research management skills in specific areas of Information Technology.
2. Improve the analytical and conceptual skills in specific areas of Information Technology.
3. Foster research and development of new knowledge in specific areas of Information Technology.
The Doctor of Philosophy degree programme in Open University Malaysia (OUM) has been designed to produce cutting edge knowledge workers in information and communication technology and cater to the needs of industries, academic and research institutions.
In particular, the objective of this programme is to produce high calibre researchers in critical areas in information and communication technology.
This program comprised three parts:
Part I – Compulsory Core Courses Part II – Research Part III – Thesis Examination
Part II – Research
Students will be conducting the research and prepare the thesis under the guidance of supervisor(s). The areas of research in this field of study are as follows:
(i) Methodology of Information System Development (ii) E- Learning -Learning Object Modelling -Object Reusability -Automatic Instructional Design -Use modelling – E-Learning Effectiveness -Student Assessment in E-Learning Environment (iii) Intelligent Systems and Novel Computing (iv) Knowledge Management (v) Database – Uncertainty Database – Spatial Database (vi) Computer/Information System Security (vii) Media planning and Economic
Part III – Thesis Examination
In Part III, the candidate has completed the thesis and is ready to submit it for examination. An internal examiner and one external examiner will be appointed to assess the Ph.D. (Information Technology) thesis in the Viva Voce session.

Master’s degree in Computing / related field; OR Bachelor’s degree with first class in Computing / related field from OUM or other institutions recognized by Senate; AND i) Registered for a Master’s degree in Computing / related field; AND ii)Passed related qualifying examination.

PhD Entry Requirements for Admission
Applicants for the PhD in Computer Science are expected to have met the following prerequisites:
- MPhil (in CS or closely related field, with or without work experience, [Duration: 3-4 years])
- MSc (in CS or closely related field (Comp Eng. & EE with or without work experience, [Duration: 4-5 years])
- Candidates must demonstrate that they have a solid background to conduct independent academic research in Computer Science.
Mode of Application
A complete application packet must include:
- A completed Valley View University graduate application form;
- Official transcripts of the applicant’s previous academic record at the university level
- A full curriculum vitae
- Three letters of recommendation commenting on the applicant’s ability to do the programme
- Research Proposal [MANDATORY] – Candidate shall make a presentation to the selection panel during the interview process

SPECIALIZATION TRACKS
The PhD CS curriculum offers three areas of specialization tracks for students to choose from. Each track has four courses (12 credit hours) to offer in-depth understanding of an integrated body of knowledge area in which the student seeks to develop a thesis.
The three areas of specialization tracks are:
- Network and Security Systems [COSC 720, COSC 721, COSC 722, COSC 723]
- Software Engineering and Embedded Systems [COSC 730, COSC 731, COSC 732, COSC 733]
- Artificial Intelligence and Robotics [ COSC 740, COSC 741, COSC 742, COSC 743]
MPhil/MSc Entry Requirements for Admission
Applicants for the Masters in Computer Science are expected to have met the following prerequisites:
- The minimum requirement for admission shall be the possession of a relevant Baccalaureate Degree (BSc. CS, BSc CE, BSc. IT) (First class and Second Class only)
Programme Duration: 2-3 years (on the average) for full time students and 4-5 years for part-time students.
- Admission to university master’s program is made by competition. Candidates must be successful at an interview to be scheduled by the department. [Pre-selection: An examination-interview, will be conducted for each candidate to further ascertain their eligibility into the programmes. The Chair should give his/her agreement for each of the candidates prior to the examination. The competition is in the form of an examination-interview in front of a committee formed by at least two professors and the representative of the university usually from the Graduate School. Every student is admitted or rejected to the program after the examination in front of the committee and as would be determined by the interviewing committee.
- Master of Philosophy candidates must demonstrate that they have the relevant background and competencies to conduct independent academic research in Computer Science.
